In my bouts of procrastination throughout the day I have seen that Syria has chemical weapons and there is something happening but they aren't moving any of the necessary parts, they may have nerve gas but certainly no activity is happening, and now, oh yes, they have it and are mixing it up in preparation to use it. It is with this knowledge that I can say with certainty that no one is willing to step in, no one was willing to previously, and it is out of the control of just about everyone posting here so if if Assad uses the weapons he uses them. I am sorry for the victims if or when he does deploy them.

As for the U.S. response, one could easily get after President Obama for his now hollow threat from August of moving them or prepping them for use as a red line. Assad is not the problem. It is the mentality and power structures that have emerged in middle eastern society. Take Assad out of power and the killing most definetly will not stop. It may only be the beginning. If saving lives is the goal, then Syria may need to be partitioned.

Make no mistake about it, Assad is going to use those weapons. For his regime, it's not only about regime survival, it's about racial survival. Assad is an Alawite, the government and military are predominantly Alawite; they make up about 10% of Syria's population, which means if they don't survive as a regime, they don't survive as a race.

Then there's the internal political dynamic: religious/racial minorities for whom their own racial survival is on the line should Assad's regime implode. Assad's boot on the throat of the Sunni majority in Syria allowed the various religious/racial minorities to survive and thrive in a part of the world where, under more traditional regimes, they certainly would not have. It does not matter whether people comprising these groups love Assad or hate him, their fate is tied to him because they benefitted from his regime. If you're part of one of these religious/racial minorities, and you hate Assad's guts, you're going to do what anyone else in a similar position anywhere in the world is going to do: hold your nose and benefit from the guy being in power because all other options totally suck, unless you like the idea of having the secret police all over your ass or think being a political minority and having the majority's boot on your throat is a good time.

Bottom line: he's going to use chemical weapons. If the Alawites do not survive as a race in Syria, whether it be through extermination or expatriation, Assad is going to make damned sure the Sunni majority pays an unimaginable price for the removal of his regime. If Assad is going to leave feet first, it won't be until he's sure an Alawite population can return at a later date to re-establish Alawite rule, and obliterating the Sunni population is a pre-requisite for that to happen.

Another thing to make no mistake about: Obama will finish this guy, and finish him in a devastating manner, once he fires those chemical weapons. One thing Obama understands better than anyone we've had in the White House is how to throw the set-up strikes that leave the opponent wide open for the highlight reel kill shot, and the set-up strikes have already been thrown. Wow I am amazed at how bad the Middle east is getting. Even I never thought it would be this chaotic this quickly. First you have Arab spring. Then we have already forgotten about the latest rocket launcher over the boarder of Israel. Egypt now looks like it is no closer to a resolution than when the revolution started. Syria's rebellion is continuing to escalate even more. Heck, I barely even remember Lybia at this point. So what's next? Will it have something to do with Iran? I don't know, but it seems like the entire region is exploding at once. I think good can eventually rise from the ashes of these revolutions, but only if we play our cards right and don't let dictators or radical Islamic extremist groups take over. That's why Egypt is such a mess despite successfully rebelling against Mubarak. And Syria is no exception. If you are a grandparent as you say, then I might suggest moving past some of our older threats. You might have been old enough to live through them, but times have changed. Particularly WWII and the Cold War. While I don't trust Putin as far as I can throw him, I don't believe he is so stupid as to restart the Cold War or that the people would let him. Russia is no longer the Soviet Union, and they are know where near our biggest threat. Germany has come a long way since WWII and is now an ally. It seems to me like you make a lot of comparisons to those old regimes when it generally isn't necessary or relevant. I just think that while we should not be lax, this constant high alertness attitude from the Cold War era tends to make mountains out of molehills. That, and our government is not out to get us. Although, I will admit we elect plenty of tools into our government.

