KABUL, Afghanistan -- An American citizen abducted by the Taliban five days ago was rescued Sunday in eastern Afghanistan, the U.S.-led military coalition said.
Dr. Dilip Joseph was captured by Taliban insurgents Wednesday outside the Afghan capital, in the Sarobi district of Kabul province, a statement by the coalition said.
He was rescued in an early morning operation ordered after intelligence showed that the doctor was in imminent danger of injury or possible death, according to a statement.
A non-profit organization called Morning Star Development said in a statement that Joseph worked as its medical adviser and is from Colorado Springs.
Morning Star said Joseph and two other staff members had been returning from a visit to one of its rural medical clinics when the kidnappers stopped their vehicle. The three were then taken to a mountainous area about 50 miles from the Pakistan border, Morning Star said.
The two other workers were released about 11 hours before Joseph's rescue, Morning Star said. Joseph was taken to Bagram Airfield north of Kabul after his rescue and appeared to be unhurt, the statement said.
On its website, Morning Star describes itself as a non-profit dedicated to community development in Afghanistan.
Gen. John Allen, the top commander of U.S. forces in Afghanistan, said American and Afghan forces planned, rehearsed and successfully conducted the operation.
"Thanks to them, Dr. Joseph will soon be rejoining his family and loved ones," Allen said.
Details of the rescue operation were not released.

I'm happy to see the good doctor will be able to join his family for the holidays...
I agree completely. Safe journey home Doc.
the good doctor ought to keep his good butt at home...stay out of them crap holes countrys...hate to see some body get killed going to save his ass...
I am glad the American citizen is on his way home.As for religion?I can assure you that there are a few Taliban insurgents that are having a religeous experience right now but, are unable to share the information with us in the land of the living.I will sleep better knowing there are a few less rag heads to look for in the morning.
bet no Tallies walked away
It's a sad, scary world we live in. Thank God for the good ending to this one!
"Thank you President Obama" from the Joseph's family.
You'll see USA successfully rescue our own "but", you'll "never" see the Taliban rescue their own as unorganized as they are.
Here this guy went over there to help out their fellow Countrymen and all they can do is give him the fear in his eye's that any minute, they're going to behead him. That's gotta be the absolute worst feeling anyone could ever go through.
He'll be a changed man for life. Hope he can emotionally recover...
Merry Christmas Dr. Joseph and Thank You for all your efforts for working on keeping humanity healthy regardless of the dangers...
Is this NGO going to pay for the rescue? They should be charged for the time and costs associated with the rescue and then they may learn not to go into harms way. No American military should have to put their lives at risk for stupidity.
Do NOT thank President Obama, thank the one of us that gave his life while conducting the Triple R Mission of Rescue, Recapture, Recovery.
But of course you know one of us got killed because you are not here.
ANY TIME you hear "Imminent Danger " that means we did not wait for the Authorization from the Politicians indecisions, Political Distancing, etc..
From the Article:
And REMF Poker0123 post#11.4, you write that letter home thanking that US Military Asymmetric Warfare Soldier's Family for his Ultimate Sacrifice to rescue someone that should not have even been here in the first place (attempting the US Military Asymmetric Warfare Humanitarian Assistance Mission). And our sh!tty attitude of not wanting to be here is why we have the attitude of getting the mission done so we all can go home, meaning we get RESULTS, and not your rah, rah, rah patriotism and lame excuses.
Amen, IH.
And I am happy to see a good-news story here.
Good news indeed, but why people have to bring religion into everything? "Amen"? Is it so difficult to leave it at home? Not everyone here is a believer. It is offensive in rational discourse. If you're using the word only to indicate agreement, perhaps you can do this more neutrally instead.
STFU...Religion is everywhere. Deal with it or stay closed up in your house with no connections to the outside world.
Amen!
