LASHKAR GAH, Afghanistan - A man wearing an Afghan army uniform shot dead one soldier from the NATO-led force in Helmand in the country's south, where mostly British and U.S. troops are based, officials said on Tuesday.
At least 63 NATO-led personnel were killed in 47 insider attacks across Afghanistan last year, far more than previous years, eroding trust between Afghan soldiers and their foreign counterparts as the coalition plans to withdraw most of its troops by the end of 2014.
In the latest attack, in Helmand's Gereshk district on Monday evening, a British soldier was killed and six more British soldiers wounded, police officials in Helmand told Reuters.
NATO's International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) confirmed in a statement that one of its personnel was killed by a man in an Afghan National Army uniform, but did not disclose the soldier's nationality.

Karzai will be in Washington soon, bitching. Let's send him home empty-handed and with all of his assets frozen. NATO has had enough of this POS.
Karzai has no power to fix this either way.
The real question is why is there now any Western presence there anyway? Why do Western governments feel they need to squander their country's resources and highly trained citizens trying to transform this country from the culture of 10,000 BC to the 21st century? It has little chance of working. For example: the US Army engineers discovered deposits of rare earth elements (elements used to manufacture high tech equipment like computers) in Afghanstan worth billions of dollars. Karzai's brother sold the mining rights to the Chinese for about $300,000,000 and took the money (probably to a Swiss Bank account). Now Western troops die to protect the Chinese mining company by keeping the area pacified. And Eisenhower's "military-industrial complex" doesn't want the wars to end. And what is the answer? "The answer is blowin' in the wind."
Off topic, I know, but is anyone else sick and tired of the obnoxious ads all over these articles?! Disgusting pictures of skin peeling off, diet fads, e-cigarettes.. at least put up an ad that's appealing or useful. No one is going to click on a picture of a woman peeling her old wrinkly skin off her face, like that's even real.
Pandora6,

Examples of not learning the BASIC FACTS:
What part of US Ally don't you understand. Keep abandoning US Allies and then see what you have left.
The US built up US Ally Afghanistan into a 20th Century Nation from the 1950s till the 1979 USSR 40th Army Occupation. After the 1990s Fundamentalist Islamic Taliban came into power they first massacred the 1980s Pro US Afghan Muhajeen, any suspected Collaborators to the Christians, Jews, Unbelievers, then unopposed the Fundamentalist Islamic Taliban destroyed anything at 20th Century Afghanistan that was "Non Islamic", "Western", "Modern".
Wrong, it was my Teams trained in US Military Asymmetric Mountain Warfare (Technical Mountain Climbing) that were spelunking into the thousands of miles of former Mines, Mineshafts, Mining Tunnels, etc. that located the "High Tech Mineral Wealth of Afghanistan" while searching for the Fundamentalist Islamic Taliban, Al Quada, Islamic Jihadists hideouts in the former Mines, and Mining Tunnels. Later on the CIA attached their Scientific Teams to my US Military Asymmetric Mountain Warfare Teams to verify the High Tech Minerals.
President Obama's FAILED Foreign Policies LOST the High Tech Mineral Wealth of Afghanistan, as the Fundamentalist Islamic Shia Republic of Iran told the Afghans they will negotiate the Mineral Wealth of Afghanistan (including the non High Tech Minerals) with the Ally of the Fundamentalist Islamic Shia Republic of Iran, the Chinese, China Metallurgical Group. This was also about the same time that the Fundamentalist Islamic Shia Republic of Iran told the Pakistanis NO More US Military Logistics Support Bases and MQ/RQ (Drone) Bases at Pakistan to support the United Nations Mission at Afghanistan. Even during the British Empire days the British knew that the Pakistanis Sea Ports, Bases, Khyber Pass, etc. were Mandatory to support any "British Adventures" at Afghanistan. Without these US Military Logistics Support Bases at Pakistanis the maximum UN, US, NATO Forces that can be supported is 30,000 (including International Aid Workers), so the US, NATO Military Forces must withdraw by 2014 and abandon US Ally Afghanistan again to be massacred by the Fundamentalist Taliban again (and don't tell me no, that is Fundamentalist Islamic Law, as Collaborators to the Christians, Jews, Unbelievers must be massacred to "Dwell in that Firey Place".). Saying no they won't is just like the dumbarse US Politicians that had us withdraw after Operation Cyclone, instead of helping US Ally 1980s Pro US Afghan Muhajeen rebuild 20th Century US Ally Afghanistan. As Senator Charles Wilson stated after Operation Cyclone and the Fundamentalist Islamic Taliban seizing power, after the US Abandoned US Ally 1980s Pro US Afghan Muhajeen to get massacred, "They were glorious and they changed the world... and then we f**ked up the endgame".
