BBC legend Jimmy Savile committed at least 214 sex crimes, police say

Iconic British television presenter Jimmy Savile shows off his OBE award after being honored at London's Buckingham Palace on March 21, 1972.

LONDON — Former BBC star Jimmy Savile was one of Britain’s "most prolific" sex offenders, committing at least 214 sex crimes against victims aged as young as 8, police said Friday.

Investigators released a report cataloging more than 50 years of rapes and indecent assaults. It accused the late television and radio host of using his celebrity status to gain access to vulnerable children in hospitals, nightclubs and even a hospice for the terminally ill.

Almost all the allegations have been made since Savile’s death in 2011, even though the offences date back as far as 1955.

The revelations have triggered a scandal in Britain and prompted a string of public inquiries into how some allegations were not properly investigated while Savile was alive.

"It is now clear that Savile was hiding in plain sight and using his celebrity status and fundraising activity to gain uncontrolled access to vulnerable people across six decades," the police-led report said. "For a variety of reasons the vast majority of his victims did not feel they could speak out and it’s apparent that some of the small number who did had their accounts dismissed by those in authority including parents and carers."

Savile, who raised an estimated $55 million for charity, achieved fame on BBC shows including "Top of the Pops" and "Jim'll Fix It." In 1990, he was given a knighthood by Britain's Queen Elizabeth and received a Papal Knighthood at the Vatican.

For 20 years, Jimmy Savile's children's show was a highlight of Saturday night family TV on the BBC. But now, British police say 300 people have come forward with claims that Savile abused them during his 60-year broadcasting career. NBC's Annabel Roberts reports.

The offences span 28 police forces across the U.K. and the scale of his abuse is so vast that the report included a map and an index of the alleged locations.

The number of people Savile victimized "simply beggars belief," Peter Watt, co-author of the report [PDF link] and director of children’s charity NSPCC told ITV News.

"He is without doubt one of the most prolific sex offenders we have ever come across and every number represents a victim that will never get justice now he is dead. But with this report we can at least show his victims that they have been taken seriously and their suffering has been recognized."

In total, more than 450 have people have come forward to police with allegations of abuse involving Savile. Most but not all victims have been interviewed and to date 214 criminal offences have been formally recorded. They included 34 rapes or serious sexual assaults, according to the report. The last incident recorded occurred in 2009. His victims ranged in age from 8 to 47.

The report concluded:

“The details provided by the victims of his abuse paint the picture of a mainly opportunistic individual who used his celebrity status as a powerful tool to coerce or control them, preying on the vulnerable or star-struck for his sexual gratification. Sadly, this type of behavior is not uncommon in any society - sexual abuse, whether in street gangs, though trafficking or within families and institutions, often involves the use of powerful coercion, intimidation and manipulation to exploit the vulnerable."

In a separate development, Britain’s most senior prosecutor apologized to some of the women abused by Savile, revealing that police missed three chances to take him to trial while he was alive.

Keir Starmer, the director of public prosecutions, said police had been "unjustifiably cautious" investigation four allegations involving girls as young as 14 who said they were abused by Savile in the 1970s.

He said he hoped the organization’s internal review would prove to be a "watershed" moment in the handling of child abuse cases.

In a statementhe said:

"Many people feel that for sexual offences, where it is 'one person's word against another's' and there is no or little scientific or other evidence to support the allegation, no prosecution should be brought. But this is to ignore the reality of many sexual offences which, by their nature, do not usually take place in front of witnesses and result in no meaningful scientific evidence. Taking a cautious approach to all complainants, on the ground that some might be making a false allegation of a sexual offence, can have the consequence that a prosecution for a true complaint may not take place."

Pedo....

Whyisit that most Pedo's are bus drivers, kid show hosts, teachers, clowns etc...? When people want to be with children for a career, they should have some serious background checks. I know there will be some people that will come up clean that are Pedo's but, they've got to do something.

He's dead.

Burning in hell (if you believe in that sort of thing); so, do you know what this means now? Nothing.

Who's going to take the fall for this? No one. There's going to be a lot of bitching and then the story's going away.

Imagine what the fallout would be if they caught Sandusky 5 years AFTER he died?

Utterly pointless; and hopeless too...

Lord,

The guy was loaded with cash. These peoples complaints fell on deaf ears because of his popularity while alive.

Now that he's dead, they can come forward, sue his estate, and maybe pay off their houses or something else...

