TAHRIR SQUARE, CAIRO -- This was the place where the revolution began: the roundish square where Egyptians celebrated Mubarak's fall.
This is where they are shouting on bullhorns again, outraged because they say the Muslim Brotherhood has stolen the revolution and is railroading though a constitution that could lock in Muslim Brotherhood rule for 50 years, bringing more Islamic law. They cry -- not against Islam -- but that an extremist interpretation is being forced down their throats by a president who critics say is acting every part the tyrant.
This is also a warning, they claim, of what may happen across the Middle East. The era of the Muslim Brotherhood appears to have arrived. President Obama has hailed the Brotherhood's President Mohammed Morsi as a pragmatist who helped end the Gaza crisis. Egyptians here think the Brotherhood has conned Washington, just like it conned them.
Christians, liberals left out as Islamists back Egypt's draft constitution
"President Obama is supporting a terrorist," a man told me amid chants of "Leave! Leave!" in Tahrir Square and "Down, down with the rule of the Muslim Brotherhood's spiritual leader." Before, it was "Down, down with Mubarak."
Morsi's decree divides Egypt
Egypt was torn in half just over a week ago when Morsi made himself more powerful than Mubarak ever was, and the kings before him. Morsi declared himself above judicial oversight, his decisions final and unassailable. He made himself, according to critics, a new pharaoh on the Nile. Imagine if, after five months in office, an American president announced that he could pass any law he pleased regardless of Congress or the U.S. Supreme Court. Imagine if he said his decisions were final and inspired by God.
After issuing a decree making himself more powerful than the courts, Egyptian president Mohamed Morsi has sparked a wave of anger – some of which is directed toward the United States. NBC's Richard Engel reports.
Morsi last night apologized for the power grab and said he didn't want the extra authorities, but that they were necessary for the good of the people and to safeguard the revolution. Dictators always say stuff like that. Burn down the village to save it.
At first Egyptians were shocked that Morsi would make such an obvious and, according to Egyptian judges, blatantly illegal move. It's clear now, as some analysts have long feared, that the brotherhood is making sure it doesn't lose power again by taking control of Egypt's constitution. The Brotherhood wants to write the rules of the game. Now they've done that too.

Protected by the president's new-found supreme and unquestionable powers, Morsi ordered his Islamist allies to finish writing the constitution and get it on his desk by the end of this week. They did it, even though many independent legal experts, Christians and opposition politicians boycotted the drafting process. The Brotherhood called the new constitution "a jewel." Many Egyptians say it leaves too much room for the implementation of Shariah law.
The constitution also empowers the people and government with a duty to uphold moral values, a vague clause that could pave the way for vigilante morality police. The constitution barely mentions protecting women's rights. According to women who were originally involved in the drafting process, and who subsequently left because they felt they were being ignored, clauses specifically demanding that women be protected from violence and sex trafficking were dropped because Islamists feared it would conflict with their desire to allow child brides.
ANALYSIS: Crisis tests Egyptians' constitution
The constitution has long been the Muslim Brotherhood's lodestar and, in the past, they have been willing the kill for it. In 1954, not long after a group of 'free officers' carried out a coup against the British-backed monarchy, a Brotherhood assassin tried to kill President Gamal Abdel Nasser. Nasser, a leading free officer, favored a mostly secular, pro-military constitution. The Brotherhood, an Islamist group that supports the return of Arab and Islamic unity and the revival of ancient Muslim glory and Shariah laws, couldn't accept the new rules.
The Brotherhood's assassination attempt failed. The gunman's eight bullets, fired while Nasser was giving a speech in Alexandria, all missed. The Brotherhood was banned. The group went underground, at times tolerated but more often repressed by Nasser's successors: presidents Mubarak and Anwar el-Sadat. When the revolts started against Mubarak, the Brotherhood saw that fate had given them another chance.
Muslim Brotherhood's calculated rise to power
Looking back now, it all seems so obvious, yet many Egyptians refused to see it coming. In fact, many of the secular revolutionaries backed the Brotherhood, arguing they were better allies than the hated military. The Brotherhood played its cards well.
The Brotherhood was late to join the anti-Mubarak revolts in 2011. When students and liberals initially occupied Tahrir Square, it looked like it might be a passing thing. The Brotherhood either didn't appreciate its significance, or wanted to wait to see who was winning.
I remember watching the Brothers march into the square. They arrived in a large group of perhaps five hundred. Nearly all were men. Many had beards. Most were dressed in poorly cut dark suits. They occupied a corner of Tahrir near a Kentucky Fried Chicken. They came with microphones and wood to build a platform. The other protesters in the square seemed happy to have the support of the new arrivals.

