Syria activists: Several die after Assad's forces use 'poisonous gases'

CAIRO -- Several Syrians have died after inhaling poisonous gas released by government forces in rebel-held districts of Homs, local eyewitnesses and activists claimed Monday.

Civilians were admitted to hospital with serious breathing problems after Sunday’s attack, according to doctors and groups who posted what they said was video of the aftermath to YouTube.

The gas is thought to have been a concentrated irritant, but not one of the deadly chemical weapons stockpiled by the regime of Syria president Bashar Assad.

Claims by either side in Syria’s bitter civil war are almost impossible to independently verify because journalists are rarely allowed access to the country.

Pesticide poisoning?
Mousab Azzawi, chairman of the London-based Syrian Network for Human Rights and a doctor, told NBC News that his organization had received reports from three eyewitnesses on Sunday.

He said field doctors in Homs were seeing patients “losing consciousness, experiencing severe shortness of breath and vomiting.”

“To our understanding, this is similar to poisoning with pesticide,” he said, although he was not aware of any pesticide that could take the form of a gas.

Airstrike kills dozens of Syrians trying to buy bread, activists say

Azzawi added that they were “very concerned and deeply worried” that the attack might be a sign that Assad’s regime might use chemical weapons “on a very small scale.”

Walid Fares, spokesman for the Homs Revolutionary Council -- part of the National Coalition for Syrian Revolutionary and Opposition Forces, the umbrella organization recognized by more than 100 countries including the United States -- issued a statement to NBC News on Monday.

It said “poisonous gases” came from shells fired by government tanks in the districts of Al Bayada and Al Khalideya.

In Syria's Aleppo, 'We're starving. I can bear it but what about my children?'

“The shells did not explode but rather emitted a cloud of white smoke and it landed in residential areas… where revolutionaries had gathered and which led to tens being injured,” the statement said.

It said symptoms included “complete absence of vision” as well as nausea, lost consciousness and severe breathing difficulty.

“The initial analysis of the doctors in the hospital confirmed that it is a poisonous gas that contains banned substances,” the statement added, citing videos that claimed to show patients being treated.

'This isn't the first time'
It said there were seven deaths as of early Monday - naming six of the victims - and close to 50 injured.

A third group, the Local Coordination Committees - a network of local opposition councils across Syria - told NBC News: "The LCC has not yet confirmed what the substance was, but doctors in Homs are confirming the use of toxic gases. This isn't the first time; residents of Homs and Zabadani were reporting the use (confirmed) of white phosphorus months ago.”

Two YouTube videos showed patients being treated in hospital for the symptoms of a gas attack. In one, a doctor says in Arabic that the gas is “definitely not Sarin” but is “definitely” poisonous.

US officials: Syria loads chemical weapons into bombs; military awaits Assad's order

Earlier this month, President Barack Obama warned Assad that the use of chemical weapons by his regime would be "totally unacceptable." "If you make the tragic mistake of using these weapons there will be consequences and you will be held accountable," he said.

The alleged gas attack came hours after a senior Israeli defense official said he believed Syria's chemical weapons were still secure despite the civil war.

Amos Gilad told Army Radio that the both sides had become deadlocked but there was no sign of Assad heeding international calls to step down, according to a Reuters report.

"Suppose he does leave, there could be chaos ... in the Middle East you never know who will come instead. We need to stay level-headed; the entire world is dealing with this. At the moment, chemical weapons are under control," Gilad said.

Reuters contributed to this report.

Which is exactly the reason for why we do not need to be involved.

The media and such is already building up a case as to why we should go in there. Use of chemical weapons on a "very small scale"?! That is utterly rediculous! So you are going to tell me that they are going to set off chemical bombs to kill 2 or 3 people at a time? That doesnt make any sense when they have regular bombs that kill many people at once and dont "enrage" the international community.

One final thing to think about though. A bomb is a bomb is a bomb and killing someone is still killing them. Why is the use of chemical weapons so looked down upon? You have a choice of being hit with shrapnel and flame and then possibly waiting to bleed out painfully - or - you have a choice of suffocating to death due to chemicals(among other things). Now tell me what the big difference is. There shouldnt be killing period, but I think its rediculous to demonize one weapon over another when they both achieve the same result of dead people.
Somehow I can eventually see the politically correct people stating that certain death tolls for weapons as being acceptable or not. So basically, you wont face sanctions as long as your bomb doesnt kill more than 'this' number of people at a time. Isnt there something wrong with all of this?

If China sucks us into a shooting war we are going to need those guns after the nukes fly.. Maybe our master in the White House will EMP us and blame it on them and kill 2 birds with one stone.. Indeed, every report that I have seen prior to this one indicated that it was the REBELS using the chemical weapons - funny that now that the story has been picked up by the MSM it's been turned around...

Given that anything coming out of Syria is suspect right now, I doubt you have any proof to back that up.

1. Because the man in power over there is dictator that targets children and non combant women intentionally. I guess we only care when evil men over here kill children right?

2. We got involved with other dictator there recently and destroyed them.

3.Can't argue with you on that one Bush lied as did his dad before him. Want example look at desert storm veterans many being cheated of justice while some are given benefit of the doubt and turn their backs on fellow vets.

4. Hopefully by showing the people of Syria that we care about them when war crimes are committed it will ensure they remain peaceful to Americans remebering the help they were given. Just like in Libya we don't need ground troops in this war. Did Biden say Obama would be tested and they will find out he is man of Iron? Personally I think Obama is afraid of big bad Russia there and can't work a diplomatic deal with Russia and China to get rid of the human monster that Assad has been shown to be.

