President Obama and Afghan President Hamid Karzai agreed to moving Afghanistan's security forces into the lead across the country, and endorsed the opening of a "Taliban office." Watch their entire statements.
U.S. troops in Afghanistan will move into a support role starting this spring, President Barack Obama announced at a joint news conference with Afghan President Hamid Karzai on Friday.
"This war will come to a responsible end,” Obama said.
Troops will have a new mission in Afghanistan, Obama said, which will include the training, advising, and assisting of Afghan forces and will set the stage for a further reduction of coalition forces.
The president acknowledged that the timetable to turn over the lead to Afghan forces in military operations this spring was “accelerated somewhat.” The drawdown was already scheduled to take place sometime this summer.
Some 66,000 U.S. troops are currently in Afghanistan.
Obama was also clear that while Afghan forces will “take the lead” in any future military operations, American troops will continue fighting alongside them.
"Our men and women will still be in harm’s way,” the president said, adding that he is still expecting recommendations from generals on the ground to shape a plan for a responsible drawdown. What the transition to supporting role in Afghanistan would mean for a reduction in U.S. troops "isn't yet fully determined," Obama noted.
International forces will no longer be present in Afghan villages, Karzai said, adding that Afghanistan is moving closer to becoming a strong, sovereign state that can stand "shoulder to shoulder" with the United States. Karzai had previously said that the presence of U.S. troops were putting strain on Afghan villages.
Beyond 2014, the troops' focus will be two-pronged: on one hand, they will continue training and assisting Afghan troops; in addition, they will continue to go after remnants of al-Qaida and other terrorist affiliates who may threaten the United States.
Immunity agreement
Obama said any agreement to keep troops in Afghanistan beyond 2014 must include an immunity agreement so that U.S. troops are not subjected to Afghan law. Karzai noted that he could argue for immunity in a way that would not compromise his country's sovereignty.
The mission in Afghanistan has come close to achieving its central goal, Obama said, which was to incapacitate and dismantle al-Qaida so that it could no longer attack the United States. Having a safe and sovereign Afghanistan was also in the interest of the United States' national security, he added.
But Obama also said it would not be possible for Afghanistan to reconcile with the Taliban unless the group renounces terrorism.
Looking ahead to the upcoming elections, Karzai said organizing a free and fair election would be one of his biggest achievements.
"For me, the greatest of my achievements, eventually, as seen by the Afghan people, will be a proper, well organized, interference-free election in which the Afghan people can elect their next president," Karzai said, adding he would have no qualms about stepping down.
"I will be a retired president, and very happily a retired president."
Karzai's visit comes at a time when U.S.-Afghan relations are strained, and there is an ongoing debate in Washington over the unpopular war and the U.S. military role in Afghanistan once the mission there expires in 2014.
The Pentagon has said thousands of troops will be needed to bolster and train Afghan security forces.
Defense Secretary Leon Panetta and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton were among those who met with Karzai this week.
"After a long and difficult past, we finally are, I believe, at the last chapter of establishing ... a sovereign Afghanistan that can govern and secure itself for the future," Panetta told Karzai on Thursday.
The Afghan president met with Clinton on Thursday night at the State Department.
More world stories from NBC News:

These wars have been nothing but a waste of blood and money.
Not a waste at all. We pretty much destroyed Al Qaeda's network and keeping the Taliban on the run stops them from attacking U.S. soil.
If we leave tomorrow or in ten tears from now it won’t matter. This region of the world has been totally dominated by a barbaric religion for centuries and when we’re gone it will creep back in and then it’s back to square one.
Mr President, get our people out of this third world &*%$pit NOW….. From the very first day this war has always been a lost cause.
It's really nice of the media to mention this meeting, but I'm still waiting for the media to mention the news about the soldiers who continue to be shot in the head by Afghan soldiers and by Afghan police on a daily basis. Playing this issue down by not reporting this. No word this week in the US media at all about the British soldier who was shot dead by Afghan police this week, as there had been no word in the US media about dozens of previous cases of British soldiers who got shot dead by Afghan police. It doesn't matter of course that it could well have been an American soldier who was in patrol with other Nato forces. Obviously the significance of this issue doesn't exist if the one happened to be shot that day wasn't an American in that force.
Well that's just great. It only took us a bit more than a decade to learn in Afghanistan what we learned in Viet Nam in a bit less than a decade.
It would sure be nice if we'd sit back now and think over why it is we have this insatiable need to create combat veterans.
It's time to bring our troops home. All of them.
Simply not true. Maybe for you far left liberals, but for folks with intelligence and who have the capability to know and understand the middle east it was all we could do that would impress upon these medieval bastards on how to treat folks from the rest of the world. They just think that their Islam is what we all need to respect and love. I don't think so. I am not muslim now, nor will I ever be ... and, by the way I don't have to respect you or your child molester prophet. I've ducked and dodged a few of their bullets, and there have been a couple of them who didn't get down in time as well. Not proud of all that, but I'm here writing this back to you, and they aren't. These people are one cut above, actually make that one cut below most animals. Wars are always blood and money. It was worse than some, better than others, and necessary to stand for a principal that you don't even understand if you are a left wing-nut liberal. So STFU if your dog isn't in the fight, and your motor mouth is just idling along like most libs.
Looks like the above "news" story forgot to tell us about how Karzai and Obama have agreed to the opening of a Taliban "office" in Qatar ! Oh well, we stupid American subjects don't need to know all the details of the Chosen One's dealings, Right?
This GOP war is now costing us two Billion a year in aid, when is all this foreign aid going to end, I'm getting sick & tired of supporting the world with our tax dollars !!!
Lets pay down our debt before we layout one dime, who voted for all these jerks giving our money away when we are broke !!!
Catch this is ALL obama's war. He could have been out 4 years ago. The two billion in aid could stop and the troops come home TOMORROW. That is one thing I am very confident Congress would agree to. This is ALL obama's war.
FERNDOC posted: "Looks like the above "news" story forgot to tell us about how Karzai and Obama have agreed to the opening of a Taliban "office" in Qatar !"
WTF are you talking about. The Taliban don't need anyone's permission to open an office anywhere. What nonsense.
"Life is tough, it's even tougher when you're stupid'" John Wayne
Life must be really tough for you.
There have been two presidential elections since this was, in your words, a GOP war. The truth is that 99 house Democrats voted for funding for the war in Afghanistan, and a majority of congressional Democrats voted for both Iraq wars.
Then Dems were at the helm when WW I, WW II, Korea and Vietnam were all started. It took a Republican to bring an end to the madness in Vietnam. The big gunslinger "Reagan" had a grand total of two days of war which he won decisively.
Hey man, Obama owns this war. His fatalities are 4 times the rate for our soldiers than they were under Bush, and now he is aiding the Al Qaeda and Taliban in Syria to remove a "dictator" who honored all faiths and ethnicities in favor of the Islamic Brotherhood who will install Sharia Law. Our best bet is if Obamas plane does not make it back.
Now we have to pay two Billion dollars a year for the rest of our life's just to get out of W's war, more debt and no end in sight - when are we going to start paying our bills ???
Catch44...Do you even know why we went to Afghanistan?? This was America's war...Not Democrat...Not Republican...Look past your disgust for all not liberal and pull your head out....
The conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan had two goals. First to keep those occupied that might otherwise had nothing better to do then bring their terrorist activities to US soil. Keeping us out of their backyards was a deterrent from coming to ours. Second, because US corporations want a stake in the vast mineral deposits in Afghanistan. That country could go from barbaric third world, to paved in gold with what they have waiting to be unearthed. There has also been a long discussed oil pipeline through Afghanistan. But whether the religious fanatics will play nice and allow the region to develop is yet unknown, although history would suggest it to be unlikely.
So, If I drive your car, it becomes mine?
This is still Bush's war.
When? What is a “responsible” end?
Hmmmmm, so which is it? Training, advising and assisting or fighting?
So, what have we been doing differently for the past 10 years?
Read: For the right amount of “sovereignty pay” Karzai can find a way to bribe Chief Justice Abdul Salam Azimi, to look the other way so as not to be “compromised”.
ROTFLMAO!!!!! Oh yeah, the Taliban are going to renounce terrorism, as soon as pigs fly out of Karzai’s a$$.
Yes, his retirement package was negotiated today to be funded by the American taxpayers.
I wonder if it includes Obamacare?
So, is this a “drawdown”, a “withdrawal” or a “bolstering” of troops.