You want him to deal with religion then you yourself need to deal with his beliefs or lack there of. Religious people get tired of hearing none religious people and non religious people get tired of hearing religious. Both sides need to get over it. It is perfectly fine for someone to share their thoughts and attribute them to there beliefs and it is perfectly fine for the opposite. Telling someone to "STFU" doesn't help the situation. Next time try shedding some light to why it is perfectly fine to use the phrase Amen and then you might get a little farther with the people with different views.
You can STFU too
Don't worry pissed... I will still pray for your well being.
Be careful with saying you are going to pray for me. Someone may get offended! But thanks, so nice of you to offer.
LOL it is like water off my back. Most times I just ignore the religious and anti rants, but bored at work atm so figured I would chime in.
I feel ya...
AB-1981(Good news indeed, but why people have to bring religion into everything? "Amen"?)
carlson3042 -(Next time try shedding some light to why it is perfectly fine to use the phrase Amen and then you might get a little farther with the people with different views.)
Ask and yea shall receive-
The word "Amen" actually means "so be it" and is of ancient origin. It predates Christianity, and isn't religious in and of itself. Many people falsely think it is from Judaism, but it's even older. With a triconsonantal root from which the word comes. Which is common to a number of Semitic Languages such as Aramaic and Arabic .Which use it similar.
After adopting its use, later it spread to Islam, Greek and afterward English. With the translation of biblical writings it showed up in Christianity. Although amen, in Judaism, is commonly stated as a response to a blessing, it is also often used as an affirmation of any declaration. Even as it is still used in non-religious situations as confirming, or "I agree" with what has been spoken. Where we might say, "Okay." The difference is custom and culture of language use and others will say Amen, in non-religious situations as well as religious ones.
Well, I'm sad he was taken in the first place. He goes out there to work and help people and this happens. Many of our soldiers are in the same predicament and worse.
Nice Job ISAF. Keep up the good work, thanks for all you do. I hope you all have great holidays away from home, helping us have ours safe at home.
Boy this must have pissed Obama off, to thwart his people this way. Some GI's are gonna pay
... said the retard.
Instead of being happy for the doctor, your retarded mind has somehow twisted this into an anti-Obama rant.
Every time I start to get tired of gloating and rubbing it in, another one of you comes along and makes it fun again! Four more years, loser, then you can gripe about Hillary.
In the meantime, I think I'll crap on you now... SPLORT!!! Ah, that felt good. Thanks!
why bother just ignore the poor comments name calling just show poor manners although get ready for taxagaddan 2013
Parratrooper: No, this did not piss off Obama.
@Parratrooper...dumbass
100% correct. Because President Obama and his supporters do not take Responsibility for anything they say or do.
Since August 2009 President Obama's US Civilian Surge of Hundreds of Thousands of Overpaid Too Expensive Privilaged US Civilians, as to where the Billions of US Taxpayer USDs are being spent instead of on the Afghans or the US Military Forces.
Shows just how much pissed...., -god and all the other President Obama Supporters do NOT know what the F**k is going on here as:
http://money.msn.com/investing/11-things-wrong-with-congress
We need to send all President Obama supporters here to guard all of President Obama's Overpaid Too Expensive Privilaged US Civilians. So that they can stand out in the open, doing static guard duty as sitting ducks as Taliban, Al Quada, Hamas Foreign Fighters, Chechen Foreign Fighters, Pakistanis Taliban, etc. targets. And no you do not get a "break", as after President Obama's recent withdrawal of 30,000 US Military means you keep doing that 24/7/7 until 2014 or until you are shot and wounded then evacuated or killed.
And does President Obama and his supporters listen to the "Subject Matter Experts" like General McKiernan, General McChrystal, Secretary of Defense Gates, etc., NOPE, President Obama just demands their Letters of Resignation for not being President Obama "Yes" Men and Women.
Oh, yes, happy holidays to all of you, the near Arctic Winter here at Northeastern Afghanistan will be coming soon. With us having to rely on the Afghans for support since the President Obama's US Military withdrawals have left us hanging without our previous US Military Support. Like I stated before President Obama and his supporters do not take Responsibility for the Consequences and Results of their Actions; just lame blame game excuses, resulting in more unnecessary deaths of US Citizens of the US Military.