Reply to Chris why are chemical weapons banned? They are considered very broad WMD's they do not have the targeting characteristics of guns or rockets or missiles. They posion the area they are used in for very long lengths of time, similar to Depleted Uranium btw, gas is not very acurate weapon but it requires protective gear to have chance against it. You cannot hide from gas in building, civilans dont typical have way to escape it once it is deployed. You often do not even know what is happening till you see people starting to drop from the effects. The nations of the world consider it to be vile and evil weapon due to it kills everything enemy friendlys alike if they are caught in the cloud with no protective gear and masks, cannot see it, hard to protect against , it can poison the environment and more. What gives people the right to fight each other with chemical weapons and kill civlians in the cross fire? Gas is banned weapon and should stay banned. What alot people don't know tear gas can be deadly in some individuals but it considered ok by police departments.

Just because the Rebels (activist, terrorist) "claim" a Gas Attack, does not mean it actually happened. They are fighting a loosing battle and will say anything to win. I don't trust the U.N. to investigate the claim because they are more corrupt than the Rebels (activist, terrorist).

Patriotic American -- why don't you go to Syria and get rid of Assad? His replacement will be Islamic Terrorist who will then use the Syrian weapons to attack women and children who are "non-believers". With Assad, we know what we have but the Rebels will give us more Islamic Terrorist. Syria will become another Egypt and the U.S. should stay away from any intervention is Syria. The Rebels (activist, terrorist) started the Civil War. Now it is time for them to either die or give-up without any support from any NATO or Western Power. Remember, O'Bama just gave just gave Turkey Patriot missile and 400 U.S. Troops. Thurkey, although a NATO country, is not exactly a friend of the U.S..

Hello folks, the fact of the matter is that we are arming the people we will eventually get into a future conflict with. The consortium of rebels which include Al Qaeda is now been given "moral", political and financial cover and support by the U.S. and Europe all the while these same groups are all on the U.S. terrorist watch list.

Folks if you can't see that we are continually lied to to promote the interests of the Oil, Banking and Corporate cartels I don't know what will convince you. Without the Federal Reserve, petrodollar, wars and weapons manufacturers our economy would be completely ravaged by hyperinflation. None of these things are anything to be proud of, this means our empire is collapsing.

Because with a regular bomb, when it lands, it blows up and kills people in and around the impact. Then it's over. One big boom then you're picking up pieces of people. With chemical weapons, they land, kill the people in the area and then who knows where that cloud is going to go. Over the border into Turkey? South into Lebanon? There is no controlling where it goes. It's the gift that keeps on giving.

Also with conventional bombs, it blows up, kills a few dozen people. The poison gases used in Halabja on the Kurds in 1988 killed almost 5,000 people and injured almost 10,000. They are considered Weapons of Mass Destruction for a reason.

i am REALLY amazed at how gullible people are becoming.

did you guys forget about the vid posted by the syrian REBELS gassing a couple of rabbits? this tells me the rebels ( im not for or against assad or the FSA, just easier to differentiate between the 2 by saying rebels) have possesion of chemical weapons components or chemicals which can have a similar effect that are not classified as weapons.

when saddam unleashed a gas attack on the kurds, the attack didnt kill just 3 or 4 people and it wasnt a very small scale use- 3000-5000 dead and another 7000-10000 injured. he sprayed the entire town, not just one little area.

the idea behind chemical weapons is to eradicate large numbers of opposition forces, and as an area denial weapon.

why on earth would assad use CW on such a very small scale when he has been repeatedly warned that such actions will result in outside intervention? it makes no sense at all, if a person was going to do such and knows what the response will be, that would logically conclude that if they are going to be used, use them in the most effective manner possible. in the case of Syria that would mean large scale spraying of rebel strong holds - not a small scale attack in small neighborhoods.

also consider that syrian rebels have recently gained control of a chemical plant in aleppo that manufactured chlorine gas. chlorine gas was the first chemical weapon used in warfare durring WWI. there is also one of the Syrian army's CW depots located just a few miles away.

put the pieces of the puzzle together and you have about as clear cut case as you can get of whats known as a "false flag attack"

the rebels knowing the west will repond over the use of chemical weapons have staged a small scale "attack" against thier own people in order to draw the west into the conflict.

it's called propoganda folks. ALWAYS question what you hear in the news, never take anything at face value that you see on TV or online. if you take the time to think and maybe even do a little investigating you will see propoganda stick out like a sore thumb every time.

dont be a sheep- learn to think.

Lest we forget....

THE NEWS that President Barack Obama has formally recognised Syria's main opposition coalition as "the legitimate representative" of the Syrian people has been met with concern that the conflict will escalate.

Read more: http://www.theweek.co.uk/us/syria-uprising/50572/obama-backs-syrian-rebels-so-why-are-they-frustrated#ixzz2G1tGLlxV

WASHINGTON -- President Barack Obama declared Syria's main opposition group the sole "legitimate representative" of its country's people Tuesday, deeming the move "a big step" in the international diplomatic efforts to end Syrian President Bashar Assad's embattled regime.

Obama said the newly formed Syrian Opposition Council "is now inclusive enough" to be granted the elevated status, which paves the way for the greater U.S. support for the organization.

"Obviously, with that recognition comes responsibilities," Obama said in an interview Tuesday with ABC News. "To make sure that they organize themselves effectively, that they are representative of all the parties, that they commit themselves to a political transition that respects women's rights and minority rights."

