Mourners arrive at a cremation ground to attend the funeral of a rape victim after her body arrived from Singapore, in New Delhi on Sunday.
NEW DELHI - The body of a woman whose gang rape provoked protests and rare national debate about violence against women in India arrived back in New Delhi early on Sunday and was quickly cremated at a private ceremony.
The unidentified 23-year-old medical student died from her injuries on Saturday, prompting promises of action from a government that has struggled to respond to public outrage.
She had suffered brain injuries and massive internal injuries in the attack on Dec. 16, and died in hospital in Singapore where she had been taken for treatment.
She and a male friend had been returning home from a movie theater, media reports say, when six men on a bus beat them with metal rods and repeatedly raped the woman. The friend survived.
India charges six suspects with murder after victim of horrific gang rape dies
Six suspects were charged with murder after her death.
A Reuters correspondent saw family members who had been with her in Singapore take her body from the airport to their Delhi home in an ambulance with a police escort.
Ruling party leader Sonia Gandhi was seen arriving at the airport when the plane landed and Prime Minister Mannmohan Singh's convoy was also there, the witness said.
A 23-year-old medical student who was raped and attacked on a city bus in New Delhi has died, resulting in charges against six men. Even before she died, her savage attack triggered mass protests about treatment of women. NBC's Duncan Golestani reports.
The body was then taken to a crematorium and cremated. Media were kept away but a Reuters witness saw the woman's family and government officials, including junior home minister, R.P.N. Singh, coming out of the crematorium.
Security in the capital remained tight after authorities, worried about the reaction to the news of her death, had on Saturday deployed thousands of policemen and closed some roads and metro stations.
Protesters still gathered, in New Delhi and other cities, to keep the pressure on Singh's government to get tougher on crime against women. Last weekend, protesters fought pitched battles with police.
On Sunday, lines of policemen in riot gear and armed with heavy wooden sticks stood in front of metal barricades closing off roads in New Delhi. Morning traffic was light.
Government caught off-guard
The outcry over the attack caught the government off-guard. It took a week for Singh to make a statement, infuriating many protesters.
Issues such as rape, dowry-related deaths and female infanticide rarely enter mainstream political discourse in India.
The 23-year-old who was gang-raped in New Delhi and thrown from a bus has died from her injuries in Singapore, where she was being treated. NBC's Natalie Morales reports.
Analysts say the death of the woman dubbed "Amanat," an Urdu word meaning "treasure," by some Indian media could change that, although it is too early to say whether the protesters calling for government action to better safeguard women can sustain their momentum through to national elections due in 2014.
India gang-rape victim dies in hospital; case focused attention on sexual violence
Newspapers raised doubts about the commitment of both male politicians and the police to protecting women.
"Would the Indian political system and class have been so indifferent to the problem of sexual violence if half or even one-third of all legislators were women?" the Hindu newspaper asked.
The Indian Express acknowledged the police force was understaffed and poorly paid, but there was more to it than that.
"It is geared towards dominating citizens rather than working for them, not to mention being open to influential interests," the newspaper said. "It reflects the misogyny around us, rather than actively fighting for the rights of citizens who happen to be female."
PhotoBlog: Police try to temper outrage over gang rape
Most sex crimes in India go unreported, many offenders go unpunished, and the wheels of justice turn slowly, according to social activists, who say that successive governments have done little to ensure the safety of women.
Commentators and sociologists say the rape has tapped into a deep well of frustration many Indians feel over what they see as weak governance and poor leadership on social issues.
New Delhi has the highest number of sex crimes among India's major cities, with a rape reported on average every 18 hours, according to police figures. Government data show the number of reported rape cases in India rose by nearly 17 percent between 2007 and 2011.

Aww, that's sad news. I was hoping for her. Perhaps this was more merciful.. Condolences to her family, friends and all who cared about her. Its good to see the outcry this has generated, hopefully it brings changes for the better. Maybe some good will come of it. Sometimes it takes acts of evil, to bring about good things.
