The radio DJs who prank called the hospital where Princess Kate Middleton was being treated are facing tremendous backlash following the death of one of the nurses who spoke with them. NBC's Annabel Roberts reports.
Updated at 8:30 a.m. ET: An Australian radio station that staged a prank phone call to the hospital where Duchess Kate was being treated has suspended the radio hosts involved and pulled all advertising after a nurse who was fooled by the call was found dead.

Jacintha Saldanha, who was found dead Friday, is seen in a handout photograph from London's Metropolitan Police.
Mel Greig and Michael Christian, radio hosts on the station 2Day FM in Sydney, called King Edward VII’s Hospital earlier in the week and pretended to be Queen Elizabeth and Prince Charles — and obtained information about Kate's closely watched pregnancy. They were said to be "shattered" by Jacintha Saldanha's death.
The body of Saldanha, 46, who had transferred their call through to Kate's room, was found Friday.
Rhys Holleran, CEO of the entertainment group that owns the radio station, announced at a press briefing that the show was suspended.
"Southern Cross Austereo and the hosts have mutually decided that the show will not return until further notice, out of respect for what can only be described as a tragedy," Holleran said.
"This is a tragic event, and one that we could never have foreseen," he said.
'Our beloved Jacintha'
Police said in a statement Saturday that an autopsy would be held next week and a formal inquiry into her death, called an inquest, would open at a future date at Westminster Coroner’s Court.
They released a statement on behalf of Saldanha’s family.
"We as a family are deeply saddened by the loss of our beloved Jacintha,” the family said. “We would ask that the media respect our privacy at this difficult time.”
Nurse who was duped by prank call about Duchess Kate found dead
News of Saldanha’s death sparked a storm of outrage, including a flood of harsh comments aimed at the Australian hosts on social media, including these, published on Twitter.
- "A husband without a wife and two kids without a mother! All thanks to you two @MelGreigHot30 & @MContheradio SHAME ON YOU! #royalprank" (@vratnay)"
- "Hope #MelGreig & #MichaelChristianrealise the consequences of their actions resulted in the death of a honest person#Jacintha #2DayFM"
- "Michael Christian and Mel Greig should never be allowed to broadcast again in the public domain for the rest of their lives, imbeciles!" (@ALG4"
Police have said the circumstances of Saldanha's death are unexplained.
King Edward VII hospital in London is still reeling from being seriously punked by two radio DJ's who called and spoke to Kate's nurse. Meanwhile, the two Australians DJs apologized for their hoax. NBC's Michelle Kosinski reports.
Radio DJs impersonate royals, get lowdown on Kate
There were at least two online petitions calling on the two to be dismissed for "gross misconduct," the Herald Sun reported.
The Sydney Morning Herald reported that Austereo announced that it was suspending all advertising on the station. That news came after supermarket chain Coles and telecommunications company Telstra announced they were pulling their ads from the station.
Duchess Kate discharged from the hospital
Holleran said the company was not commenting on the case, except to express condolences over the tragedy.
"We're very confident that we haven't done anything illegal," he said Saturday. "What happened was incredibly tragic and we're deeply saddened and we're incredibly affected by that.'
He also expressed concern for the hosts, who he described as "shattered" by the events.
Southern Cross Media Group CEO Rhys Holleran spoke to reporters concerning the death of Jacintha Saldanha, the nurse who was found dead after a radio prank call to Duchess Kate Middleton's hospital. He said that he and the radio hosts "were deeply saddened" and that the tragedy "could not have been reasonably foreseen."

yes i hope the gruesome twosome ar happy now, they will have to live with this for the rest ov ther lives..........enjoy
The djs should be brought up on charges. Identity theft at the least, invasion of privacy, inciting violence. you name it.
This is just awful. What a spot to be in. The callers claimed to be the the Queen and the Prince, what do you do? Tell them, "Soorrryyy, can't tell you anything" ?? She had to make a quick decision. Poor thing. Think about this, what would u have done?
Practical jokes (radio pranks are part of that classification) are a form of bullying. Everyone's medical status is their own business unless the patient chooses to make it public. This "joke" set off a chain of events at this woman's place of employment, her neighborhood, and her home that she was unable to bear. Being in the medical profession is stressful enough knowing that any mistake you make in the execution of your duties can result in someone elses injury or death. Then you have these two bafoons knowingly endangering someones livlihood for a few laughs? Unacceptable.
Tragic about the ladys death but not the fault of the DJs.
Screw the Royals
If the station were really serious about this, they would have been suspended after the phone call, not after the suicide. Now it's just reactionary.