Making sh!t up Pandora6. Just like you don't know that the Billions spent here, were spent by President Obama's Political Appointees of the US Department of State, with these Billions NOT accessible by the US Military nor the Local Afghan Government. And it was President Karzai that originally requested that General McChrystal Investigate, then later General Petraeus, resulting in President Obama's Political Appointees Tendering their Letters of Resignation because they could not account for the Billions they spent.
These now Chinese locations, have had their own Security Forces.
Wrong per, was President FDR's US Military Industrial Complex, as created to get the US out of the Great Depression with the Sales of "War Materials" to England, France, Russia, China, etc. in exchange for tons of gold, silver, raw materials, etc.. As President FDR knew that US Consumerism would not get the US out of the Great Depression but the Sales of War Materials would and did in 1939 before US Entry into WWII 1941.
President Eisenhower criticized the US Military Industrial Complex, and was a Hypocrite as he was a product and beneficiary of the US Military Industrial Complex or he would have had to borrow wooden row boat and bolt action rifles to conduct the Normandy (D-Day) Invasions. And then failing the Normandy Invasion he would Never had become popular as a War Hero (General Eisenhower), First Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR), and later President.
As President he dismantled the US Military Industrial Complex, so that when he got the US involved in the United Nations Mission Korea, the US Military ended up getting massacred due to lack of US Military Equipment, Ammunition, Cold Weather Equipment, etc.. The First US Citizens of the US Military Blood on President Eisenhower's hands was of US Military Task Force Smith (not enough Anti Tank ammunition). It took years for the US Military Industrial Complex to be restarted, during that time the US Military was in constant defeats and retreats with many US Citizens of the US Military lives lost unnecessarily (running out of ammunition was common against human wave attacks of North Koreans and Chinese).
And your BIGGEST BRAIN FART, Pandora6, it is the almost hundred million overpaid too expensive "Fair and Living Wage" US Civilians that are employed directly and indirectly by "Defense", that do not want the Wars to end. While the 1% of US Citizens of the US Military are the only ones doing their "Civic Duty" (Civic Duty as "US Military Service is a Civic Duty" - Candidate Obama, 2008); while 92% of US Citizens have NEVER Served (First Lady Michelle Obama, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hmd9QwGZgxY).
President Obama, 2012, "A 10% Defense Budget Cut will result in a Million (US) Civilians becoming Unemployed".
You can blow me.
"At least 63 NATO-led personnel were killed in 47 insider attacks across Afghanistan last year, far more than previous years, eroding trust between Afghan soldiers and their foreign counterparts as the coalition plans to withdraw most of its troops by the end of 2014."
Karzai and Pakis are part of the problem.
They imagine that being ungrateful and backstabbing makes them smart!
Under these circumstances, many are asking the poor soldiers to carry all world's human rights manuals!
Karzai will neither be in Washington nor bitching.
Rather, he will join two former presidents of South Vietnam, Thieu(sic) and Ky (sic) , both puppets of the US government during the Vietnam War, in sunny Southern California. All three will have received travel and relocation expense to USA as part of their retirement package, courtesy of the US taxpayers, to supplement their upper middle-class mansions over looking the Pacific Ocean.
In the '60s, it was communism in South Vietnam. In 2001, its was terrorism in Afghanistan. The Big Lying Government has changed the names and places, but the American people are still fools.
Send Karzai back home in a zip lock bag !!!!
The flu season is in high gear around most of the country. Pity the poor fool did not get a flu shot this year. Oh well , sucks for him don't it ??
The applicant comes in and they strap him to a lie detector machine. If he does NOT ask for a thumb switch/trigger, he gets the job...
I see a small kink in the hiring plan.
A lot fewer headaches, david. Allies my a$$.
well since our military is SO invested in their men, they give them Velcro patches that have their last name stamped on them.....Velcro badges....I mean comon, military (not just ours) budget and cuts invited this.....idiots. Cut corners much?????invest in quality, much???pisses me off

I'd say a lot MORE headaches if our Military loses the option of having bases there. David can give you a list of reasons why things have gotten so difficult in Afghanistan and /or you can find plenty online or even go there for vacation and find out first hand:)
Then take a look at this page : h-ttp://www.worldatlas.com/webimage/countrys/asia/af.htm
Go to the bottom of the page all I see is a kid not much younger than me. Do to chance he is in a place so difficult at times that most of us would probably fold like lawn chairs. I'm sure many of the U.S. and NATO forces are really trying to make things better for the less fortunate.