And I hope they catch the human trash that did this, they deserve nothing less than public castration. Then put them in a cold cell, until they die.
Screw that, disolve them in a bucket of acid inch by inch to send a message you freaking hippy pacifist. They needa suffer!!!
Sadly the Indian politicians will do nothing. Two hundred years ago the British administrators tried to ban suttee - it still goes on today. It is very difficult to persuade some folks that some of their much valued 'cultural' practices are totally abhorrent by modern standards and have no place in the twenty-first century.
"And I hope they catch the human trash that did this, they deserve nothing less than public castration."
Many Indian politicians deserve this treatment.
Nehru/Gandhi dynasty rulers with zero morals, values, and characters were ruling most of the times. So start from them and their rapists, bandits, looters, crimnals gang members!
Worst of all they have been fake from top to bottom and many fooled by wearing Gandhi caps!
Now an uneducated Italian mafia boss and her gang are ruling India.
What can you expect from such rulers?
The criminals are in jail, awaiting trial. They will probably get the ultimate penalty--hanging.
They do not define an entire nation or people.
India has 1.5 Billion people---you are bound to find a handful of criminal types when you are talking about a population that large.
Note: This incident is rare. It is unusual. The public is in support of the victim and victims' rights.
Indian law is based on English law. There is no difference. Women have equal rights, under the law.
I see worse--every time I pick up an American newspaper. Do the crimes committed by WHITES define all whites????(mass shootings, pedophilia, serial killings, etc.)
Duh!!!
I hate seeing how white Americans are the first to stereotype, blame an entire nation for the criminal acts of six individuals.
Western news media outlets never talk about the 99.9% of Indians who are law-abiding, decent, family folk.
Most Indians live a typical, "Leave It To Beaver" ---boring existence. (For those who don't know, "Leave it to Beaver" was a show from the 1960s, which portrayed a clean-cut middle-class family).
RIP, Amanat, a life well lived but cut short by the cruelty of a few - the lowest of the low. (Would not insult animals by calling them that, just the lowest rubbish of human kind.) They impaled her with those metal rods, which is why she needed surgery.
So sorry for the young woman's companion as well, he'll never be the same, what horrific trauma.
I don't condemn all of India, no reasonable person would, but - anyone who thinks that culturally, women have equal rights in India, is kidding themselves. I bet that their news won't go into it, due to the riots and protests over this terrible assault and murder, but there are more details to this story would be my guess - a class/caste issue, something.
Around the world, in EVERY country, women are treated as second class citizens. It does not matter what country this happened in, it happens everyday! Women make up more than 54% of the world population and yet, have no power. NONE! When women run for office, they are mocked, ridiculed and treated as though they haven't got a brain and, if they do have a brain, then they are terrible mothers or wives for running for office and neglecting their family. Women are the vessels of life and yet their struggles are rarely reported in a positive light. Somehow, the masses think they deserve it, or worse, asked for it, when it comes to a crime like this. It does not matter what a woman is wearing, how late she is out, what color her hair is, or anything else she may appear to be. RAPE IS RAPE!! NO IS NO!! No woman, or man for that matter, asks to be raped!! Rape is a violent crime!! It changes a life FOREVER! You NEVER fully get over it! And, yet, the penalty in most countries does not even involve jail time. IF it does, they are let out for 'good behavior', often without the victim being notified. Women are people, not trash, not dogs, not property. The people who did this to this poor woman were bred this way. You don't just do this in the spur of the moment. It's in the culture, period.
The Indian government's TOTAL, LONG TERM reaction to this horrific crime should give Americans direction as to whether to continue to do business with India, or to boycott them. Saying this is a result of 'cultural customs" is bogus! Slavery is in the Bible, but we did away with it 150 years ago! As a nation we should make trade decisions like we do in our neighborhoods. If a business person offends us, we shop elsewhere!
@wiseone-358999 - I can't decide if you're being sarcastic or if you're serious.
