Three months after being shot in the head by the Taliban, Pakistani teenager Malala Yousafzai is still on the road to recovery and as committed as ever to education advocacy. NBC's Keir Simmons reports.
LONDON — Malala Yousufzai, the Pakistani girl shot in the head by the Taliban for advocating girls' education, has been discharged from a hospital in the U.K. after doctors said she was well enough to spend some time recovering with her family.
The 15-year-old was shot at point-blank range in October after becoming a symbol of resistance to the insurgents' efforts to deny women education and other rights. The attack on Malala, which also wounded two of her classmates, prompted revulsion and condemnation, and helped galvanize supporters of women's education worldwide.
In a statement, the hospital treating her said she had been discharged on Thursday because she was healthy enough to be treated as an outpatient.
'Malala Day' marked in Pakistan, amid security fears
"Malala is a strong young woman and has worked hard with the people caring for her to make excellent progress in her recovery," Dave Rosser, medical director of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham where Malala was treated, said in a statement. "Following discussions with Malala and her medical team, we decided that she would benefit from being at home with her parents and two brothers."
Malala will be readmitted in late January or early February to undergo cranial reconstructive surgery as part of her long-term recovery, the hospital said. In the meantime, she will visit the hospital regularly to attend clinical appointments, the statement added.

Doctors said that although the bullet hit her left brow, it did not penetrate her skull but instead traveled underneath the skin along the side of her head and into her neck. The decision to send Malala to Britain was taken in consultation with her family; Pakistan is paying for her treatment.
Citing patient confidentiality, hospital authorities declined to say what her plans were to continue her education, though they acknowledge she is able to read in both English and Urdu.
The Pakistani teenager shot in the head by the Taliban for promoting girls' education has been released from hospital. Yousufzai will be treated as an outpatient at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham. ITN's Rupert Evelyn reports.
Malala was flown to the U.K. on Oct. 15, six days after the school bus shooting. She was treated by doctors specializing in neurosurgery, trauma and other disciplines in a department of the hospital which has treated hundreds of soldiers wounded in conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq.
'Spy of the West': Al-Qaida, Taliban struggle to justify attack on Pakistani teen
The wave of condemnation that followed the attack prompted the Taliban to release statements justifying their action. Malala quickly became an international cause celebre and became a contender to become Time's Person of the Year 2012.
More than 250,000 people have also signed online petitions calling for her to be nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize for her activism.
Yousufzai's father said in October he was sure she would "rise again" to pursue her dreams after medical treatment.
This month Pakistan appointed Malala's father, Ziauddin, as its education attache in Birmingham. The position, with an initial three-year commitment, virtually guarantees that Malala will remain in Britain for now.
In Paris, the courageous Pakistani ten Malala Yousafzai was honored at an event marking the U.N.'s Human Rights Day. NBC's Amna Nawaz reports.

The Taliban's greatest "Martyr". She reprents the good future and intelligence of her people where the Taliban animals showed their age old ignorant hate. Long live Malala and wishing you the brightest future.
Amen, well said.
I am glad she got to see female role models in the hospital that saved her life, to give her strength in her convictions. I hope she carries stories back of women saving lives and being strong on their own, so other females will gain the strength of conviction and will not stand for the backward belief of the extremists. I wish her well, and woud love to see her activism become a movememnt that helps change the muslim world into a modern one.
I'm so thankful she is going to be OK physically. I so hope she is ok mentally as well and doesn't have any horrible dreams from this. She is so beautiful and so much to look forward to.
She has no future, she's still wearing the oppressive headdress. Even if the Taliban left her alone her religion will continue to keep her down.
New Gawker, sounds like you're just a lovely terrible person. Keep in mind this girl is an adherent Muslim. She represents the other side of the coin, the side you don't hear about on Fox News, or the MSM. She's one of the Muslims who want peace, who want equality, and who want respect. She represents the majority of all Muslims. The ones we hear so much of, the terrorists, the Taliban, if we use them to represent their religion, and judge everyone of the religious beliefs to be the same as them, we're missing the larger point. After all, what's to stop the rest of the world from judging Christianity based upon the actions of Mexican Drug Cartels, or Italian Mobsters? After all, they're very Catholic (as a matter of fact, they are the main source of income to the church in Mexico, and have long been a primary source of income in Italy). Everyone needs to have a global view of what this girl's sacrifice represents.