Pay particular attention to his comments on the importance of education and democracy and why it is so hard to change things. Look at how crazy things get here at home and then imagine trying to do this with illiterate people (if they read at all its out of the Quran and barely at that) or even those that can read but do not begin to understand the concept of a democratic republic.

"We are all in this equally, but in a different capacity,” Vigiano told Quade. “President Bush called us [in New York] ‘the first casualties of the war’ … we may have responded first to the attack, but the Special Forces took it to them on their turf,” Vigiano says. “The Horse Soldiers picked up the standard from us, here in the USA, and brought it to them in Afghanistan.”
“In every sense of the word,” he said, “they were an extension of our sons.”

The solution is simple - use mental health analysis and social network analysis to come up with a risk assessment value of Afghan soldiers. Only soldiers with high values may then be allowed to work with NATO. This is similar to how security assessment works in the US. There needs to be a more thorough security profiling of Afghan enlists. Somebody's been sleeping at the job.
Be careful about what you ask for. They might just all fail the tests.
A hundred Afghan cops a month are getting killed. Showing up is the job requirement.
AB-1981, Pandora6, cheetah-822547,
From the Article:
And where in the article does it say that the man was actually in the Afghan Military.
AB-1981 - Somebody's been sleeping at the job.
That would be the US Civilians of President Obama's US Civilian Surge(s). These US Civilians do not give a sh!t as it is not their arses that will get killed, since they live and work on secured Bases. Previously, we (US Military) used to do Vetting, now we only do Vetting for Afghans in our Area(s) of Operation(s).
1. Who will conduct the tests? He or she may be blown up!
2. Only Bush and his team could enter into simulataneous wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Both places were never held by outsiders for long. Of course, there might have been some david's like super duper advisors too. These davids in their own world consider earth as flat!
3. Intelligence chief was busy in battles against women and NATO chief was busy in e-mails to women.
4. Many considered backstabbing Pakis as strategic allies. Pakis are responsible for half of NATO forces deaths. So British are giving royal treatment to Gen Mush, the biggest backstabbing criminal and a Godfather for Paki Islamic militants.
5, God knows from where they could get that Karzai to lead!
Why is this bad news, use your brains you shouldn't have been there in the fist place...
When some flash monies and favors, brains don't work.
What brains did Bush and his team have to enter into to Iraqi and Afghan war?
9/11 was due to Pakis and Saudis.
Saudis, oil companies and their lobbyists showed Afghanistan and Iraq to Bush and his team and top military people on the map!
So brains went into those wars!
They were using someone else brains!
I think that for each man we killed over there we created 4 more terrrists, relatives and children. We ought to get out of there.
In that case, non-Muslims and minority sects people whom the Islamic militants, especially Sunni ones, killed must have made more than 10 million terrorists!
Is this terrorist business one-way street also?
Condolences to his family and countrymen.
The green on blue attacks seem to be in correlation to Afghan and ISAF forces arresting and killing Taliban terrorists. What the article did not mention is that a day previously in Helmand province Taliban leader Mohammad Sayed was killed and another Taliban terrorist-insurgent wounded in the joint ops. US Senators Levin and Reed are in Afghanistan -visited Task Force 'Dragon'. To keep yourself informed - go to http://www.isaf.nato.int/article/isaf-releases-index.php and http://www.isaf.nato.int/article/casualty-report/isaf-casualties-512.html
No david, they relate to reprisal for having the worst manners.
The soldier killed in the green on blue attack was a Brit from 28th Engineering Regiment- the 439th Brit killed in Afghanistan since October 2001. Condolences for his family, his fellow engineers for a loss of life while trying to better the lives of Afghanis.
I don't mean to express a sense of cultural racism but is it me or are Muslims ingrates to a higher level than most other race/culture/religion? I grew up with a few good Muslims in my school so didn't have a negative impression. They were smart and very good science students. WTF?
I look forward to when these wars end. I just dont feel the cost is worth the results. Which arent that much as far as changing the country. And when did we switch from hunting terrorists, to changing Afghanistans religion anyway?