I beg to disagree with you when you say they do not define an entire nation; oh yes they do when it comes to the treatment of women. It's a known fact that women in India are treated the worst when comparing all countries within the G20 nations (a bloc of developing nations established on 20 August 2003). As an example, taken from an article whose web address is shown below:
The caste system is alive and well and it carries over to America. One only has to work with two Indians who happen to be from two different castes to witness one treat the other with disdain. Don't think that just because they come here that they leave their prejudice amongst one another back in India - no way.
As far as I'm concerned, America supports the horrific treatment of women in India because we continue to do business with India, sending our jobs there and importing workers via H1b VISA's, despite the lack of human rights and dignity afforded to women in that country. It's too ugly to think about, so we don't - we just think about profits, if there really are profits to off shoring and importing jobs.
http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2012/jul/23/why-india-bad-for-women
They should let this womans family take those poles and shove them up those guys a-holes.
They should be allowed to carry guns in India and this wouldn't have happened.
nothing is going to change .....remember that... unless that government See's rape as we do,a crime .
if anything the families need to be compensated
WISEONE. You are correct that women enjoy equal rights. But only in certain sections of society. However, in lower strata the life of women is indeed bad. And most of Indian population belong to the lower strata. Even in recent times as we speak, there are many instances where rape victims are forced to accept the evil done to them. Horribly, the victim is forced/pressured to marry the perpetrators. The people who pressure the victim are shamefully village elders, policemen, politicians and others who have authority. It is indeed shameful!
Top Indian politicians are coming out with statements on this incident such as girls should not go out at night and they should not wear revealing cloths. This mindset with Indian politicians and some old people are wrong. Sadly, 95% of Indian politicians are old! As you said, women are now in high positions, how can they stay at home whey have to work night shifts to support their family.
How do you expect a country like India to grow when more than 90% of population live in fear to even voice their opinions. India is just democracy in words. This is the difference between U.S and India, an individual in U.S can voice their opinion without fear, which is fundamental to any true democracy.
Sadly, evil like this has to happen to start some change. India will change at some point, but from my point of view that change is couple of generations away!
"Most sex crimes in India go unreported, many offenders go unpunished, and the wheels of justice turn slowly, according to social activists, who say that successive governments have done little to ensure the safety of women. "
Most of India's evils started with the first PM, fake and bas***rd Jawaharlal Nehru. Nehru was born in a brothel. He did not do much except raping and enjoying fruits of power.
He assembled similar gangsters and they hijacked Gandhi cap and Congress party.
Nehru/Gandhi dynasty is headed by an uneducated and most immoral Italian mafia boss.
A survey conducted by Thomson Reuters’ Trust reveals that India is at par with Afghanistan, Congo and Somalia as one of the most dangerous places for women. In 2004, a woman was raped every 54 minutes. Today it is every 20 minutes.
Italian mafia boss has been ruling since 2004 and there has been complete breakdown of all democratic institutions, morals and values!
Results are there for all of you to see!
"New Delhi's chief minister, Sheila Dik@!$%#, [...]" - Chief minister's name is Sheila Dik@!$%#, which your ever-vigilant monitoring program changed to something else. Kindly restore the proper spelling.
I see that, it got changed it in my comment too.
This has been absolutely heartbreaking but there seems to be an inconsistency going on here. I'm repeating most of this from a previous post but question why the two victims have not been named and why there has been no news available about the condition of the man.
Here are some stats
http://indiansawaal.com/rape-statistics-in-india/
If these crimes are normally handled in such a casual manner, why the interest in this particular case??? She was flown to Singapore, not by her family but by the government.
The decision to send her to Singapore was also debated by the medical community.
Members of the Embassy were by her side along with the family.
And now these officials came to meet the plane
and more were at the crematorium.
I'm guessing that the young couple so brutally victimized are related / connected to some very important people. The monsters in charge of the bus to hell are pretty much toast as soon as the media spotlight turns to something different.