YOUR ACTIONS HAVE CONSEQUENCES SO TAKE F**KING RESPONSIBILITY FOR YOUR ACTIONS pissed...., -god and all the other President Obama Supporters.
paratrooper, right, in your dreams. LMAO
@Dave: Take a damn chill pill. I'm not an Obama supporter, I just don't think he got pissed over this.
By the way, it's nice to know you are so intimately informed - oh wise swammie.
I don't have to take a chill pill, the f**king near Arctic Winter here is coming. See the photo slides of the article, keep clicking until you see the Kabul winter photo with the Pamir mountains in the background. We have had avalanches up here before.
Taken as a complement not an insult; as being informed and experienced is what has allowed us to survive, and not all the Not of the Real World Academic Idealistic Non Factual Nonsense of the Obama Supporters that has gotten a lot of us killed unnecessarily (the reason why I wanted General McChrystal to demand a Public US Congressional Hearing that would have made Public all of the "This Administration Does Not Know What It Is Doing"; (with the result of US Citizens of the US Military getting killed unnecessarily)). Instead being a loyal Democrat General McChrystal accepted President Obama's Deal to Retire as a Four Star General instead of a Three Star Lieutenant General to get General McChrystal's Letter of Resignation.
Most of us are glad that we can resubmit our Retirement Packets again to go back on Retirement again (does not mean they have to accept the Retirement Packets (requests); but, feels good anyway); as Generation X and Generation Y (Millennials) will have to deal with the problems created by President Obama Worldwide (don't ask us for help, you did not want our experienced advise as combat surviviors previously or now).
@Dave: Don't bother patting yourself on the back. I've seen greater depth in commentarty in a 200-level American History class.
Nope. Complements to my subordinates of the US Military that have kept me from making stup!d mistakes and kept us alive. We were a bunch of hard heads too and refused to listen to the expert advise of our predecessors, with the result of the almost thousand of us that started as the US Military Training Teams to US Ally Iraq during the Iran Iraq Wars, rotated to Operation Cyclone till now, only a few of us surviving.
As written by Non Participants from information from other Non Participants. Like I stated before Academic Idealistic (Politically Correct Rewritten History) Nonsense that only results in winning the Darwin Award in the Real Life or Death School of Hard Knocks. As far as "In Depth" Commentaries, I have limited my comments ever since most on Newsvine have indicated their lack of capabilities to concentrate and read long detailed posts based on firsthand experience.

And do not say that I do not know (about Teaching). From Firsthand experience after Retiring from the US Military (First time), the US Military had a program to become Teachers. So I became a Teacher at Inner City Combat Zone Public Schools (before Metal Detectors), that Second Career ended when I got Recalled to Active Duty in the special category (needs of national security, my dumb arse mistake of learning college level Farsi, Arabic, Pashtu, Dari, and culture of Islam).
Hey david-475776-
Still blaming Obama for what Bush started huh???? That dumb redneck doesn't know his a$$ hole in the wall. Get over it and move on. I'm not an Obama supporter, but I feel he was the lesser of the 2 evils this last Nov 6th. Even though I didn't vote because I wanted neither in office. But Romney is a lying, flip flopping IDIOT. Has any POTUS ever really taken responsibility for their actions? Within the last 100 years or so at least.
Hell the next thing you know some of these low informed, border line idiots will say that Bush had a hand in helping rescue the Dr.
Gotta hand it to them though, they don't know or realize they lost two elections, (to a black man) in a row. When they wake up to that fact, LOOK OUT.
John Doe, nicely put. Yes Obama was the less of two evils, and won by the same amount Bush did, and Bush's win was called a mandate by these idiots, and now are complaining that Obama didn't win by the same mandate. Go figure, only the dumb have that type of logic.