Btw, I just think it is worth mentioning that the current "government" in Syria is far worse than anything they have in Egypt (at least yet we'll see how that evolves, and if Morsi holds on to power what that entails). Did you know that Syria has been the country with the most state sponsored terrorism in the entire planet? Yes, this Syrian "government" that their people are rebelling against now has achieved that. It is well known they had training camps for them (the terrorists) and yet we went into Iraq instead. Don't get me wrong, I don't miss Saddam Hussein one bit. But he had little to do with our country as far as threats go. While we were searching for "weapons of mass destruction" in Iraq, Syria was training terrorists to attack us and Israel. And they (Syria) are also one of the worst countries on Earth for as far as disregarding human rights. Heck, the people in Syria have no rights because any protesters are killed. It's no wonder they rebelled. Under this thankfully crumbling regime, Syria has had as nasty a "government" as anywhere else on the planet.

So what's Syria worth to me personally? A chance to take that country out of radical extremist control and end the threat of state sponsored terrorism (including the terrorist training camps) from there would be nice. Other than that, I don't care all that much so long as it doesn't fall back into state sponsored terrorism again.

@ Muw, my point was that people spend too much time worrying about Russia and China, when we should be worrying about terrorist threats. No country who has any level of respectable military power is dumb enough to start a war with the USA. We are still the most powerful nation on earth. While it is true China and Russia do shady things sometimes, by now they know better not to start a war with us. I also think you should have a little more faith in our government. The way you call about treason in our government speaks to that unrealistically radical view you have of them.

And my point about Syria was about how the Syrian government specifically sponsors these terrorists, including their training. You claim supporting the rebellion is supporting terrorism, but in reality it has been the current and thankfully falling Syrian government which sponsors it regularly. While there have been stories about the possibility of radical Muslim extremist groups fighting in various rebel armies (and it is just like them to do that), the majority of people are innocent and are only rebelling because the government there has been so terrible to them. The reason why we must be involved, is to make sure that when the rebels wins and overthrow this awful Syrian government, these terrorists who have hidden themselves amongst the revolutionary cause don't get the chance to seize weapons and/or power. But if the current Syrian government somehow survived, they would continue to support terrorism anyways. The best chance to avoid state sponsored terrorism in Syria would be to support the revolution, but also to make sure that the terrorists don't infiltrate it or the eventual new Syrian government.

I think the US starts by a no fly zone across Syria, next wrecking the runways, then if that doesn't work you start on their planes, next the warehouses that hold chemical weapons. You just ratchet up until there are no Syria planes in the air, for whatever reason.

Obama's threat to take some unspecified action if Syria USES the WMD is simply foolish and too late. Action should have already been taken to stop the ongoing slaughter. But if the use of WMD is going to be the lynch pin, then use should not be the trigger, but preparation for use should. Once mixed the mixture is, purportedly, only viable for 60 days before it goes impotent. So, clearly, mixing and loading sends a clear signal of intention to use and that is the point at which action must be taken.

BTW, the reports are indicating that the delivery mode is aerosol, which means that a wider swath of death and destruction will be cut if the stuff is used.

In the meantime, we are learning more about Obama's true reason for playing hide the ball on the Benghazi matter. See today's NYT, where it is being reported that Obama supplied weapons were used by the terrorist that killed our Ambassador and the 3 other brave Americans and the CIA scrubbed the site post attack. To sum up today's WAPO article concerning Hillary's trip to speak with the Russians about Assad. Russian is not going to back any military action against Assad. Obama has no intention of taking military action, but is sending Clinton to speak with the Russians about withdrawing support for Assad. Which the Russians are not likely to do. But even if they did, Assad has no intention of stepping down, and without military action to force him to do so, he is not going to voluntarily leave. With or without the Russians backing him, he will use every means at his disposal to try and retain power. Including the WMD already mixed, loaded and ready to go once the order comes down. And when he does so it will expose Obama, once again, to be a paper tiger.

The only thing I would say is that the Syria "government" has consistently been a strong supporter of terrorism. While Saddam Hussein was a brutal dictator, he was not much of a threat to our country personally. He kicked the terrorist out for the most part, although you could argue he was just as crazy and committed his own acts of terror against his people and people in neighboring regions. In a way though, he was sort of like a rock in the region in the sense that he was a counter balance to other countries. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad he's gone. But Syria was a far bigger threat at that time to our national security, and still is, with all the state sponsored terrorism they are known to endorse and even train. Iran is another one. While the United States was looking for "weapons of mass destruction" in Iraq, Syria was funding and sponsoring the training camps of radical terrorist organizations to attack Israel and the western world. So having said that, I think it is not necessarily a bad thing to endorse the action against Syria but not the war on Iraq if we follow that line of reasoning. We just need to make sure the new government doesn't end up like it has in Egypt. And for the record, I'm NOT a Democrat. I'm an Independent.

