You know, after reading up on this a bit, it seems there's really only one thing all these groups have in common. Whether Shiite, Sunni, Salafist, etc., whether middle class or poor, whether educated or ignorant, there is one thing that unites them: hatred of America. That's been stoked in the ME since even before the Iranian debacle. No US President has been able to come out on top (if you even THINK Reagan, you need to be slapped upside the head... with a brick and a transcript of the Ollie North trial), because whoever grabs power realizes that the power of the populace relies right now on demonization of the "other." And so on, just like in our good home the USA, the priests, or imams, or rabbis, or preachers, or whoever love to stoke nationalist pride by blaming those who are not like "us."