More importantly, what have we done to eliminate the largest export of opium from Afghanistan? Farmers expanded growth by almost 20% last year. Afghanistan, after all these years maintains its position as the largest producer and exporter of opium in the world.
It was estimated in 2011 that between the federal government and the states, we spent nearly $54 billion on the war on drugs. That equates to $1,716.77 each and every second of 2011. So, on top of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan we have been spending hundreds of billions on a drug “war” we did absolutely nothing about while we were in Afghanistan.
Al Qaeda is still as strong as ever, the Taliban will be back in control of Afghanistan to protect their cash cow, opium, and we’ll still be spending hundreds of billions of dollars.
FOR WHAT?
Why has it taken Obama six years to withdraw? And it sounds as if he would like a permanent force there if Afghanistan will allow it.
If Bush jr. didn't lie to our congress and go into Iraq we could of got ben in six months, Obama ended up feeding the fish in a timely manner !!!
Phil- at least read the headline of the article before commenting. he is trying to END the war in afghanistan. nothing permanent here.
There's a reason the US was sent to Iraq and Afghanistan, and will be sent to Iran next; not only those places but LatAm, Asia, etc. etc. This has nothing to do with 9/11 or a supposed "War on Terror". We the American people do not control our government and have not been for a long time.
The only countries that do control their governments are the very same ones vilified by those who control our own government, the financial system, and the international press. If you are going to have a world dictatorship run by a shadow government, then any sovereign nation with a national identity is a threat to that dictatorship, just like any faction that wants autonomy under a dictatorship (we'll use Americans under the British Empire example) are a threat to the stability of that very dictatorship.
When America broke free, the sun pretty much set on the British Empire. If countries all over the world break free, then the sun will set on this international dictatorship. If you don't understand the governments actions, don't try to, because their orders are not coming from you, but a power higher up.
These elections are just a game of musical chairs; we have no say in the international government that runs the show and takes over countries by banking and press. They drive countries so far into debt, that they can never get out of debt, and eventually demand payment by land, natural resources, and precious metals.
If you want to find the criminals, follow the money trail. But as long as we don't read history, our educational system is attacked, and garbage is promoted on TV and in the movies, we will be in a state wondering, what's wrong? Why did such and such a crisis happen? Why is the economy bad? When is the economy coming back? Why are our schools failing? Why does Congress have an approval rating of 10%? Why can't we elect the right people?
We need to become problem solvers instead of playing the role of the victim that got blindsided. And you can't solve problems without getting an education first.
An even bigger question is why did the anti-war protests from the left stop as soon as a Democrat was elected to office? Obama is a warmonger, and the liberals who support him are hypocrites.
The GOP are the Warmongers, if Romney was elected we would be Bombing Iran by now !!!
Catch 22... exactly WHAT LIE did President Bush give us??
I know the lie from the racist in the White House "This war will come to a responsible end,” just makes me wanna laugh... what end?? He's stated our troop will STILL be in Afgan... still be dieing, still be spending billions of $$... so what "end" is he talking about?
Get your head out of that racists a$$ and start thinking for yourself...
And what, prey tell, is your proof that Romeny would be "bombing Iran by now..."?
Taliban renounce terrorism? That's rich. And ignorant.
Phil - President Obama has been in office a bit longer than 4 years, one term. NOT 6.
He waited for the right opportunity to take out Osama Bin Laden - May 2011. From that date on he has been planning the withdrawa and eliminating Al Quaeda leaders individually. The President also completed an orderly military withdrawal from Iraq December 2011.
McCain and Liebrmann and Graham have been whining about this all along, and remember "the Mittster" during the election - he wanted to increase troops there? The President wanted to let the public weigh in on his approach. He was re-elected, now he is pulling out of the last of two GW Bush wars.
Now I'd like to hear from the GOP how they plan to pay over 4 $trillion spent on those wars that they never wanted to pay. They lowered taxes when they should have ben raised. If the public does not want to pay taxes, then maybe they need to scale back their wish list for military domination of the world. Any suggestions Mr. "no more revenue" McConnell?
The "war" on Iraq and Afghanistan will never come to an end so long as these countries pose a threat to ditch the world government that runs them now. It doesn't matter who the President is or who is in Congress. There is a reason we have over 1,000 military bases around the world in over 100 countries, what the Founding Fathers would say is hostile to democracy. Although they have American personnel, they are not controlled by America since it would not be in America's interests to drive up the debt for something that does not give the US much benefit, but you can sure bet the World Government uses them to kick any country that wants to be nationalistic back in line, similar to how England tried to kick the US back in line in the 18th century.
Thank you Ron Paul for your service, but if you gave up, then there must be no hope left in DC.

So, stow it bub. You dishonor your oath.
Dorfy,
The withdrawal from Iraq was a treaty signed by President Bush in November 2008 so all President Obama did was follow the treaty.
On Afghanistan it was in response to 9/11 and was a completely bi-partisan war. I also remember a majority of Democrats saying in 2008 our complete focus should be in Afghanistan because that is where the terrorists are and the President actually tripled the troops there.
Dave, why'd you have to besmerch Christianity? Nothing was said about Christians doing anything to anyone in this article...
Stop your hate... it's sickening... and embarrasing...
Yep it's all about us warmongering, war profiteering Democrats. Our peace loving Republicans had nothing to do with it. And Valery Plame didn't really work for the CIA...and the Democrats lied about yellow cake uranium...and the Democrats transported all the WMD to Syria just to embarrass GW.
It's both Democrats and Republicans who are at fault, both who do not represent the American people, so stop fighting each other. Bush had as much control over starting the wars as Obama has over closing Guantanamo Bay. They both get their orders from people you don't even elect, which is why everyone has trouble understanding why they do, what they do.
The GOP Koch Tea Baggers should be on Americas terrorist list, its terrible what they are doing to our country !!!
it just seems when a Republican President is elected we go into war & debt !!!
Ol Doc, stop it already... we know how much you hate ANYONE not a demoncrat...
It's a fact that BOTH Sides of the aisle voted for the war in Iraq... and with good reason. If you fail to see that, then the're not much anyone can do to help you see the world as it is.
No, that racist in the White House could NOT have stopped this war, and he WILL NOT end it... our stake in the middle east is too big... we have to much to lose if we leave now. Think about Iran taking over Iraq (as they are now) and THEN having Afgahistan... we're here for the long haul, boys and girls... just sit back and ride it out...
So, catch, you're saying when Ronald Regan was in office, we were in wars AND in debt? You're saying that when Bubba was Pres, things were all rosey?? WoW... such a tainted look on history you have! Don't know about you, but when BOTH Bushes were in office, I was living a pretty good life... with Bubba and the Racist, I'm not doing so well...
Time to come home for our soldiers.
But I guess there should some arrangement so that we won't waste all the efforts in a decade.
MikeO76:
You are dead right, the Taliban don't need anybody's approval but that is not what they are getting. They are getting the complicity of Karzi and Obama, both of whom encourage and applaud the Taliban's plans for that new "office!" Karzi is being calculating, lets just hope that Obama is being his usual naive and juvenile self.
What a price we have paid for Iraq and Afghanistan. Wasted life, money, time and resources and it really won't make any difference except they probably hate us more than they did before. It will be like Viet Nam - we will be going out the front door and the bad guys will be coming in the back. Ultimately, nothing will change.

I'm waiting for he news to show Obama when he was campaigning for his first term saying he was bringing all of our troops home soon.We shouldn't be there supporting those who are killing our soldiers.

No, but I will wager that a significant part of the “being nice” approach to getting the information is because the threat of torture is hanging over their heads.
I hope you’re not naive enough to think that someone committed so ferociously, to destruction and massacre, so as to plant a nuclear device will just succumb to niceties without something more ominous motivating them in the event of niceties not working.
The world witnessed 19 devoted terrorists use 4 jetliners as WMD’s very successfully. To think simply being nice will get them to surrender their nuclear device is plebeian.

I am sure you have seen the quotes by President Clinton, Rep. Nancy Pelosi, Sen. Kerry, V.P. Al Gore, etc.

Bob,
Yes, Pig does make sense! (Not since!) More sense than you make!
To all of you who are just predisposed to hate President Obama, and to chastise and offer vitriolic criticism and rhetoric regarding every single policy and action of this President, ...I will remind you all of two fundamental truths
1). President Obama campaigned on the promise to bring these two long-protracted and costly wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, which were started by the preceding administration, to an end. And President Obama was elected twice by the American people to follow through and do exactly that ( the first American President since Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1956 to be elected twice with more than 51% of the popular vote of the people of the United States ).