Why obviously not ? There is nothing that would indicate that something in the bible is not accurate. Yes there have been feeble attempts from many people who try to disprove , or show errors, but each are easily rebutted and explained. Even though I never indicated I was a Christian, you did make a best guess at assuming I am one. Even if i wasnt one, even if I turned my back on God , I still recognize the history of biblical scholarly accurate. As for buddha what makes him different or any other religion or God, is that none of them makes the claim the Jesus did, that he is the only one, the son of God, and also is the only one to arise from the dead and live again , and ascend into heaven.

I wouldnt say that syria or any other middle east conflict would indicate some biblical prophecy being fulfilled, but it would be considered an evidence of the wars that the bible talks about with the nations, wars and rumors of wars, and the increasing violence.

I am a devils advocate when it comes to anything with the bible. My human nature is to be rebelious towards God, I dont want to believe in it. I wasnt brain washed into it, or have some mental illness that makes me believe in God. Weapons of mass destruction are those that are intended to kill, indiscriminately, large numbers of people with little to no concern for collateral damage. That is true - and at that time, the media ran the stories and showed the horrific pictures of dead mothers clutching their dead babies. They all (the Republicans, the Democrats, the whole Worldwide community, AND THE MEDIA) knew full well that Iraq had WMD chemical weapons, and that they had used the WMD.

Fast forward a few years and we are told that WMD's never existed, that any claims that they did were a lie, and that the Republicans concocted that idea. That's wasn't true - WMDs did exist and everyone (the Republicans, the Democrats, the world, AND the Media) knew that they did.

I'm Canadian, and our troops were over there looking for WMD's too. We were never able to locate them, but ask the families of the 5,000 people killed in Kurdish Iraq - WMD's exist.

America wouldn't use gas, but what would America do if terrorists were in the country trying to overthrow the government. Assad isn't killing his own people, the terrorist are killing Syrian people. Assad is killing terrorists. America is just wanting to get their NATO yes men & puppets to attack, to keep the war machine making money. It's all about money.

The CIA had satellite photos showing that what this man was saying was a lie, but the US government and other world governments chose to ignore this evidence and we got the Iraq war. President Bush and Congress, both Republicans and Democrats backed this attack on Iraq and I pretty much believe it was for the benifit of the wealthy to earn profits at the expense of the lives of our soldiers. But I have a good memory, and I remember the CIA presenting their evidence in the news before this war started, showing where this Iraqi held in Germany was lying, where he stated supply trucks came and went to this factory, if they did, photographic evidence showed that these trucks would have had to drive through a wall. But that was ignored and we went to war. Corporations made billions of dollars, soldiers died, some even killed by these corporations who prospered. The average was each corporation made around $250,000 on every contract they had (they each had several to a dozen) for every American soldier who died in these wars. So figure these corporations made around 2 million dollars to 4 million dollars on every soldier's death. Now multiply that times 4000 and you can see exactly how much profits these corporations made off of these soldier's deaths during these wars! You won't find this name in many US history books, but it was Major General Butler (USMC) after WWI who wrote a book stating war is a racket conducted for the wealthy to prosper.

Our satellites over Syria now can read the time on peoples wristwatches. I am sure they can tell when the chemical weapons are worked on. The Israelis are there watching too. If Assad is really giving up, why not a few missiles into Israel, on bonus, he's going to be killed anyway, what does he have to lose by attacking Israel. Believe me Israel is watching things very, very closely, I'm sure the IAF has planes fueled up, and on standby this very minute.

