And yet with 3000 dead Americans on our own soil the Bush Administration was given an 8 year reign as well, even though they hadn't even finished a single year in office. There aren't enough American troops to prevent anything from happening everywhere on the planet and had there been a larger force in Benghazi who knows if there wouldn't just have ended up being even more causualties. We don't know the size of the force that attacked and a consular building in a backwater town wouldn't be too difficult to overrun, it wasn't a fortress. The death of these people is regrettable, and all the screaming won't bring them back. Just hope that lessons are learned and applied in the future to minimize the potential of a repeat.

Sounds to me like Jeep is planning on opening a factory up in China, to build the Chinese Jeeps there instead of in the US. Point?

The point was that we were told that Jeep was moving American jobs to China to produce vehicles that would be sold here. Not that Jeep was expanding production in China for the Chinese market. Big difference, especially since Jeep has announced an expansion of production in America for the American market.

Oh come, come. Our political history is rife with examples of lies and distortions hurled by one candidate at another. This is nothing new, nor is this period really any worse than any other. Candidates have been accused of being drunkards and womanizers, etc., etc., and yet the Republic has survived. Really the only difference now is the ability of campaigns to wage a relentless assualt on our senses via advertising. At least we're past the notion of personal honor being so besmirched that a duel is required, or would you prefer we return to the days of Hamilton and Burr?

Would it be better if we could have rational, truthful discussions of the issues? Absolutely. But as they use to say "Homey don't play that way!".

Is that a good reason to just sweep it under the rug? The Jeep thing has a grain of truth; Jeep is planning on taking work out of the US to China, but at the same time is expanding their domestic work here, so no jobs will be lost (we hope). The Romney tax thing was an out and out lie. Not only was it simple character assassination, but it was unbelievable character assassination; except half of the country believed it, because of all the disinformation being thrown around. Reid should have been called to the carpet and been made to apologize publicly, as he publicly lied in front of congress.

Wow! Do you REALLY think that Jeep would have announced that they were moving US jobs to China? Really? Did it ever cross your mind to ask why they don't produce the Jeeps in the US for all markets? Once the operations in China are humming along, how long do you think it is that they EXPAND the chinese operations and reduce the US operations? Actually, Jeep is opening up in China for the Chinese markets, because it is too expensive to build them here and ship them over. It would still cost too much to build them there and then ship them here. Apparently, it is cheapest to build them in the continent you are selling them. Just FYI.

@Brent they were actually building the Jeeps to be shipped to China here. That's the point. That manufacturing is going to be done in China now, not here. However, Jeep is ramping up production here as well, so hopefully no jobs will be lost. It'd be better for our economy if they were doing *all* their production here, but, unfortunately, sending jobs overseas makes sense sometimes. Sucks for us tho.

1. Dazzling

At least a quarter of Americans still don’t know who Paul Ryan is, and only about half who know and have an opinion of him view him favorably.

So, Ryan’s primary job tonight was to introduce himself and make himself seem likeable, and he did that well. The personal parts of the speech were very personally delivered, especially the touching parts where Ryan talked about his father and mother and their roles in his life. And at the end of the speech, when Ryan cheered the crowd to its feet, he showed an energy and enthusiasm that’s what voters want in leaders and what Republicans have been desperately lacking in this campaign.

To anyone watching Ryan’s speech who hasn’t been paying much attention to the ins and outs and accusations of the campaign, I suspect Ryan came across as a smart, passionate and all-around nice guy — the sort of guy you can imagine having a friendly chat with while watching your kids play soccer together. And for a lot of voters, what matters isn’t what candidates have done or what they promise to do —it’s personality. On this measure, Mitt Romney has been catastrophically struggling and with his speech, Ryan humanized himself and presumably by extension, the top of the ticket.

2. Deceiving

On the other hand, to anyone paying the slightest bit of attention to facts, Ryan’s speech was an apparent attempt to set the world record for the greatest number of blatant lies and misrepresentations slipped into a single political speech. On this measure, while it was Romney who ran the Olympics, Ryan earned the gold.

The good news is that the Romney-Ryan campaign has likely created dozens of new jobs among the legions of additional fact checkers that media outlets are rushing to hire to sift through the mountain of cow dung that flowed from Ryan’s mouth. Said fact checkers have already condemned certain arguments that Ryan still irresponsibly repeated.

Fact: While Ryan tried to pin the downgrade of the United States’ credit rating on spending under President Obama, the credit rating was actually downgraded because Republicans threatened not to raise the debt ceiling.

Fact: While Ryan blamed President Obama for the shut down of a GM plant in Janesville, Wisconsin, the plant was actually closed under President George W. Bush. Ryan actually asked for federal spending to save the plant, while Romney has criticized the auto industry bailout that President Obama ultimately enacted to prevent other plants from closing.

Fact: Though Ryan insisted that President Obama wants to give all the credit for private sector success to government, that isn't what the president said. Period.

Fact: Though Paul Ryan accused President Obama of taking $716 billion out of Medicare, the fact is that that amount was savings in Medicare reimbursement rates (which, incidentally, save Medicare recipients out-of-pocket costs, too) and Ryan himself embraced these savings in his budget plan.

Elections should be about competing based on your record in the past and your vision for the future, not competing to see who can get away with the most lies and distortions without voters noticing or bother to care. Both parties should hold themselves to that standard. Republicans should be ashamed that there was even one misrepresentation in Ryan’s speech but sadly, there were many.

3. Distracting

And then there’s what Ryan didn’t talk about.

Ryan didn’t mention his extremist stance on banning all abortions with no exception for rape or incest, a stance that is out of touch with 75% of American voters.