    #1.37 - Mon Dec 24, 2012 10:48 PM EST

I am not buying this. With all the rhetoric from Obama and others about what would happen if Assad used chemical weapons, I would not be surprised if this was all BS or if the rebels themselves are responsible for the chemical weapon used. The effects being described do not sound like those that would be expected from Assad using the chemical weapons in his stockpile. This sounds more like some rebel mixed up some home made concoction in order to try and claim that Assad was using chemical weapons. This seems like just one more attempt by the rebels to bring the international community into the fight on their side. The problem is that most of these rebels are not rebels at all, they are Islamic terrorists. They do not want a free and open society in Syria, they simply want control for themselves. Then they could institute their version of an Islamic republic ruled by their interpretation of Sharia law. I hope that Obama is not dumb enough to fall for this and get the US involved in the mess in Syria. Obama's naivety and poor foreign policy decisions have resulted in one country after another in the Middle east and North Africa falling under the control of the Islamists. They are going from countries that were ruled by secular dictators, who were largely benign, to countries ruled by Islamists as Islamic republics. The only people that these secular dictators really "oppressed" were the Islamist fanatics that we now see taking control. They did this because they, unlike Obama, recognized the threat that these Islamists represented and were willing to do what they needed to do in order to keep them under control. Mubarak recognized the danger represented by the Muslim Brotherhood so he banned them. Obama turns around and supports them, falling for their line of garbage that they were moderates. As we are seeing very clearly by what is going on in Egypt, nothing could be further from the truth. Now that they are in control they are showing their true colors, and things are only going to get worse. Now Obama wants to help the MB take control in Syria. The reality is that most of the so-called rebels in Syria are being backed by the MB and if these rebels are successful we will see Syria as yet another Islamic republic under the control of the MB. As far as I am concerned, this is definitely not an improvement over Assad, who for all his faults has lead a largely secular government.

"Mousab Azzawi, chairman of the London-based Syrian Network for Human Rights and a doctor, told NBC News that his organization had received reports from three eyewitnesses on Sunday."

What "human rights" do these fronts for Saudi versions of seventh century Sunni hating and killing Islamic Nazis know?

What are those fronts for Sunni Islamic beasts doing in Britain?

When these one-way traffic Islamic religious Nazis got opportunity, they used all methods to kill infidels including those of minority sects/tribes.

British are trying to be smart by encouraging such Islamic religious Nazis to work for the Sunni Islamic Nazi beasts.

Have they not learnt lessons from Iraqi wars, Afghan war, Libyan interventions and other places?

What is the big deal about gas?

Let the Sunni Islamic religious Nazis like Syrian rebels and their supporters go to hell. They are assured of 72 virgins.

See how these Sunni Islamists can imagine fantasies.

There was rebellion of Shiites against the despotic and highly corrupt Sunni ruler of Bahrain.

Brave Sunni rulers of Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwaiti, UAE and other Arab League nations sent their forces and just quelled the Shiites rebellion in no time.

All of a sudden, these seventh century fountainheads of Sunni Islamic haters and killers, remembered “human rights violations” in Syria.

So the Sunni rulers of Arab League sent “human rights” group to Syria.

The head of the Saudi and their Arab League observers to Syria was a Sudanese Gen. The brave Gen was responsible for the genocides of at least 300000 Christians in Darfur!

Still House of Saud ruler and his 5000 princes and princesses and other Sunni rulers seventh century desert dances did not work.

Later they outsourced their dirty work to Turkey.

You see: Turkey is a strategic NATO ally and too much of Turkey’s seventh century Islamist Erdogan’s dances mean US, Britain and other NATO forces members have to pitch in.

What a way to outsource their dirty jobs to NATO forces just like Iraqi wars to save Kuwaiti, Saudi and other “oil rich” rulers!!!

Also, the majority of the rebels in Syria aren't terrorists. They are mostly people who are a victim of a government that wrongs them to the point of genocide. THAT IS KIND OF WHY THERE IS A REBELLION IN THE FIRST PLACE!!!! Yes, it came out that a small section was likely a terrorist organization trying to hijack the movement. But most of them are NOT terrorists! And you people are calling for Assad to slaughter them all just because a small group was terrorists? If that's what you think, than you're no better than Assad or the terrorists.

They literally couldn't give a @!$%# if their rhetoric was true or made up, as long as they sound witty. The cons on here are literally waiting with baited breathe for the moment Obama uses force in Syria. Then they'll immediately flip 180 degrees and start screaming for his blood for doing so.

Obama made the same mistake endorsing the Muslim Brotherhood led rebels in Egypt, who ousted Mubarek! Now they are repudiating democracy and trying to create a country that will live under strict sharia law! Nice job Barry... please don't do the same in Syria!

For the record, Syria has been a leading country in state sponsored terrorism under... Assad! That's right, THE CURRENT REGIME YOU ALL ARE CHEERING ON TO GAS THEIR OWN PEOPLE ARE THE ONES WHO SUPPORT AND SPONSOR AS HIGH LEVELS OF TERRORISM AS ANYWHERE ON THE PLANET!!!! It is a well known fact that there were/are many terrorist training camps in Syria sponsored by this current "government that likes to commit genocide on their own people.