Good god, some people just do not get it. I don't know of anybody that said Saddam didn't use chemical weapons against his people at some point, in the past. It was besides the point, which was actually what did he have AT THE TIME WE WERE THREATENING GOING TO WAR! We didn't have any (real) proof of that. And we, particularly, didn't have any (real) proof that he could attack us with them. I can still remember, clearly, Tony Blair saying we were going into Iraq because they were a threat to US. That was why the 40 minute claim was so important to him. Preemptive strikes against other sovereign nations are dangerous affairs, hence the need for him to be a direct threat, to us. Many people (like me) just didn't believe some of the bull we were being sold, and didn't want us going to war on that basis. And, hey, we were right.

Take a look at the episode concerning David Kelley, a weapons expert who refuted claims (being pushed by Bush/Blair) of certain mobile weapons factories. He wound up dying in, reportedly, strange circumstances. If nothing else, he was placed under a ridiculous amount of unwarranted scrutiny by government officials, contributing to his death.

Now, if Assad actually uses those chemical weapons, then it's a completely different story. Should I be surprised some of you refuse to understand that simple distinction? Well, yes, I should. But unfortunately I'm not. Because it's more important to you to try and score points than actual do some critical thinking.

Someone using chemical weapons is not looking for war. it cant be done. Its something the world agrees on. This is not looking. Its no different then using tactical nukes against people. It's like I've said. For Assad, this is all about survival of the Alawites as a race. He's going to use those chemical weapons but he's not going to use them until he knows two things. The first is that Alawite rule can be re-established by a return of expatriate Alawites. The other is that the attack will be large enough to decimate the Sunni population to the point where Alawites can return and once again put the boot on the Sunnis' throats, this time as a majority instead of a 10% minority.

In the most basic and primal of terms, if you care what you have to do to survive as a race, then you don't care enough about surviving as a race. Every decision Assad is making is a calculated decision toward one end: destroy the race he sees as the threat to his own race while being sure his race will survive regardless of whether or not he does.

Assad and his father have led Syria peacefully for 65 years, and all ethnic and racial groups have been treated with both during his reign. Under the Sharia Law that will come with the Muslim Brotherhood, even the Sufis, and all other sects of Islam will lose whatever rights they have left. Sunnis are 70% of their population, and will win every election, and the terror will really begin.

I should start by saying, "Please define your terms!!!" If by "these animals" he is referring to Assad and his inner circle, I'd say the comment would be consistent with a the attitude of a compassionate Christian. Compassion is sympathy for the suffering of others, such as say the thousands of civilians who will die a nasty death via sarin. I think a quick painless death would be merciful and kind. No one is saying Assad should be tortured.

If on the other hand the comments were a generalization directed towards Muslims, or Arabs or Syrians then there is nothing Christian about them. I was in the first gulf war and yes what a lot of folks here are saying is absolutely true. Those people are NOT fighting for any altruistic purpose. They have intentions of turning syria into another Iran and the other half have intentions of turning it into Egypt. The problem that you just cat seem to grasp is that, YES, all of the folks over there are exactly bat shirt crazy. Yes they dont love their children as much as they love blowing up anyone who doesnt believe what they believe. The west cannot help these people as they are simply at the lowest level of the gene pool.

WMDs in Iraq were not defined by the UN Team investigating the WMDs as "chemical weapons." Most of us distinctly recall when Condoleeza Rice was chastised by the 9/11 Commission for alluding to WMDs in Iraq. The WMDs Cheney and Bush were lying about never existed...those were nuclear WMDs....not chemical WMDs. That's the difference. The UN teams never found those rods needed to build WMDs of the nuclear kind.

Former President Clinton once stated that his greatest regret was not doing more to stop the killing of over 800,000 Rowandans in a more forceful manner. In his words, the US did "too little, too late."

Now, we are seeing another lunatic male power freak in Assad attempting to destroy his own people. Everyone (Republicans, Democrats, THE MEDIA, we Canadians) - everyone knew that the WMD's really did exist, and that Hussein had killed thousands with them. After, when the NATO forces (including we Canadians) were unable to locate them, the Media then created this Myth that the whole 'WMD claim' was a total fabrication by the Bush administration. Many people (particularly young people) believe that WMD's never existed and that the whole claims was a Bush lie.