I hope this young woman's terrible death is not totally in vain but is used for change for all of the people of India.
Hello chef,
Good post with some relevant info. I agree with you, but I would not expect a lot of change in the near future.
Utter speculation and more than likely not any truth to what you say Chef...just because people are not identified doesnt mean they are connected to anyone of any importance even in India if the family does not wish it the victim(s) are not identified and often for the safety of the remaining members of the family
Tired of Conspiracy Theorists like yourself
HEY ED!!! Have a very Happy New Year!!! ☺
And a joyous New Year to you as well!!!
By the way, I think John Smith is jealous of your posts. They involve logic and common sense!
Hi Ed. Thanks so much for the vote of confidence.
Was in a hurry earlier since I had to go to work and had no interest in responding to someone making accusations about a post without knowing what they're talking about, really didn't like how he treated shona at 6.2 (there are ways of requesting information without the hostility) but MOSTLY someone who would scorn the Statue of Liberty. Didn't feel like he was worth my time. Had caught this earlier - post 114.

Sometimes an event takes place in a nation which thrusts all attention suddenly onto a chronic problem too long ignored.Like a spark catching and igniting massive wildfires, startling in the speed because of the long drought and built up overgrowth. It isn't just one thing, but several combining, which leads to a spectacular situation and tragedy. So too, this horrible event of mass rape and finally death of a remarkable woman.
We aren't even allowed to know her name.Denied an identify, all we are told is she was a medical student. So we understand at the beginning, she was intelligent and looked forward to a career in medicine. It is clear, she wanted to help people, and so had a very caring personality towards others. It would see obvious this woman was a hard worker, was trusting, very responsible and dedicated. The kind of person anyone would want by their side, if they were ill or needed help.
To those who attacked her, they believe the following: Any woman or girl on the street alone, can be raped or beaten; females are worth less than animals; if women don't let males touch them, they can be beaten or raped; if women dishonor males, they can be killed;if women leave their homes without males they can be beaten, raped or killed;males will not be punished for anything they do to women;women are disposable; police are not there to protect women;women who complain about being attacked will be punished; males protect males.
Last, the police aren't there to protect, they are there to control. The government isn't there to change society. It is there to maintain the status. The last thing they want to do, is have to invest money into suddenly arresting men, for acting like...well bullies.Instead, they will make a show of these six, and then wait for the mobs to die down.Like other situations in their history.
But perhaps this beautiful amazing woman is more than the India government realizes. Just as other singular individuals in history have proven to be. Like Rosa Parks, Gandhi, and others. A spark that goes on to become a fire which burns into the soul of her country, even in death. When enough people will say, no more.Rape will have a face at last. Just like when a terrorist shot a ten year old child in the face, and a country said no more.
We never know who might end up playing a role in helping to bring about long overdue social changes to nation. In a world that desperately needs a light to turn to, when the common man and woman has struggled to be heard and finds at last someone to hold up and point to as a reason to say, enough!
May this incredibly brave woman, who had her life and treasured soul cruelly stolen, be at peace and her loved ones realize that India will one day better. That something positive can come to countless other women, because their daughter had been in the world
Evening Chefaz..Yes there are a lot of unanswered questions about this dreadful story and I hope in time it all comes out. As for the politicians over there, they are corrupt from the rotten top to the the rotten bottom. They are all crawling out of the wood work at the moment trying to score brownie points and to be seen doing "the right thing". All for political gain and all rather sickening. The only reason for this is they are have been massively embarrassed that this case reached the world audience. India likes to claim it is a new progressive country and they are the "new China" and this brings the government back to earth with a"thump". I to was hoping she would somehow survive, but in hindsight and what she would have suffered, maybe it is best she has gone...Poor lass...
HEY SHONA!!!
To learn that they were about to be married just adds one more break to the heart but grateful for the information, shona. Thank you. I was in tears off and on Friday after learning that she had passed.
Have a very Happy New Year.