Wake up people! How did the rebels, the victims of this so called "government" of sorts, become the terrorists in this situation? And just what do you think using poison gas against your own people is? That's right, terrorism. You all freak out because of reports that a terrorist organization has infiltrated the movement. And I believe those reports, because it sounds like something they would do. But you don't see me freaking out about the rebels. And that's because most of the rebels are NOT terrorists. If you actually read the reports that information came in, you might remember it was only a single group out of many that were legitimate a terrorist organization. The US government has already said that while they recognize the rebels, they do not recognize that group as they are terrorists. So we won't let that group take over, and even if they did we wouldn't allow it. The rest are just people rebelling against one of the most brutal and oppressive regime's on earth.

Now I know that many of you are looking at Egypt's situation, and don't want the current "government" in Syria to be replaced by anyone even worse. I understand those fears but... Well, that isn't likely in Syria. Allow me to explain why Syria is different from countries like Egypt.

The differences in Syria from Egypt:

    1. Syria's current "government" is far worse than Mubarak's regime was for everyone in every way save the terrorists they sponsor. So in order to replace them with something worse, you would have to find a replacement regime that much lower than what replaced Mubarak. Syria's "government" just starts out that much worse.

    2. In Egypt, most of the army prevented Mubarak and his supporters from slaughtering the people because the majority of the army refused to kill them. However, Syria often slaughtered their own people years before this revolution even began. Again, this current Syrian "government" the rebels are revolting against does this.

    3. They already support terrorism. That's right, this current regime has been involved in as much state sponsored terrorism as anywhere else.

    4. You could not have a worse government save Al Qaeda themselves running Syria. But again, many terrorist organization are already supported by Syria. So it wouldn't be much worse even if Al Qaeda or the Taliban took them over. I know that's very hard to believe. But what do you expect from a government that has a long history of slaughtering their own people and supporting terrorism?

    5. Even the Muslim Brotherhood, as shady as they are, would be an improvement over Syria's current government. That's not about how good Egypt's situation and government are because they are a mess. That only speaks to how bad Syria's situation and government are.

WAKE UP PEOPLE! Supporting the current regime in Syria IS supporting terrorists!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I don't know how our public became so misinformed to think the rebels were the terrorists. Most of the rebels aren't. Syria's current regime is.

Hello folks, when will we discard our Imperialistic mindset? This is just another ploy by the U.S. and the U.N. to perpetrate the war mongering and demonizing as the U.S. is trying to drum up more support for another war. We’ve caused enough trouble around the world. If you can't see that we are the instigators in most of the world's wars and displacement of millions of people who are fleeing our aggression, than you are not paying attention. If you don’t think we have been in Syria covertly arming the rebels you are in denial and forgetting about Libya. We need to stay out of other country’s civil disputes. I hope we aren’t going to go against the United Nations vote earlier this year and unilaterally go into Syria under the pretext that we need to stop the violence like we did in Libya. General Wesley Clark has stated that a Syria invasion has been pre-planned for quite awhile.

General Wesley Clark: "America will take out 7 countries in 5 years"

According to Former NATO supreme allied commander, former presidential candidate and 4 star US General Wesley Clark that they had received a memo that America is going to take out 7 countries in the Middle East starting with Iraq, Libya, Syria Lebanon Sudan, Somalia, and finally Iran. It is amazing how these things that were planned years ago and even though it is taking longer than originally planned, are being achieved in front of our eyes.

Why is it other countries feel like they have to defend their territory? Could it be that they know we have no problem invading their sovereignty just as we have done to countless other countries. Since World War II, 90% of the casualties of war are unarmed civilians. 1/3 of them children. Our victims have done nothing to us. From Palestine to Afghanistan to Iraq to Somalia to wherever our next target may be, their murders are not collateral damage, they are the nature of modern warfare. They don't hate us because of our freedoms. They hate us because every day we are funding and committing crimes against humanity. The so-called "war on terror" is a cover for our military aggression to gain control of the resources of western Asia.

This is sending the poor of this country to kill the poor of those Muslim countries. This is trading blood for oil. This is genocide, and to most of the world, we are the terrorists. In these times, remaining silent on our responsibility to the world and its future is criminal. And in light of our complicity in the supreme crimes against humanity in Iraq and Afghanistan, and ongoing violations of the U.N. Charter in International Law, how dare any American criticize the actions of legitimate resistance to illegal occupation.

We are going into Syria for a couple of reasons (yes we are in Syria with our Drones at a minimum), one, we are trying to dislodge Russia from there because they have a foothold in the Middle East via two military bases in Latakia and Tartus in Syria. Two, Syria is a strong ally of Iran. If we invade Syria we take out a strong ally and maybe incite Iran to assist giving the U.S. the reason they are looking for to attack Iran. The ultimate goal is to surround, weaken and to invade Iran. The petro dollar is at stake as other countries are switching to other forms of currency in buying Iran’s oil.

Since the Russian war in 1828, Iran has never attacked another country. We on the other hand have attacked to name a few:
Libya, Iran, Nicaragua, Haiti, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Angola, Mozambique, Honduras, Chile, Congo, Yugoslavia, Afghanistan, Iraq, Lebanon, Somalia, Angola, Columbia, Peru, Panama, Yemen, Pakistan, Grenada, Mexico, etc..

Wake up people we are being herded down the Military Industrial Complex gauntlet again to another false war to enrich the greedy Corporations and distract the American people. Did we not learn anything from the Iraq war where we have killed well over 1 million Iraqi people, lost thousands of American lives and God knows how many hundreds of billions of dollars?

Who do you support, humanity or the greedy elite?

Many of our soldiers don't fight for America, they fight for their lives and their buddies beside them, because we put them in a war zone. They're not defending our freedoms, they're laying the foundation for permanent military bases to defend the freedoms of Exxon Mobil and British Petroleum.