The biggest bummer is going to be for the relatives that received his inheritance.

Wow, how sensitive of you. Actually, I'm pretty sure the "biggest bummer" is the psychological torture his victims have to live with the rest of their lives because of this perv. Money can't make that go away. But I sure hope they get whatever they can out of him now.

Creek, because those are professions that put them in close contact with young children. I agree with your thoughts about deep background checks on people that work with children.

Cases like these, and Sandusky, etc. hopefully will open peoples eyes when interviewing prospects and not cutting costs but doing the checks required.

We need to protect our children.

He didn't say that all teachers want to be with children for bad reasons. What he said was "most Pedo's are bus drivers, kid show hosts, teachers, clowns etc" Meaning - most pedophiles choose an occupation that puts them close to children.

Big difference in the wording.

The Brits should be ashamed of themseves. They seem to cover up nasty bits like this to protect pederasts. I'd exhume the bastard and toss his slimey body in a volcano.Don't expect the Brits to do anything but have a stiff upper lip.

Brits should be ashamed of themselves? This doesn't happen in the US at all Ron? I believe Sandusky had a cover up for years too, no? And let's not forget the whole Catholic church debacle.
As for the body being exhumed, actually his family already did that, smashed his grave stone and cremated him.
In addition, we actually keep our sickos in jail (see Myra Hindley) where they belong instead of giving them a slap on the wrist and setting them free to offend again. Unlike the States.

@scorpiogirl, ron did not say that this kind of thing does not happen in the u.s. he said brits should be ashamed because there is no way this perv could have got away with this for 6 decades without some serious coverup from people in pretty high places. I don't think ron was comparing Britain and the u.s. and saying one is better than the other, only that if the police in Britain had done a better job maybe this pos would not have raped and molested so many innocent people for such a long time. if people are claiming that someone is a child molesting pos and it goes on for 60 years then britains police force has to share some of the blame because they clearly dropped the ball. the story even says they missed 3 chances to stop this piece of garbage and could not follow thru. the word inept comes to mind. and of course we have the same kind of crimes against innocent people in the u.s., but as I already stated, ron did not say anything like that. nice of you to defend britains police even tho they clearly SUCK! they let this pos get away with these crimes for 60 years? wow, mind boggling!! good day guvnor, pip pip and cheerios. I believe brits would call this guy a shirt lifter? but hey im not prejudice, some of my best friends are british..lol

DScott, as another commentor said, people in glass houses shouldn't throw stones. It's incredulous that this abuse of power etc didn't come to light sooner, but apparently there were some very powerful people assisting in the coverup. However, this kind of thing isn't isolated to British as you yourself have pointed out. We should all be ashamed of not doing more to protect our innocents. But name calling and finger pointing doesn't resolve the issue does it?
Our British police force don't, as you so eloquently put it, "suck." In fact, they are among some of the finest, bravest people you will ever know and put their lives on the line daily to protect people like who you don't appreciate them. I'm sure you're one of those people who call your own police force "pigs" but are the first to dial 911 at any sign of a threat.
No-one disagrees with the fact that there are some people who SHOULD be ashamed, but to lump all Brits in with that statement and randomly blame our entire police force is irrational. Present your case, if you must, but don't stand there and trash an entire country or it's "thin blue line" and call it an argument, especially when there are factions of the US who have very little to be proud of in this regard.

@scorpiogirl1

I take exception to the "all Brits should be ashamed of themselves" statement. As a Brit (ex-pat) I am just as shocked and disgusted at these revelations as any other level headed person reading this. Although having lived in USA for 10 years now, I still pay close attention to what I still consider home news. Does the Jerry Sandusky case mean all Americans should be ashamed of themselves....??

Those who should be ashamed at the acts of Jimmy Saville whom even I once revered when growing up to the likes of TV shows - "Top of The Pops" and "Jim'll Fix It" are those who were the closest to him. There is no way in the world that top executives at the BBC or the charity organizations that he worked with had no knowledge of these shameful acts given how prolific he seemed to be. Although I am sorry for the legacy that has now been dumped on family members, I'd raise an eyebrow or two if nobody in his family knew about his tendencies. I'd also be surprised if top honcho heads don't roll at the BBC and at other organizations as a result of the multiple investigations that are going on now. Even Gary Glitter, already a convicted sex offender both in UK and abroad (he was deported from Cambodia as a result) and also served time in Vietnam for child sex molestation has been re-arrested in connection with the Saville case.