2). It is very easy to start wars; but it is enormously difficult to bring wars to an end.
American,
The quotes from Clinton were in 1998 so how is Bush responsible for that. President Clinton was under the assumption that there was a weapons program. You can just do a Google search and it is all there.
The US spent so many years, sacrificed so many lives and money in Afghanistan. Although the forever unpopular Bush started the war, the war is nonetheless justifiable right after 9/11.
.
President Obama again has helped clean up Bush's arse, just as in the cases of Iraq and the recession. Any future Afghan plan should guarantee that all the US efforts and sacrifices are not wasted.
.
It's a simple logic that doesn't require much brain to comprehend. But, why is this not common sense to some of you here, such as Bob James-7423676?

DUE TO PRESIDENT OBAMA'S FAILED FOREIGN POLICIES THE US GOT KICKED OUT OF IRAQ AFTER THE FUNDAMENTALIST ISLAMIC SHIA REPUBLIC OF IRAN TOLD THE ISLAMIC SHIA GOVERNMENT OF IRAQ NO MORE NEGOTIATIONS WITH PRESIDENT OBAMA NOR SOS CLINTON. Results the Allies of the Fundamentalist Islamic Shia Republic of Iran, the Chinese and Russian Federation got the Iraqis Oil that could have paid for the US And US Allies Liberation of Iraq with Decades to Centuries of Iraqis Oil; this loss of Iraqis Oil made the Libyan Oil of Strategic Importance to the US European Allies (President Obama was outsmarted as the Holy Warriors of Islam were already at previous US Ally Egypt doing across the Border Attacks at US Ally Libya). The Fundamentalist Islamic Shia Republic of Iran on longer has to worry about beng stuck between two US And US Allies Military Forces (Iraq and Afghanistan), and the Fundamentalist Islamic Shia Republic of Iran's Special Forces, Quds, training, arming, funding millions of Holy Warriors of Islam at the Fundamentalist Islamic Autonomous Kurdistanis Region (Northern Iraq) do not have to worry about US and US Allies Military interruptions/interdictions.
ALSO DUE TO PRESIDENT OBAMA'S FAILURE FOREIGN POLICIES AS SEEN BY THE AYATOLLAHS OF IRAN AS THE US NEGOTIATING FROM A POSITION OF US DEFEAT, THE AYATOLLAHS OF IRAN INCREASED THEIR OVERT (increasing their 21st Century Military) AND COVERT ACTIVITIES WORLDWIDE (like Overthrows of US Allies Worldwide).
AFTER THE US GOT KICKED OUT OF THE ISLAMIC SHIA NATION OF IRAQ, THE FUNDAMENTALIST ISLAMIC SHIA REPUBLIC OF IRAN CONCENTRATED ON PAKISTAN (their Ally the Muslim Brotherhood would Overthrow the US Ally Egypt). It was known since the British Empire Era that the Pakistanis Sea Ports, Bases (Logistics), Khyber Pass, etc. at Pakistan were Mandatory to support any "British Adventures" at LANDLOCKED Afghanistan. The Fundamentalist Islamic Shia Republic of Iran demanded that the Islamic Nation of Pakistan no longer allow US Military Logistics Support Bases, MQ/RQ (Drone) Bases, etc. at Pakistan. Without these US Military Logistics Support Bases at Pakistan the United Nations Mission Afghanistan can only support 30,000 (including International Aid Workers), the unsupported UN, US, NATO Military Forces must withdraw by 2014; leaving the US Ally Afghanistan to get massacred again, just like before after the US abandoned 1980s US Ally Pro US Afghan Muhajeen to get massacred by the 1990s Fundamentalist Islamic Taliban.
The Fundamentalist Islamic Shia Republic of Iran demands that the Afghans give the Mineral Wealth of Afghanistan to the Ally of the Fundamentalist Islamic Shia Republic of Iran, the Chinese, China Metallurgical Group. China immediately places Restrictions on the Shipments of Minerals to the US And US Allies, so that if anything using these minerals is manufacturered it must be Made In China, this allows the Chinese to "adopt" (steal) any US or US Ally High Tech Designs or Innovations.

Yes, it is now well known history....they were playing with Hussein in the early eighties. Reagan sent Rumsfeld as an envoy in 1983 and he was shown his own famously filmed handshake with Saddam Hussein years later, something he seemed shocked about. Later, Hussein said that he kept denying that they did not have WMD's because he wanted Iran to think he had them for the protection of his country. We knew there was a vendetta started between the Bush camp and Hussein after Bush Sr.'s advice to the Iraqis to rebel against Hussein. This was viewed as a betrayal. Bush Jr. was chomping at the bit to start that war, carrying a personal grudge. They ruined the lives of so many in the land that we know as Eden, and the land itself, a beautiful environment of reeds and rivers hosting an ancient culture. It has taken much work to bring it back by the charity of many on an international level.
What a sickening cruel and horrible tragedy of complete mismanagement and misery. Many well educated liberals protested the start of this war, especially Viet Nam era watchdogs who had followed this all through the eighties. They were called traitors, Congress was intimidated, others were just ignorant or fooled and unfortunately convinced of WMDs and the justification to invade Iraq, the rest is history...here is Rumsfeld's handshake and much more in this excellent documentary.
Yes, do get smarter here folks. Hopefully Karzai and Obama will create future peace and closure to this whole horrible chapter of misery, mismanagement and misunderstanding. It is sadly true, we should have learned after Viet Nam. Enjoy this documentary, it is an eye opener.

David - The 2 wars started by Bush and his Zionist neocon friends, who took over our Pentagon were for energy pipelines. The war in Afghanistan was fore the TAPI gas pipeline, which would pump Israeli owned gas from Turkmenistan - Afghanistan - Pakistan and on to India. Israel stands to make trillions.
The Taliban had to be dealt with before the TAPI pipeline could be built. I am going to guess that Obama has reached an agreement with the Taliban, so they will protect the pipeline instaed of attacking it. It was always about oil and gas. Bush and Cheney are war criminals, who were instrumental in 9/11. I am going to guess you already know these things, because you are a neocon and a propgandist.
www.rense.com/general15/game.htm
The war in Iraq was for a 42 " oil pipeline from Kirkuk to the Port of Haifa in Israel. Read all about it here.
Once the Pentagon's choice to lead the "new" Iraq, Chalabi
promised to reopen an old British-built pipeline from Kirkuk in northern Iraq
to the Israeli port of Haifa. The plan impressed Richard Perle, Douglas Feith
and other conservatives influencing Bush administration policy toward Iraq in
the lead-up to last year's war.
The idea also drew enthusiastic response from Israel.
"The pipeline would be a dream," Yosef Paritzky, Israel's minister
of infrastructures, said as reported by Salon.com. "We'd have an
additional source of supply, and could even export some of the crude through
Haifa. But we'd need a treaty with Iraq . . . to build the pipeline."
Once Chalabi assumed a position of influence in the new Iraqi government,
Israel would get its treaty, the neoconservatives were assured. Read the link. The Israelis admit the pipleline was a part of the deal. Kissinger brought up the idea in the 1990s. Cheney madethe war happen. Our country paid the price.

That's smart, Obamas pulling out the troops in Afghanistan so he can begin his war in Syria.
Obama is doing exactly as he said he would.
Depending on your point of view, the demise of America or the redistributing of wealth of America is now well on its way.
Obama has a new Defense Secretary. Obama has a new Secretary of State. Obama's EPA chief has resigned, thus opening up the Canada to Texas pipeline, aqua filters be damned. Obama declares "victory, sort of" in Afghanistan, (basically giving up on the "US Fight" for the past decade) and now Obama will be able to downsize the US Military Industrial Complex budget, thus assisting the US Budget Deficit, all the while keeping ENTITLEMENTS for Obama voters.
All is well, if one believes in King Obama and his redistributing of wealth policies.
Of course, the effects of Obama and his policies will be felt far past Obama's reign, if the US survives that reign.
You reap what you sow America.
""This war will come to a responsible end,” Obama said."
Hope this will not lead to another irresponsible beginning of wars in Syria and Iran!