Well said Travis. Christians have our share of evil doers who do terrible things in the name of God. We don't want to be judged by their despicable actions and the ignorant things they say and do before the entire world. We should not judge any other religious group by the actions of a minority group of monsters like these terrorists committing crimes against humanity in the name of their God. We have those wonderful high profile Christians who are blacking the eyes of all Christians such as, Paul Ryan and Pastor Terry Jones of his cult The Dove World Outreach Center (a misnomer if ever there was one).
"This month Pakistan appointed Malala's father, Ziauddin, as its education attache in Birmingham. The position, with an initial three-year commitment, virtually guarantees that Malala will remain in Britain for now."
Malala should write a BLISTERING rebuke of those Taliban failures! Maybe she should tour the Pakistani Universities and do ALL the talk shows! Of course, with a special contingent of Royal Marines, just to make the Taliban soil themselves at the thought of an attack..... by this young girl! It's her turn, to take aim!
Some people forget there are (like Christians) good Muslims and Bad muslims and seem to mix them all into one big pot which is wrong. Good Muslims live in fear of the bad ones for the most part and any one of them who voices an opinion against the bad ones has to pay accorcing to them. This girl only wanted women to be educated. Look at the price she had to pay. The good part is instead of spreading more fear into the opposition the bad Muslims made a focal point for all those who would utter the words give me freedom or death!
The Drug Cartels are outlaws; they are not strict followers to Christianity or use Bible verses to justify their wrong doing. Unlike Taliban and other groups; who can claim hundreds of Quran's verses and tons of Ahadith to support their actions. The Drug Cartels do not kill who does not use drugs or impose their ideologies on Catholics and non-Catholics...Drug Cartels do not rip you off your freedom - given by God to humanity- to learn and worship and dress anyway you like. Drug Cartels do not wish to rule Mexico in the name of Christianity. You cannot compare a gang, well, a big gang to millions of terrorists, followers, and sympathetics who wish to rule the world in the name of Islam.
@ Travis-1944,
She may represent peace and everything else but she will be a threat to all Muslims. For that she will be hunted for the rest of her life along with those that believe the way she does. Its sad Muslims treat women the way they do but if you think things are different for women in the United States you probably haven't been to a church lately. Pick any one and you'll find they all treat women as needing to answer to man rather than God. It's only our Government that says women are equal, churches do not and will not every agree! I wish her the best but until she becomes a human being rather than a follower of men she will never be free.
Confussed (odd name BTW). This young girl is a Muslim, in a Muslim country, with a Muslim family, and was protected by her Muslim community (many tried to shield her from gunfire with their own bodies). She, and her supporters, represent true Islam. Indonesia is the most populous Muslim country in the world, how many terrorist come out of there? Once again, judging many by the actions of a few is ridiculous.
Tutankhamoun, yes, the Cartels actually do their acts in the name of Christianity (their version). They actually have a patron saint of drug runners, along with a patron saint of death, that they worship and sacrifice (including human sacrifice) to in order to shield themselves from the enemy. They actually kidnap, kill, and eat virgin girls in a belief that their Saint's will give them special powers and make them bulletproof (look up NarcoSatanicos). They claim to be excellent Catholics, and generally have tattoos of Saints and Crosses all over their bodies.
I think we can all agree that these people are horrible and have a twisted version of Christianity... similar to how we can say that terrorists are horrible and have a twisted version of Islam.
Don't try to attack Islam saying that it's the only religion that advocated taking out non-believers, do the Crusades ring a bell?
Travis, the fact that she's forced to cover her head shows that her religion is oppressive. She will NEVER be able to very far unless she leaves the muslim world. She is by definition of her religion subhuman. Just look at the laws of any Islamic nation.
This little girl has done more to undermine the Taliban than Bush ever did...
Meanwhile, the Taliban extremists are somewhere brushing up on their "shoot little girls in the head at point-blank range marksmanship" following this terrible embarrassment to their "manhoods"... Not exactly the kind of martyrdom they usually get all yippy-skippy over.
Show me one strong and intelligent young woman with dreams of a future and I'll show you a thousand Talibani freak-boys huddling fearfully in a cave.
At least the Taliban usually carry weapons and can be targeted for physical action... Unlike those Westboro freaks, which aren't a far sight better but remain "protected" from reactions to their own voluntary actions... Personally, because they are clearly clowns, I think we should shoot them out of a cannon in a travelling circus show... One at each stop until we run out of them.
New Gawker, why don't you ask Orthodox Jewish males if they believe their head coverings are oppressive? Why not ask all sikh's if their turbans are oppressive? Many people of many religions feel that wearing a head covering in deference to their God is a way for themselves to feel closer to a higher power and remember to keep their God's principles in mind. She is not by definition sub-human. By the way, she rocks the head-covering quite well.