Its a sad sad sad turn of events since the guy has now passed away and there can be no real justice served whatever the outcome is of the investigations - but at least victims will get peace of mind after having finally been able to come forward, plus maybe a monetary settlement, although no money in the world will fix the hurt and pain caused by all of this.

I believe it's been stated that his behavior was excused with the words, "well, that's just Jimmy.." I have some great memories attached to sitting around the TV watching Jim'll Fix It and Top of the Pops, forever now darkened by what we now know went on before, during and after those shows. Ugh. Those poor, poor kids.

Wonder if people will stop paying their TV licenses in protest. Doesn't the license fee fund the BBC because they have no "advertisement" income?

It IS "men" primarily and most of the time. Sure there are exceptions in a tiny, tiny percentage of cases. Anybody with an ounce of brain knows this already....

AND this is the major reason why automatic, semi-automatic, 30 or 100 round clips need to be BANNED. Because men are naturally aggressive and frequently dwell on things like revenge and violent retribution. While many get these feelings out on the sports field, military, or other endeavors, there are many that are evil or just out of control. The SOONER people realize this FACT the BETTER...

Creek - you seem to take issue with reality, science proves that men are (at times) naturally agressive due to testosterone.

newsflash, women are also (at times) naturally overly emotional due to estrogen and other hormones, that especially go crazy during our cycle.

Funny, just the other day my friend who has 4 small kids, all of them boys said "what is it about boys that makes them turn a bouncy ball into a grenade, a stick into a gun, and a pillow into a bomb"?

where does a little 4 year old boy learn to "play" like that?

why do most little boys enjoying playing "violence" as kids?

Do me a favor, think back on when you were a boy and tell me your favorite things to "play or do" were not violent in any way shape or form? dont forget to include your GI JOES as violent, i mean, they were real american sniper hero's.

Have the people on this comment board gone mad!!! You rant on about men and sex crimes while over the last two decades women have finally been exposed at a rapid rate of sexual abusing young boys. Many teachers and caregivers have been prosecuted in every state. Beyond that this juvenile banter that your country protects pedofiles more is tragic. PLEASE the lesson here is to be aware to protect children, be extremely diligent when you here rumors or notice unwanted or inapproperiate touching, even if it would be done by immediate family. This behavoir is over looked by people in power and authority at an alarming rate, but happens around the globe daily in every country. So when you here stories or comments about uncle or aunt touching kids and everyone laughs, have the balls in the real world to step up and take action!!! Not just rant some nonsense on a blog, about how tough you are and how crappy other countries have become; not productive and simply moronic. The police and authorities cannot be everywhere it is up to us to recognize and report this kind of abuse.

To all, it doesn't matter what profession someone is, a pedo is a pedo. What bothers me is that it is most times it is someone who is familiar to the child, most of the time a family member and not the stranger that folks always go after. I am not defending this guy, he should have been caught a long time ago, but money gets you out of trouble and can cover up stuff. Another thing, folks keep joking about the catholic church but yes, they covered up and some are bad, and I am not excusing what they did, but what about other religious leaders who get in trouble for the same, or better yet, why aren't folks talking about how big the boy scouts scandal is going to be. They hid records too.

Jessica...women are found to be just as violent just in different ways. Women are just as prone to violence. Men and boys tend to show it externally..through playing "GI Joe" etc. as you are stating. But women are different. It is thought out. In a case study of all of the child pornography that was being put up online they found that there were slightly more women who were engaging in these acts than men. So dont start pointing fingers at the male gender. Its people that are violent. Its people that are pedophiles. Pedophiles and violent people come in all shapes, sizes, colors, genders etc. The fact that you act like that shows that you obviously have a chip on your shoulder towards men and that means that your statement has no factual basis for your scientific explanation since it is flawed by your emotional baggage and hurtful past.

          @Jessica

You are either very young and do not have kids and have not been paying attention in history class. Sociology would be your first form of understanging gender roles. Children watch and emulate what they see. Since most of these kids have grown up watching wars on television and playing video war games it should not be a surprise. Also look at family dynamic, passive and no aggressive parents as a rule do not raise violent children. We have been sending our young men off to fight wars, since conflict started. Finally it is still in male DNA to hunt and gather and even though that has been diminished through the years for obvious reasons (super markets) it is still there. I guess the question to be asked is what does that have to do with abusing children. If your claim is testosterone makes men abuse children and all men are violent from birth, it is my humble opinion you should read more. I have witnessed many a young girl strike, bite, and act out in anger just as quickly as young boys. Back to my previous post, stay on topic think of how we can protect children from pedophiles male and female.