Obama will end his presidency, and his legacy will be of shame, inaction and irresponsibility. He is a hands-off, not my job kind of guy. That is the worst kind of leadership. Regardless of how Bush's administration got us to this point, we have no choice but to finish what we started. 1) we look weak, not smart. 2) this area will fund the new terrorist. No longer a farmer, but a professional soldier in need of a job, paid by opium revenues, 3) Pakistan has nukes, the nukes will be in Taliban hands shortly, 4) all Afghan females are now at severe risk, 5) he didn't keep his agenda afterall, Obama was to work with governors and force karzai out or act responsibly, 6) Iran could have actually been called on to assist with preserving the Northern regions, 7) we will lose Eurasia to China, and simultaneously lose Africa, 8) we just affected the social issues in neighboring Iran, the northern Stans, all the way to Moscow...those costs will be felt everywhere, 9) commodity prices will be dictated by China's control over Eurasia, the South China Sea and Africa, 10) the so-called costs of American footprints will pale compared to the future costs of our continuous "take my toys home and cut and run" policies.
BTW, no one is trained. The ANA soldier is merely paid and makes a wage. There is no stability. No ground is controlled. And, they don't react and take the lead when called upon. Those are the facts and the reality. Why? Because no one believes in commitment when your super-power is so willing to leave for the sake of saving a pittance when compared to social and crooked investment issues. Screw the American policy. It is a kick in the face to Americans and Afghans alike. And we all, all hate weakness, a fast buck policy, and a lazy president.
Even for running away from wars, there should be better ways to run than Iraq and Afghanistan.
Why did not Bush run from wars in Iraq and Afghanistan after one year declaring "mission accomplished."?
MtMike,
We survived the Worst President Ever (bush) and his reign or terror that almost ruined our banking and economic systems!
Support role....that means that obama will now take a greater lead in the distribution of the Heroin trade!!
I have a nephew serving in Afghanistan. I will be glad when all the troops are home.
Thank you, Mr. President, for working to get us out of Iraq and now out of Afghanistan. Too many lives have been lost in those unnecessary wars.
border joe,
do you know how out of touch with reality you are?
Bring them all home, yesterday!
One of Obama's greatest legacies will be the fact he took us out of these two lost bush wars! No more body bags for nothing and the right saying, "Freedom isn't Free!' BS!
I bet all you people bitching about being there were all hot for going there after 9/11. Did you think we'd just go and leave in a week "or bomb it into a parking lot"? If you did you're and idiot. Every miltary expert at the time said we would be there for ten years or more. But it didn't matter to you then did it?
We're leaving soon so just be happy for that.
Yes, the Bush Administration played a lot on the emotions that Americans were feeling after 9/11. Many of us wanted justice for the innocent lives that were taken in that terrorist act. Only thing many of us didn't realize at the time was that Bush had a personal vendetta against Saddam Hussein ("that man tried to kill my father!) and Cheney had his own warped personal agenda. They even fooled a decent, respectable man like Colin Powell into believing that WMD nonsense.
That, and the devastating financial crisis the GOP once again thrust us into, are the reasons I will never vote Republican again.
Those on this discussion board who claim this is Obama's war are either blissfully or willfully ignorant of the fact that, as one poster pointed out, had we not gone into Iraq we might quite possibly have ended the Afghan war EVEN BEFORE OBAMA TOOK OFFICE. The fact is the Cheney (oops, meant Bush) administration dropped the ball in Afghanistan by going into Iraq. Troops that could have had a major effect not only on the outcome of the Afghan war but also how soon we might have been able to end it were diverted from Afghanistan to Iraq. During which time, I might add, the Taliban enjoyed a resurgence and were able to become a more potent foe, at a time when we should have been crushing them but couldn't because we didn't have sufficient manpower to do so.
Let's not forget either that the Iraq war was sold to America based on a lie! I am by no means a lover of war, but when we first went into Afghanistan I was one of those cheering for it (right or wrong) because at the time it was home to the Taliban & Al Qaida (and OBL) and we were going in to get some payback. So, what happens? The Cheney (oops, did it again, meant Bush) administration has a colossal ADHD moment and goes into Iraq after non-existent WMD's. At which time I, like most thinking Americans, was all: "Wait! What? WTF?!?" And, oh yeah, let's not forget either that OBL got away!
Our ill-conceived foray into Iraq is, IMO, the biggest reason we're still languishing in Afghanistan. So no, this war is not Obama's war. It's always been Cheney's (sorry, can't help it, meant Bush's) war.
To those of you that can't seem to wrap your heads around the 6 years vs 4 years.....
2008-2012 is 4 years....2012-2014(pullout date) is 2 years....4+2=6....
Hey slick, you want to go kill Taliban...ruck up and move out smartly, I won't stand in your way. Just don't ask any more US Soldiers to do yet another deployment to that sh!thole because you don't like Muslims and don't ask me to pay for it. You know damn well we will change nothing there unless we kill every man, woman and child. If that's your plan I'm sure you can find Afghanistan on a map.
Nope...I always thought boots on the ground in Afghanistan was a bad idea. It hasn't worked out well for anyone from Alexander the Great through the Soviet Union. But then who pays attention to history? We sure the hell don't.
That's you and Dick Cheney's opinion. I suspect most of the American People wouldn't agree with the Project for a New American Century. I suspect you are going to have to sell your neoconservative perpetual war somewhere else.
A responsible end to this war would have been a troop withdrawal in 2004. Let's just get it over with already.
And cut the foreign aid off also.
BUT the U.S. dollars is all Karzai wants the U.S. to leave behind...
dont forget to drop them a little hot egg when we leave. Heat and sand make glass. I say GLAZZZZE 'em!
All this foreign aid is destroying us as a country, more debt - bankrupt America for nations that laugh at us all the way to the bank !!!
This has been going on for too long! I believe we have accomplished what we were there for, To Get Osama Bin-laden. That's done!
Pull all the troops out now! Bring them home and let the Afgan people take care of Afgan problems.
catch,
Foreign aid is 1% of the budget which is really not destroying us as a country.
Put that 1% to our debt, we are broke, that 1% is Billions, Billions & Billions that we need as a poor Country, go thank "W" for the debt !!!
So there was no foreign aid before Bush and you think that is the only reason we are in debt?
WRONG UNEDUCATED Is there a Problem!.
Just after the 9/11 2001 Attacks, President Bush (43) sent his Executive Intelligence Agency into Afghanistan MISSION: Overthrow the Fundamentalist Islamic Taliban Government that was providing Osama Bin Laden and his Fundamentalist Islamic Al Quada with Islamic Sanctuary; And to Locate and Capture Osama Bin Laden. These Missions FAILED (resulting in deaths) due to President Clinton's Gutting of the US Intelligence Agencies, resulting in loss of local Afghan intelligence assets and other local intelligence assets Worldwide; as the Fundamentalist Islamic Taliban Government had locked down Afghanistan tighter than North Korea.
In October 2001 (Afghanistan's near Arctic Winter coming) US Military Asymmetric Warfare Forces attached to the CIA's SAD/SOG went into Afghanistan Mission: Overthrow the Fundamentalist Islamic Taliban Government, and eliminate the Fundamentalist Islamic Al Quada and the Islamic Jihadist (Holy Warriors of Islam) Training Camps that sponsored the 9/11 2001 Attacks:

In 2001 President Bush (43) Delegated the Presidential Authorized Mission of Locating and Capturing Osama Bin Laden to the Director of the CIA, Commander US Military Special Operations Command, Commander US Military Joint Special Operations Command.
It was essential to Capture Osama Bin Laden to obtain his planning processes and thought processes that he imprinted on his Al Quada Leadership so that the US and US Allies could preemptively interdict Al Quada Activities Worldwide.
In 2006 President Bush (43) Amended the US No Assassination Policy (the excuse that President Clinton kept using as to why the US could not Terminate Osama Bin Laden since the 1993 First World Trade Center Bombings). Failing the Capture of Osama Bin Laden the Termination of Osama Bin Laden was Presidential Authorized by President Bush (43) as a Mission Failure (not Capture). President Obama just happened to be in Office.
Harvard International Review Article, 2006, "US No Assassination Policy On The Offensive".
That baloney Demoncrap, "Bush stopped looking for Osama Bin Laden" as negated in the movie, "Zero Dark Thirty", as the CIA's "Little Ms. 100%" was searching for Osama Bin Laden for 16 years (almost an obsession that left her physically gaunt).
The propaganda President Obama video, "SEAL Team Six" shows "Little Ms. 100%" as a tall blonde (there was a reason she was called "Little"), and confuses the other "Little Ms." Director Counter Terrorism National Security Counsel* with "Little Ms. 100%" as being at the Whitehouse Situation Room and not actually here watching the Helicopters take off (what actually happened with "Little Ms. 100%" being here and not at Langley nor the Whitehouse Situation Room).).