Face it we're Imperialists pure and simple. The elite look down on all of us as expendable chattel.

"Military men are dumb, stupid animals to be used as pawns for foreign policy" Henry Kissinger

I’m not asking you to hate war, but to love peace? War, what is it good for, absolutely nothing!

Hello folks, if even Israel doesn't believe what the corporate owned MSM presstitutes are reporting it should give anyone pause to believe anything they report.

"We have seen reports from the opposition. It is not the first time. The opposition has an interest in drawing in international military intervention," Vice Prime Minister Moshe Yaalon said on Army Radio."

        @ crossfire hurricane,

I do know what the Muslim Brotherhood is. But you clearly do NOT know what Assad has done. The fact that they are far worse than the Muslim brotherhood speaks volume to how bad Syria's current regime really is. I also find it interesting how you chose that of all things to single out.

Or did you ignore the rest of my comment because that information was inconvenient?

        @ EvaPeron,

There are levels of degree here. Some are worse than others. Btw, we've been sending money to these piss holes in the sand since way before Obama's first term. We send money practically EVERYWHERE, and have been doing so for decades. It has almost nothing to do with Obama because we did this for so long before him.

And who are you God of Fate, it's hypocrites like you that give blind obedience to wars of aggression. You stand on your pulpit preaching Americans are above all the other people of the world. I have news for you we are not, as a matter of fact we are nothing but murderous Imperialists and our record bears that out in blaring neon letters.

You and your ilk have brought us a new lexicon to mitigate the euphemistic nightmarish evils we thrust upon the world daily. Syria is but one of a list of many wars we have instigated for the Oil, Banking and Corporate cartels. Only the gullible Americans buy into the new words or phrases which people use in place of terms which they consider to be more disagreeable or offensive to themselves. The willfully ignorant Americans have trouble facing the truth, so they invent the kind of a soft language to protect themselves from it, but you can’t hide from the facts and history.

        Torture now equals Enhanced Interrogation.

Shell Shock to Battle Fatigue to Operational Exhaustion and now Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Uber Rich or Wealthy is now Job Creators.

Killing of Innocent Men, Women and Children is now Collateral Damage. (We cry over the Sandy Hook murders but we don’t cry over the tens of thousands of children alone we kill or displace in other countries.)

        Poor are now Economically Disadvantaged.

        Ghetto is now Substandard Housing.

Media and Government Lies is now Disinformation or Misrepresentation.

Government or CIA Kidnapping and Assassination is now Rendition.

Nuclear Radiation Fallout Measurements are now Sunshine Units.

TSA Sexual Molestation and Radiation Scan is now Pre-boarding Security.

We soften the language so that we don’t have to feel guilty over the atrocities committed every day around the world in our names.

The list goes on and on. What was up is now down, Israeli assassination squads are commandos and Arab commandos are terrorists, war is peace, freedom is slavery, ignorance is strength, we create a revolution to establish a dictatorship, our politicians make lies sound truthful and war respectable.

What will it take to wake us up to become responsible stewards of our planet and humanity?

In our short history as a country we have bombed over 65 countries and have been at war for 216 of our 236 years. Is this what we want our legacy as a country to be? Is this something to be proud of?

        The Revolutionary War – 1775 – 1783

        The Whiskey Rebellion – 1789 - 1794

        The War of 1812 – 1812 – 1814

        The Mexican American War – 1846 – 1848

        The American Civil War – 1861 – 1865

        The Spanish American War – 1897 – 1898

        The Indian American Wars – 1775 – 1918

        World War I – 1914 – 1918

        World War II – 1941 – 1945

        Cold War 1945 – 1992

        The Vietnam War - 1962 – 1973

        The Invasion of Grenada – 1983 – 1984

The Invasion of Panama – 1989

        Operation Desert Storm – 1991 – 1992 (Kuwait)

        Operation United Shield – 1992 – 1995 (Somalia)

        Operation Determined Falcon – 1998 – 1999 (Kosovo, Albania)

        Operation Enduring Freedom – 2001 – 2012 (Afghanistan)

        Operation Iraqi Freedom – 2003 – 2011 (Iraq)

        Operation Freedom Falcon – 2011 - ? (Libya)

        Operation ? (Syria proxy war) 2010 - ?

Not to mention lesser known wars and the arming of proxy wars. Here is a few that aren’t mentioned above.

Nicaragua, Haiti, Laos, Cambodia, Angola, Mozambique, Honduras, Chile, Congo, Yugoslavia, Lebanon, Angola, Columbia, Peru, Yemen, Pakistan, etc..

The facts and history clearly outline that we have lost our way as a country and it is up to the people of the United States to restore our once good name and reputation. We can start by making our CONSTITUTION legal again and not allow anything or anyone to change it. We can also denounce the low information (there's another euphemism for you) war mongers. If we can’t stand up to this responsibility our future is tenuous at best.

Ok since you clearly lack even the most basic idea of how foreign aid works, I shall explain to you.

First, the President submits a budget which is then picked apart by the Budget Committee (headed by Republican Raul Ryan) who then set spending levels and revenue. Then to appropriation committees. After which the Senate will give it's own version which is then played with until both sides are satisfied the best they can be. After which Congress votes and approves it.

Now tell me, with a Republican controlled House and a Congress who has 100% control over who gets what money, how is Obama "giving" our money away?

Yeah that's what I thought. Next time, ditch the dumbass rhetoric.