They are simply waiting until we leave, so unless the west plans to stay there forever, we cant win.
Leon Panetta recently said the USA military will NEVER leave Afghanistan. I am surprised he would admit that.
You can't fix that area, just do what we did in Vietnam and agent orange the hell out of the area. Or give them free birth control and eventually they will go extinct. Yes I know my comments are highly offencive and small minded its just we have been there for over a decade and the place still remains a corrupt $het hole where the a large portion of the population hates us and will never want our presence there.
Afghanistan has been called the graveyard of empires, and for good reason. Alexander the Great could not conquer it, nor could Darius or Xerxes, all of whom were extremely powerful in their day. The Brits had delusions of grandeur there in the 18th and 19th centuries, yet they too are gone.
Invading Afghanistan was the beginning of the end for the USSR, which collapsed not long after they retreated. We were arming the mujahedeen against the Russians, and they morphed into the Taliban. Not a good choice of friends on our part.
I feel sorry for the people who live there, but we will never gain anything useful from Afghanistan. Since they've sold the mineral rights to China, let China defend its interests there.
All we are doing there is fighting a war for someone else to win. Pannetta is on his way out. I hope Hagle takes a more pragmatic view of the situation and pulls us out of a place we never should have been to begin with.
My opinion has been guided by a senior naval officer friend who just returned from there. He never wants to go back there, and said we are accomplishing nothing. I believe him over pundits and so-called national security experts. Occasionally we really need to listen to the guys who have their feet on the ground, not the senior military officials who are just hoping to keep theri jobs.+.
AS USUAL THE DON'T KNOW SH!T POSTS.
You don't know the who, what, why, were, when, how of the 1990s Fundamentalist Islamic Taliban, that massacred the 1980s Pro US Afghan Muhajeen of Operation Cyclone.
Uh, huh, first that is him, not your arse. Second, unless he is a USN SEAL or USN Corpsman attached to the Ground Combat Forces that speaks Pashtun or Dari, his knowledge of this place is limited to what he saw on a secure base. Third, ever since two USN personnel thought it would be nice to go sight seeing Kabul, we don't let Non Ground Combatants off the Secure Bases to cause International Incidents (get themselves killed or captured).
Did not happen ever since I have been involved with the US Military Training Teams to US Ally Iraq during the Iran Iraq Wars, rotated to Operation Cyclone till now. So why would anyone listen to us few dozen survivors of the almost thousand (deceased) from since then till now.
David, appreciate your post but I'm not clear on what your point is, other than saying publia has misconceptions about how things really are in Afghanistan. Are you saying that positive progress is being made there, or the opposite?
"In the latest attack, in Helmand's Gereshk district on Monday evening, a British soldier was killed and six more British soldiers wounded,"
British Queen, princes and Tony Blair and co should receive the dead body and give the soldier royal burial!
British, French, Germans and many European nations imagine that they still rule the world. So they set the rules for the world.
They are first to jump into "interventions" in Muslim nations and first to run these days!
Who can tell these people: come to real world and 21st century?
Sorry: Syria and Iran are on urgent business list!
Which idiots (or again money controls the brains of many) will host fronts for Sunni Islamic hating and killing like Syrian Networks/Observatory for Human Rights?
Just see: how British respect "human rights" of the most rabid Islamic mad nuts like Sunnis of Saudi variety!
I remember in 1963 when a distraught President John F. Kennedy said it was up to the South Vietnamese people if they wanted democracy. He was beyond correct, but he was killed later that year. Of course the majority of South Vietnamese could have cared less about democracy and freedom so now they live under one of the worlds worse communist dictatorships.
President and General Eisenhower warned of the danger of the military - industrial complex. He also said it is the soldier who prays for peace the most since they pay the highest price. Another great President who was beyond correct.
Sadly the blood filthy war profiteers control the politicians and never risk any of their treasure.
Our departure from Afghanistan is LONG OVER DUE. Over ten years and the Afghans cannot train and fight for themselves? So how do you fix such stupidity? Well, not at the expense of our treasure.
Again the words of President Kennedy ring so true, but for a different people. The Afghans need to stand up and alone if they want democracy and freedom from the Taliban. Probably Karzai needs to have death squads to kill the insurgents in his country and launch an invasion into Pakistan to destroy Taliban bases.