Ever heard of the 9/11 2001 Attacks John Doe-4952827. And do not even start up with the Uneducated "the Attackers came from Saudi Arabia crapola" as Fundamentalist Islam is not based on Nation of Origin. example: Fundamentalist Islamic Osama Bin Laden originally created his Fundamentalist Islamic Al Quada to Overthrow US Ally Saudi Arabian Government.
And here it is FOUR (4) Years Later after the First Term of President Obama and we are still here.
And yes, All POLITICIANS LIE, FLIP FLOP, especially the previous Lawyers trained to win their Arguments by any means like Errors of Omission (legalese term for LYING).
Did anyone else see the PBR and Corona signs in the bowling alley.? Brings a tear to your eye. If you can't see them now, they were shot out.
They are too blurry, maybe I need to drink another six pack with some shots to get your eagle vision.
Ed in MN, doesn't matter what kind of signs are there, most of the people there can't read or write. Reminds me of some of the low informed regressives that post here, they can't write or use spell check either. And their reading comprehension leaves a lot to be desired also.
are they sure this time they have the correct information their no you tube video that tells a different story now that the election is over the transparency is loosen up some
But....but....but......
Back to the good old days before the election:
Guess it is time to "decimate" the Taliban and "other" terrorist organizations in the ME and North Africa. Wait a minute........
That's a 2 month old Article, so what's your point? I didn't excatly see you crying when it was time for Bushs reelection and all the Terrorist leaders were hiding in this one town in Iraq. and they were fortifying for a defence of the city. The town was never assulted til after the election and cost more in lives than it should have. Where was you piddly whining than or you didn't say anything was it was Bush.
dudes toe is all over the line.
LOL! I thought the same thing when I seen the pic.
Saved from the chopping block.
why are american civilians in afganistan? is their ego that big they can think they can go to a war zone and one will harm them? this nut no matter how well meaning his mission was stupid, he is lucky he wasnt beheaded, andhe put our soilders in harms way to get his dumb butt out of trouble, if ihad anything to say about it? i w ould of said,, doc? you dont belong here,, you got yourself into this mess you get yourself out,i will never understand why we have such stupid citizens who like t o go watch the war in person and then expect us to bail them out when they get captured, and then feel sorry for them when they get beheaded, and killed, stupid people,if they want to watch? then join the military, i do not feel sorry for them,
well they still have opium...ole doc might want him some opium...save them patience some money on medicine...ya' never know...
Amnesia? Because President Obama sent almost a hundred thousand overpaid too expensive privilaged US Civilians to Afghanistan as his US Civilian Surge since August 2009. And most of you that were NOT here, claimed that was not true (many Obama Supporters started name calling).
We watched in disgust as many US Military Conventional Warfare Units and their Afghan Translators were pulled (made unavailable) for US Military Combat Operations to perform Guard Duty of the US Civilians, as whole Platoons of US Military Infantry guarding one or two US Civilians standing in the middle of a open field as sitting duck targets teaching Afghans to use Tractors to farm; that the Afghans will never have nor even have the fuel for. And after the Afghans go home from the classes that night the Taliban find them and chop off body parts as a warning not to go back to the classes, and why aren't the US Military available to do Night Patrols to stop the Taliban, because they are performing guard duty on other US Civilians (secure Hotels with swiming pools, banquets, etc.).
Bottomline: The US Civilians are here to make tons of MONEY* at the Expense of the Afghans and the US Military (paid below minimum wages while living in plywood lined holes in the ground or sandbagged modified shipping containers while eating crap that is served to prisoners at the US, wait for the propaganda videos for Christmas, New Years, etc. (near Arctic Winter here) that are like the German WWII films of Germans Soldiers enjoying the Russian Front). That is the TRUTH that all of you Obama Supporters do not "like" as emotive non factual opinions.
*example: Just a US Civilian Truck Drivers makes $200,000 per year probationary then $300,000, plus all benefits of US Department of State, and US Military. Lives at a secure Hotel guarded by US Military. Other US Civilians perform maintenance for the Trucks.
