Church of England ends ban on gay bishops

The room stand to applaud outgoing Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams as they pay farewell tributes to him during a meeting at the General Synod of the Church of England, at Church House in central London on Nov. 21, 2012.

The Church of England has lifted a ban on gay male clergy who live with their partners from becoming bishops on condition they pledge to stay celibate, threatening to reignite an issue that splits the 80-million-strong global Anglican community.

The issue of homosexuality has driven a rift between Western and African Anglicans since a Canadian diocese approved blessings for same-sex couples in 2002 and U.S. Anglicans in the Episcopal Church appointed an openly gay man as a bishop in 2003.

The Church of England, struggling to remain relevant in modern Britain despite falling numbers of believers, is already under pressure after voting narrowly last November to maintain a ban on women becoming bishops.

The church said the House of Bishops, one of its most senior bodies, had ended an 18-month moratorium on the appointment of gays in civil partnerships as bishops.

The decision was made in late December but received little attention until the church confirmed it on Friday.

Gay clergy in civil partnerships would be eligible for the episcopate - the position of bishop - if they make the pledge to remain celibate, as is already the case for gay deacons and priests.

"The House has confirmed that clergy in civil partnerships, and living in accordance with the teaching of the Church on human sexuality, can be considered as candidates for the episcopate," the Bishop of Norwich Graham James said.

Church of England votes against allowing women bishops

"The House believed it would be unjust to exclude from consideration for the episcopate anyone seeking to live fully in conformity with the Church's teaching on sexual ethics or other areas of personal life and discipline," he added in a statement on behalf of the House of Bishops.

The church teaches that couples can only have sex within marriage, and that marriage can only be between a man and a woman.

Conservative outcry
Britain legalized civil partnerships in 2005, forcing the church to consider how to treat clergy living in same-sex unions.

The church ruled that a civil partnership was not a bar to a clerical position, provided the clergy remained celibate, but failed to specifically address the issue of when the appointment was of a bishop.

In July 2011 the church launched a review to deal with this omission, at the same time imposing the moratorium on nominating gays in such partnerships as bishops while the study was conducted.

The review came a year after a gay cleric living in a civil partnership was reportedly blocked from becoming a bishop in south London.

It was the second setback for the cleric, Jeffrey John, who would already have become a bishop in 2003 but was forced to withdraw from the nomination after an outcry from church conservatives.

Rod Thomas, chairman of the conservative evangelical group Reform, said the church's move on gay bishops would provoke further dispute.

"It will be much more divisive than what we have seen over women bishops. If you thought that was a furor, wait to see what will happen the first time a bishop in a civil partnership is appointed," he told BBC television.

Even small progress is good progress, I guess. Good on them. Maybe in a couple of years they can come back to the women's question and do the right thing there too.

You can live together but have to remain celibate? That's not progress. That's like telling a kid "You can have all the candy you want, but you can't eat any."

funny you should use the kid and the candy analogy, when its the pedophile priest who lure the children with candy.

let these priest have spouses, nowhere in the bible does it say holy people have to be celibate, only these idiots and there stupid rules (married to god) honestly do you think that IF god existed and forbids these terrible sex acts on children committed by the priests that are married to there god HE WOULD'VE STRUCK THEM DOWN WITH FIRE AND BRIMSTONE !

if the priest's dont give a @!$%# about god than he doesn't exist ! last year the pope admits last year to other life beings in universe to stay ahead of the science curve, why would he make such a heretic claim that just 100 yrs ago he would have been assassinated in Rome !

the church is a business that doesn't have to pay taxes and can do and say pretty much what they want. like no birth control for all minorities, why because you keep pumping out kids that keep pumping out kids that keep monies flowing to the church, who by the way will let you do anything you want (sin) and they will absolve you as much as you want ! talk about no consequences to worry about I'll just go to confession and can start all over again, just leave your donation in the box !

Until around 1248CE, Priests were allowed to marry and have families. And then the peasants and priests began collecting wealth. Not much, a silver spoon here, a fancy goblet there, but for the times, it was wealth. The Church got very concerned because if the Priest gathered wealth, to whom would he leave it when he died? His wife and family or Mother Church??? Well, that was easily settled, ban marriage in the Priesthood!

In the bible Jesus is quoted as saying that divorcees that remarry are adulterers and marrying a divorced person is adultery. Yet all christian churchs either welcome divorcees or like in the catholic church just pretend the first marriage never happened (hard to do with the kids in the church and school but they do it) Hypocrite much?

If priests are remain celibate, than so should these homosexuals who seem intent on forcing their way into every fiber of the church. Abide by the rules or get the heck out. No more special privileges who those who choose to sodomize each other.