Why do we have soldiers in this worthless place? The people do not want civilization or civilized type government - we are wasting time, money and especially lives trying to give them something they have never had, do not want, and would destroy if they had. All the Afghanis and Pakis know is tribal warfare, warlords, and treachery - cooperation is for the weak! And we are viewed as weak, trying to help everyone - a tool to be used and thrown away (or killed).
So, pull out every man, piece of equipment and tool that we have brought there. Level every building that we built, every bridge, every water and power plant. They want their country their way, let them go back to throwing rocks and drinking camel urine.
certainly a lot of hate and discontent rolling around on these pages...
and for good reason... Afghanistan .. a totally botched occupation and pacification.
Karzai, Pakistan, Taliban, NATO, US government backed companies employed to exploit the resources of an occupied country, the list seemingly never ends. Now the Chinese... although it is in my opinion that the Chinese involvement is approved of by our government. It only makes sense that a modern economic giant on the same continent would intervene on behalf of the Afghans, turning the raw materials into goods then readily and cheaply marketed to the West.
Thorny issues...
Had the United States stayed on focus and destroyed the infrastructure of Al Qaida, punished those that harbored them and came home with the lesson that we must be vigilant about fanatical Islamic Jihadists and employed defensive postures to counter the threat I believe we as a Nation would have saved a lot of lives and kept our place as a world leader.
get the hell out of them middle east country's...let them go at each other...they like it a lot...
Another UN soldier killed by Muslim scum. These are not "insider" attacks. Muslims are not "insiders" except to one thing, the Umma. We a nothing but infidel fresh meat to them. To believe anything else is delusional. Karzai = Muslim scum. Afghanistan = Muslim scum. The Afghans don't want to get rid of the Taliban, they ARE the Taliban.
Yes! Our Afghanistan allies are watching our back..... to see when they can shot us in the back@! SHUT the place down or let the miiltary fight to win !
It didn't say in the article (or I missed it) but I hope they killed the POS back. I'm so tired of reading these stories.
My condolences to the soldier's family, thank you for your service and sacrifice.
Bring our troops home, cut off all aid to Afghanistan and their Paki buddies.
No word on the fate of the shooter. The simple fix is to get all allied forces out of their God-forsaken flea infested country and let Hamid Karzai and his trusted (drug running) followers fight their own war. If they don't want the Taliban and Al-Qaida running things, then Karzai should put an army together and fight, rather than letting his people sit around hoping the US will protect them and their opium crop.
This ongoing problem is akin to those that trust a Pitt Bull dog. They seem fine then then in an instant they have you by the throat. I avoid Pitt Bulls and Muslims, safer that way.
It is time for a bit of common sense. Please explain what a "win" or "victory" in the middle east means, in plain English for this uninformed American. Are we not having some budget problems inside our borders? Can't bring back the dollars we have wasted so far, any more than the lives that have been lost, but we can stop the drain of those American resources. Actually only the lives have been lost, money just changes hands. Wouldn't those future billions help us out more than all of the other entitlements? Who is more entitled, Americans that have paid into Social Security during a lifetime of work, or an Afghan President that trashes us every time he speaks? It is time to come home, and bring our money with us. Now, not 2014 or whenever, NOW. BS that we can't do it, it is the profiteers that say that. Start loading troops on planes headed home rather than there, put paid guards around our airstrips while we load up everything that we can take with us. Explode everything that can't be moved. And never send another dime. Let them be China's ally for a while, perhaps they can afford friends like that? Let any American citizen that wants to stay remain, but only at their own risk. No rescue efforts if things go badly for them. No further immigrants from anywhere in the middle east, without lengthy vetting, and then only those that can bring an asset or skill with them. We spend a lot of time yelping about Mexicans crossing over into the US, they are not coming in to cause mass terror, we should be worried about middle Easterners that may have less than our best interests in their hearts. Oh well, nobody that has any power to make changes will give a darn about what an average person has to say. I am just venting!
More than a hundred years ago, Rudyard Kipling wrote about the futility of the English trying to rule and "civilize" this same place. Particularly about the insanity of training a soldier and bringing him to Afg. at great cost, to be killed by a local born boy with a five dollar junk rifle. Didn't make sense back then, didn't work for the Russians thirty years ago, doesn't work for the US now. And if you did subjugate every single person there, what do you have - you are the king of a dung heap! Hail King! Hail yes!
wow, cant even say an afgan soldier anymore. somone who went to the store bought a uniform, was able to access a secure area and shot someone.
Why cant they just say another afgan soldier did it? We need to get the h*ll out of there.