This aint our fight its a civil war and frankly it doesnt matter who wins they are both bad. Let them kill each other. War is hell and people die and yes civilians die too. We cant save the world so lets stop trying. I ll probably root for Assad lesser of two evils. At least we know what he is. Assad at least leaves other religions alone for the most part. I sure dont want crazy Islamists (FSA) like the Brotherhood to get in there and rule like what happened in Egypt. So then people of other religions or beliefs are targeted and killed cause they are not Islamic. So f..in what if they use chemical weapons against each other. We dont need to be involved in another mid-east country that hates us. We dont need to support regimes and a people that hate us. Stay the hell out of Syria!

This line was laid down by a politician, so there are many variables to consider. How much gas? How far did it travel? Did anyone factor in the wind. How many were injured or killed, and what was the demographic breakdown? How many of those people were of voting age? What do the polls say?

If this "line" were an actual line, in actual sand, it would look like the track made by a drunken snake.

Let us not get carried away too much by propaganda unleashed by oil rich Sunni rulers like those of House of Saud, Qatar, Kuwait, UAE and other Sunni Arab League nations, oil companies and their lobbyists.

These are similar to stories being floated before each Iraqi war.

At least examine the huge losses of Iraqi wars, before jumping on anything these people say.

After Iraqi war experiences and feeling the results, no one with a little sense will contribute to manipulating oil prices from $40 in 2009 to more than $110 dollars now by imposing sanctions on Iranian oil.

WE HAVE NO ROLES IN SYRIA AND IRAN.

All this is blown out of proportion, this gas if it's true most have been tear gas and used here at home and many other countries police forces.

In this case they clearly did not use gas that attacked the longs or so ,or Mustard gas ,or a nerve gas like they used in WW 1 and were deadly. In WW2 in the service we all had our gasmask but never had to use them,we lost too many good men but it would have been worse if Germany or Japan had used the gas to fight us.

Jonathan Invisible Hand and Roadrunnero Wishing you a beautiful Christmas

I appreciate your comments and insight into this ongoing war. All have valid points. Political change in the best of circumstances is difficult. When you have a war worshipping religion whipping the populace into a fevered war mindset it becomes even more difficult if not impossible to bring about a peaceful solution.

With regards to the blending of secularism and Islam the two approaches to governance are not compatible. If this supposition is correct then it follows that one or the other will be suppressed or destroyed. I see the Islamists winning this one. I also see them eventually turning on each other until they have destroyed their countries to such an extent that there will be a massive death toll. If the US stays out of it then we will not be taken down with them.

I believe it was Paul in the N.T. who said " Let all the poisons lurking in the mud hatch out ". Whether this perspective is appropriate to this situation I do not know. There is always that desire to save people from suffering fron their own insanity. No one want to see children suffer.

We were warned of this by Eisenhower as he made some kind of deal with the devil as it was with industry to win WW2.. A war we got into I would think by their hands and scheming.. Pearl Harbor, Gulf of Tonken, Korea, Gulf Wars and all the other piss holes we have been sucked into or false flagged our way into are big money.. What is Washington's plan?? They seem to be chipping away at the documents that are the foundation of this great country.. Limited war for almost any reason at the presidents finger tips without any check or balance?? Patriot act which is anything but patriotic as it curtailed free speech and allows domestic spying with little safeguards.. Liberals putting their own opinions on Constitutional amendments that are well defined by the founding fathers.. So much so a 5/4 Supreme court decision on the meaning of the second amendment?? This bastardizing of the document has to stop and We The People have to say enough is enough.. Obama says the Constitution needs updated as it has too many roadblocks for his agenda?? IS HE NUTS???? ARE HIS FOLLOWERS NUTS??? His socialist agenda of redistributing wealth should be a red flag to us all.. This country was built on hard work not handouts, what life lesson does someone learn from a free ride??

Roadrunnero I would agree Obama's agenda is dangerous. However long before he came to the presidency there were other presidents equally commited to destroy America her Constitution and the liberties that the American people have foolishly allowed to be stolen from them. Our vote no longer has the power to effect positive change for this country. I would also agree that the military industrial complex has ultimately harmed this country and our forefathers warned against getting too involved in the affairs of other countries. Unfortunately sometimes countries do have to get involved and an example of this would be WW2. I personally think we should get out of these countries stop all migration and let the Muslim dominated countries implode. Out of the rubble they may rebuild a better society. However, this perspective does not give any comfort as I find watching the suffering of even my enemy difficult to bear. I can tell you that most Muslims do not share this sympathetic feeling toward who they see as an infidel.

WW3 could be avoided but as long as this archaic economic growth model continues, which is dependent on a growing working population and the inefficient use of resources, the world will become more stressed and violent. Many of the jobs lost has been directly related to mechanization. Combine the loss of work squandered resources and the overpopulation problem and you have a recipe for disaster of mega proportions.

We have reached a tipping point and as long as people think it is their God given right to have as many children as they want the problems will get worse. The Middle East Muslim population explosion is a prime example of how economic and even the ability to feed themselves encourage fighting over resources. Mexico China India and parts of South America also have a severe problem with overpopulation. Migration becomes a problem for all western countries who have engaged in responsible birth rate growth as these overpopulated countries expect to unload their excess off on us.