Gidday chefaz..yes the info coming out was just getting worse and worse...and to find out she was getting married in 2 months was devastating. The world can be such a rotten place at times but there is also so much good...sometimes it is just a little hard to find at times. But with good people like yourself and so many others, there is always hope and courage and that is what pulls us through life....Only 13.5 hours to go here until 2013...wonder what this year will bring???......
Just rechecked our news here and they said her boy friend who she was with on the bus, they were getting married in February. They had been shopping for wedding outfits etc going by the victims neighbours. Very sad.
Good comment Wind... thanks for the info Shona1...(One vote each)..
True Martyrs. People who was not looking for injury, death or glory bringing about great change through living with the threat of all three, despite the circumstances.... a rallying point for positive change... not hatred or overthrow but reformation, salvation if you will.
My prayers for the family, survivor but my earnest prayer is that her death will fuel a "goodness" in her country, around the world, and in our hearts.
"The most powerful witness is not the act but the change the act brings in us."-Flame
Where did you read it was her boyfriend because the 8 or 9 stories I have read have never indicated they were nothing more than friends...
Seems like pure speculation on your part because her friend was a male
Please stop adding incorrect Information Shona unless you provide a source, because apparently yours is the only one they knew they were engaged
shona writes from Australia and it's very possible they are getting more information quicker or choosing to publish more details than US news sources.
Morning Chefaz....Hope you have a Happy New Year and health, wealth and happiness for 2013 Chefaz.
John: I know you think the world revolves around you but there other sources of info other than what you get over there in the States. I look all over the world BBC, NZ news, India news, CNN etc...amazing what you get told over there and we know otherwise. As at 19 hours ago here in Australia, ninemsn.news and I quote "The murdered victim of a gang-rape in New Delhi was to marry her boyfriend who was injured in the same attack, neighbours who attended her funeral said on Sunday. They had made all the wedding preparations and had planned a wedding party in Delhi," Meena Rai, who had been shopping with the victim for wedding outfits, told AFP. Usha Rai, who was also present for the cremation ceremony, added: "We know that she was going to get married in February." I hope that is clear enough for you John and I am not in the habit of "supplying incorrect information". Not my fault you don't get the correct info, take it up with your news service. Apology accepted on your behalf..and you have a Happy New Year over there!!!!....time here in Australia in case you need that Monday morning 10.30am EST.
There you go John. Was due to be married in February quote radio station Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. 3AW 10.52am Monday 31 December 2012 a live link to India....When they were thrown off the bus people just walked past and no one helped them for 20 minutes. Finally some one got a blanket from a Hotel and covered them both and called the cops...After reading your other posts you are not a particularly nice person. You are what we refer here in Australia as a "septic tank".. feel free to google that one, as you are full of it.
YOWZAH!!! YOU GO GIRL!!!
My apologies, shona. I was stretched for time (see my post above) and that little bit at 6.3 was about all i could pop off in a hurry. Great job. :)
India is among the 5 most dangerous countries to be a woman (Thomson Reuters Foundation findings, June 15, 2011). "Girls from rural villages taken to cities on the promise of jobs and wages are sold to brothels. Even when they do esp\cape or are resuced they can be rejected from their own families and left destitute. Its under-reported. There is also bonded slavery still in existence." – Mandy Marshall, Tearfund. The son of the India Congress president, Rahul Gandhi, scion of the Gandhi dynasty, a future prime minister of India, was himself accused of being the instigator of a gang rape. He got off. The girl and her family are in hiding, after threats were made from the powers that be. India has the largest sex-industry (rather sex-slavery industry) in the world. In Mumbai alone there are upwards of 1/4 million prostitutes, half-underaged, and many from the Himalayan regions, existng in the most dire of circumstances. NBCNews should really do a report on underaged Assamese and Nepalese girls being kidnapped .
If you go to Mumbai, try to stop by an area called Falkland Road. The squalor that the girls lived/worked/caged in is a page out of Dante's Inferno. Unconvinced? You can google Falkland Road Mumbai, takes 15 sec.