Yes, come to think of it I do recall reading a couple of articles shortly after he passed away and the claims started coming forward especially after Newsnight cancelled an expose since it would have been damaging to the BBC - gee such irony.

You're probably much the same age as me if you have fond memories of Jimmy Saville. Thursday nights Top Of the Pops with Jimmy and Saturday afternoons before the news - "Jim'll Fix It" were always highlights of the week for me but now those memories are being tarnished by such horrible revelations.

"thats just Jimmy....." - its excusable.....I don't care if its just whoever, celebrity or a nobody, the law of the land exists for a reason and simply who you are does not and should not apply at all....ever.

Yes the BBC is funded by the licence fee and there is no commercial advertising as a rusult and I suppose there could be a protest by non-payment of the licence, but I think the only thing that will happen should there be a mass of "non-payment" protests is a corresponding mass summons to court and various fines and/or jail terms being handed out without anything really being accomplished on the protestors part.

Having said that, I believe the BBC is going find its own shortcomings as it is since its clear that top notch people knew about this and are trying to cover it up as best they can. Look what happened to the newspaper industry when Murdoch's News of the World was forced out of business when the phone tapping scandal came to light. I don't think the BBC will be shut down - its too important an asset for that to happen but every watchdog that monitors what goes on will be clamping down on them.

"For a variety of reasons the vast majority of his victims did not feel they could speak out and it’s apparent that some of the small number who did had their accounts dismissed by those in authority including parents and carers."

These kinds of figures over decades are mind boggling. How many victims will never come forward because ______________. How many victims have passed on, moved away or are incapacitated and unable to communicate???

In total, more than 450 have people have come forward to police with allegations of abuse involving Savile. Most but not all victims have been interviewed and to date 214 criminal offences have been formally recorded. They included 34 rapes or serious sexual assaults, according to the report. The last incident recorded occurred in 2009. His victims ranged in age from 8 to 47.

These crimes were all squelched, swept under the rug or just ignored. Was he really worth protecting??? Not one person should have suffered because of the sick desires of this pos. Not one!!!

Before being a lemming of the sensation seeking news services and denouncing Paterno as an enabler of Sandusky, you should examine the evidence more carefully. The news media just accepted the conclusions of the Freeh Report at face value. But the evidence in the report doesn't support the conclusions and ignores the testimony of Dr. Jonathan Dranov. He directly contradicts the testimony of McQueary as to what McQueary saw and reported to Paterno. Freeh was hired by the PSU Board of Trustees (BOT). The BOT is controlled by the PA Governor, Tom Corbett and his political appointees. Tom Corbett was the Attorney General for the region of PA having jurisdiction over the Sandusky case when the first allegations were made (but not pursued by the AG). Being the Governor of one of the largest States (and a "swing" voting State), Tom Corbett has a lot of political ambition. A scapegoat was need so that he could escape being blamed by a news media looking for blood. The University accepted the Freeh Report and the NCAA sanctions because the Governor controlled the BOT voting and also could politically influence the amount of money the University received from the State in funding (perhaps this was used by the Governor as a threat in order to get cooperation with his plan - an example of power politics at its best). Now that groups of alumni from the University have realized his role in this debacle and he is up for re-election, Corbett has tried to save face by bringing a suit against the NCAA. Hopefully a "Mikael Blomkvist/Millennium" type investigative reporter will someday illuminate all of this.

Strip him of his knighthood, and strip all other awards he may have won over the years he was doing this. He'll gain fame, in death, as a celeb that lost everything he had been awarded; sort of like Lance and all his cycling wins because of doping.

Lance who? Don't know who this guy was and I've already forgotten his name from the article. His estate should be shared among his victims and maybe set up a trust fund to pay for their counseling needs. Fame for kid f'ing? REEEALLLY??? I don't think so.

lisa I agree completely! i would say quite a few people looked the other way to allow this to happen for such a long time. i mean come on 60 years? really? and if more than one person comes forward to make a claim of sexual abuse, then this guy should have been under constant surveillance and should not have been left alone with innocent victims who could not protect themselves. and even tho his family members had nothing to do with this pos molesting all those people over a 60 year period, too bad! take every penny of this guys estate and devide it up between any surviving victims and their families! or maybe sell everything and donate the money to a charity that works to stop the kind of abuse this pos was guilty of. only one thing tho, make sure that this pos name does not appear like he started the charity or gave all he had because he was a good person! donate his money anonymously

There were many many calls made...the BBC, British government, Scotland Yard, and London Police all covered it up. This has all been widely reporded in the UK.