The protests continued to grow. Labor unions went on strike. The military enacted a coup against Mubarak. President Obama withdrew his support for Washington's long-time Arab friend. And Mubarak the president was no more.
The Brotherhood first said it wouldn't seek the new presidency at all. It promised to exist solely as an influential member of civil society. Back then, many Egyptians feared the Brotherhood. It was a semi-secret group. It had a small office in a Cairo apartment building with a sign on the door the size of an index card. Mubarak-era officials had often described the Brotherhood as a group of terrorists. One security official I know called the Brotherhood the most dangerous group in the world. But in the heady 1960s-like days after Mubarak's resignation, the Brotherhood's bad reputation only seemed to give the group more credibility. They'd been oppressed by the man. It was a new day. Everyone, it appeared, deserved a new beginning.
The Brotherhood went to work. It organized its considerable finances. It built a big new headquarters with far bigger signs on the doors. It sent its representatives around the world, especially to Washington, on a charm offensive. We've been oppressed, they claimed. We were slandered by a tyrant. We're not what you've heard. We can unite the Sunni world against Iran. We can help bring Israeli-Palestinian peace. There were many promises of a great future.
Even then, the Brotherhood's focus on the constitution was clear. The Brotherhood insisted the constitution be drafted only after a new president was elected. The military was overseeing a transition back then. The Brotherhood argued that the military couldn't be trusted to oversee the creation of such an important document. Many Egyptians agreed -- a decision some sorely regret today.

Morsi won the election by a narrow margin and then five months into his term, made himself a dictator and ordered his Islamist friends to quickly finish the constitution. Morsi has said he'll drop his extraordinary powers as soon as the constitution is approved in a referendum in December. Islamists are convinced they'll be able to use their grassroots network of activists to win the referendum like they won the elections. Western diplomats tend to agree.
Yet the United States has remained mostly silent on all this, urging both sides to stay calm and work it out. Washington's policy seems to be that what's going on is simply democracy in progress as Egyptians learn to use their new rights.
But in Tahrir Square people seem convinced the Brotherhood isn't testing its fledgling wings. They say Morsi knows exactly what he's doing, Washington be warned.

The more I read about the Muslim brotherhood and its MO, the more they remind me of the Tea Party and the Republican politicians in bed with them. Just like Morsi is changing the constitution, Republican Governors, far to the right or Ronald Reagan, are drafting legislation to suppress the vote, to redistrict their states to ensure a veto proof majority, blatant intrusion on women's right to contraceptives and abortion, relegating science to the back seat while pushing creationism, banning books at libraries and editing/censoring books not in accord with their views. They even go to elementary and high school book publishers demanding revisions to the books they have produced for decades. They want to rewrite history if you listen to the nuts Palin and Bachmann. They have their own morality brigades in the American Family Council and other evangelical extremist organization. They use hollow excuses like the "War on Christmas" spewed on a daily basis by Fox News propagandists just like the Mullahs. They want to amend the constitution rejecting some amendments and forcing others on us. They march to the drumbeat of war and belligerence just like the Iranian leadership, conjuring lies and fear campaigns to mobilize the masses in their favor. The GOP is watching Chavez smooth and gradual take over Venezuela's power through manipulation of the system and radical changes in the laws, and is learning from it. In several States they try to remove Supreme Court Justices blocking their destructive agendas. Just like Islamists they attack minority groups blaming them for every malady affecting the nation: the gays, the welfare queens, the undocumented workers, the liberal media, Hollywood, union workers, scientists warning us about global warming, even picking on some veterans for demanding too much after they gave it all for us. The Hannitys, O'Reillys, Cheneys, Becks, Limbaughs...all cowards who would run to the nearest cave if they heard a car backfiring....I could go on forever but you get the picture. We must stay vigilant and avoid another 2010 elections who swept these radicals into many positions of influence.

I can promise you I look at all news outlets and since I do not trust any of them or any political party at this time, I do look deeper into the issues. And what I have found would scare any American that believed in the founding principles of this great nation. there is a machine taking us down and supporting the brotherhood and tyrants world wide but it is none of the folks you listed in your above post. Tarsan, that isn't quite they way it went down. The real facts are better than a made up story. Egyptian voting ended up like ours...Obama (closet Republican) vs Mitt (Koch Brothers & ALEC Dictator BOSS. Some choice! Egypt had some other candidates but the Brotherhood got rid of them in the primaries. Many of these people in the streets knew this would be coming when that happened. They've been waiting for this chance and the opportunity to run a secular non-Muslim candidate.
I hope Morsi gets thrown out, but fighting the Brotherhood is harder than fighting Mubarak because they are in too many countries. They aren't all Terrorists but they work with them as their army. I think the goal is to convert the World and thats the Peace they mean. Morsi must go.
I'm not sure, but who elected this guy? He helped with Israel and the Palestinians. It seemed that everything was fine until Morsi made this power grab. As I recall everyone screamed and hollered when Obama stated that he wasn't sure if Egypt was an ally. Life is complicated, isn't it?
He did not help with Palestine. He is giving legitamacy to Hamas and other jihadists and assisting in weapon transfers into Gaza by the tunnels. Even missels from Iran. Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood is not good for Egypt, Israel, Syrian rebels who are not Muslim, or even the US. ( they do hope to take over Syria after Asaad goes and have terrorist in there too who will turn on nonmuslim rebels)
Egypt was a US ally for almost 40 years.