If you want to talk about Burkah's and other full body coverings (or full face veils), you can. But know that those are distortions of their representative religions, enforced by insecure men. Never in Islam was a Burkah mandated... once again, you judge others based on the actions of a few.
P.S. Enjoy kneeling in church this Sunday and having to go and confess your sins to another man... sounds pretty oppressive.
I know the world is a harsh and unforgiving place. I know that the taliban will probably kill more young girls who speak out, and that Islam has it's share of fanatics just like Christians, Jews, Hindus, etc. But for a brief second, even a minute or two, I have hope. Whether you like to be called God, Allah, or Yahweh, please look after the innocent, including Malala. Amen.
New Gawker has a valid point. If she goes back to pakistan then she will be held back for being a women. The country still is run on a hard religious line. But you all must realize that oppression of women runs in almost all of the major religions. Heck even the Jews deny women the right to go to the wailing wall as they see it fit for men only. And catholics won't let women be priest (at least it would look better if they get caught screwing an alter boy) and they won't let priest get married.
Anything posted on Banistan/Hateistan/Killistan can also end up in Deleteistan!
Up, up Malala and likes of her!
Down, down seventh century bigoted Sunni Islamic haters and killers with different labels like Taliban, al Qaida, Boko Haram, MB, Salaffi and others!
She isn't forced to cover - it's a personal choice. It's the same as a Prayer Cap for the Amish - Amish women have their head covered at all times. If it's inside, they wear an organza cap, if it's outside they wear a bonnet, although they CAN wear an organza cap outside too. Mennonites wear some sort of headcovering - bonnet, organza prayer cap, or a doily-like prayer covering. Catholic women used to wear veils in church until the 60's, Observant Jewish women wear veils in Temple. Amish men wear hats, Jewish men wear yarlmulkes, and the orthadox Jewish men wear hats. Orthadox Jewish married women wear scarves or veils - and are also very modest. Observant Muslims can wear pants, as long as their arms and legs are covered, and they aren't dressing seductivly (tight pants, plunging necklines) - because what they are doing is dressing modestly. Not all Muslim women veil - and in countries that give women the choice to cover or not, there are still some who do despite (as in the US, UK, and France) the opportunity for harassment because of their faith.
Thank-you for your incredible bravery, Malala. I will never forget you. My hope is for your future and the future of women and children everywhere to live safely in peace and freedom.
I've always wondered about that sentiment. I hope for the future of everyone - inclusive. "God Bless America"? Why not "God Bless Everyone"?
Yes SDN, by all means Yes. WHATS WRONG WITH US PEOPLE??? Why can't we seperate that which is from that which is not divine. Why must we continue to exert our own or someone else's will over each other. The good books only help us to find that divine connection within us all. But we must turn towards and not away. When will we pause, or perhaps shudder, at the thought that someone will do what we say. Take a look at "TedTalks: FAITH FATE or FEAR; Leslie Hazleton: On Reading the Koran", on Netflix streaming or the web, to see something divine. God Bless You All, Everyone of You.
"Good luck Malala"
This brave young lady should never go back home. T
hose a--holes will try again to kill her. Also, bring the troups home from that place. One American life is not worth that whole country.
The world is with you and they wish you all the best. All I hope is that before this is done 10,000 taliban scum bags end up with a bullet in their heads. May they all burn.
Not enough. Putting bullets on so many is too expensive and not worth the troubles.
Just bomb all seventh century Islamist barbaric and beastly mad nuts' areas and be done with them once for all!
my very best wishes to Malala for a full recovery... may she be successful in her quest for the freedom of women and children in her country and thru-out the middle east....may God bless her...
I've seen her (before she was shot) speak. I've seen her and her dad interviewed. Whenver children....even at her age....put themselves out there at risk (in her location it was considered risky for girls even to go to school and Malala didn't just go she vocally brought attention to the problem) I wonder if they would if the parent wasn't pushing them or at least they do what they do to please the parent that they look up to and love
You always here about Malala and her dad, no her mom. Dad is an educator. In the film Malala said she'd wanted to be a doctor but her dad had said she should be a politician because she could change things more easily.
I hope she will do as much or as little, after getting shot, as she feels like and not feel she has to do anything because of expectations of her father or society.
Many people after her experience would want to lay low. I hope we allow her that if she needs to.