Unless there is a world wide reduction in population coupled with an efficient and humane work program we are headed for some very horrendous wars. Do I think socialism is the answer? No socialism does not offer enough of the answers needed but neither does a corrupt Corporatocracy. Communism is even worse than Socialism and Capitalism on steroids. It is time to rethink the direction America takes. Let me be clear I do not advocate trashing the Constitution. Our Constitution was a brilliant work for healthy governance not imperfect but full of great promise. Our government was founded in part on Christian principals and the lessons of honesty integrity charity and cooperation. Unfortunately these guiding principals have been lost to a Corporate nightmare. I can't tell you how many people that I've seen buckle under to unethical and even cruel practices in government and business all in the name of profit.

Profit must be balanced with ethics lest we all be lost to the corrupting influence of greed. You can not legislate morality but you can teach it expect it and remove leaders quickly from office who lack the moral courage necessary to do right by those who put their trust in them.

I wish Assad and Shiites kill as many Sunni mad people as they can.

Yea it sounds like things are "in control" over there. I wonder what the President and NATO's plan is to keep things contained? The genie has already been let out of the bottle. It makes you really appreciate all that you have this Christmas and recognize that spending quality time with loved ones in peace is what matters, not buying expensive gifts you can't afford to give and getting brainwashed by the the marketing hype. Happy Holidays to all.

It doesn't help when you have the increasingly illegitimate UN, particularly Russia and China blocking anything that goes against the Syrian government

Weird speech is also being used not only in english but in there language in Homs. And it could be true that An irritant gas was used by Assad and not mustard gas. And this speech is sound weapon on the mental lobe and can not be easily distorted normally. It takes 1-2 people to make such an effect on a communiity. And 10 -20 to mess-up the whole world s' coordination. This is most unfortunate. Doctors' do know best about this.

Weird speech is also being used, a distorted view to engender empathy and anger. The talk permeates not only the unsettled region of its origin in the Middle East, but also into the world. Whether the truth is being spoken of the weapons used by Assad upon his people, the talk surrounding the attacks is a viral weapon. It concusses the mind, leaving the listener with its full impression. Truth becomes inconsequential once the stance to embrace outrage has been taken. It takes as little as 1-2 people to spread this contagion, a network to infect the world.

If the reports do get confirmed, then it's more likely looking like that soon, international military action in some way is gonna be taken, just as likely as Israel striking Iran's nuclear facilities within the next year to prevent Iran from using nuclear weapons to attack Israel or anyone else

When will Americans wake up, WW2 brought to power a huge repressive industrial-military complex that has controlled the US since then.. Maybe our government struck a deal with them like a deal with the Devil because we were getting into something that was a loosing battle.. FDR warned us...

Roadrunnero, it was President Eisenhower that warned us against the Military-Industrial Complex. FDR increased it by using Lend-Lease, inventions of new and more powerful weapons, Truman who used the two atomic weapons we had. The second was used because we had it and he wanted to make sure the first wasn't a fluke.

Truman also gave the French a Billion Bucks to fight in then IndoChina, now Vietnam. He also had the first American die there under his Presidency, in 1949. Never, ever believe the 1959 myth about the first American death.

JFK was more interested in Cuba than anywhere, including the fighting in Vietnam. It was Eisenhower, not JFK or Johnson who began the escalation in Vietnam, with JFK and Johnson continuing the same. However, Johnson decided not to run for President again, unofficially, inasmuch as he no longer wanted the blood of children on his hand. I've still not had the foggiest idea what his official reason was.

The average of a person in Vietnam was 19. I was 20. The average of Korean vets 23 and WW2 26 to 29. My Dad was 19 in WW2, 23 in Korea and 48 in Vietnam. Three wars for my father, one for me and two of my brothers (Vietnam) and two for a third brother (Vietnam and Desert Storm). M brothers were all 18 during their stay in Vietnam. I finished at 22.

I don't know the average of people that are in Iraq or Afghanistan, but I suspect it's around 25. The oldest veteran killed in either of those two countries is 60 - so far.

These are a few facts about earlier and present wars. I suspect that if we enter some type of engagement, probably Libya style, in Syria, the average age will be less than 26.

Should we help the Syrian people, I sincerely hope it's the people, not any type of government. Look at what's happened in Egypt. Libya has no MSM leaders. The people, Bedouins and residents of Suk el Jiuma, among other tribes and places (where I lived for three years) primarily, would hang them by their nuts. Then they'd decide what to do with the living while feeding the dead to the Camels and other animals that are omnivorous, including desert elephants and lions.

From there I don't know what would happen. I do know I don't want to get involved in Syria except to help the Turks. They happen to be our best friends in the region, moreso than Israel, who want only our money and weapon systems. At least that's my belief about the Middle East. That's combined with facts about our wars, with the exception of Desert Storm, since the 1940's.

Desert Storm vets are treated about the same as Vietnam vets, possibly worse.

bmoreheard, are you kidding me? If the reports are confirmed? Israel is the one that came up with the yellow cake uranium in Iraq that turned out to be false. Are they the ones who will confirm Syrian gas? Israel has already taken the Golan heights from Syria and is protected by the US. Stop Israel and their would be peace in the middle east. Don't you think the US is watching those chemical weapons 24-7 from satellites? Possibly drones? This is all a set up and anybody that falls for this needs to go back to history class. There is no such thing as a political or religious war. Find the money and you find why there was a war. It's all economics. I wish I could explain the economics of every war the US fought but I can't do it on here. We fought Iraq and then the US taxpayers paid for a 42" oil pipeline to Israel. Now Israel gets all the oil they need and sell some to us. That's economics. Merry Christmas

parkerjoe. Your muslim bias always shows its ugly head. There is no pipeline going from Iraq, through Jordanor Syria (the only way) to Israel. Are you nuts or just a misinformed soul? Wars of muslims against muslim are now israel's fault? So is Mali? Sudan? Pakistan? you name it and muslims are killing muslims. I am sure you are not proud of extremists in your religion and you need an escape goat.

