Cat caught smuggling contraband into Brazil prison

Brazilian authorities captured a cat that was entering a prison with a saw, bits for hand drills, a mobile phone, batteries and charger. The cat belonged to the prisoners and was frequently taken by relatives to their homes, returning to the prison on its own.

The cat came back, it just couldn’t stay away.

And when it did come back on New Year’s Eve, a guard standing watch at a prison gate in northeastern Brazil thought there was something unusual about the slender white kitty slipping by.

He alerted other guards who helped him to catch the feline, according to a statement by the federal prisons bureau, and they found that the cat’s torso was wrapped tight with contraband.

Specifically: Two small saws, two drills for concrete, a headset, a cell phone, a cell phone charger and three batteries.

The confiscated material could have allowed inmates to cut bars and dig tunnels, according to the statement, while allowing them to communicate with people on the outside. The cat, it appeared, belonged to the inmates and traveled between the prison and the homes of the inmates' families, who live in the area.

All 263 inmates at the Arapiraca prison are deemed suspects because, a prison spokeswoman told the Estado de Sao Paulo: “It will be hard to figure out who is responsible, as the cat does not talk.”

The spokeswoman said it was the first time a cat tried to smuggle in contraband since the prison was built in 2002.

The newspaper said the cat was not held at the prison and was instead transferred to the city’s animal shelter for veterinary care.

A cat slipped into a prison in Brazil but was intercepted by prison officials, who found a drill and saw taped to its body. TODAY's Jenna Wolfe reports.

These guys are being kind of rough on this cat, no?

If you've ever had a cat, you know that it was not happy about having all that tape being ripped from it. They are handling it correctly in order to keep from having their arms and bodies slashed by those claws.

Cats can be pretty dangerous. Their claws are quite sharp, they are extremely flexible, and their saliva is toxic. Can't blame the guards for being rough on the poor critter; the infection rate for cat bites is insane, and that cat was NOT happy.

You do what you have to do to keep yourself in one piece.

Better than a homing pigeon. The relatives knew the cat would go back to the prison so they loaded it up with a bunch of contraband. The relatives responsible better hope they were smart enough not to leave fingerprints on the things they taped to the cat or they may be joining their relatives in the prison.

The first guard at the gate didn't notice the cat was taped, but unusual? Poor eyesight?

The saliva isn't toxic precisely, as far as I know, but cat mouths (including, y'know, saliva) have a lot of bacteria, so a cat bite that breaks the skin can definitely make your day unpleasant.

And, cat saliva can be "toxic" to those who are alergic.

Cat's mouths are filled with quite a bit of bacteria. Worse then dogs, humans, etc. Just recently had to deal with a cat bite on another cat that blew up to larger then a golf ball sized abscess before breaking. Getting bit by a cat can also lead to infection in the lymph nodes of the arm. Also rather painful and can be dangerous. I can definitely understand why they're holding the neck and arms that way to avoid getting bit or scratched.

Really. In my past, cats have scratched and bitten me, but the most I suffered were welts on the skin, and maybe once in a while, some bleeding. Of course, the cats were properly vaccinated. How Brazil takes care of their animals is another question. Yes, in this instance, cats.

Only a cat in poor health can have a dangerous bite, though people that hate cats can imagine anything. Also, cats do not bite except in play when they will not bite through the skin. Unless they have been raised to play with people's hands. Or, unless they are feral and afraid of people.

Lastly, despite persistent warnings from cat haters, cats never attack people - unless they have been abused.

No, cats in good health can also have dangerous bites. Had to deal with a cat fight between two perfectly healthy cats and a cut on the back of one blew up to the size of a golf ball filled with puss. Even healthy cats dig in their litter box and lick things....

No well behaved cats at my house. My two Maine coon boys are too big to practice stealth smuggling into anything (total weight for both is about 30 pounds). They are pretty law-abiding, although I have my suspicions that when I find paw prints on my computer that they have been looking at kitty-porn.

If they would have just watched the cat it could have lead them directly to the owners. It would have gone back to who was feeding it at some point.

There may have been twenty or thirty convicts feeding it. Roaming cats are not loyal to one person/family, and prison can be pretty boring. The contraband would find its' way to the convict-in-charge, regardless of who the cat approached first.