There's a book by Linda Smith, From Congress to the Brothel, on her eyewitness account in Mumbai. I quote a para:
"A 13-year-old girl crouches in a dark corner on the dusty floor, her hair dirty and tangled, her eyes hollow and lifeless. Raw sewage flowed through an uncovered ditch on the other side of the thin brothel wall. The scent of a hundred men clung to her small frame. Her expression revealed total desperation. This was not a look that said, "Please help me." This was a look that said, "I am doomed forever, beyond help, beyond hope."
You can fill in the rest with your imagination.
Nonsense. There is a sex industry, to be sure. I am sure that some of the females were forced into it, by one way or another.
However-------There are 1.5 BILLION people in India. 99.9% are law-abiding, decent, family folk. People live normal, "Leave it to Beaver"---- boring lives.
An anecdote or even a handful of incidents does not define a nation. Women have equal rights in India. Anyone who says otherwise is a liar.
PS: There are feminists and womens' rights groups over there. There are Indians who are working for a better India.
dumbone I seriously doubt 99.9% are law abiding family folk..as a matter of fact I know from personal experience a high majority are not...go to India some time and see how they drive(with no regard for human life) and they also have quite a few sweat shops and the large sex industry but those are just a couple of things wrong with India
Go there sometime and experience it for yourself or don't pretend you have a clue if you have never been there
Women do NOT have equal rights to Men in India
another fun fact for you India women are subservient to the men
Wrong.
Women can be anything they wish---lawyers, journalists, business owners, doctors, etc.
There are laws protecting womens' rights.
India had a female prime minister for many, many, years. There are female members of Parliment. There are quite a few female chief ministers of various states.
Years ago, it is true that parents did prefer to have a son more than a daughter. This is because the son would take care of the parents in old age. However, the old ways of thinking are changing.
Even the victim in this case--her father, a poor man, sold his land to educate his daughter.
My own female cousins have different professions-- a college professor, an engineer, a software developer, and one who just started her own company.
Of course, attitudes towards woman will vary depending on one's education, family, and sometimes--religion. You may find that some Indian muslims are more conservative than Indian hindus. There is no hard and fast rule. It really depends on education and upbringing. I have been in Indian villages, towns, and cities, and I have never seen or experienced any ill-will towards the female gender. My cousins who have only daughters---are happy and are educating them, just as they would educate sons. You would be surprised--in many families, the woman wields the power. The man follows.
So, because you have never seen "ill-will towards the female gender" means that it doesn't exist.(?)
This is the kind of thinking that continues to bring India into a downward spiral.
We need to have a world economic boycott against this country until their 'leaders' put enough pressure on those empowered to do something to combat the heinous crimes that are being perpetrated in plain sight.
This is a very sad day, Im just wondering if the government doesnt give a rats ass if the women get raped, then do you think the hospitals gave her very good treatment or do you think they dont or cant give a rats ass either. I see people on different sites all the time bashing the United States for this or for that, we may have our problems, but its still the BEST piece of land to squat on for now.
All these people who dont want government involved in anything, this is where you need to move.
All you people who want the government to take your guns away, this is where you need to move. For I promise you, if this were to happen to a girl here, someone (father or brother) would be out there with a gun, waiting for these asses to poke their heads out...My thoughts and PRAYERS go out to this young woman and her family. If these "Changes" that the Black Man in the White House is making, we will be more and more like this.
@towboater: "...then do you think the hospitals gave her very good treatment or do you think they dont or cant give a rats ass either." It has been widely reported that she was hospitalized in Singapore, not in India, and that she underwent more than one surgery but after being savagely assaulted, raped, and thrown from the moving bus, the damage to her body was too severe for her to survive.
Also, there was no need for you to attempt to use this very sad story to rant about gun control. The hysteria surrounding that issue is unwarranted. The target of gun control discussions is assault weapons in the possession of unstable people. I'm all for our citizens being able to bear arms, but not for racists and other hate groups being armed with assault weapons bought at gun shows where identification and background checks are not done. In fact, in a recent gun exchange two rocket launchers bought at gun shows were turned in. No matter how well armed you are, how much defense would you have against a rocket?
