US-born heiress clutching a cocaine pipe when found dead in London home, coroner says

Eva Rausing and her husband Hans Kristian Rausing appear at an event in 2010.

LONDON -- The American wife of one of Britain's richest men, whose body lay rotting at their London home for two months after her death, died from cocaine abuse, a coroner said Friday.

Eva Rausing, whose husband Hans is heir to a fortune from the Swedish packaging firm Tetra Pak, was found in July in an advanced state of decomposition under layers of clothes and garbage bags in a fly-infested room on the second floor of their six-story townhouse in an upmarket area of London.

The 48-year-old's body was only discovered after police officers went to their house after stopping her husband for driving erratically.

Multi-millionaire Rausing pleads guilty to preventing US-born wife's burial

She was found holding a silver foil, which had been rolled up as a pipe, indicating it had been used for smoking cocaine. A post-mortem established that she had died more than two months earlier in May.

Deputy coroner Shirley Radcliffe ruled that Rausing, who suffered from the heart condition tricuspid valve disease and had had a pacemaker fitted, had died from cocaine intoxication.

Husband 'devastated'
Hans Rausing, who was given a suspended 10-month jail sentence in August for preventing the "lawful and decent" burial of his wife, said he had not been able to deal with losing her.

"I'm devastated by my beloved wife's death," he said in a statement read to Westminster Coroners' Court. "I could not cope with her dying or confront the reality of her death."

He said he had been in the bathroom shaving when he heard her slide off the bed.

Police struggle to shed light on US-born heiress' death

"She landed sideways and her head was resting on a pillow. I tried to pull her up. I shouted 'Eva, Eva, Eva,'" he said, before covering her body with blankets and bedding.

The couple, who have four children, had a long history of problems with drugs. They first met at a U.S. rehabilitation center and gave generously to addiction treatment centers.

Eva Rausing's family has said it believed she turned to drugs in her late teens to overcome acute shyness.

The Swedish Rausing family made a fortune by building up the Tetra Pak drinks packaging business, but Hans' father sold his share of it to his brother in the 1990s, and is now worth an estimated $10 billion, according to Forbes magazine.

So... she was, she was a "crack head".

It is just so tragic that a drug as sinister as crack can take someone completely down and suck the life right out of them. So very sad. I have known a couple of people that have crashed and burned on this stuff and have yet to recover even with many rehab stints. It really just stuns me.

Crack is Whack.

I better check my Swedish Family history album - I think I'm related to this family.

and how many people drink them selves to death each day? 151 Rum almost killed me when I was young - it sold me on weed. According to D.A.R.E; moderation isn't worth teaching.

Don't know how to respond to this but I'll try. Why in the hell do you smoke this when it's easier to snort it(I used to), If your trying to get"higher" then go outside and start digging. Plus the other thing is, if your that rich you can afford quality not quantity, Plus if you got a F--kup'd heart why do you do it, it's cool when your young, but when you get older, well times change. Ain't done coke or speed(meth) since I've been about 30, now I have an enlarged heart and it's cool, at one point you have to get high on something else, would like to do the stuff I used to do and Thank God He won't let me find somebody except for every once in a while(I think it's me, but at least He modifies me so I don't get so stupid as these people).

I don't think I will ever understand the rich doing drugs , back when I was young and dumb I did some drugs (crack wasn't around back then) , but I did drugs more out of boredom than anything else . As a rich person I would be doing far too much traveling to be bored .

Try again jetjoky. The coroner didn't perform an autopsy on the still living husband. "Deputy coroner Shirley Radcliffe ruled that Rausing, who suffered from the heart condition tricuspid valve disease and had had a pacemaker fitted, had died from cocaine intoxication."

I had a girlfriend of 11 years who inherited a third of her fathers stuff when he died, it was around 10 million that she got. This is what she, and one of her sisters chose to do with the money. Between her, and her sister, it was around $100,000 a year habit. I left, and when I told her I was leaving for good, she just said "OK". They would stay locked in her bedroom days on end, I think her sister was headed for divorce too. I felt bad for her husband. I told him, "at least I don't have kids with her", that poor guy had his only child with her. He responded, "don't remind me".

Another enabled human being dies due to the horrible addiction to life destroying drugs.

And this is another lesson that more money does NOT always solve life's problems.

Myself, I choose to fault this man for allowing his wife to kill herself....he should have been HELPING her get OFF the drugs and NOT standing by as she killed herself with them.

Reality I completely agree. If you truly love someone you want them healthy, alive and with you for years.

I was so shy I would run; until I was 6 or so, jump in my mother's lap and hide my face so no one could see me. I made myself get out and talk to people when I became an older teen. I forced myself to be friendly, now people wish I was shy I'm sure. I love people.

Debora: I was also painfully shy as a boy.

Now I'm able to confront and have had to do so repeatedly.

I like to converse and to be involved but right now as the economy is so very hard in CONUS about anyone that wants to be "friends" is often really just looking for a new source of something other than friendship.

However, there's no reason NOT to be friendly and also open to communication as it can always be prevented from turning into a Q/A session IF someone is just out to see what they can get besides friendship/love.

        Reality,

Yes, we want to be very careful who we become friends with and how much we talk about concerning our private lives, and work life.

As a member of Stars and Stripes newspaper we learn yearly about the terrorists who seem like every day people but want to know all you know about certain things. Sometimes even those things seem innocent but they are not and at some point they can turn against America.

