Subscribe to RSSThe U.S. military is in damage-control mode after a video surfaced of Marines urinating on the dead bodies of Taliban fighters in Afghanistan. NBC's Jim Miklaszewski reports.
WASHINGTON — A U.S. Marine staff sergeant who urinated on dead Taliban insurgents and posed for photographs with the bodies has pleaded guilty to two charges in a military court, the Marine Corps said on Thursday.
His sentence was a reduction in rank and forfeiture of $500 in pay.
Staff Sergeant Joseph Chamblin pleaded guilty at a special court martial at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, to dereliction of duty for failing to properly supervise junior Marines. He also pleaded guilty to wrongfully urinating on a deceased enemy combatant.
The incident occurred during a counter-insurgency operation in Helmand Province in Afghanistan in July 2011. It came to light in January this year when a videotape of the incident was posted on YouTube and other websites.
The video showed four men in camouflage Marine combat uniforms urinating on three corpses. One of them joked, "Have a nice day, buddy," while another made a lewd joke.

The video was one of a series of offensive incidents involving U.S. service members that roused Afghan ire and led to heightened tensions between Washington and Kabul earlier this year.
Afghan President Hamid Karzai condemned the actions in the video as "inhuman" and Defense Secretary Leon Panetta telephoned him to denounce the incident as "deplorable" and promise an investigation.
An investigation has been launched after video emerged that military authorities say appears to show U.S. Marines urinating on dead Taliban terrorists in Afghanistan. NBC's Jim Miklaszewski reports.
Chamblin was charged with failing to properly supervise junior Marines, failing to require junior Marines to wear protective equipment, failing to report the misconduct of junior Marines, failing to report the negligent discharge of a grenade launcher, and failing to stop the indiscriminate firing of weapons, the Marine Corps said in a statement.
Chamblin waived his right to a jury and pleaded guilty to two counts before a military judge, the statement said. The judge levied a penalty that including 30 days in jail and a $2,000 fine, but because of a pretrial agreement Chamblin received a lesser sentence.

The maximum penalty under the agreement was a reduction in rank to sergeant and a forfeiture of $500 in pay for one month, the statement said.
The Marine Corps declined to release details about the evidence or the findings of the investigation because, it said, cases were still pending related to the urination video incident.

well if you feel its OK for our soldiers to piss on dead enemies, don't go crying when you see images of our enemies pissing on our dead troops.
They don't piss on our dead troops, they drag them through the streets. They dismember them. They drill holes into them with power tools.
We tinkle on them....and probably make them smell better in the process.
They should get hall passes to take a deuce on them if they want. The sentance is for filming it and you should know better, carry on boys.

I recall all too well how the enemy treats our dead and wounded.Anyone here recall Somalia?1993? operation restore hope?I will never forget it as long as i live.Nothing teaches you to hate faster than seeing the dead bodies of Americans being stripped,Multilated and dragged through the streets of Mogadishu.I know hate is a strong word but,These were men that were in the same unit as me.We went through the same training,The same mess halls, and the same operations briefing.We all fought that day ,and 18 of us did'nt make it back.My regrets are simple.I wish we could have saved the men we lost or at least have been allowed some payback.( instead of wishy washy politicians)I regret not having the chance to kill the S.O.B's that did what they did to my friends.

Ted mailed it. They kill our soldiers, drag them by a rope around their necks tied to a bumper through the towns while people cheer and smack their bodies with boards and rocks etc...
Then they hang them from a crane or bridge for days on end all the while shooting the corps riddling 'em with holes completely mutilating their bodies.
We piss on them and get demoted & fined. Hell, we even have the heart to bury them (enemy) within 24hrs when dead as per their religious beliefs. That's what we did with Bin Laden out of respect for their beliefs even though we put one right between his eyes from 20 feet.
Sgt. Chamblin most likely seen this first hand. How are you supposed to react when you see your comrades being mutilated? Being killed is something that's always possible and they're ready for however, mutilation of their bodies crosses the line.
Suddenly, I have to take a piss. Be back in about a week. The flight over there and back takes awhile.

But, in case you haven't noticed, our enemy in this war grabs innocents and tortures (real torture, not the phony stuff that the media likes to think the US does) them in public, beheads them in public, drags them through the streets behind vehicles, alive or dead, etc. Plus, our men and women wear uniforms to identify themselves as members of the US military. Our enemy dresses up as citizens, women and clerics. So, if pissing on the enemy let's them let off a little steam, then so what? i used to be a grocery worker and under the terms of my hire could have been fired for eating something that was expired because it was 'stealing from the company'... so in that respect... why are we allowing our troops to shoot ammunition 'just cuz'
i'm not claiming that this is going to balance the budget or anything..but it sure would help stop the money hemorrhaging problem we have.. i don't know how you would enforce it though... as long as our ranking officers think it's ok to pee on a dead body... i can't imagine they'd have a problem with a little useless gunfire

If it teaches Americans to hate when our troop's bodies are desecrated, it teaches them to hate us when it happens to theirs. We are not fighting a country, we are fighting terrorists. Hate is their recruiting tool. These soldiers essentially created a recruiting poster for the Taliban.

Lance Cpl. Justin Kyle Lewter of Murfreesboro was killed in a crash in his personal car at Camp Pendleton, California, where he was stationed, last week.