Ryan didn’t mention his previous plan to hand over Social Security to Wall Street.

Ryan didn’t mention his numerous votes to raise spending and balloon the deficit when George W. Bush was president.

Ryan didn’t mention how his budget would eviscerate programs that help the poor and raise taxes on 95% of Americans in order to cut taxes for millionaires and billionaires even further and increase — yes, increase —the deficit.

These aspects of Ryan’s resume and ideology are sticky to say the least. He would have been wise to tackle them head on and try and explain them away in his first real introduction to voters. But instead of Ryan airing his own dirty laundry, Democrats will get the chance.

At the end of his speech, Ryan quoted his dad, who used to say to him, “"Son. You have a choice: You can be part of the problem, or you can be part of the solution."

Ryan may have helped solve some of the likeability problems facing Romney, but ultimately by trying to deceive voters about basic facts and trying to distract voters from his own record, Ryan’s speech caused a much larger problem for himself and his running mate.

If the school needs security against people with guns, then maybe the NRA should foot the bill for it. More guns is not the answer. More guns will cost more lives, not save them. Let's share a scenario. Pick a Starbuck's location, imagine it being close to fullcapacity, when a guy walks in and attempts to use a gun to rob the place (meaning the establishment and the patrons). Now, there also happen to be 2 patrons (not sharing the same table) that are "carrying" and they open fire on the robber, so a shoot out begins. Now, we get a cop who heard the gunfire and has run over to investigate. Who does he shoot first? Does he shout "POLICE" and hope they stop shooting? Does he just sit there and call and wait for back up? In the meantime, how many bystanders die due to being in the wrong place at the wrong time? A society of vigilantes is not going to make us safer. Too many misperceptions can be had.

I agree, but this isn't a left-right thing; this is a whole culture thing. We live in a 'no one's to blame, we're all victims here' society. I also think Hillary should resign. I think Rice should resign. I think that the country needs a good explanation as to why the government waffled about this for two weeks after it happened, and changed their story multiple times. To me it was expedient political lying during the election season, nothing more, nothing less. But nothing will happen. No one will be held accountable.

"Shayneedward" here it the reality. This was a preventable incident AFTER the fact. Meaning that the problems were identified only AFTER the attack occurred. It is not up to EITHER Hillary Clinton or Ambassador Rice to identify "systemic failures". From a business management perspective and make no mistake about it, the United States government is a business, Clinton and Rice are
CEO level. It was up to mid-managers to identify any security problems and if they thought they were
serious enough, get action taken on them. This did not occur.

This was not a coverup, they did not "change their stories multiple times" and this was not "expedient political lying during the election season". It was instead problems that were not identifed until after the fact. Happens all the time in both the public and private sectors.

Progressive, you are ignoring the multiple attacks on the Benghazi compound over the past year, as well as the multiple times our Ambassador asked for more security before the fatal attack, the last of which was the morning of the fatal attack. You are also ignoring the time line, what the government said, and pretty much all the facts that were brought out by several different news sources, not just Fox. You can say that your fantasy is reality all you want, but it doesn't change what really happened. All you are doing is maintaining the big lie. Unfortunately, that is a propaganda strategy that works, and has been used by this administration an awful lot in the past few years.

Shayneedward: You ignore the fact that Libya wouldn't allow marine guards at Benghazi only the Embassy itself. That the Libyan government provided security along with some private contractors. You also ignore the fact that the request made that morning was never sent and were requests made to the Libyan government not ours. Stevens went to Benghazi knowing it was the 9-11 anniversary and knowing marines couldn't accompany him there.

Charger, you want to make it as if it has to be exactly the same circumstances as it happened in Benghazi? Really? I can go all the way back to Reagan, being asked for help from Lebanon and yet none was provided and many more than 4 people died, because of a terrorist attack. Maybe what you don't understand is there are protocols for an embassy in a foreign country. I guess the fact that the host country (Libya) didn't have very good troops for security as they fled at the first sign of trouble. Some marines had been flown to Benghazi, but couldn't get out of the airport due to local officials holding them up. There are plenty of instances where admininstrations were "warned" that some sort of attack was eminent, but rarely has anything been done . Also realize that Amb. Rice was given the unclassified talking points to run with, eventhough she had read the classified report. However, she was not authorized to give out classified information. So, you and your ilk seem to think she should have broken the law just to keep you informed? Not very realistic. Did you have this kind of cioniption fit over the original 9-11, when we had plenty of warnings, that were ignored, and tehn the other Ms. Rice, sadi "who would have thought they were going to use planes?", when there was clear evidence available,saying just that. You have been cherry picking your facts, just to make the current admin look bad. I don't have the timwe to list all of the terrorist acts that were committed against us in the last 20 years, but they happen, and inevitably, nobody is held accountable. Get over it.

The day the bodies were returned home caused my guts to clench. Listening to the smarmy lying by Clinton while Obama listened turned my stomach. These guys (the 4 killed in Libya) died for their beliefs, and so that we could maintain our beliefs. But they died because *the current administration* would not send additional security that our Ambassador requested. And the current administration lied to cover their own butts, in front of the bodies of the people they condemned, and in front of the whole country. I would never support Hillary for president.

And there was a drone recording what was happening, phone calls during the attack, and the CIA saying later that day (or the next day) that it was a militant group that attacked, not a demonstration where people happened to bring RPGs and mortars. The government knew what was happening. They chose to lie during the election to make Pres Obama's foreign policy record look better. That's obvious. Again you display an ideological head in the sand over this issue.

And tell us again why no one can question the survivors of the attack. Could it be Mr. and Mrs. Transparency don't want the real truth out!