farideh, I happen to be a Polish Jew against Zionism. A group here in the US called Jews against Zionism is growing very fast. Why do you think that Obama got elected even though Netanyhoo hates his guts. We do not support Zionism and many Jews supported Obama especially with money. Haliburton and Bectl built that pipeline from Kikurk(northern Iraq) to Haifa harbor in Israel. Remeber the companies our last vice president was a CEO at. He is the one that pushed for war with Iraq. Were you some how hurt by a Muslim that would cause you to act this way? You also mention Sudan. Israel supplies weapons to North Sudan to fight Southern Sudan. If you give me your e-mail address maybe I can teach you about the history of the mid-east and it's real problems. What part of Israel are you from farideh?

Sunni Islamic extremism has gone beyond tolerable levels all over the world including Muslim nations.

It is better if those opposing them like Assad and others start gassing palaces of Sunni rulers of House of Saud, Qatar, Kuwait, UAE and other Arab League nations and Sunni clerics and scholars.

At least half of world problems including economic ones will be solved right away.

Islam and Communism are always going to be at odds with Christians and democratic societies.. Obama would want to lessen the hostilities by making us more socialist, the subjects of a ruling hand that protects us from ourselves.. Iraq had thousands of tons of weaponized poison gas that took us years to destroy in incinerators.. All these countries have it and some like Iran have low yield dirty nuclear bombs and ones that will just contaminate areas with air bursts.. Civilized war is gone and buried, the only thing holding us back is retaliation in kind and mutual assured destruction..

Exactly, who's to say that the rebels wouldn't do this to innocent people in order to draw the might of the U.S. military into their civil war in order to defeat Assad and put themselves in power. I hope that this administration is not going to commit U.S. resources and get involved in a civil war based on unknown foreign "local eyewitnesses and activists"! The same strategy is used by "activists" like Hamas who purposely launch rockets from Mosques and schoolyards hoping that an Israeli retaliation will result in the horrific death of innocents in an attempt to blame Israel and gain themselves international political capital.

John how do we know the Syrian regime is bad other then what we are told by our government and news reporters? Every reporter I've heard said he only talked to the rebels. Is this fair reporting? Not in my book. Close to a year ago, Assad put to vote a lot of reforms including Presidential elections. Things were calm for awhile until reports of rebels entering the country including known terrorist. Hillary is already going around to set up a new Syrian regime friendly to the US. Who do we think we are? Newspapers all over the world say how wrong we are for what were doing. US has been brainwashed to believe what ever our government and newspapers say while we go broke to pay for these wars. I get sick when I read how many soldiers were lost but also how they don't mention how many civilian deaths on the other side. Since 1975, 42,000 children have died in Viet Nam from left over land mines. That is really sick. Sometimes I wonder who the real terrorist are. I love the US, and because of that I want us to be a good example to the world. We have fallen way short of that now. Merry Christmas

Depends on a number of things. If it is tear gas or something, no not really, if they are adding something to try and make it deadly, say volatilized pesticides(the doctor mentioned in the report is an idiot. Many liquid pesticides volatilize at temperatures over 95 degrees Fahrenheit, and still maintain potency. Anyone who has dealt with lawn pesticides will tell you that), then maybe. Legal pesticides really are not considered chemical weapons.

Chemical weapon nerve agents (CWNAs) are not gases. They are aerosols or aerosolized to be released as vapors. Sarin, VX, etc. are basically extra strength/poisonous pesticides. They were originally synthesized/discovered by the Nazis by using pesticides as the parent compounds.

Mark, it is very sad but the mid-east has never been a problem in my life time and I'm 60 years old. The Ottoman Empire lasted for hundreds of years in peace. This trouble all started when Britain in 1917 gave away land that wasn't theirs under the Balfour act. It all came apart in 1967 when Israel attacked all it's neighboring countries and stole their land. The Golan Heights from Syria, The Jordan Valley from Jordan, and Gaza and the Sinai from Egypt. Under the Geneva convention after WW11, you cannot gain land through war. Israel is stealing land from the Palestinians everyday. I can see why they are mad. Israel almost lost that war in 1967, and would have if it were not for the United States. We even had the 101st and the 82nd ready and armed in the event Israel lost. Massive amounts of top quality military equipment supplied by the US saved their a$$. We taxpayers give Israel over 20 billion a year and their are only 7 1/2 million people there. Israeli's all become dual citizens of the US and Israel so they don't have to pay a dime in tax to the US. That was in the Jerusalem Post and the Harratz newspapers. I read them everyday. I get more truth from their press than ours. Merry Christmas

People backed Hitler or just looked the other way. I made up my mind a long time ago not to be one of these people, so by reading history and learning whats going on in this world I can avoid history repeating itself.

I choose not to believe anything these car-bombing, Al Qaeda-affiliated "activists" say.

Assad is seeming more and more like Hitler now.

                                      1. Why should the US president do anything about a civil war in a foreign country?

                                      2. What makes the world think it is any of the US business.

                                      3. Trust who? Still waiting to see those WMD in Iraq.

                                      4. Why help another terrorist group as the Muslim Brotherhood come into power?

The WMD's were probably moved to Syria as was stated all along by the CIA, or did you conveniently forget that part?