Then President Obama, VP Biden, former President Clinton incited the over 1.5 Billion Islamic Believers Worldwide with their Presidential Reelection, "Osama Bin Laden is Dead, GM is Alive".
The over 1.5 Billion Islamic Believers Worldwide respond to "Osama Bin Laden is Dead, GM is Alive" with "Obama, Obama, We Are All Osama".
What President Obama, VP Biden, former President Clinton did was WORSE than the violence caused by the Pastor that threatened to burn the Holy Koran, WORSE than murdering the Pope and bragging while still at Italy, WORSE than any Cartoons of Mohammad. As Osama Bin Laden was Islam's Superstar Holy Warrior of Islam.
The President Obama's "Libyan Rebels" as Al Quada Saudi Arabia (AQ), Al Quada Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), Al Quada Syria (AQS), Al Quada Yemen (AQY), Hezbollah, Al Quada Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), the Libyan Islamic Fighting Group (LIFG), etc. that went to Libya to Kill US Ally President Gaddaffi the Collaborator to the Christians, Jews, Unbelievers, became Ansar Al Shariah to instate and protect Fundamentalist Islamic Laws at Libya then start planning to attack the US Consulate on the date of the Greatest Defeat of the Great Satan (US) by their Superstar Holy Warrior of Islam, Osama Bin Laden, 9/11.
CREATE A CAUSATIVE TIMELINE.
DON'T LET THE FACTS CONFUSE ANY OF YOUR EMOTIVE UNEDUCATED NON FACTUAL OPINONS FURTHER DUMBING DOWN NEWSVINE'S "GET SMARTER HERE".
You have to be the biggest blowhard who ever lived. Both wars were planned and sold by Zionists.
Zionist
warmongers like Ken Adelman and the Zionist Washington Post pushed the war in
an editorial titled, “Cakewalk in Iraq.” Jewish supremacists Richard Perle and
Paul Wolfowitz told you that Iraq would “Welcome us as liberators.” Iraq became
the longest war in American history. Here is a report from USA Today: “Pentagon
officials estimated for the first time Wednesday that up to 360,000 Iraq and
Afghanistan veterans may have suffered traumatic brain injuries.” Now that’s
not counting tens of thousands who have suffered maiming, amputations, or death
in this war based on lies.
This is one way they sold the war. It was going to be a "Cakewalk". Any comments, David?
We wouldn't have to worry about how to get out of these countries, if we had not gone in. Now, someone who likes to portray himslf as an expert in asymmetric warfare, wants us to attack Iran. What an arse. Obama is twice the president as that fool named Bush and his traitorous VP, Dick Cheney. Those 2 war criminals do not dare set foot outside the US, because they would be caught and tried for their crimes against humanity.
Actually foreign aid is part of what made America a superpower, or do we not teach the Marshall Plan in schools anymore? Foreign aid is what gave us our soft power advantage in most of the rest of the world - when we weren't bombing people we claimed to be terrorists or communists or socialists or Marxists or Stalinists or members of the Axis of Evil or heathens or authoritarians or autocrats or totalitarians or in some other way inferior to "exceptional" America - and foreign aid is what is making China a growing superpower of choice in Africa, Asia, and South America; you know the so-called "third world"
What we should be doing about now is comiserating with Great Britan and asking them for advice on how to cope as a former superpower because we haven't been right since peak oil production hit us in 1970 (and really our international politics have never been up to snuff when judged against what we say were about). We're just too fat, rich, beligerent, and armed to the teeth to have sense enough to stand down at this point.
"International forces will no longer be present in Afghan villages, Karzai said, adding that Afghanistan is moving closer to becoming a strong, sovereign state that can stand "shoulder to shoulder" with the United States."
Who is better in imagining: Bush or Obama?
So it is going to be "boots off" the ground and still "tax monies" on the ground in Afghanistan.
In Syria, it is soon going to be "boots on" the ground and more taxes and cuts for unemployed, sick and elderly and helpless in the US.
Bye the bye, Wall Street "experts" have a question: are debts of 16.4 trillion dollars enough?
The Afghans have been "standing up" for years. It's still us leading the way, and as long as we are still there, it will be us leading the way in the future.
What with the terrorism and unstable politics, there is not much chance we could ever establish an oil pipeline through Afghanistan. Besides we now have shale oil and the whole global oil situation is changing. The Chinese got what they wanted in Afghanistan, the copper mines. We were busy fighting a war and they went in and took the mineral wealth. The military industrial complex got what they wanted, lots of weapons and ammo, and fat pensions for the generals. Nothing left for the US to do now but pull out. The sooner the better.
It's unfortunate that we ever got into this senseless war like the one in Iraq. After trillions of $$$, about 7,000 Americans lost, we're still talking about bringing democracy and stability to these countries. Iraq was totally wrong as they never attacked us, but the Afghans basically had no control over militants except for their corrupt leaders. We should just remove our troops and let other nations remain there, but most in their right minds won't. Let nature take its course as they will always fight among one another without our help. Time to tend to our domestic problems at home.
Those 7000 didn't die in vain.
Poet, I can understand the anger at the Iraq war. Justified totally. But calling this war senseless seems a bit short-sighted. Did you feel the same way on September 11, 2001? Because the Afghan war was a direct response to that.... What should we have done? The Taliban was harboring the Al-Qaeda network. Should we have just responded with an , "Alright, just don't let it happen again"?
Poet, My husband is a Marine and currently in Afghanistan.
When people ask him WHY he is still there, he tells them;
"I am over there to keep them (Al Queda) from coming over here (Home)"
To me, that says it all.
It might have been different if clinton would have taken bin laden when he had a chance but declined.
It might have been different if Bush had done something to prevent terrorist attacks before and during 9/11 instead of staring blankly while an attack was in progress and ignoring memos. It might have been different if Bush thought the wars through to the end-game.
Osama is dead. Killed by the current administration. Clinton isn't responsible for the wars. He was retired a long time before this all came to a head.
dante2308
Some of you poor , poor sheep are pathetic. Blame everything on one side & nothing on the other. Some of you idiots will still be flaming Bush when Obama takes us under. You just can't see anything but your hatred for one side or the other.
Kevin speaks the truth.
kevin,
Your statement is ironic. Something about how bad my hate is? You just failed the Turing test. I can't prove you are self-aware.
I can't in good conscience blame Clinton for a war of choice that started 8 months after he left office and a war that started a year and a half after that. I can't in good conscience not find something a little bit disturbing about a 17 minute staring contest while the nation is being attacked. It isn't hate. This should disturb anyone. President reduce to a deer in the headlights? Was there nothing, not one thing, that he could have done with that time?
I found it odd that someone was blaming Clinton for something he had nothing to do with and had no power over. How can you even come up with a statement like that and then call me hateful for pointing out the obvious? But all that aside, prove you are not a bot. Make a self-aware statement.
grab,
There is nothing worse that someone agreeing with someone who doesn't make any sense... Try again.
As I recall, Clinton did want to take out Bin Laden, but since he was fighting a stupid impeachment over a BJ, he was accused of trying to wag the dog.
I treasure every dollar Ken Starr wasted on his witch hunt looking into supposed shady dealings with Whitewater and the only thing he came up with was Monica. If Clinton had fessed up instead of lying, they would have had nothing.
I find it interesting that we went after Afghanistan instead of Saudi Arabia where all the hijackers came from. Bin Laden was just hanging with his buddies the Taliban, scum for sure, but it seems we were there just long enough to gear up for Iraq.
Obama was just finishing what we started there and abandoned. We certainly stirred up enough unrest there that they would have been gunning for us. We gave them reason enough, like we thought we had a reason to hit them, revenge, pure and simple(minded).
Dante,
Can you please quote a source for your 17 minutes? Yes, Bush received intelligence that an attack was coming but there was never anything specific so it is hard to stop something like that in a country this big with so many flights.
The criticism on Clinton is he knew about Bin Laden and had chances but failed to act. Do you really believe that our intelligence community did not know about him and his terror network before Jan. 20th. 2001?
jerry,
It's very hard to stop a terrorist attack, it is very easy to do nothing. I guess the first excuses the latter. Can't have our presidents working too hard. That's what really got me. The claim that Bush kept us safe when there were multiple terrorist attacks including 9/11 under his watch. As for the 17 minutes, just let me know the acceptable period of time and I'll refer you to a video that exceeds that length of time.