Anyone who will take a stand against violence without violence is a true hero. Malala is my hero.
Amen, jvtech!!!
Since the birth of Islamic cult, it has not happened.
In Banistan/Hateistan/Killistan, Malala and her family will not be safe and survive for more than five years.
So it is wishful thinking or hope against hope!
I hope the UK offers the family asylum. This child has great things to give the world.
In the meantime it was good to hear that the Pakistani government found a good solution to keeping her safe for at least the next 3 years. Appointing her father to a British post was a great idea and good move on thier part. I'm still amazed at the level of recovery she's experiencing - I think most people expected that she wouldn't make it, or would be severely disabled after such an event. Malala is one very strong and determined young lady!
apparently even the Taliban assasin was bad at their job. She was shot point blank. Turned out the bullet didn't even penetrate her brain...it travelled under he skull.
Obviously she does have some nerve damage (you can see her mouth droops on one side). We don't know how her speech is but she walks fluidly and unaided so that is good.
The Talibans worst nightmare. Young, smart, and represents everything good they are not.................
The Taliban's worst nightmare. Young, smart, and... female.
They can't stand this. I hope security is tight on this girl. I'm sure she has a price on her head.
They already had a price on her head and it would not matter is she were a man. So what's your point??
She is Islams worse nightmare.
My point, IXLR8, is that the Taliban hates women in general. Look at how they are treated around the world.
And they hate even more a courageous, brave, intelligent woman willing to stand up to them.
They are ignorant as camels. Worse than the dung of a camel.
Got it?
Yup, you basically said it all with your thinking other people are crap. Look in the mirror if you can.....
young smart...and FEMALE
what you are missing about the gender issue is that SHE WAS SHOT BECAUSE SHE WAS FEMALE and dared to want to go to school. Taliban closed all girls's schools in her area and banned girls from going. Their cultural belief is that women do not deserve an education or to determine their own future.
She spoke out for right of girls to go to school. They targetted her because she spoke out against anti Female policies and was Female herself
that is why we added "female" to the "young and smart". That she is female and got all this attention to her cause and survived their assasination attempt no doubt will irk them even more
Duh, not many missed this. Some can only see one tree in a forest.
Malala is a very lucky, and very strong young woman, and I hope she finds safety, education and happiness in the very near future.
I also think that Malala is a person before she is a FEMALE. I am a person before I'm a man. I hope that any good I do in this life is recognized for the person I am
I think some of the comments brought the same responses as "Women's Rights". This, by definition, promotes exclusive, preferencial assignment of rights. Exactly the same could be said for "Men's Rights", "Gay Rights", "Latino Rights". I have a real problem with any hint of preference when it come to rights. Equal rights, no more, no less.
One other thing that occurred to me is the level of hate/fear the Taliban and other fundamentalists have for education. Small wonder that much of the Muslim world ruled by these cretins lives in mud huts. Having a 7th Century mentality, and believing they will forcefully overwhelm the 21st Century World pretty well describes the fantastical/fanatical delusions for which they live and die.
Maybe I'm just a little short on hate..............
Makes you wonder how mankind ever got OUT of the 7th century. Interestingly enough, there WAS a time when the Muslims were the only enlightened people in the world. Unfortunately, when you do not adapt to a growing change, you tend to become outdated. I'm surprised that there isn't a more "modern" prophet to come in to update Islam. Surely if they sent all those other ones in that short time frame (Mohammed came about 600 years after Jesus who was also considered a prophet), it seems that 1400 years would have been enough time for a newer prophet to come - unless one did and they didn't recognize him or her.
Nobel Peace prize ? She's got my vote!
And mine as well. Bless you, Malala, and your family. Hang in there.
The very best to you brave Malala!!!!!
May any Taliban pig who even thinks of harming you or your family be struck by lightning.
Hans: Or by a flying pig.
Allah has spoken - death to the Taliban.
At this rate, it will be death to Islam, sooner than Allah's own prediction
Yes, best of luck and hope for a full recovery.
But of course the US Taliban(US Police) injures by shooting/killing/car chasing 10- 12 people every day, so I am a little surprised she has become the "poster child" down there, we need someone like that here!
wow really
unbelievable
Yeah, we need some teenage girl to stand up for girls being allowed to go to school and not be shot for trying to learn...wait...girls do go to school in the US. Down there? Why would you be surprised people would look up to her?
And you apparently don't know much about what the Taliban stands for if you think they equal our civilian police...lol. You really think stopping people or chasing people who won't stop equals shooting little girls in the head for going to school? I know you are angry about things in your own life, but really...get a clue.