Except for the FACT that this article is about priests in the Church of England (Anglican) and they can get married if they are men and want to marry a woman or visa versa. Celibacy is not a Anglican thing except for gay priests and ony some branches. BTW your Catholic church has over 200 married priests (most if not all have children) they were all defectors from the Church of England that left due to gays being made priests and women being made priests.

I will pray for all of you whom have mocked the word of the lord and Jesus walked with all of us who have sinned, in his devine Mercy we must find Grace to love and there are those who can and are leaders of the Church, this is just wrong Please see this.

Please do not mock the teaching of the orgininal text of the Greek Orthodox, Syerian Orthodox, Coptic Orthodox and that of the Churches of the Asia-Minor of 349AD of Bys. Catholic Rite aka Eastern Orthodox, all of which are Brothers and Sisters of Roman Catholic's. Please take a stand for Peace, this is not right.

Someone, wrote hate statements again about DIVORCE in the Catholic Church, it is a very serious spiritual personal, only under certain guidelines , as written in the BIBLE< infidelity...and that of the obvious, Total beating aka Domestic Violence can an "annunalment" be granted, please understand it is very depp and all BIBILICALLY SOUND>>> Would God want a Man or Woman to "Harm His Temple"???? Hence Domestic Violence is not ever accepted...There is forgiveness, for Christ has asked all of us to do this, for if we don't God cannot work on us....

We must listen and not switch his words and not remove books out of the Bible that were there from 0-300 and cannoized by 349ad...They are there for a reason, we cannot marry same sex, nor preach as a disciple in a same sex marriage? How is it written or is it Bibilcally Sound I ask you and your church?

I will pray and continue to pray this stops and this de-sensitation to God's word stops , there is no GRAY area, it is Black and White, Jesus was not a wimp, he stood firm and stood up to those in the Temple and turned tables due to gambling in his Father's house, what on earth do you think he would do in this case???

It looks like the Church of England, which was started under very dubious circumstances (Henry VIII), is well on its way in the downward spiral into the toilet that results when the truths of the Holy Scriptures are ignored for the sake of human convenience.

Yes. And one day, that spiral will be complete, and finally humanity can fully be rid of the anchor around its neck that is organized religion. Spiritualism will be a completely individualized commodity, no different than one's preference in soda.

A wonderful future if I've ever heard of one.

I'm an Episcopalian (American Anglican) and can tell you that we adhere to Scripture, just not your right-wing fundaMENTAList interpretation of it. Also, people who say the Church of England originated from Henry VIII have an incomplete understanding of our Church's history, at best. The Church of England's relationship with Rome had been strained for centuries before Henry VIII. All his affairs did was give us an excuse to break away. If you are going to condemn homosexuality, you need to condemn wearing clothing made of two different fabrics, eating pork, and serving meat and dairy at the same table. Furthermore, the Bible speaks MUCH more about gluttony than it does homosexuality, yet you don't see all these lard a$$ fundaMETNALists preaching THAT do you?

WTF is all this talk about "sacred Scripture" and yet no one cites the New Testament commentary about homosexual acts being sinful and forbidden?

Yah, just like where are the anti-Church of England slanderous statements as though it was the Roman Catholic Church? And some of you boneheads need to realize there was no Church of England prior to the 17th century. And then the totally stupid/ignorant statement that "a mere 100 years ago a pope would have anti-science decrees" that would justify his assassination.

Lastly, the gay-lesbian agenda has repeatedly said their actions of homosexuality are "who they are (their genes)." There is no on/off gene switch for homosexuality -- it may lead to "tendencies" (just like some people have likings for alcohol, or sweets or pedophilia or infidelity, et al).

There is no such thing as a homosexual -- just people who engage in homosexual acts.

Well river, most people form a religious identity before they form a sexual identity. So they grow up with certain beliefs, and it can be quite distressing to find out later that they somehow fall short of them. For someone who actually believes in religion, it's not as simple as just switching to a different, more tolerant one, or giving it up altogether; it's a part of them that they don't want to let go of.

It's just a relief that the church has weakened significantly that it's decisions have to take the lifestyles of these individuals into consideration.

The vast majority of people follow to some extent the religion they were indoctrinated (or brainwashed, if you like) into as gullible children. Many, even when they see its countless flaws, will stick with it out of a sense of loyalty or guilt. Some will ditch the whole business, but others will still feel the strong need for some kind of "daddy's" approval and might switch religions to fill the gap, or find some demented cult appealing. For many people, being given all the answers is more soothing than living with unanswered questions.

Not true. Read Hebrews 10:25, where is says "Do Not to be forsaking the gathering together of ourselves - as some had the custom"...

or in the NIV version - "not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing",

So the Christians did and are still required to meet together regularly but as in those days as well as today, many ignore this command which will be to their detriment.