Someone at the FAA and someone in NYC was responding in the vacuum so I don't want to hear anything about there was nothing he could have done. I mean just staring there. That is just impossible to comprehend. Ask a follow up question to "America is under attack." It could have been a nuclear attack. Geez.
The criticism here of Clinton is that somehow the wars were Clinton's fault since I thought that was the topic. One wonders how from Jan 20th, 2001 to January 21st, 2009 it is Clinton's fault for not catching Bin Laden. Was there not 9 months of time for Bush to go ahead and catch the guy considering Clinton apparently dropped the ball? What does bin Laden even have to do with Bush's mismanagement of Afghanistan?
Dante,
I do not believe that nothing was being done, and if that is the case then the fault lies with the intelligence community. I am not blaming Clinton for this as it is hard to find a person in the mountains if they do not want to be found and are being protected by the governments, but that does not mean all of 9/11 can be blamed on Bush.
I remember that when I heard about the first plane I thought it was an accident and it was only when the second hit that people knew it was a terrorist attack. Should he have gotten up and ran out, maybe, but you make a decision at the time not to panic people.
You also blame Bush for his mismanagement of Afghanistan but do you believe President Obama was correct in tripling our troops there which resulted in more deaths
TO: Kevin D. Hoke who wrote:
I thought Republicans were all about "taking personal responsibility" but obviously that too is just another lie.
The fact is, Republicans are running away from responsibility just as fast as they can, and trying to blame others for their blatant lies, and their devastating mistakes.
What did you think when Bush stood up and proclaimed himself "The Decider"?
What did you say, "Oh he can't be "responsible" because he's incompetent""?
TO: jerry l-1335133 who wrote:
As Bush himself said "There's only one President at a time."
Bush had complete control, he was commander in chief, and instead of going straight after the bad guys, he released over 100 members of Bin Laden's family members without allowing them to 1st be questioned by the FBI, and he did so IMMEDIATELY after the 9/11 attacks when no American could fly.
Now that was some mighty FAST work, locating over 100 family members and getting them all on plane. It's almost as if Bush had that information readily at hand, otherwise, how he do that so fast?
Some folks might call that act alone "treason", or at the very least, letting the bad guys get away.
It is a fact that, as long as Bush was in office, Bin Laden was safe.
jerry,
I don't agree with the objectives of the war regardless of who is in charge. If Obama was planning to turn the tide against the Taliban, then yes, the surge was effective and vast swaths of Afghanistan have come back under coalition control. At Bush's departure things were getting and had been getting worse for some time with no response or at least not an effective one.
I'm far more inclined to support departure. As for casualties, preventing US deaths wasn't the objective of the surge either as it was a strategic move. The issue is whether or not Bush effectively managed the war and reached his objectives. He did not. If he can't reach his own objectives, whether or not I agree with them, then he failed. It isn't complex.
As for staring blankly in order to not panic us, that's a bit flimsy. We knew far more about the attack than he did at that point (itself an issue) so really, the problem at hand was what to do about it or in his case asking for even a single detail beyond that we were attacked.
Watching Bush being dumbstruck and very visibly panicking for an extended period of time didn't help me feel more secure personally. It is just not the way things are done. You don't just fail to respond. There are calm, acceptable ways to leave a room inside of that LONG period of blank stares. If this was a president who couldn't excuse his way out of an elementary school classroom to save a country then I don't understand how he concluded that he could manage two wars. All that was standing between him and responding to an attack on the nation was gracefully leaving a classroom and he failed to overcome that hurdle for all that time? One wonders how he managed to navigate his pants in the morning.
Even in the most generous analysis, when does it become acceptable to let a country be annihilated (for all he knew) and worry mostly about panicking elementary schoolers? What were they going to do? Be curious? Wonder why he left quickly? Oh no, we can't have that. Those kids might actually formulate an appropriate response to the situation several times faster than the president.
American Girl,
According to the 9/11 commission that really never happened. I am putting the link from Snopes.com
http://www.snopes.com/rumors/flights.asp
Dante,
I actually think we should have left Afghanistan a long time ago as there was no way we were going to be successful. If Bush's objectives were to clean out Al Qaeda from Afghanistan then you can say he was partially successful as the have moved their headquarters to Yemen but they still exist which goes against what President Obama has recently stated.
I am not saying Bush was correct in how long he stayed but I am giving him the benefit of the doubt because it was an event that never happened before and I do not know what the correct reaction would have been.
I was going to mention the flights for the bin Laden family. That was nearly all Bush accomplished that day wasn't it? Can anyone else name a response to the attack that day?

As far as Intelligence pertaining to the 9/11 2001 Attacks due to the previous President Clinton's Gutting of the US Intelligence Agencies that were previously built up by Director of the CIA Bush (President 41) the US was Blind and Deaf to the Events leading up to the 9/11 2001 Attacks per the Bipartisan US Congressional 9/11 Commission (Committee) Investigations, Findings and Recommendations with former President Clinton saying, "I'm a so sorry".

I want my Pres to wake up everyday and sign the death warrants of the Taliban and Al Qaeda.
What on earth are youy saying? You want more war? More deficits? More cuts to the budget that hurt seniors and kids?
Hate is ugly. Give it a rest. 10 years is long enough to hate.
Dorfy,
Are we the ones who are hating or the ones being hated? If you recall we were the ones that were attacked and responded, or do you think we should say "please do not do that again" and hold hands in a circle singing Kumbaya ?
With Obama in charge a responsible conclusion to anything is impossible.
i thought he concluded iraq just fine, or do you disagree?
Cheeseman:
So, no "mission accomplished" huh?
Obama did nothing to end Iraq you ........never mind. That was an agreement entered into by Bush before he left office. Stop with the false God crap.
Vermont, Obozo likes to take credit for the end of Iraqi war, but he had nothing to do with it. It was all in writing by Bush before the end of his presidency.
In fact, Obozo wanted to keep support troops in Iraq longer, but the Iraqi government wouldn't allow it.
Janine,
Bush failed to negotiate a status of forces agreement. He maintained that he really, really wanted to continue that engagement unless you forgot. You don't get credit for doing what the incoming president promised to do two weeks before you leave office. Bush started the war, messed up the war, and Obama actually managed it to it's conclusion.
If you want another war Obama successfully executed, there is Libya. If you need an objective Bush failed to achieve, Osama was taken out 2 years after Bush left office and 10 years after Bush declared it his primary objective (7 years after he said it was no longer his objective).
As for the second status of forces agreement, the defense department tried to negotiate a continued non-combat presence, Bush (failed) to negotiate a combat presence. Either way, Obama ended the combat portion of the war a full year before the SOFA expired so the war ended regardless and only because Obama decided it would.
Well, he did have one loose end to sew up, and that a "Status of Forces Agreement", which is declared and signed by all parties involved. and institutes how many (if any) residual forces will remain, and what their EXACT role is to be. The only problem is that he sent the very same person he put in charge of "listening" to various parties concerning the latest debacle in Washington, Mr. Joe "Bite Me" Biden. Ineptitude at it's very best.
obama concluded Iraq-wait we are still there-on a predetermined (by who oh yeah) schedule. It wasn't his.
Bob is stuck in the year 2009. Who is in Iraq exactly?
Dante,
The security agreement calls for U.S. combat forces to leave Iraqi cities by June 30. All American troops would be out by the end of 2011.
http://usatoday30.usatoday.com/news/world/iraq/2008-12-14-bush-iraq_N.htm
I thought on Libya it was the French and the British that had the lead and we were behind them.
The troops left combat roles at the end of August 2010 which was 10 months before they had to leave anywhere under SOFA. A war ends when the combat ends unless we are now redefining English. If we are and we have decided to expand the definition of war to standing around and training people then we need to build a consensus and contact Webster. Until such a time, let's keep the current definition in play. No combat, no war.
Obama ended the combat on his own schedule, therefore Obama ended the war.
Bush singing an agreement had zero correlation to the end date of the war. In fact it had little to do with anything considering we completely left Iraq before that deadline too.
Dante,
The last troops left December 11, 2011, which is what the treaty said. I also remember that President Obama wanted to keep 5,000 troops there but the Iraqi government refused to give them immunity so they left.
I am happy the war is over and we are out but it was a combination of both leaders who ended it.
TO: Talk to the Hand who wrote:
LOL!
Bush said the War in Iraq would NOT end as long as he was in office.
Bush also knew that whoever followed him into the White House would eventually end the war so Bush tried to take credit for what he already knew was an inevitable.