Americans who oppose Pell grants, and place roadblocks in the way of educating all students need to see how much they resemble the Taliban, who shot Malala! We can only compete in the world with a well educated populace!
Kent
Barrack Obama was the first President to cut Pell Grant Awards and set limitations on the number of Pell Grants any student may receive.
Well that's not true Kent. Apparently you did not get one. Try some other way to get educated.
Kent, if anyone is guilty of trying to destroy education in this country, it was the Bush administration. "No Child left behind"?!? What a crock.
Allowing state universities to be run as businesses? Why do you think tuition rose over 100% from 2000-2008? I paid $125 for my first semester of college at the University of Texas (where Bush couldn't attend...because his entrance scores were too low) in 1982, then when I returned to college in 1990 I paid $800 per semester after Reagan and Bush. From 1992 to 2000 there was a moderate increase, 20%, due to inflation, but in 2000 tuition went through the roof, almost a 100% increase (http://nces.ed.gov/fastfacts/display.asp?id=76). I don't think you can attend a college now for less than $2000 a semester for the least expensive schools out there, not including Books and fees.
Now that we're completely off topic.
Pell grants are nice, but school loans account for more US debt than credit cards, if you can believe it.
@Victor - Personally, I see wisdom in making that move.
I was in an art class during Winter 2012, and my class was full on the first few weeks. However, in the second half of the semester, only a handful of us remained. We were those who went to class to learn - not to stay for a certain period and collect money by gaming the system.
When I found out that this was the cause for their absence, I was flabbergasted. How can the feds allow this bull@!$%#? I think that the requirement for financial aid should be raised to only allow those who attend the entirety of their semester to receive their funding.
In fact, I'll go a step further - only give EXACTLY what is required for the courses one is taking that semester (along with any other expenses necessary), and nothing more. There are some who are dishonest in their intentions for that money, and they should not be allowed to have access to it without an honest intent to use it for what it was meant for.
---------------
Back to the article in question, no doubt Malala herself is proof that women have the skills and the power to succeed, they only need to channel the resolve to take that power and skill to the next level and DO SOMETHING with it! Far too often, humans feel like they cannot do something - here in America, we made people realize that if you set your mind to it, ANYTHING is possible (yes, even someone in a third world country can fulfill their dreams if they want to).
That said, +1 to the Pakistani Government for assigning her father to a foreign post - easy means to show the Taliban that you messed with the wrong princess. The British can protect her family, she can pursue the education she has long desire while on her recovery, and all three (Pakistani Govt, British Govt, and the Yousufzai family) can tell the Taliban "Go shove it!".
Best wishes and prayers for a speedy recovery, Malala!
The Crimson Cujo
EDIT - I want to add something to my statement about financial aid: if the student can come up with a legit reason (and show proof of it) that they were forced into absence by unforeseen circumstances, then they should be let off the hook. However, officials should keep an eye on repeat offenders. It's easy to fake @!$%# to game the system, as I said.
The most dangerous element against western freedoms and ideals is Islamo-Fascism. The Nazism of the 21st century.
It is time that progressives/liberals open their eyes to the religion/culture which they seem to defend at every turn.
Why do YOU Mr or Ms Progressive insist on defending such barbaric believes as.
women having zero civil liberties,
the mandates that all gays and lesbians be executed
and where slavery is legal ?
Please see this danger for what it is: a threat to the civil liberties and the very way of life which we live.
It is not only the Taliban or Hamas that commit and support murder and intolerance but The Muslim Brotherhood and even CAIR that must be held to task for supporting genocide and religious fascism.
Do not let the sacrifices of Malala and all those that came and went before be for not.
Being a woman, of course I support everything that Malala and all women in oppressive countries continue to achieve. They are some of the bravest people on earth.
But we have our own form of Taliban in this country. The religious "right" in this country continues to blame women having the vote and the right to determine when they become pregnant as the basis for their god bringing earthquakes and hurricanes to this country. If they have their way, contraceptives won't be covered with insurance (but apparently Viagra is a-ok), and a woman can die rather than have an abortion. It's only by women's (and the men who are supportive of us) continued vigilance that we will continue to have our freedoms.
Education is key for the average person to keep his/her rights, which is why extremists of all kinds do their best to suppress it. It's why we keep our finger in the pie of international relations. If we didn't fund these efforts, there would be more regression.
Blueunicorn - If I could, I would give you a thousand thumbs up.