What people need to understand is that what now passes for "news" has decades ago become part of the entertainment industry. Does not matterwhether it's presented by conservative Fox or the "mainstream", allegedly "liberal", media, or anything in between. The goal is sensationalism. These two clowns are hardly different from Assange or Rupert Murdoch, preying upon the gullible and the stupid, in an effort to create a "gotcha" moment to increase their ratings and "entertainment" value.
Really??Suicide over a prank is a bit much. That Saldanha chick had some serious problems if she makes a mistake and is so mortified by it she takes her life.
Lets put the shoe on the other foot:
You're in bed at 5AM and you get a phone call that your daughter (son, wife or a close relative not presently at home) has been severely injured and you need to come to the hospital to across town to see them before they pass. You get there and discover one of your buddies with a video camera, filming your reaction. Would you see the humor in such a prank or would you 'over-react' and cause THEM severe injury? After all it was 'just a prank'.
Floridaguy, how awful...tell me that never really happened to you....I would have done an Indiana Jones on the pranksters. (that scene where he just blows away the swordsman). At least I would have had real good fantasies about it.
@Floridaguy-1203070
Your penchant for gross exaggeration is absolutely mind-boggling. The is NO rational comparison between the imminent death of a loved one and pretending to be someone you're not in order to ask questions about the condition of a patient.
Hyperbole much?
Every time I see or hear of the Royal couple and their big news of their bundle of joy ,it will now have a cloud over it. Maybe they should give the world a break and stay out of the lime light for maybe...I don't know.....forever.
With any luck it will be a Jamaican baby.
Their intent, or hope was to make fun of, humiliate, or embarrass an unsuspecting, hardworking hospital employee(as opposed to a couple of bullies screwing around), knowing full well that if they were successful, someone would likely face the consequences of their so-called joke. They deserve whatever ill winds blow their way.
Whether this poor woman's death was accidental, natural and self-inflicted doesn't excuse the stupidity of the radio hosts. They were wasting the time of the professional staff at the hospital and had they actually been put through to the Duchess they would have been disturbing her and violating her privacy. The information they obtained was not theirs to obtain or to distribute and their act was childish and only served to feed into the media hysteria that cheapens human life and dignity in our soceity.
Two thoughts. First, it's about time these clowns learn there are consequences to pulling this idiocy. Whether this poor woman was unstable or not is irrelevant. If she committed suicide over the guilt and embarrassment she felt over the incident, that's on these two morons. Second, just because something is stupid doesn't automatically make it funny.
I work in healthcare and one thing is impressed on us - never give out information. I'm sure the nurse realized her mistake and was in a panic. The results will show what she died from - however, it is a tragedy no matter what the cause. Good example of "think" before you act.
She is not the one who gave out the info. She just transferred the call to the room.
It was a darn joke, and maybe a bad one. But one has to admit that the British take their Queen and the Royals very seriously, almost borderline ridiculous in my opinion.
She should have done some talk shows.Had fun with this and made some money.
This debate is silly. The DJs made a simple call, the intent of which was quite harmless. Without the death of the nurse, we'd still all be chuckling over the humorous incident. If the death of the nurse was in any way related to the call, then I believe the fault is with the mentality of the "Royals Culture" in the UK, not with some innocent prank by some Aussies on the other side of the world.
Okay... as a former broadcasting professional,.. I have witnessed alot of these so called "pranks" to get ratings. There are tons of shock jocks out there who attempt to raise listenership to pump up ratings, and drive up the advertising rates!!! This ticks me of so bad, I can't even describe how angry it makes me.
These jerks (Barbie and Ken) should be yanked out of the business, and NEVER work in it AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The fact is I see tooooo many journalists, and radio broadcasters on witch hunts, fabricating facts, and deliverately tantalizing our need to hate someone. The fact of the matter is these idiots have a target audience that loves their antics, and radio management sees nothing wrong with it. Had this woman not killed herself, they would be doing business as usual. The management at these stations should be yanked as well!!
"This is a tragic event, and one that we could never have foreseen," he said. But in reality, there WAS a way to foresee the tragedy. It's called empathy, and thinking about the consequences before you do something. When anyone uses other people for the amusement of others, it can cause harm. The real tragedy will be if those responsible for airing these announcers fail to learn from this. I really fail to see the difference between fooling this poor woman for personal gain and the kind of bullying that goes on with children (cyber or otherwise) that leads to so many suicides and depression. Equally, the listeners that think it's OK to laugh at people that get taken advantage of should think, too, and not reward the jockeys or the radio station for doing this. Just sayin,.