Bush wasn't even in office when President Obama pulled out our troops, and I don't believe Bush could make any kind of Order to be carried out AFTER he left office. THAT would be up to the office holder himself to decide.
Plus, I seem to recall Republicans screaming and crying to end the Iraqi War and complained that President Obama was taking too long, now you want to claim President Obama acted on George "Curveball" Bush's Orders, after Bush no longer had the authority to enforce any "Order"?
jerry,
NO. That is not what Obama said.
2008 from Obama campaign website:
Then in 16 months, this is from a news article:
For these troops of the 4th Stryker Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division, it was a moment of relief fraught with symbolism. Seven years and five months after the U.S.-led invasion, the last American combat brigade was leaving Iraq, well ahead of President Barack Obama's Aug. 31 deadline for ending U.S. combat operations there.
So, yes he had the last US troop leave Iraq the next year, but the war ended a year earlier on his PROMISED schedule and a YEAR earlier than Bush's failure of an irrelevant SOFA.
Seriously, it's like the people who claim Obama promised to end the Afghan war in his 2008 campaign. How is bush even related to the war ending in August 2010? Unless we are still doing the thing where standing around is a war. Is that what we're doing?
TO: jerry l-1335133 who wrote:
No, Halliburton wanted 5,000 troops left there to protect Halliburton while it continued to load up the trucks and oil tankers with Iraqi Oil, which President Obama refused to do.
Dante,
Here is from your quote:
"By the end of this month, 50,000 troops will be serving in Iraq. As Iraqi Security Forces take responsibility for securing their country, our troops will move to an advise-and-assist role. And, consistent with our agreement with the Iraqi government, all of our troops will be out of Iraq by the end of next year."
We are actually just arguing over semantics of what is war. You do not think 50,000 troops training is war and I contend that it is, but I thank all involved that we are out and not losing any more brave men and women
American Girl,
From the New York Times
"In June, diplomats and Iraqi officials said that Mr. Obama had told Mr. Maliki that he was prepared to leave up to 10,000 soldiers to continue training and equipping the Iraqi security forces. Mr. Maliki agreed, but said he needed time to line up political allies."
http://www.nytimes.com/2011/10/22/world/middleeast/united-states-and-iraq-had-not-expected-troops-would-have-to-leave.html?_r=0
He pulled all of the troops out because the Iraqi government would not grant immunity to the military.
jerry,
If you contend that training people is a war, then we are at war with most of our allies and many of our frenimies. Clearly this is absurd unless you are also contending that we are at war with nearly everyone in the Western and Northern Hemispheres and a good bit of the rest. Unless you are, then you have redefined the war in Iraq to suit a political point.
I contend that the August 31st, 2010 deadline for the end of combat operations is significant and completely unrelated to Bush or Bush's goal and objectives. Bush has never once advocated ending the Iraq war so one wonders how it is he gets credit for it except to try to diminish the current president.
There is no universe in known existence where Bush can be credited for bringing peace to Iraq.
Bring our troops home, put them at the mexico border instead...
I just got back from Afghanistan and I can almost gurantee you it is more dangerous south of the U.S. border. Thats not a bad idea
Considering that we have groups (cartels) invading our country with weapons (drugs) that kill US citizens on a regular basis, all for their own profit, I'd say they've declared war with us, and need to be dealt with appropriately.
The only reason you said to put the troops on the border is you do not like mexicans. Tell the truth don't beat around bush. If you are afraid of someone who can't speak english stealing your job you need to go back to school and get an education.
I don't care where you come from if you're here legally. But I do think we need to protect our country from people coming in illegally, especially if they're bringing a bunch of drugs along for the ride.
(I'd also support streamlining and properly funding our immigration system, so those that follow the rules don't run out of time on their visas before the paperwork is even processed.)
YOU WERE TOLD BEFORE OVER AND OVER AGAIN. ILLEGAL, AS IN AGAINST US LAWS (USE OF ACTIVE DUTY US MILITARY WITHIN THE US) AND:
AGAINST PRESIDENT OBAMA'S POLICIES APRIL 2009 AND AUGUST 2009, "US MILITARY WILL NOT BE USED TO SECURE US BORDERS".
And before you say anything else that is uneducated, a State's Militia aka National Guard with their Commander In Chief being that State's Governor is NOT the same as Federal Active Duty US Military.
I want to clear up the National Guard being misinterpreted as a militia. People are quite ill informed.
What is the definition of "militia" again?
The National Guard is an active duty branch of the US Army, although the term "National Guard" can be misinterpreted as being a militia, the National Guard is given a federal salary, federal weapons, federal uniforms, federal vehicles, and also have a fixed term of service. If they were a militia, there wouldn't be detachments of them in Afghanistan, why would a force that's role is to be a defensive force be taking on offensive operations in Afghan?
I have no idea where David came up with the Commander in Chief of the NG being that states governor, though. Still looking into some info to present to clear up any last minute confusion.
Peace will never come from Afghanstan. We could stay 50 more years and it won't come. 90% of Opium is in Afghanstan. The Drug Lords will be fighting for it till 3013 or more in war lord wars. We might as well pack up today and being our troops home. They are in the middle of a place they don't belong today.
If it's for victory only. Our brave troops have already won in a victory of getting the Taiban out of Afghanstan govt. The mission was this purpose and killing Bin Laden and a few Alqueda leaders. Mission accomplished.
Okay, taking a break from the fart story for bit.
Say what you will about Obama, and how this war should have been ended long ago, but getting our troops home this year is a good thing. Still skeptical, but hoping for the best.
He didn't say anything about getting troops home... IF you bothered to read, he's talking about INCREASING our presence in that region....
"Obama was also clear that while Afghan forces will “take the lead” in any future military operations, American troops will continue fighting alongside them."
How does that signal a drawdown??
Karzi is fukking snake I hope the next president doesn't let him bleed us dry with foreign aid if that piece of garbage is still around.
Karzai, how is your Swiss bank account doing?
Probably about as well as Mitt Romney's Swiss bank account.
NICE...
No, it's more like John Kerry the traitor that just sold his phoney-baloney network to an arab network. John Kerry now worth more than Romney. You remember, the John Kerry that wants to raise your taxes, but registers his boat in another State to avoid paying taxes of how much was it, I think around $500,000.
Kerry a typical democrat. Do as I say not as I do
Hockey,
Mark Sanford is a typical Republican, but what's all this with Kerry? Was that anti-arab racism thrown in there? Is this 2004?
"Hockey", it was actually the demigod and "green" leader of the Democrats, Mr. Al "I invented the Internet" Gore who recently sold his network to Al Jazeera, and not Kerry. Kerry is much more content with marrying into the Heinz fortune. You are correct about his little "dingy" though, and the measures he took to avoid paying his "fair share" of the tax burden that only the rich would know. But don't worry, both of their Caymen Islands and Swiss bank accounts are doing just fine, probably more so than that evil Romney!
Hockey-lotsa-numbers, it was Al Gore who sold Current TV to Al-Jazeera, not John Kerry. If you're going to throw stones, make sure you're not holding potatoes first.
Foreign Aid must end at the same time that the troops are pulled - period. The American people are fed up with trying to support the whole damn world. It's time we take care of our own - and that does not mean illegals.
I understand why we went; but we should have been out a long time ago. Better then how the Russians left though, but not by much.
How so?
"Obama was also clear that while Afghan forces will “take the lead” in any future military operations, American troops will continue fighting alongside them."
Where do you get the idea we're leaving anywhere??
"After a long and difficult past, we finally are, I believe, at the last chapter of establishing ... a sovereign Afghanistan that can govern and secure itself for the future," Panetta told Karzai
B.S. As soon as we pull out the Taliban will pour in from the hills and everything will be the same as before. Let's kill as many of them as possible before we come home. A dead Taliban is a good Taliban.
we would never leave if we had that attitude.
"Grababrewski", all we have to do is wait until those animals cower in the mountains during the winter, as that they cannot get through the passes until spring, and lob a couple hundred "daisy cutters" their way. But I can just hear the left, "But...but...but that's inhumane!!". Yeah, tell that to Daniel Pearl.
Although I do believe you will eventually be right about the Taliban taking back control, I do not think it will happen as soon as everyone believe it will. They will need years to rebuild to actually be a force again. But a country as backwards and f*cked up as Afghan will always revert back to what it was.
Its funny when I was there every single afghanny person was happy to see me and shake my hand and put on a smile, but 5 minutes later if I didnt have candy to give to the kids I would have rocks thrown at me. Disgusting people. Disgusting world. I wish we could just send every liberal over there to spew their ideology to them.