Also, why do so many posters think that liberals are constantly defending radical Islam? I can assure you that we are as disgusted by their actions and beliefs as everyone else.
Why do you think Progressives oppose dispatching taliban to hell ? Where have you read that ? Stop believing all the bull@!$%# that faux feeds you.
Best wishes and best of luck to Malala Yousufzai and her family.
If there is any justification for ousting the Taliban in Afghanistan, she is the guiding light. The Taliban and Al Qaida are a growing cancer and their actions in regard to the last decade have justified that.
I sincerely hope that Malala makes a complete recovery, she is a beautiful young lady, who has more character than many of the people in the US I continue to fight for. Her survival and recovery overshadows the evil the Taliban and Al Qaida represent.
Amazing. This young lady spoke up for young women to simply have equal rights and get an education...
And she with her miracle and strength ended up doing the educating to a lot of us herself...
Hope she contiues to a full recovery...
As long as she doesn't try to be a teacher:
"Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection. But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence. For Adam was first formed, then Eve. And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression" (1 Timothy 2:11-14).
?????????
Syn ......Even though this was in the "New Testament" .....I am sure that even Jesus himself would now disagree ....
Any evidence? Or are you projecting your own view on Jesus?
What Syn Holliday is saying that is that he an oppressive male who has the mentality of a rapist because his thinking is that of the woman being allowed to learn but only learn where others cannot see her learn because man fears the intelligence of the woman to be strong and powerful instead of being merely a body for him to have children with.
This is the real meaning behind 1 Timothy 2:11-14
The reason why Eve is presented in such a way is that Adam could not restrain his sexual desires for Eve and instead of looking the fool to all those around him he painted Eve as being being corrupt just to save his own image. Timothy is also portraying Eve as being corrupt because he could not subjagate Eve to be his unwitting breeder.
Saying that Adam was first formed is not possible based upon the science of creation. Man would not have known how to create woman because man must first come from woman in order to be man....unless of course god was actually a woman and created Adam and then Eve.
Perfection can only come from creation itself and most if not all that is present in a religious text is backwards because most religions are based on man creating woman.
If true then man must have been A sexual or having both reproductive organs in order to understand creation thus making the first man actually a female.
If god was so perfect in his creation then why did he give man nipples like that of a woman? Men don't need them for anything so the addition of such a body part would not have been present in the mindset of god...if god had actually been a man.
Sounds to me like Timothy was an abusive man likening a woman to being nothing more than a rock to do as he pleases with.
I suppose I do not have any evidence ......Just a feeling I have. Have you spoken to him on the issue of how women should be treated? This view is archaic at best.......
Syn, if you believe what you are posting shouldn't you shut your mouth while the men are talking?
dwighthuth ............"the science of creation" ??
dwighthuth - I'm an atheist.
AndrewWoody - Since I am the husband, I can speak.
"Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience, as also saith the law. And if they will learn any thing, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is a shame for women to speak in the church" (1 Corinthians 14:34-35).
dwighthuth - I'm an oppressive male?
"Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as it is fit in the Lord" (Colossians 3:18).
"Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing." (Ephesians 5:24).
OK, I get it you are just messing with the Christians.
Syn......If we are to begin quoting scripture.....It will be a long day. I could post just as many examples to the contrary. This article is about a courageous young women .....who stood up for herself and what she believes in. Lets just leave it at that ....
and Andrew ....yes he is ....
Syn, first of all, that verse was in reference to women in that particular city teaching in a particular church at a particular point in time. Second, I'm sure that Malala is not looking to teach in a church.
Hahahaha--while this was ticking away, I got to read things that others just posted--yes, indeed you are messing with the Christians, Syn--I am a Christian, and I gotta admit that when I realized that you are an atheist messing with those of us who take those particular verses literally for this day and age, well, I had to laugh..:)
I apologize, I don't think my point was made very clear in my initial post. I was pointing out that some people here will quickly shake their fingers at male oppression in other cultures while at the same time they teach their own kids to follow a book that is filled with male oppression.
"Kill every male among the children, and kill every woman who has known man by lying with him. But all the young girls who have not known man by lying with him, keep alive for yourselves." (Num 31:17-18).
PValdes - I agree, she is very courageous. I support equality, but I think it first starts in ceasing to pass the ancient practice onto the kids in our own country.
Good you explained Syn! I thought you were one of these sickos who try to justify every miserable deed by quoting the 'holy' books.