This radio station -- 2Day -- is considered a "SHOCK" station in Australia -- calling women in public office "fat slag" and "piece of @!$%#" on air. This time the station went too far in their tasteless and cruel tactics. I hope the family of that poor woman sue the station and shut it down. People lacking in compassion and integrity would pull a juvenile prank like that, and careless, opportunistic people would air the recording. Private citizens are not accustomed to being thrown, against their agreement, into the international spotlight. Airing that recorded call -- and whether that was legal remains to be known -- was the equivalent of bullying the two nurses involved. Impersonating the Queen of England? The Prince? To get access to private, medical information? What about this entire thing is funny and legal? And so, the DJ's are pulled off the air for a few days, the station says it's confident it committed no illegal acts. Well - what about morality. What kind of people do something like this. Please, Australia -- shut down a station that thinks bullying can be wiped away with an apology -- after they've aired the bullying. IF they were sorry -- why did they air it in the first place? Shameful. Disgraceful. Disgusting. I hope that family sues 2Day into bankruptcy.
If she committed suicide, then it would seem her reaction was an extreme over reaction to a prank, or as some suggested she had other problems and this was a "last straw".
While this article does not mention whether it was or wasn't a suicide, a number of other accounts, have said that it is a "likely" suicide.
I mean seriously, someone embarasses you, and you commit suicide ?
It couldn't have been foreseen, its not like driving drunk on the freeway, or shooting a gun into a crowd.
Yes it is childish stunt, that is done on a lot of radio stations, but to prosecute the DJ's for her death, is more than going too far.
I mean all they did was get through to Kate's ward, and ask about her condition, pretending to be a relative. Even Prince Charles got a bit of a laugh out of it.
Yeah, it's her fault - she was screwed up in the head. She deserved it. I mean, the jocks had every right to take advantage of her, because fooling other people is funny, It's better airplay to just take advantage of her because it brings better ratings... and they were totally within their rights not to have to think about what might happen. Or maybe they did, and they could not have cared less. So I wonder why they are feeling sad right now...
No she didnt deserve it, but at the same time, there is no way to foresee that she would kill herself over this either.
I didn't say she was screwed up in the head, just that is one possibility since her response was beyond the norm.
This is akin to calling someone dumb, and they off themself. Perhaps you shouldn't say someone is dumb, but that clearly isn't the response you expect.
Of course the DJ's feel bad about it, I feel bad about it, and I had nothing to do with it.
The DJ's are done. Once advertisers start cancelling ads, the station is going to feed these two to the lions so fast that even the Romans will be impressed.
Feed these two to the lions so fast that even the Romans will be impressed.
That's pretty funny.
they should both be required to go to the funeral, to see what their radio comments can emotionally do too people
it is the insanity of what radio jocks think they can get away with, now pay the price
This IS a very sad set of circumstances...but come on....it was intended as a harmless prank that all radio stations do around the world. It's nothing new and the DJ's are being blamed (and will probably lose their jobs) for this women's death??? I'm sorry, but there was much more going on in this women's life besides being the victim of a prank that caused this to happen. Everyone is in an uproar because it's in the world news and the Royal Family was involved....we need to "lighten up" and look at the REAL reason why this happened...because it certainly wasn't because of a phone pranke...regardless who was involved.
People should be aware of the unintended consequences of their actions. Collateral damage means so much more to those who are damaged by an action. People bear full responsibility for their own actions as well as some responsibilty for the unintended consequences. So often, we've all heard someone say, "I was only joking," but always after the damage has already been done.
From some posts I read... You people are taking this too seriious just as they did. What are we like the British that have toothpicks up our a*s*s?. This was a prank call intended to hurt no one. All they did was ask questions on her health. Was this a bomb threat call or a threat to her life. What was the BIG deal? It is tragic the nurse did what she did but for what? What, she is marked for life? And the media is making it seem like these Disc Jocks are all to blame. Sometimes I catch "Carmen" on B96 prank calling. This is the Chicago radion station supporting her pranks and they are incredibly funny. Should we stop all jokes in life? Should we have a toothpick up our ass and be serious all the time?
This was the obtaining of private medical information using fraudulent means. You do that here and you will end up someones punk in a Federal pen. This doesn't even consider the 2 genius' airing the recording in an attempt to humiliate the nurse resulting in her death. People like you are why things like this happen.
I sympathize for you too Nibor. You judged me on one comment and you know me very well good for you. People like you is why people no longer wanna live life to the fullest because everything is made into a legal aggenda. What was the big deal here. I read your other post and you mentioned privacy violations. Hey, I agree with you. Throw the book at them and jail if need be. But, but, don't blame them for anything more than obtaining medical information in a fraudulent way. That's it way>