USMC Lance Cpl. Justin Kyle Lewter died in the crash of his POV on base in California way back in 2009. Yes, it was very unfortunate but it happens throughout the DOD more often than most folks realize. I agree with what was said earlier in this thread, Sergeant Joseph Chamblin was only demoted and fined because some idiot recorded it and posted it on line. It got the panties of all those liberal politicians in Washington wadded up tightly in their crotches. I said 7.62mm by 51mm on post 2.3 because it looks like one of the Marines was holding a M40 or some variation of it. I know some of the other trigger pullers had M16/M4's just as well you work with what you got and make do!

I think that urinating on dead soldiers is a sign of disrespect not only to the dead, but to the people that the person urinating represents.
When a country like USA goes and occupies another country under the guise of freedom it is in the USA's best interest to prove that it has morally sound intentions. Allowing soldiers to urinate on dead bodies with little reprimand does not help that.
These Soldiers pledge their lives to serve Our Country. Their LIVES and you have the gall to talk about respect. Put your life out there and walk their walk! Fight their fights! Sleep and live in the conditions they live in! Eat what they eat! Deal with the weather conditions they deal with! Watch your buddies die like they do! Witness women and children get mutilated like they do! Come home and try to live with ignorant, ungrateful pukes like they do! Try to get a job to support your family and heal and function after seeing and doing what they HAD to do!
Okay, his military career is stalled at Sgt and he will never rise above Sgt again, but if a civilian did this to another civilian, they would have been charged with battery and would have gotten either some jail time or probation. When he leaves the marines, he will probably get an honorable discharge, unless he does something stupid again. Then, when he applies for jobs, this will never come up, unless he applies for a government job. All he has to tell future employers is that he was honorably discharged, not that he discharged his pee on a dead body. Unlike the civilian, who will have to disclosed that they have a criminal record and went to jail or probation for peeing on someone. I think it's about time the military and civilian justice system become the same in regards to punishments.
Blood, if he were interviewng w/me, and his action was made known to me, I'd shake his hand, hire him on the spot, and for more money than I would otherwise have paid for the position.
This is about a soldier in a combat situation,not about some freaked out civilian who went out and chose a victim to kill and pee on.As a soldier myself of way over 20 years, i would chew his butt for being stupid, but i would also rip him for being dumb enough to take pictures of it.After all was said and done i would post orders forbidding personal cameras on patrol.Granted,I am biased but then again so is the Taliban.What they do to our soldiers is far worse.

The Muslims have dragged the burned bodies of our troops through the streets forever.
It was alright for the enemy to sodomize the ambassador in Benghazi. It was alright for them to drag bodies through the streets. It is alright for the Taliban to pour gasoline on people a set them on fire yet urinating on the dead is an issue? I have seen us leave bodies and pieces of bodies at Kalagush where the dogs take away the body parts and have a feast. There is video of this around. We never buried them as we left them to rot out there. No one complained how we let the bodies be treated. We could have buried them or burned them but did not. These REMFs are the problem and not our soldiers.

This, defacing the defeated (dead or alive) is something that has been going on since the first stone was thrown at another person to keep territory, the farm, whatever. Read the Old Teswtament if you want to know about attrocities perpatrated on captured and wounded. Unfortunately, this is one that was caught. The same thing happened to Lt. Calley and Capt. Medina,following orders from their commanding officer, in my war, Vietnam. They killed people under orders. I did the same thing, but since my job was a kinda kill 'em all, let god sort 'em out, I never got caught nor was I prosecuted.
I dislike the idea of embedded press. They get in the way and if they get wounded or their feelings hurt or whatever, they bitch and moan like no one's business. I say don't let soldiers take cell phones with them, with the exception of the person in command and then only to a frequency to headquarters. No one has any business knowing the place or what happened, with the exception of documenting dead and damages, along with collateral damages on any mission.

You can't call Bush a liar if you're not going to call Clinton a liar. Clinton bombed Iraq in 1998 because he, Sandy Berger, Nancy Pelosi and Madline Albright said Saddam had WMDs. No one with a brain cell thought Saddam's weapons were completely destroyed by that little Clinton distraction. It would be pretty hard to explain the subsequent 1441 resolution from the UN otherwise.
Despite the left's woeful selective memory and desire to rewrite history, you can't say Clinton was telling the truth about WMDs in 1998 yet Bush was lying in 2001 and 2002. And you can't ignore the fact that Saddam used all kinds of nasty stuff (you know, the stuff that didn't exist) against Iran and his own people for many years.
@ Lostinthepines & Jax There were no WMD's used by Iraq after 1988. By 2003 when we invaded there was nothing left that hadn't been destroyed in 1991 during the Gulf War. Speculate all you want but I have a family memeber that was there for the Navy in 1991 and 2003 and tasked with finding that stuff and all they came up with was left over delivery systems that were useless. We went into Iraq based on a lie and no amount of trying to rewrite history will change that.

What you're not understanding Lost, is that we as military are held to a higher standard, not like the standards our enemies use. I'm on my 3rd tour to AFG, as well as doing one in Iraq, and I stress to my troops not to do anything that SSG Bales or any other "shamed" US military personnel did or I would personally make sure they would be home on the next plane and court martialed. Our military has better troops than these Marine thugs. As a CMSgt/E-9 in the Air Force, I would have personally saw him to jail after his conviction. Marine brass is a joke and should be ashamed for their pathetic verdict. There are many Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines who serve more honorably and under extreme conditions like these Marines and didn't do such heinous acts.

This punishment is a joke!! As a CMSgt/E-9 in the Air Force and presently serving in AFG, the Marine leadership failed! If any Air Force person did this, I would have recommended a DD (Dishonable Discharge), reduction in rank (at the least) and a fine bigger than $500. There is no excuse for this type of so-called leadership from an NCO. Marine leadership, shame on you! You lost your ba**s in making this decision.