Corky/Why would you wish to send all of we Liberals to Afghanistan? Many of us were well aware that it was an area where historically foreign forces would never win a realistic control of . Any Westerner with a sense of history knows this and have even pointed this out as soon as this conflict was sought. It was The Political reps. and the industrialists who decided that even as some of us, the Liberals ,pointed out the futility of the action. We would be a lot further ahead keeping our money and troops here and protecting our own shores. I am sure that it would be sensible for you to study My philosophy rather than blindly spew your hatred of it.
And once again the jackwagon appologizes/ sells the United States short. The US has fallen "...short of the ideal..." What a piece of work this poser is.
Maybe Obama should wear robes and a Fez? Karsai looks more presidential(royal), dictatorial than Obama!
What the heck are you talking about? Since when doesn't the President wear anything other than a suit during these meetings? If he were wearing robes and a Fez you'd be crying about him bowing down to Muslims or something. Give it a rest.
buffalo-791218 I heard this afternoon that Obama and Karzai and were fighting over the prayer rug
Get the troops out. Cut millitary spending and ban domestic ammo!!
Hell no, we need it for all of the progessive buckhunter's!
Military spending is actually one of the good things congress blows our money on. The vast majority of it stays here and creates job.
Yeah, military and national guard were nothing but unemployment and welfare jobs , but under Bush/ Cheney they found a use for them! and they did something useful rather than sit around and PLAY soldier. they WERE a soldier. I was a soldier once!
For as long as it took to flunk out of cooking school, no doubt...
Military spending like the billions we spend nation-building are more important than and more useful to Americans than schools? Typical conservatism. We must use tax payer dollars to support corporations to buy goods that have no use but to literally blow themselves up in regions that have zero impact on our safety and well being.
When did corporate welfare become a thing? Where do you think the domestic spending is spent that's worse than spending a trillion dollars on Iraq and losing 30 billion in cash in a truck somewhere. "One of the good things" indeed. It's only the military sending that gets spent outside the country save for a tiny, tiny sliver of foreign aid.
Any kid that enlists under Obama is wasting their life! stay unemployed, and safe. This guy will sell you down the river in a new york second! he cares less about the military. Typical progressive demonrat. The second term will likely be more incompetent than the first looking at the nominations.
Hate much?
I hate progessives.
Obviously.
buffalO,
That's irrational. Obama focuses on raising vet benefits and military pay and cuts from the part of the budget that send the troops out for pointless wars. What exactly has he done to show he doesn't care about soldiers. The GOP keeps voting down vet bills and salivating over new engagements with no thought of the soldiers.
At least under Obama, the troops have body armor, the wars have an end, and you get taken care of when you get back home. Under Bush, not so much.
not so...just ask my amputated wife...she got nothing out this POS POTUS!
//Troops will have a new mission in Afghanistan, Obama said, which will include the training, advising, and assisting of Afghan forces and will set the stage for a further reduction of coalition forces.//
THE SAME AS BUSH'S PLAN yet Obama and Hillary constantly bombarded the Conservatives for their decision , now thats the same decision and, this is supposed to be news?...
Barabas,
Democrats rejected the Iraq surge and that was because Iraq was an inane and pointless war with no bearing on anything exact to make things worse.
Bush's had no actual plan for Afghanistan and infact neglected it for many years until the Taliban had retaken most of the east by the time Obama came to office. If Bush was planning anything, he should have done it inside of 7 years and not left a hot mess getting worse as a parting gift. But then again, he did the same with the economy so it's par for the Bush.
Alex, she got an amputation no?
What exactly would you have him do?
Hmmm. Strange. I remember a President say we would step in and help Viet Nam if they needed it. Seems as it came out as the longest deadly fighting grounds and destroyed many American lives. But look who we have for a President. Doesn't even know what a battleground looks like, let alone a uniform.
Yeah Skipster, and that president was a democrat!
Be fair. He was a community organizer. That's good enough to be commander-in-chief in this country.
grab,
To be fair, he did that during college 25 years ago and has been working in public service since...
It's strange that people will fixate on these things.... Mitt Romney was a missionary. Does that make him a Commander in Chief? Does anything Romney every did make him qualified to be president? I can cut taxes on the rich and raise them on the poor. That was basically it...
Anyway, the current resume includes managing three different wars and very well compared to his predecessor I might add. I must ask, does being a pretend cowboy or an actor make you qualified? What is the Republican standard exactly?
Coyotehunter,
I remember a Democrat defeating Hitler and a Democrat defeating Hirohito.
skipster,
You have your timeline wrong, the current engagement started a few days or so (or was it 7 years) before Obama came on and the article is about removing ourselves from the theater. The war Obama started, Libya, took 6 months and cost zero lives. Good record so far.
um Bush didn't go to war or have the qualifications to oversee a war either and i didn't see you guys complaining then....
Dante- thank you! It's not like you can go to college and major in WAR. what are the ideal qualifications of a war-time president?
Well to be fair, McCain graduated in the bottom 1% in his class at Naval Academy so I guess he sort of majored in war. He didn't major in or learn what a smart war or diplomacy is and somehow missed that war is actually a bad thing which really blows my mind considering his experience. It's like he actually hates the soldiers and wants them shipped out of the country forever.
lol true true. he was IN the classroom which i guess is better than Obama....
why you all looking for a perfect leader? I mean everyone would call him a tyrant and his supreme nature as a valiant knight would certainly rattle the liberals, even if the guy protected the so called best nations, people and societies.
Barabas,
A bad leader fails to protect the peace, a good leader knows how to ensure it...
As for a valiant knight, I'm not sure exactly what that would entail or what you are referring to. I'm also not sure who these best "people" are. I don't think liberals are in with classify groups of people and nations as superior and then going to war to "protect" them. I think we had a couple guys go down that route and it took a liberal (FDR) to take them out.
Karzai speaks with fork tounge. Please let them alone to fester in their
own mess.
Just like obbomie the commie.
@Hockey
Ah, shut up, you lousy dunghead. Take your "obbomie the commie" nonsense and shove it up your ass.
ampillion/Give hockey a chance,he had a little schooling in the fifties and that was it. The only other thing that he devoloped was rage at everyone and everything else. Hockey ,go and join you're buddy, grab a few ,and try to make a list of all the people and thoughts that you both hate.
Just funny how you make a comment about that racist in the White House, and all the demoncrats start spewing their hate... but when President Bush was in office, you could spew your anti Bush statements all the time and get an applause... not so nice when the shoe is on the other foot, eh?
Fact is, that racist in the White House WILL go down as THE WORST President this Country has EVER seen...
IF you don't believe me, exactly WHY do you think he's doing such a good job??
A responsible end would be to have carpet bombed the entire region...waited 6 months and then carpet bomb it again....within 6 months of this so called responsible end to war in afghanistan, the taliban will be back in power, and the warlords will be killing each other, these people live this way, we will not change them, no one ever has or will....Nobamas a fool to think otherwise, Karzai just wants us around till he can gather enuf dollars to live richly in another country, if he stays there they'll(taliban) will be playing soccer with his head.
I love the smoke-and-mirrors, we still have 17,000 civilian troops in Iraq-remember Blackwater- we have no military troops there but 17,000 Pentagon indirectly paid non-military troops- love the logic- but then again perception is a bigger player than truth- we spent over 2 billion on the largest complex ever to hold them... so my mind wonders who will we leave in Afghanistan?
well, they at least volunteer, and do something! since they are private contractors, they are not on the welfare and gov. jobs program.
Word "buffalo"! I'd like to see some of the left posters on this site get thier slimy butts overseas, away from home and family, and STILL carry on and complete the mission. Any takers? (cue crickets chirping...)
I think you are the moronic teabagger I used to see in The Boregonian. You dinosaur right wingers are a dying breed. And amen to that.
Hey, "buckhumper", when exactly did you serve your nation? Again, I hear them crickets...
"free and fair elections in afghanistan" :) :) :) this joker makes me laugh!
Leave those backward, illiterate, oppressive dirt dwellers to their horrible misery. The opium trade will begin to flourish again though so al-Queda will get new capital infusions
Ulysesses,
you lost me, when you stated, “Leave
those backward, illiterate, oppressive dirt dwellers to their horrible misery.”
Were you talking about Obama’s drones in urban America or the Afghans?
Good question. It could really go either way.
Support role? Leave a box of jock straps and move out smartly. Time to guard a post on the mexican border.