Women get raped everywhere dumbass...NO Government can stop rape and it happens in the US quite often and the situation you mentioned happens alot..usually in the brother/father getting themselves killed in the process
Tired of all you internet Rambos thinking you are tough @!$%# and acting like you could stop something instilled into humanity like rape/murder etc
JohnSmith78, You are a very callous, insensitive person (I won't call you a man)! Your "hangdog, we can't change human behavior" attitude was, luckily, not present when Abraham Lincoln signed the emancipation proclamation, 150 years ago! We CAN do better, we HAVE done better, and we WILL do better yet!
As an ethnic Indian male, this whole story is sickening.
India has capital punishment, and I do believe that would be fully appropriate in this case. The legal system does not allow for endless appeals, and so, justice should be served within five years.
I do hope that those who are truly guilty of this crime will soon have the pleasure of having their hands and feet bound, followed by a black hood placed around their head which should then be followed by a noose being placed around their neck - anything less would be a grave miscarriage of justice.
All rapists and those who exploit underage girls in the prostitution business in India need to be hanged.
And the ones that need to start this change are the Indian males. Period. Please encourage your friends/relatives who remain in India to continue to share this information with the world.
HM2959564, Amen! You hit the nail on the head! I couldn't have said it better!
You're right, and this does not go on only in India. However, I weep for this woman. How will our world ever go on with all of us, every country, denying the value of women? And, unfortunately, we are our own worst enemies. Women are the nurturing, loving, bolstering, strength of this world. We bring as much to the table as men, although our contributions may be different. Every nation must learn that strength as traditionally defined, is very arbitrary. We are all strong. We all need each other. We might need each other in very different ways, but the benefits we can offer each other can enrich and enlongate our lives. Truthfully, women are stronger than men in the ways that matter most. We all need the love, nurturing, compassion, support, and comfort women offer. Men, don't be ashamed to admit it. We need to end the subjugation of any who are oppressed, including our sisters. It is honorable for men to lift women and children up, and most do. Those who don't we must do our best to ID and segregate from society. Those genes and behaviors should die with them.
This is the cesspool of a country where the good ole US is sending most of their jobs? Go figure. Politics is a beeotch! If anything good can come out of this I would hope it raises the consciousness of India to bring about change. The change must be massive from their fundamental beliefs about women to the degrading social structure of caste systems to the unjust practices of the judicial system. They even need to change how they monitor their public transportation system. The likelihood of that type of change is slim. Their view of women is deeply rooted emerging from their religious beliefs. They will probably make an example out of these 6 men just to calm the public and revert right back to their same ways. A few laws may get changed to make it harder for criminals to pose as public transportation. Wishful thinking indeed.
she was the victim of rape, that is why she is not identified. it is to preserve her dignity. her friend survived but was brutally beaten as well. he is likely still hospitalized and who knows the extent of his injuries; he does not need to be harassed by the press to satisfy the public's curiosity. the press has given us all we need to know about this. it matters not what her name was or whether or not her family was politically connected. what is important is that india must address this issue- and that the rest of the world is watching.
just kill them. now!
filth.
It is estimated that there are 264 rapes of females occurring each day, which amounts to 11 rapes per hour. By any stretch of the imagination, this is an astounding figure when one takes into consideration that many rapes have gone unreported. Some critics say that the relative inferior status of girls in some cultures makes them susceptible because rape is treated as a private matter and remains under reported... majority of rapes go unreported..some come out many years later and its not just in the places where women are considered inferior like the Middle East and India it happens here in the US too
Castrate the offenders publicly and imprison them as jail meat.
This individual story is tragic, but the bigger tragedy is that this action is commonplace and ACCEPTED in INDIA. Our US tax dollars continue to be donated to this society where the police and government are controlled by chauvinists. Makes me sick.