US Military Truck Driver makes $35,000 per year (including Hazardous Duty Pay aka "Combat Pay"). Performs Convoy Security as a Combatant, that the US Civilian Truck Drivers does not do. Lives in a modified shipping container, four US Military to a container. Performs Guard Duty for the Hotel of the US Civilians. Performs Operator Maintenance on Trucks.
OMG NO!!! He didn't send people over there to help the sick and wounded did he???? WHAT AN A$$!!!! David, I thank you for your service to this great country. But, I think you need a break. Your head will explode soon from anger. Or being stuck up your arse for too long.
Davie, enough of your sour ranting and bitter attitude. I am a CSM with 20yrs of service and several deployments under my belt. DO NOT MISS-REPRESENT ME, my profession, the country I so proudly serve for nor the Commander in Chief that keeps your pocket full of dollar bills (per your recollection).
As you perfectly stated, you are RETIRED. Stay on retirement!!! Our armed forces are on a voluntary basis, no one is forced to join in. You've done nothing but bad-mouth our military and our leaders, to include the President of the United States. It is time you shut your trap if you don't have anything constructive to say. I am sure you had the option to turn down your "re-call to duty". But you did not. Sure you could addressed the fact that you are overpaid for not doing a thing other than trashing our leadership and our mission abroad. But, you will not. Instead, you brag about having all that pocket change.
I feel deeply for my brothers and sisters in arms, for our subordinates, for the civilians serving our nation along side you, who must be subjected to tolerate your bitterness on a daily baisis. As if being away from home isn't hard enough already. People like you, with an attitude like yours can easily breakdown the morale of others in the organization. People like you, idealism like yours, a bad influence that risks our guys getting hurt or killed in theater.
If, and only if I had a say-so I would not hessitate to re-deploy your sorry arse back, out of the area of operations so you can sit in your retirement home and simmer with your twisted mind away from our guys who are doing their best to serve our great country and the freedom of our nation.
David your very questionable to me, take civilians to drive trucks in combat? A military trk drivers get $35,000 a year? Your problem here is you are trying to SPIN and be believed. The Military gets payed by Military pay scale, Plus Combat/Hazardous Duty Pay and is relieved from paying Income Tax, and some states stop Taxing during times of War on when you are in a War Zone.
You only know a smidgin of things, just enough to make a civilian believe you. You don't talk like any Highly motivated and trained Individual. I know one thing for sure you have never been to Airborne School let alone Advanced Infantry Training School.
He's probably never slept with a woman either, but sure does brag a lot, doesn't he? Typical YELLOW ELEPHANT. next he will be telling everyone how to win the "war on terrorism."
@Dave - Have you forgotten how we got into this useless, tragic and unfunded war?
Get a clue, YOU DO NOT SEND CIVILIANS INTO A WAR ZONE. The US Military Asymmetric Warfare Forces (aka Special Warfare) do the Humanitarian Assistance Mission in War Zones or the "Non Wars" of the UN Missions like UN Mission Somalia II aka Operation Continue Hope.
Truth is Truth, Facts are Facts. I could care less what Rank you are (no time in service, only 20 years of service CSM), and several deployments living on secure FOBs, COBs, Secure USAF Bases, Green Zones.
While we spend years of consecutive tours living with the locals while your arse was in the snack bar Stateside during the "Peacetime" US Military as a REMF.
LIST YOUR MOS AND LETTER DESIGNATOR Poker0123 AND BRANCH OF SERVICE.
Illiterate Poker0123, as I stated I have been recalled over and over again from Retirement in the special category (shows just how much you don't know about the special category).
Were did I brag about money Poker0123 your believing your own lies are consuming you.