Syn.... I have gone to church quite a bit in my lifetime......I have yet to hear any pastor preaching the above mentioned scripture to children. There many things in the bible that are no longer in "practice". This is usually something the individual discovers on their own. I did.....For the record .....I totally understood your intention with your initial post.
Actually PValdes it is still preached in American churches. I attended a wedding at a Four Square church where most of the ceremony was about a wife needing to bow to her husband's wishes and to regard him as the lord in his home with lots of Bible quotes to support it. My friend and I just kept looking at each other with WTF*** in our expressions. Didn't walk out but thought about it.
But the point is a good one. We tend to condemn other religious groups/cultures for having such awful traditions that are often based in religious writings. The truth is that in the US many do follow teachings that aren't very woman friendly and that don't demand equality. Really, whether they are practiced by everyone in that group or not, they haven't usually be totally condemned and there are some who will do these things because a book says it. Maybe not all people here do all the things in the Bible or whatever other book someone follows, but people pick various amounts out that they personally choose to embrace, and yes, there are people who do pick some violent and nasty parts to still follow.
So the general population or some of the population in many countries might not be doing horrible things, but some groups are. It's the same way here, but not so obvious or extreme (well, sometimes here it is pretty extreme as well).
I believe that every religion/fanatic will bend the "bible" of their choice to suit their own needs and to relive their guilt over doing what they know is wrong. I have been raised Catholic, I was 8 years old when the priest told me " When you pray at home, GOD can hear you, When you pray at church GOD can hear you." I, being only 8 and a PIA like ALL 8 year old can be, kept asking him " Then why can't I go out to the middle of the wood's and pray? Why do I have to come to church?" He refused to give me an answer, when he finally got sick of me asking "Why", he called my mom and said, and I quote, " Please come get your daughter and don't bring her back." I was kicked out my church at 8 for being a child. All he had to say was" Well you could go to the wood's, but then I wouldn't see you every Sunday". I would have been happy and still believe in organized religion. Now I consider myself "spiritual" not religious. Plus let's face it the Catholic religion is the BIGGEST abuser of all. They started wars, they didn't lend support to stop Hitler, they even elected a EX NAZI soldier as the Pope(Benedict 16Th). How many religion's have their own zip code, police force, post office, they don't have to follow the law's of ANY country! Vatican City is it's own country, does anyone besides me see a problem with this? Just because the church can "sugar coat" anything they get away with it. ALL religion's have their problem's, and fanatic's. What we need to support is the one voice that cries out " I WILL CHANGE THIS". Just like Malala!
blugenm...OMG someone who agrees with me about the Catholic Church! It needs to be dismantled and the hierarchy prosecuted for their crimes against humanity. One point, though, Benedict was not a nazi soldier, he was a child during WWI. He was a member of the Hitler Youth, but that was a requirement for Christian boys. Believe me, this does not make me hate this pedophile-supporter any less, but I wanted to set the record straight.
PValdes - I think that's the problem, they don't preach that from the pulpit, but then they claim the Bible as "God's Word" and declare the Book morally infallible. It's sort of the "let's hook them, then we can explain those ignored parts later when they stumble upon them, but by that time they're already committed and won't be likely to question our weak apologist explanations."
For those who don't believe the Bible as the infallible Word of God, what is your belief based on? If the Bible has been corrupted, which part is corrupt? What is becomes is just a self-created religion, people speaking for God or Jesus, people cherry picking what parts of the Bible are legitimate and which are corrupt. In other words, we are using our own judgment of morality to determine which parts are ok and which are not. We've basically turned it into our own individual religions based on our own preferences.
So if we are the final judges of what is moral or immoral, then why the need for organized religion?
Timothy is the "new" Testement that Christians believe, right?
Glad I am not a Christian if so...this doesn't apply to me!
It might be a good idea to stop repeating this story...I think it will make her a more coveted target for the animals that tried to kill her the first time.
I concur ...
I see what you are saying. But there is another possible result--that the more she is talked about and made known and loved throughout the world, the more damage the Taliban would do to themselves if they tried to kill her again. Hopefully they see that they would be killing themselves if they did that and so will leave her and her family alone.
Sadly...I don't think the Taliban have the mental capacity to think that far ahead.
Oops, I replied to you, whynot, but it posted my reply as #47.
Unfortunately, you might be right about that, but one can always hope........
Give HER the NOBEL PRIZE. This is One Courageous Girl !!!! The Taliban can go SHOVE IT. They are the cowards of the WORLD. And this GIRL is the HERO of the WORLD. She represents the HUMAN RACE in all its GLORY. TO BE FREE TO THINK GOOD and NOT BAD !!!!