50 years ago these crimes were treated differently, even up to 10 years ago, then it became popular to find and investigate sexual crimes.

I can see very easily how this man could hide in plain site. He was connected, did a lot of good and had money; typically the type of person authorities leave alone or at leas give them a lot of leeway. Things don't change that much with the wealthy even today just look at Jeffrey Epstein of Palm Beach and his minor slap for having sex with 14 year olds.

And the kids paid the price. Imagine all the damage this guy did during his lifetime and got away with it. Open your eyes people, speak up and protect our kids.

An example of another individual with "protected status" is Jerry Sandusky. Now that we know what to look for, we are goping to "discover" many others who are sexually abusing others of all ages and species, (not just humans).

Priests are able to rape for decades. If anyone dare to speak up, they get to drag out as witches, heretics and burn alive.

Nothing changes, it just due to mass communication that we are able to hear about it today. Otherwise, it would be business as usual for them.

Uncle Henry, paedophilia and homosexuality do not go hand in hand anymore than hetrosexuality and paedophilia do - it is a very uneducated thing to say and extremely naive. There were many young girls who were also molested by priests, certainly on a ratio of 4 to 1, but it did happen.

Some in the BBC covered for him.....they should have done to them what should have been done to him. And, for him......dig up his body and burn it. Then, mix the ashes in with some garbage, and take it to the landfill.....and dump it. And, do it publicly......so everyone knows it has been done. That guy was worse than a total waste.....he inflicted pain and suffering on others....and many of the others were too young to know what to do/who to report it to.

He basically got to rape & sodomize carte blanche for all those years because of a protected status he enjoyed. I can't imagine anyone didn't try to come forward- any charges were probably dismissed quickly and covered up before hitting the media. Of course, it was a perfect cover up- he was ushering in all this bloody money for various causes and was thus akin to sainthood. In reality, he was a serial rapist and, if all the facts can substantiate it, history needs to reflect this.

It's just like with Sandusky. No country or institution wants to admit that one of its most famous native sons is a pedophile. Also what does the Queen or the Pope say about having accidentally honored a pedophile? I suppose with enough success, one can cover up any crime, at least while alive!

I met a hellofa lot of women pigs myself. They seemed to get that way by stuffing their faces with cupcakes. I also know this from my own experience out in this world.

Sadly, for starters Kim, there are so many parents these days who are too busy either doing drugs or trying to make a living to pay ample attention to the children they are bringing into the world today. Many see children as merely a meal ticket, and for others, they are a new toy that gets tossed by the wayside after the new wears off. Even more sad is the fact that so many excuses are made for these cowards who seek out the weak and vulnerable in order to avoid discovery. Unfortunately though, once they're dead, the only ones suffering are the victims left behind, and they aren't being allowed to just forget the ordeal and move on. Continually reliving it all is more painful than the actual abuse. And the abuse is not exclusive to the male genders, but for some reason, even more excuses are made for the females who commit the very same offenses. For instance, many young men are on sex offender lists for engaging in sex with females only months below the legal age, and no distinction is made. On the other hand, many female teachers molest young males in their charge, and society dismisses it. One is just as wrong as the other.

thousands or millions of mens can handle their sex drive and infect to others around and later create groups whit politics support (here in USA)

This may be very controversial, but it must be said.

SO what is with these things being kept such a good secret??? Is it that no one
really wants to talk about it, OR is it that everyone wants a piece of the
financial "action" to come? Is it a matter of everyone who is
question thinking "hey, he must have did this since everyone else is
saying it, and so I might as well get paid too, so I will say it happened to
me", or did it really really happen and the pain too much to bear UNTIL
someone "simply" comes up to them and says "did this happen??" and they spill
                                                their secret.

I am very skeptical on things like this - when there is big money at the end of
                                                false testimony.

No harm in pointing out what's true John. Your observations are very legitimate, and these are forms of abuse to the children just as sure as the actual abuse. And unfortunately, many false accusations prevent many children from being able to have normal relationships with loving parents.

So, now we're disparaging Pete Towshend, and claiming that he's a pedophile?