Sure Rah, Rah, Rah Patriotism as 92% of US Citizens Refuse to do their Civic Duty and NEVER Served in the US Military (and do not tell me that does not matter, that is like a virgin writing a book on what it feels like to have sex with the opposite sex, or someone that never drove a vehicle writing a how to book.). While the 1% of US Citizens in the US Military are doing more than their "Fair Share". Candidate Obama during the 2008 Presidential Debates "US Military Service is a Civic Duty", "US Citizenship is not an Entitlement" with his solution to Force the 92% to do their Fair Share of instituting the Selective Service and or Mandatory Compulsory US Military Service (youtube.com).
Also Go ahead call First Lady Michelle Obama a liar (% currently Serving in US Military):

Prove It. Hint: I am NOT a "Cherry Jumper". And because I got my Air Assault Badge at Fort Campbell Kentucky before going to the Airborne School they tried to rub that Air Assault Badge off my chest in the saw dust pits, that was when we still wore Fatigues (switched back from Jungle Fatigues after Vietnam, unless you were with a Airborne Division or Special Warfare, then you wore Camoflagued Jungle Fatigues (not BDUs) like the USMC "Utilities" in my closet stateside (as trained with USMC).
No, I have NOT forgotten, as in October 2001 we were some of the first here.
Did YOU forget the the 9/11 2001 Attacks Neutral Observer1.
I can fling personal attacks also, as you have slept with many women also. Typical Chickenhawk.
Sure like I bragged about my time in service like Poker0123 or my Grade or number of deployments.
Uh, huh, like you know. VERY TYPICAL Chickenhawk.
How many people are put at risk rescuing and protecting these jackasses? What the hell are we doing there? No good reason in my mind. Let's all support our troops by bring them all home now.
Well, Old Timer, they are coming home. In ordor to accomplish it it does have to be done in a particular manner. You just can't say,"Ok lets head to the Airfield and go home." I'm really surprised at all the Civilians with what they've been through thinking life is a cake walk. Being in a place like Afghanistan is not like being in the US, you can't pick up you marbles and go home when you feel like it.
Why not?
White guilt ridden, dogooder liberals, many. Ya know, it's true that our nation-building military adventures in Iraq and Afghanistan were misguided, as was the disastrous intervention in Vietnam, and others. It's tough to admit, but wars really do seem to be scattered on the continuum of just-unjust, or wise-unwise, or dumb-really dumb. And it's easy to understand how the self-loathing liberal guilt Jones gets a goin', especially in certain sheltered, often religious, but basically decent folks. Going overseas to some pathetic crap hole of a failed state to volunteer ones clinical services is honorable,--- been there done that. But it won't fix things in an active war zone. And it can put our brave, precious warriors at avoidable risk. If you have skills you'd like to share with the world, whatever the motivation (you might also just be a lonely, conflicted, glory seeker, as many in Medecins sans Frontiers, for example), at least use a little discretion. Pick a country mostly at peace. Better still, volunteer right here at home, where ones services are as appreciated/needed as anywhere. Or sign up, put on a uniform, and jump whole hog right into the mess. But don't put our soldiers at risk just to make yourself feel better. There's an analogy here with sailors of small yachts who set off on off shore crossings, with limited passage making skills, and in unsound craft. Our Coast Guard heroes rescue these dip @!$%#es all the time, and occasionally a military family winds up without a loving dad. Don't be no fools, peebles. Just sayin'. Aa..
David 475776, bu lo dit tao, dit me dien cai dau.
When I served (Selective Service) at Vietnam, I spoke Francais.
But, speaking of vaginas "pussies", how is yours. Yes, I learned how to ask for that while there (young kid with raging hormones).
So it took 5 days to find the doctari. Bergdahl has not been found. Wonder why.
I am very pleased that no mention or details was made in this article of the US military unit/s involved in this hostage rescue operation. ever since the bin Laden operation, things have been getting more and more out of control on naming the units involved in these covert ops.
Critical times hard to deal with, will be here.
Hey Doc...?? You ready to bring your dumb ass home and take can of Americans??
The good doctor is from Colorado...
Why no body count? How many innocent bystanders killed? No wedding party? What about the drones? Where was the security in the first place? Why were the other captives released unharmed?