What an amazing heart she must have !!!!!!
Survived a "in favor of school" shooting. The Nobel Prize is a good idea. She's actually earned one.
The Taliban make martyrs of theirselves gloryfying their own deaths with diamonds and virgins.
What the Taliban doesn't realize is that they are blowing theirselves out of existence because with every Taliban suicide bomber that martyrs other Middle Easterners ten thousands more descend from upon high to smite them and promote equality.
The more that the Taliban attack and kill the more power that the Taliban gives to their enemies. The less that the Taliban attacks and kills gives twice as much power to those that look to dominate.
AndrewWoody....you wrote "P.S. America is no where close to being broke as we have a political problem not a financial one." Oh my.....do you have ANY clue what is going on in this country in terms of finances? Obviously not!! Our national debt now exceeds 16 TRILLION dollars and getting larger, projected to exceed 20 TRILLION dollars within the next 4 years. The Congressional Budget Office has made it INCREDIBLY clear that the projected revenue this country garners through taxes, etc. will not be nearly enough to offset our expenditures. We are borrowing trillions of dollars from foreign governments to pay off that debt (much of that borrowing is from China, who is now our biggest manufacturing competitor). The PROPOSED tax inxreases on the wealthy will not even make a dent in offsetting our expenditures (again , the Congressional Budget Office has made that known) and those are the PROPOSED tax increases which are less than the actually tax increases that the Seante and Congress just agreed too (the Fiscal Cliff agreement).
Now, before you start with partisan commentary about anyone's political affiliations, this is not a democratic or republican issue, but a NATIONAL issue. These are facts which, for whatever reason, you have chosen not to see. Well, you and EVERYONE, please WAKE UP and pay attention. America is in a severe and dire financial situation which has a very strong potential to totally disrupt and virtually destroy America's economy. If this spending is not brought under control, the American economy will be severely, and negatively, impacted!
I simply meant that our Government is broke, not America. Their is a difference. Our political issues are man made while America the country is full of wealth, lands, gold, crops, oil, and Americans to name a few. Ever told a creditor to get bent? At the end of the day we could just tell China to go @!$%# its self as we don't NEED anything from them, we have just gotten used to their cheap products which we could produce ourselves.
He is right. There is plenty of money. The hungry could be fed, people could have a place to live, and the country could be solvent. There is money, but it's not where it could be used for what is needed. There is plenty of money behind the scenes, but just not where it will do good.
I do see your point, Andrew, but I also have to ask--who owns those resources? And how much of that money is offshore?
We the People ultimately own those resources. Money is man made, land, oil, gold, are real and at the end of the day, We the People own this country.
I am sorry but you cannot just tell China to go @#$ itself over our debt. If you think you can do that without any consequence you are totally ignorant of the world of high finance.
Didn't say their wouldn't be consaquences, just said we could. What do you think would happen?
What would happen ? Well first time the US defaults on its debt obligation, the USD will lose its coveted position as the world's reserve currency.
T-bills will lose their value overnight. Bond will become worth less than the paper they are printed on. Countries will stop accepting dollars as payment causing a stop to international trade.
A worldwide financial meltdown will follow making real the end times scenario predicted in bible.
Bless you young lady .......you have the heart of a LION !

Praise the Lord for allowing Malala to survive an assassination attempt by the taliban. It is my hope that Malala will continue her work as an advocate for girl's education in the world. May a million Malala's rise up to push girls in every country to strive to attain their goal of receiving education. Taliban is an evil organization who deprives freedom and progress. Taliban's attempt to murder Malala clearly shows to the world that it is truly a devil's organization.
my hope is that she wants to continue this work
I worry she will feel pushed by society to continue and also by her father who though seemingly very kind and loving, does steer her some. I saw it in a video shot before the assination attempt...she said she'd wanted to be a DOctor but her dad told her it was better to be a politician because she could impact more people that way.
They interviewed both her dad and her at length. I felt she did things because she loved her dad. No doubt she believes girls have the right to go to school but I hope she doesn't feel pressured . If she didn't want to continue (many people wouldnt' after nearly dying from it) it doesn't seem like she will feel she can stop because of public expectations and possiblly expectations of her dad. Even if he doesn't try to pressure her it's obvious both that he is close, the ideas are from him, and that he is a much more forceful person by temperment than she is...she comes across in interview as a very gente person
these were my impressions anyway
Malala, may He who created us all protect you and your family, and bless you all the days of your life!
Taliban, your collective of warped minds is obvious!