This story on Seville may be new to you, but it's been going on since the man's death, and I have noticed that many claims that were originally made have evolved greatly, and that bothers me, and I'll explain why.

If there's one aspect of America that ought to be considered our immovable, North Star, it should be the idea that one is innocent until PROVEN guilty.

And by this, I mean by a jury of one's peers, not trial by media and/or guilt by association, or accusation.

In the early stories, when Seville has just passed away, there were only a couple of accusations made.

I recall, that when these accusers were asked why they did not come forward when the man was alive, one said that it was his sister who had been molested, and the case had been investigated, and the sister's claim was disproven.

The other accuser said that she did not come forward because she feared that she wouldn't be believed, and the fact that she was being questioned about where and when it had happened proved to her that she was right in not coming forward.

I recall being struck by that claim: because we ask her for details, this proves that we would not have believed her?

Since this time, there are seemingly hundreds of people who are now making accusations, with little or no proof.

My take? Even though the man is dead, each and every accusation needs to be investigated, and the results made public.

If Seville is guilty, we should append the historical record about him, and use whatever wealth he accumulated to pay damages to his PROVEN victims.

But if there's no more proof that what we've seen to date: all talk, and no smoking gun (so to speak), then those making these accusations are the ones that need to be punished.

Amazing how these things seem to all come to light AFTER the person being accused is dead. Over 450 people in the course of about 60 years kept this a secret? Can't even keep a secret in my town for more than a few days. Then everyone knows about it. Sounds like a bunch of people jumping on a bandwagon for some instant cash to me.

I agree completely. I also think everyone justifies what they say about him since they think everyone else must be telling the truth, so they don't want to be the only ones without a settlement. This is not right...now that he is dead and cannot speak for himself. The "accusers" shouldn't be allowed after this long to come forward, I say they missed there chance.

Anyone that feels badly for any of these accusers needs to think about the fact of if it was REAL, then these kids not saying something kept the crime from being stopped. Their silence ended up making it possible for him to keep going (if it was true). NO WAY you have do this to 450 people and this just now comes out.

wonder for that ? the reason is because many hundreds of witness, accusers, acomplices, etc, are dead o they cover their new status, afraid from the bad publicity and the law can punish to all them, is too many and short of evidences, the lawers easy can argue that. You know here in USA the GOVERNMENT hide the elements inplicate the killing of our president JFK for the public and the press for "50" years ! for this time NOBODY know the all true or just come close to the true, after this time most of the people DON'T CARE because are not part of they lifes anymore...

Sounds like presidential material to the liberals.

Yep, I agree. why do people turn everything into politics? I think it makes them feel educated or something.

CREEK DOG, Your a wacko. Your the one with the vendetta against women, you only prove my point. Psychologist have even done studies on the "American male" of today. They don't want to take any responsibility for anything, they just want to play Xbox360 in mom's basement and have "friends with benefits" relationships, and call women "fat". By the way, I am 5'5 and I weigh 125lbs, ahole, and go get a job! Another thing, you think you know everything! Your name even has the word DOG in it go figure, I rest my case...Have a good day ; )

Just proves that the rich live under a different set of laws than the rest of us. Why should anyone be surprised? In Amarillo, a very rich guy who used to own a TV station there victimized several boys over the span of several years, and nothing was done about it until now. It took people filing several civil suits before the public outcry was so great that law enforcement is finally bringing charges against him. He is an old man now, and if he goes to prison, he won't last long. In his younger days, though, he could grease the right palms to stay out of trouble.

Aahh, Orlando45, my sentiments exactly. Why is this now coming out after 50 or 60 years of alleged abuse. And of course, the guy isn't here to stand up for himself. Understand, I am NOT defending the guy, but SUDDENLY these revelations come to bear afters he is dead? There is something phony here.

No, I don't think so; I think because of his celeb status people wouldn't believe the kids making the accusations. Now that he is dead, someone finally has come forward and said we had all these complaints against him but didn't believe them. As I said earlier he should have every award ever given stripped. I doubt the Vatican will do that since they've had the pedofile priest problem for decades also.

As for Sandusky, I think he was the father figure to all those boys who probably didn't have a real father; and he perhaps had those boys fooled into thinking what was going on was normal. If that one person hadn't walked into the shower and caught Sandusky in the act with that boy, my guess is no one would've ever believed the boys' complaints. Perhaps the punishment against the Univ. of Penn is a bit harsh but so be it.