Part of the reason is because we believe that it's easier to affect change from inside rather than outside.

The Saints are to meet together often,to partake of the sacrament, thereby renewing their covenants. For their edification, encouragement and instruction, to join together in song and be more perfected in the ways of the Lord. To strength the weak and hear the pleasing word of God.

There are spiritual connections, or gifts that come to most of those practicing Christianity to the best of their abilities, versus, those who confess to not having any faith in religion or a God. Those who seek a connection to a higher source, a creator or being, will also feel such a bond. American Native Indians also have found a way to this connection, as have other religions. This "spirituality" will not be found by those who are not willing to pay the price to discover it. It does not come free, but requires some effort to discover and develop.

Hence, those who mock and condemn others for what they believe in, because they themselves have never experienced such a connection, must be willing to put forth their own effort, if ultimately they seek to really find out if God is real or not. For there is truly only one way to discover the answer. It is already known man has more than five senses. Developing the spiritual sense, can only be done by the person themselves. Those with a strong spiritual sense already know, they don't have to prove anything to those who scorn them. That isn't their job in life. They aren't required to answer any questions demanded by nonbelievers either, attacking them. They have better things to do with their time.

For those who are attacking only seek a confrontation. Rarely does one actually ever meet a person who is truly interested in pursuing understanding and knowledge. Rather it's almost always for more angles to better argue, tearing down another person's position.Debating groups are far more suited for such individuals. for they don't truly respect others opinons

GOD BLESS! 2 Corinthians 11 :13 For such men are false apostles, deceitful workmen, masquerading as apostles of Christ. 14 And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light. 15 It is not surprising, then, if his servants masquerade as servants of righteousness. Their end will be what their actions deserve. Romans 1 :24 Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. 25 They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator—who is forever praised. Amen.

26 Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones. 27 In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion.

28 Furthermore, since they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, he gave them over to a depraved mind, to do what ought not to be done. 29 They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips, 30 slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents; 31 they are senseless, faithless, heartless, ruthless. 32 Although they know God's righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them.

MRH--If you're going to live by those scriptures, then you ought to know something about them. Paul's letters were probably written in Greek. Have you read them in the original first century Greek or are you simply trusting some translator? Do all translations say the same thing? (Hint: no. The King James, Revised Standard and NIV are all different. For example, in two of the translations, Paul uses the terms "lusts of their hearts" and "dishonoring of their bodies" or "dishonor their own bodies." If he was talking about pro football players, that could well mean the lust for victory caused them to dishonor their bodies by risking injury.) Beyond that, in your NIV version, Paul does not spell out what "sexual impurity" consists of. Paul was a Roman citizen. If he had the common Roman morality, oral sex of any kind (even between husband and wife) would have been "sexual impurity." Let's face it. Your source is a guy who never married, who was (according to his testimony) celibate, had problems with women, and certainly did not have what most would call a healthy attitude toward sex. To Paul, sex was a weakness, a sin, not an expression of love. If you're going to base your life on the writings of that dude, then I feel sorry for you and especially sorry for your partner.

the entire New Testament was written in Greek and if you go back and translate it accordingly a person will get the TRUE words of our Lord that was spoken to the Apostiles. A person needs to read and study the Lords word and understanding of it will automaticly come to you, because that is His promise. I am not judging anyone because it is not my place to judge. The Lord IS real and He created all of us and wants us to follow His word. Jesus died for us so that our sins would be covered. I pray that you may find comfort when seeking the truth, and you will when you seek Him. God Bless <3

SF Accountant - God has not said that today's world is a modern day Sodom and Gomorrah but reasonable people can plainly see that it has become that way. God himself saw fit to destroy those cities because of their rampant homosexuality. In Malachi 3:6 God said " I am Jehovah; I have Not changed."...

So if he destroy S&G because of their homosexuality, and he said himself that his standards do Not change, then it is not difficult to understand that shortly he will again destroy those who are ignoring his standards.

If God is so offended by homosexuality that He'd destroy cities to stamp it out, I'm not sure what He's waiting for. I work in San Francisco and I see very little of God's wrath around here.

Perhaps "reasonable people" are the ones who aren't basing their life decisions on the fear that an immortal super wizard from the sky is going to turn them into salt?

Actually, it is not clear why God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah in the big book of fairy tales. Many biblical scholars believe it was because of the towns' inhospitality towards strangers, a grave offense in those times.

Well, technically, the bible only forbids homosexual ACTS (I think... I never read or studied it).

Feelings are just feelings, and really the primary point of religion is to shackle people and force them to restrain themselves anyway. So in a way, there's absolutely nothing preventing a gay person from being a Christian or even a Christian bishop if they're willing to shunt away their sexual identity for the sake of their religious one. I don't get it, but obviously there are people who want that, or this wouldn't be an issue.