Obama won by big margins in all of the top 10 states in education. Romney won in all of the bottom 10 states in education except Nevada. I guess it's easy to figure out where you live.

I don't have any statistics but I did national sales for about 16 years and learned where the hillbillies and rednecks live. And then I look at the bottom 10 states in education and they seem to be the same. And then I look at the states that republicans won by big margins and they are the same. I think I'm on to something here.

Looking at this board, I think we can come to the conclusion that republicans and democrats can not communicate. Congress would also be a good example of this. I think I know why. As DNA testing becomes more sophisticated, they will find that democrats and republicans are a slightly different species. Like they did with chimpanzees and bonobos. Chimpanzees are violent, unpredictable and the males totally dominate the females – like republicans. Bonobos are calm, civilized and the males and females are more equal – like democrats. While they can cross breed, you can not put chimpanzees and bonobos together as they will fight. Just like democrats and republicans.
The dividing line between Republicans and Democrats is an IQ of >100 and a high school diploma for the Democrats.

jim...i'm not religious. however, prochoice is bull s%$t. All pregnancy, excluding rape, is a choice. No matter the form of birth control used or not used, those individuals made the choice to have sex. To simply say they are not responsible for the choice, allowing them the careless ability to have that erased only demonstrates a lack of responsibility. It is similar to driving in the snow, even though you have snow tires, would you blame the snow for hitting the tree...or take responsibility for making the decision to drive in the snow in the first place. This type of thinking is all too prevalent in our society, if something happens people immediately look for others to blame for their choices. Rape is a different story, they should have the choice since it was not their choice in the beginning.

The author mentions nothing about judges and courts being appointed by the former dictator Mubarak and them trying to overturn all democratically elected instituitions, they disbanded the freely elected egyptian parliment, were standing on the way of all freely elected president's decrees and were planning to disband the constitution assembly, and later the president himself. They have been hindering the democratic process. That's like the supreme court disbanding an elected congress only few weeks after being elected and going then after the elected president.
Also, the author does not mention that the new constituition will not be a legal document until it is accepted in a public referrendum where all egyptians will vote freely if they want to adopt it or not.
The author forgets also that new articles in the new constitution limits the presidents term to 4 years only with only one additional term if re-elected.

Palestinians thought they were Syrians until 1919 when the Brits told them otherwise. Palestine was divided between Jordan and Egypt in 1948 and no Palestinian knew it was missing. They only became Palestinians after 1967 when it was part of a political struggle ("kampf", in German) against non-Muslims, especially the Jews. Thirty years of Jew-killing from 1919-1948, including WW2 recruitment of Muslims into the Waffen-SS, caused the Jews of Palestine to rebel against the Palestinian government and create the self-protection zone of Israel. SInce then Israel has become ever-more-modern, and Palestinians have stayed medieval. Even when given autonomy in 2005, Gaza is a mystic cesspool of police state violence. Muslim Brotherhood Egypt will be no better, just another sh1thole.

Gas averaged $ 1.87 a gallon the day Obama took office in 2009, it went up to almost $ 5.00 ( some states more) The average price per gallon for this year up to November is $ 3.67 a gallon, more then any other year in automotive American history.
Now with no fear of facing another election Obama will go about filling his real agenda for the United States, complete economic collapse.

George W Bush sure knew how to get the price of gas down. I'll bet Romney could have gotten gas down to less than $1.00 a gallon with his double down on Bush policies.
Your wrong Jimmy. Gas went down because Bush announced expanded domestic drilling in October of 2008. Within two weeks of his announcement gas began to fall.

Well Jim, Obama did insist the Muslim Brotherhood be in attendance when he spoke in Egypt and he did tell Mubarak a real friend to the United States to get the F out so no, he didn't directly support Morsi but indirectly yes. Kinda like when Carter stood by as the Shah was falling, he didn't DIRECTLY support Ayatollah Khomeini but he sure made it easy for him to come to power, we all know the rest of the Iranian story.

This shouldn't be a surprise to anyone. Only a blind man wouldn't have seen this coming. Mubarak was imperfect, but he was probably about as good a friend as the U.S. could reasonably expect in this region. His successor, Morsi, was bankrolled by the direct descendants of the original Muslim Brotherhood who killed Sadat over the Camp David Accords, among other things, and many times tried to kill Mubarak. Anyone pleading surprise simply hasn't been paying attention.

Cut off all aid to Egypt. Don't allow any Egyptians to enter the USA for any reason and deport all Egyptians from the USA and EU. Then deport the rest of muslims from the USA and EU.