Been to India 20 years ago. Loved the experience...........a beautiful country and beautiful people. Hard to believe/understand how they could be so barbaric in their treatment of women.
I agree with hm-2959564 .....to see a picture of these animals hanging would be gratifying.
Who is "they" ?
The criminals have been caught---they are in jail, awaiting trial.
They do not define the morals or attitude of an entire nation---of 1.5 Billion.
ahh yes wiseone because this is the only girl thats been raped in India....it wasnt the rape that got the media attention its the way they were beaten, raped and then thrown from a bus that did it...If it was just rape it probably would have been thrown under the rug
This is very sad.As far as I'm concerned these men are cowards and so is any other that has to rape a woman. Are they so ugly that they need to kill to get "the girl"??Death to these and those like these no matter country they are from..
Singapore is a really straight town for something like this to happen. These rapists should be hunted down like animals and disemboweled publicly.
Read the article Robert.
The crime happened in India, she was taken to Singapore for treatment...
It seems that Indian Government treated the violated, and thereafter, the dead woman well. Why didn't they do it at first? Such thing alike good gender policies, good policing can save thousands of women who reportedly violated and killed in India at a regular basis, according to the report. And it's my question also: Why didn't we know the identities of the victims? God bless her soul...
I just can't imagine what kind of messed up human could do this cruel act. I know Indian people here and they are kind and gentle. I did not know that their society or culture allowed these crimes against women. These crimes, verbal and physical, against women are taught in homes at young ages on how to treat women. It is critical that both the mother and the father set examples and discuss what is tolerated to their children. It is a disgrace to their culture and country when in the past they had one of the greasted examples of humanity ever in Ghandi. It is a disgrace to him.
Some of you hit it right on. US jobs are being out-sourced to this sickening backwards country. US companies are pouring $$ into this country. Wonderful.
Another comment mentioned that until the Indian male wants a change it won't happen. Apparently they DON'T want the change. They want the woman to be submissive & treat them like animals. Real class acts.
The CONGRESS aka UPA UPA is Garbage People Who takes pride in imposing Judea Christian Islam Sikhis on HINDUS of India aka Bharat. The Khans in Bullswood of Indian Film Industry and raping of Hindu and marrying Hindu and converting them to SISTER WIVES. Northern India is full of perverts with Islamic dirty culture through slavery. Initially Sonia Sardar were reluctant to help Hindu Girl-because these are Western World stooges. Their brain cells are upset to think of this.
This is alien culture. The name of gang raped medical student is not revealed but she is cremated. A Hindu Girl.
India is governed by British M5 -6-7 Mossed aka Gestapo French and Chinese and CIA other Spy agencies.
Pakistanis Banglistanis are openly imposed at Center in NEW NEW Delhi as key ministers and bureaucrats. Hindus gave free Pakistans and are themselves imposing Judea Christian Islam on themselves-Total self generated genocide..
Hindus are infighting as Sikhs Punjabis are hating Tamil Nadus and others.
Modi of Gujarat State is denied to visit Western World-whatever the hell that means-rape murder regime changers etc. All Women in USA are trying to be Men. There are no females in Western World.
Hindus in India want to be Judea Christian Islam- the monkeys mimicking Film Industry and Western Garbage.
Leave Hindus alone in Bharat.
Any society run by the rules of religions that were made by men so that men can dominate, have these problems. It is time to understand that religions made by men are not moral, and should be abolished if they cannot adapt and give women equal standing.
Cannot agree more, this is unfortunately true all across the board. Only secularization can moderate the man-made religions (uhh all religions though !) to consider women.
In cases such as this that if nothing is done then matters such as this should be resolved by the people and handled with some old fashioned justice.
Just hold all your phony indignation...this is India...does anyone seriously think this sad episode is actually going to fundamentally change the culture there?
@virgil -
you may not think so, but a lot of others do, which is why they are protesting in India and discussing here.