If the word of God was wired in our brains, then no one would ever sin except for those "few poor wretches". I do not believe in God or need religion, but I think it's absurd to assert that the will of a divine being is etched into our DNA given the long and tumultuous history of mankind. Besides, if God's words are in your mind, how does that allow for self-reflection? How can you be wrong? Why are your opinions sometimes different from others that claim to be faithful? You've set an absurd standard for yourself and humanity.

Sorry but demanding essentially married couples to remain celibate for the sake of religion does not seem like a workable longterm solution to me. Since modern Christians already ignore most of the laws of the Old Testament, I suspect they'll eventually get word from their God that they can also skip the sections on homosexuality.

                                  Why isn't it workable?

Celibacy is just a requirement for the job if you want to be a bishop. If you're not willing to go that far, then you can't be a bishop. I don't see anything strange or wrong about that, and as I suggested, whether your celibate against women or men is pretty irrelevant.

At long last the Bishop from the planet Gelgamek can be included in the Church of England. For years the Gelgameks have operated in the shadows at the Vatican, being representatives of the Roman Catholic Church on their planet. The Bishop has always been a strong supporter of the buggering of boys, as the gelgamek vagina is allegedly three feet wide and filled with razor-sharp teeth.

So, if a priest lives with an opposite sex partner and they are not married, does that mean that they too have to remain celibate? Apparently the Church of England states "the church teaches that couples can only have sex within marriage, and that marriage can only be between a man and a woman." That suggests the same rules apply to opposite-sex couples who aren't married as it would to same-sex couples. So let's hope they put their teachings into practice in a non-discriminatory manner for all unmarried couples who aspire to be a deacon, priest, bishop or archbishop in the Church of England.

As far as I'm aware, the requirement is that bishops must remain celibate. There are different rankings within the church, and I'm guessing that most, if not all, of the higher ones require celibacy, which means no sex with either gender.

Whether or not you're celibate against men or women kind of seems like a moot point, doesn't it?

If straight priests can have sex with their wives then gay priests can with their partners. Anything less is ridiculous

Who ever said that this was a true church? It's just a bunch of formalism. God will damn homosexuals who do not repent and abandon that lifestyle to the lake of fire forever. It doesn't matter how stupid a "church" is. Basically, the "church" doesn't have anything to offer the world anymore, because it is like the world. God has abandoned this so called "church." It is apostate. It is cursed. It does not follow Jesus Christ. It hates Jesus Christ. Satan is ruling it. And Satan is laughing and rejoicing in this spectacle, and at this article, and at those who applaud this decision. "But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore
the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness!" Matthew 6:23. There is simply no excuse for the stupidity of these people who made this decision. They are dumber than turtles.

Satan isn't that bad a guy, once you get to know him. Why don't you give him a chance, Richard?

The Prophet LOT fought against SODOMY. The Prophet JESUS came to FULFILL the LAW and the LAW is against sodomy. Modern, so-called "Christians", so-called followers of Jesus, fight to accommodate sodomy. What is to become of the Christians? Are they the people of GOD? They are ever changing the Laws of God to suit their desires.

These new bishops should all buy sailboats with a center cockpit for those pooping seas and get Wind Bugger wind powered generators.

Apparently the bible is the last place the church looks for direction. My KJV( a British bible) says men that lie with men are not to be given any position. So what do they teach in their churches, the bible or popular opinion?

I suggest anyone who believes in God, go back to school and pay more attention in science class. The earth isnt 6000 years old. And man evolved. They have found the Skeletons. And more than one. And no they werent little people or space aliens, they were us.

There may be a superior being behind our existence, somehow, someway.. But nothing man has wrote in any book, has anything to do with it, if thats the case. And that superior being sure doesnt care who we sleep with. All that BS is man made.

Man likes to look for scapegoats. History is full of minorty groups who the majority have vilified as evil or bad, claiming they will make the gods angry. Its hokus pokus.

Mankind needs to grow up and get its crap together.

"They have found the Skeletons" --- Of What? Monkeys? And the artists added the FLESH and the features to make them look more human. LOL!

see the problem is you have gleaned your opinion from "school" where they brainwash the masses into believing that evolution is real. For shame. May I suggest a little critical thinking here?

So, right, uncommoncure .... people should get their knowledge from churches, where critical thinking is encouraged and dissenting opinions are welcome and respected.

"School" is where critical thinking is taught, cure. Not churches. The entire church is a structure dedicated to the brainwashing of humanity by teaching a strict regimen of how to live one's life under threat of damnation by a poorly understood power. The entire foundation of religion is "faith" which is by definition belief without proof. And you preach "critical thinking"?