Thank God I don't know anything other than what is printed in the paper and that is public knowledge. Sometimes that is not a good thing either but it is called freedom of speach. (^_^)

I refuse to lock myself away and I cannot be used of God if I hide in my own little world so I have to listen to my heart as God leads me and be very careful what I say.

She was married to an Englishman, they were living in London and were heirs to a fortune generated by a company in Sweden. I seriously doubt the Bush tax cuts had squat to do with this. But congratulations for a monumentally stupid stretch of your limited imagination in bashing the Bush tax cuts--which are about to made permanent by Obama, BTW.

Which came first; he heart problems or the coke...sounds like suicide, not manslaughter, or would that be womanslaughter?

Jessica, you idiot, your stupidity is hanging out, dear. No you DO NOT smoke crack from aluminum foil. 99% of the time it is smoked in a glass or metal (OUCH!!!) tube stuffed with copper Choreboy as a filter. Powdered coke you smoke like you usually do heroin or opium; by holding a flame under the drug on a sheet of aluminum foil and sucking the smoke thru a straw. The class for drug abuse 101 is dismissed. Your home work for tonight is to see how much of a quarter ounce of coke you can smoke before you die. Enjoy, kiddies.

Just left her. That isn't love, even for a nutcase. That is fear of legal problems with the police because of the drugs. It is selfishness beyond reason. It is too bad that she had the bad luck to pair up with this weakling loser, no matter how deep his pockets were. Now his deep pockets will keep him from being treated like anyone else who acted in such a callous manner. People can act like such sh/ts. Now he has shown himself to be sh/ttier than most. I hope he has to jerk off the rest of his life because no woman will accept him after this. They can spell his name "Hands" on his gravestone instead of "Hans". But I'm sure he'll be able to find a woman who is as bad as he is.

This story has some very peculiar twists, but there is one aspect that baffles me.

Apart from the ghoulish behaviour of a husband living with a decomposing corpse, there is something else in this article that is very odd.

At the time of his wife's death (presumably in May), the husband covered the body with blankets and bedding, He then lived with the corpse for two months, until July, when the police found the body lying under layers of clothes and garbage bags.

                    Repeating the salients details:

In May the body was covered with blankets and bedding,

In July the body was covered with clothes and garbage bags,

If the inconsolable husband was so besotted with his beloved wife to the point of living with her corpse for two months, why then did he cover her with garbage?

Obviously, sanity is not the forte of the deranged, but the husband must have gone completely cuckoo in his crack-soaked head.

It's always about politics and President Obama...

I don't think Obamacare includes a dental plan.

No real news here. No real surprises, either. You have way too much money when all you have to do is sit around and get high between formal events and Caribbean trips on your huge yachts.

I must be in the wrong business. His father made $10 billion in packaging drinks? I guess you just have to be in the right place, at the right time, and have the right friends to get filthy rich. Look at Romney and how he got filthy rich with just a few years of work.

Yes, I'm envious and just don't understand how so many extremely rich people think they actually earned all their money, when often it is just a windfall from being in the right place...or having the right parents. I guess they are defensive because they have something to be defensive about.

And yes, I say have the ultra-rich pay more taxes, since the money they have that is above paying for daily needed expenses is mainly for buying mansions, jet planes, and not for needed items to live, unlike the rest of us. Plus, most/many rich people got rich on the backs of desperate people needing jobs and who still lead a hand to mouth existence.

Hans' father, Ruben Rausing *invented* the Tetra Pak in Sweden back in the 50's. It took him 10+ years to refine and perfect the product before bringing it to the market, and then another few years before it had its international break-through. Studied hard, worked hard - it had nothing to do with being in the right place or having the right parents :-)

And people are so mad that President Obama wants to raise taxes on the wealthy. The wealthy most likely got wealthy in illegal, immoral ways. Look how these people lived their lives. Gave money to rehab centers...really??? When? When they were LIVING there? I bet they never worked a DAY in their life. As someone else said, yea, I'm wrong because I actually SUPPORT America by working for a living. Maybe we should all stomp on people to get to the top so we can smoke crack....and yes, it was crack....and die disgracefully. What...a....waste! The World's economy is falling apart and this is how these idiots are spending their money? I don't think I have read a more disgusting article in awhile. I say tax the 1% until the government can't tax these overly entitled, overly privileged idiots anymore!

And the husband should be in jail awaiting a trial. Who does that? Lives with a dead spouse for TWO MONTHS. And it would have been longer if the cops hadn't followed him home after his sporadic driving. Also pathetic is the fact that NO ONE seemed to inquire about the hieress. Was she that unimportant that no one missed her for TWO MONTHS? I almost feel sorry for them. Almost. This story is gross.

Soooo...you're taking a story about two pathetic, self-entitled heirs to a fortune they had no part in making to extrapolate a blanket condemnation of all "rich" people? And you're doing it while ignoring the fact that the husband was English, they were living in London as English citizens, were heirs to a company founded in Sweden, and no part of their existence has squat to do with any part of America or our lives here? And you're doing this all while ignoring the billions of money given away philanthropically every year by our own super-rich, from Bill Gates to Warren Buffett? It's the old "soak the rich" mentality that is tearing this country apart--you're a perfect little soldier in Obama's "redistribution of wealth" socialist philosophy, aren't you? Of course, once you're done ripping up the very people who build our corporations and provide our jobs, good luck feeding your family. As pathetic as this story is, your comments are no more intelligent than their behavior.

Eva Rausing's family has said it believed she turned to drugs in her late teens to overcome acute shyness.

So instead of being shy, she's dead. Good trade off?
