Subscribe to RSSKABUL, Afghanistan -- An American citizen abducted by the Taliban five days ago was rescued Sunday in eastern Afghanistan, the U.S.-led military coalition said.
Dr. Dilip Joseph was captured by Taliban insurgents Wednesday outside the Afghan capital, in the Sarobi district of Kabul province, a statement by the coalition said.
He was rescued in an early morning operation ordered after intelligence showed that the doctor was in imminent danger of injury or possible death, according to a statement.
A non-profit organization called Morning Star Development said in a statement that Joseph worked as its medical adviser and is from Colorado Springs.
Morning Star said Joseph and two other staff members had been returning from a visit to one of its rural medical clinics when the kidnappers stopped their vehicle. The three were then taken to a mountainous area about 50 miles from the Pakistan border, Morning Star said.
The two other workers were released about 11 hours before Joseph's rescue, Morning Star said. Joseph was taken to Bagram Airfield north of Kabul after his rescue and appeared to be unhurt, the statement said.
On its website, Morning Star describes itself as a non-profit dedicated to community development in Afghanistan.
Gen. John Allen, the top commander of U.S. forces in Afghanistan, said American and Afghan forces planned, rehearsed and successfully conducted the operation.
"Thanks to them, Dr. Joseph will soon be rejoining his family and loved ones," Allen said.
Details of the rescue operation were not released.

Is this NGO going to pay for the rescue? They should be charged for the time and costs associated with the rescue and then they may learn not to go into harms way. No American military should have to put their lives at risk for stupidity.

Good news indeed, but why people have to bring religion into everything? "Amen"? Is it so difficult to leave it at home? Not everyone here is a believer. It is offensive in rational discourse. If you're using the word only to indicate agreement, perhaps you can do this more neutrally instead.

You want him to deal with religion then you yourself need to deal with his beliefs or lack there of. Religious people get tired of hearing none religious people and non religious people get tired of hearing religious. Both sides need to get over it. It is perfectly fine for someone to share their thoughts and attribute them to there beliefs and it is perfectly fine for the opposite. Telling someone to "STFU" doesn't help the situation. The word "Amen" actually means "so be it" and is of ancient origin. It predates Christianity, and isn't religious in and of itself. Many people falsely think it is from Judaism, but it's even older. With a triconsonantal root from which the word comes. Which is common to a number of Semitic Languages such as Aramaic and Arabic .Which use it similar.
After adopting its use, later it spread to Islam, Greek and afterward English. With the translation of biblical writings it showed up in Christianity. Although amen, in Judaism, is commonly stated as a response to a blessing, it is also often used as an affirmation of any declaration. Even as it is still used in non-religious situations as confirming, or "I agree" with what has been spoken. Where we might say, "Okay." The difference is custom and culture of language use and others will say Amen, in non-religious situations as well as religious ones.

Amnesia? Because President Obama sent almost a hundred thousand overpaid too expensive privilaged US Civilians to Afghanistan as his US Civilian Surge since August 2009. And most of you that were NOT here, claimed that was not true (many Obama Supporters started name calling).
We watched in disgust as many US Military Conventional Warfare Units and their Afghan Translators were pulled (made unavailable) for US Military Combat Operations to perform Guard Duty of the US Civilians, as whole Platoons of US Military Infantry guarding one or two US Civilians standing in the middle of a open field as sitting duck targets teaching Afghans to use Tractors to farm; that the Afghans will never have nor even have the fuel for. And after the Afghans go home from the classes that night the Taliban find them and chop off body parts as a warning not to go back to the classes, and why aren't the US Military available to do Night Patrols to stop the Taliban, because they are performing guard duty on other US Civilians (secure Hotels with swiming pools, banquets, etc.).
Bottomline: The US Civilians are here to make tons of MONEY* at the Expense of the Afghans and the US Military (paid below minimum wages while living in plywood lined holes in the ground or sandbagged modified shipping containers while eating crap that is served to prisoners at the US, wait for the propaganda videos for Christmas, New Years, etc. (near Arctic Winter here) that are like the German WWII films of Germans Soldiers enjoying the Russian Front). That is the TRUTH that all of you Obama Supporters do not "like" as emotive non factual opinions.
*example: Just a US Civilian Truck Drivers makes $200,000 per year probationary then $300,000, plus all benefits of US Department of State, and US Military. Lives at a secure Hotel guarded by US Military. Other US Civilians perform maintenance for the Trucks.
US Military Truck Driver makes $35,000 per year (including Hazardous Duty Pay aka "Combat Pay"). Performs Convoy Security as a Combatant, that the US Civilian Truck Drivers does not do. The Military gets payed by Military pay scale, Plus Combat/Hazardous Duty Pay and is relieved from paying Income Tax, and some states stop Taxing during times of War on when you are in a War Zone.
You only know a smidgin of things, just enough to make a civilian believe you. You don't talk like any Highly motivated and trained Individual. I know one thing for sure you have never been to Airborne School let alone Advanced Infantry Training School.

Well, Old Timer, they are coming home. In ordor to accomplish it it does have to be done in a particular manner. You just can't say,"Ok lets head to the Airfield and go home." I'm really surprised at all the Civilians with what they've been through thinking life is a cake walk. Being in a place like Afghanistan is not like being in the US, you can't pick up you marbles and go home when you feel like it.

Going overseas to some pathetic crap hole of a failed state to volunteer ones clinical services is honorable,--- been there done that. But it won't fix things in an active war zone. And it can put our brave, precious warriors at avoidable risk. If you have skills you'd like to share with the world, whatever the motivation (you might also just be a lonely, conflicted, glory seeker, as many in Medecins sans Frontiers, for example), at least use a little discretion. Pick a country mostly at peace. Better still, volunteer right here at home, where ones services are as appreciated/needed as anywhere. Or sign up, put on a uniform, and jump whole hog right into the mess. But don't put our soldiers at risk just to make yourself feel better. I am very pleased that no mention or details was made in this article of the US military unit/s involved in this hostage rescue operation. ever since the bin Laden operation, things have been getting more and more out of control on naming the units involved in these covert ops.

FYI: Research the US Military Asymmetric Warfare Forces (aka Special Warfare) Humanitarian Assistance Mission.
They (Red Cross Aid Workers) were told repeatedly prior to and after getting here to paint over the Red Cross with a Red Crescent, even repackage any Red Cross to Red Crescent at ANY Islamic Nation, as the Islamic Jihadists HATE (Attack with extreme violence) anything with Bright Red "Crusader's Crosses" on them.
The Aid Workers, Contractors, etc. are told to maintain continuous contact, not to deviate from their preplanned routes, routinely check their location, learn to read more accurate military maps and using a magnetic compass, and learn some basic phrases. And what do we get some of them ignore our briefings, many refuse to buy cheap cell phones and b!tch and moan because their US iPhone (locked) does not work (and yes, they put in cell phone relays all over the place, with these also used by the Taliban, Al Quada, etc. lookouts to warn them or remote detonated IEDs.). And who gets the blame, the US Department of State, the US Military and ISAF.

After the investigation it was found out that they were previously told to stay OUT of Badakhshan Province, and they thought that it was a quicker route to get to Kabul so they ordered the driver to deviate from their preplanned (approved) route.