Thank you President Obama? From the family?
And my goodness Sally.... Did you get dumped for a younger woman again?
Exodus. Why all the questions? Why should our military advise you of everything that they do in AFghanistan? Do you have some data to provide or just more beer talk?
You know what this is? IT'S PRESIDENT OBAMAS FAULT. RepublicanWingnuts cant stand it!!! RepublicanWingnut heads always explode when good things like this happen...WHY? It's good for America but RepublicanWingnuts HATE IT!
this was not a 'good thing' an American died to save the life of this 'idiot', the Dr. went there of his own volition and should have been prepared for the consequences, just another failure of the current administration, you do recall Benghazi.. don't you???
In all my responses, except glad everyone is okay, I could only think how screwed the people are if what I thought were true.
Imagine now no Dr. will venture, or join in, to bringing medicine to anyone in such area's, as in my thought he should keep is arse out of there.
Imagine now no Dr. will venture anywhere without a military escort. May as well just let them get sick and die. Because once the Dr. and military escort leaves. The terrorist will make an example out of anyone they find with so much as a band-aide.
Any way you look at it, even to suggest let Dr's. of their own kind risk their lives to treat them. Well first I would imagine any that might be acceptable to religious style terrorist groups are far and fue, if at all. Because in what country is a, terrorist friendly or taliban background, wanna be Dr. going to get in to get the proper education?
Sure we have had plenty of middle east background students here for an education. But what percentage of those do you think came here to go back there and work for free? Or what percentage that passed being accepted to come here are already acceptable to move within the circle of terrorist to safely roam their own country?
Any way you look at it, the people are screwed, without the type of people with a character of concern for others above and beyond themselves. To venture in such foreign land unarmed and unguarded with only the red cross of medicine as their shield against raving lunatics with AK47s. Certainly not me or many of you either.
So yea, I'm glad he is okay and I hate the idea someone else had to risk their life to rescue him and I to think keep your arse home and that wouldn't happen to you.
But then again I have no where near the character to accept, whatever happens to me doesn't matter, as long as I can bring comfort to one sick or dieing child, that doesn't have any more to do with what is going on than I do, except that it is going on, outside their door.
maddy indabuff NY,
FYI: Research the US Military Asymmetric Warfare Forces (aka Special Warfare) Humanitarian Assistance Mission.
They (Red Cross Aid Workers) were told repeatedly prior to and after getting here to paint over the Red Cross with a Red Crescent, even repackage any Red Cross to Red Crescent at ANY Islamic Nation, as the Islamic Jihadists HATE (Attack with extreme violence) anything with Bright Red "Crusader's Crosses" on them.
The Aid Workers, Contractors, etc. are told to maintain continuous contact, not to deviate from their preplanned routes, routinely check their location, learn to read more accurate military maps and using a magnetic compass, and learn some basic phrases. And what do we get some of them ignore our briefings, many refuse to buy cheap cell phones and b!tch and moan because their US iPhone (locked) does not work (and yes, they put in cell phone relays all over the place, with these also used by the Taliban, Al Quada, etc. lookouts to warn them or remote detonated IEDs.). And who gets the blame, the US Department of State, the US Military and ISAF.
10 aid workers killed in Afghanistan
http://www.cbc.ca/news/world/story/2010/08/07/aid-workers-killed-afghanistan.html
After the investigation it was found out that they were previously told to stay OUT of Badakhshan Province, and they thought that it was a quicker route to get to Kabul so they ordered the driver to deviate from their preplanned (approved) route.
Yet another success of Bush administration foreign policy. Way to go Dubya! Way to go Cheney!
too many fools on here think that shedding the blood of a fighting American to rescue a Dr. from a place he should never have been is justified... I strongly disagree and believe that the delusional who venture into a war zone unprotected and against the advice of people who advise them not to, are at their peril and deserve the best efforts of our Secretary of State and the 'diplomatic corps' to return them to safety... good luck with that...
