The so-called attorney for 3 of the rapists from December is already spinning some outlandish, outdated "blame the victim" BS. That culture and mindset isn't going to change overnight, if ever.

The attack [and murder] in December seems to have created enough outrage to encourage more victims to come forward and report. That's the only minute shred of -- positivity in this. I cannot even begin to imagine having to live in that kind of fear, as these women do. We aren't perfect here in the USA by a long shot, but it's nothing close to what women in other parts of the world experience.

They were made in America and cost around $72 for a pair. After the company was sold to a bigger one, I noticed that they were being made in China, definitely at lower production costs. Texas, you have traveled outside the United States, but I have lived in developing and under-developed countries for extensive periods of time. I am so sick of people who claim that they have "traveled" outside the US, but all they did was go on a vacation to some resort but never take the time or interest to interact or get to know the local people. PeopleFirst; Absolutely! I lived in 3 European countries in 10 years. It was wonderful, but only if you assimilate. Europeans (like many Americans) want you to be like them because it validates them, and they don't like things that beg attention, like being an 'obvious' American might. The language is not a barrier to interaction if you never expect them to speak English to you, although most Germans, for example, learn English in school, and love to practice on you (especially after hearing my German). Spaniards and Italians I met, not as much, but in any country it's the attempt that is important; it makes them happy because in accepting and using their language, you are accepting them, and that helps them accept you. Never, never, think that you are better than them...a little humility goes a long way. I realize that this is difficult for a lot of Americans; being humble is almost a lost art.

It's going to be a challenge to turn things around in India - the social structure and total lack of regard for women by so many men in that country is probably not going to be changed overnight but more likely years. And yeah, look at any number of countries to see the total disregard for women - some of it based on religous tenants.

SSH, I keep reading about how there is a lack of regard for women by men in India. That is so untrue. The problem is the lax laws and corruption there. Rapists are the same all over the world. EVERY SOCIETY has it's share of troubles/crime but the USA is by far better at Justice than any other country.... India doesn't even prosecute the men for ANY sex crimes... until they make the news now they are FORCED for appearance sake to prosecute.... There are (according to the net) no figures on how many have got the death penalty for rape.

Freedom, I agree that our laws protect us better that India's. However, this IS all about the crime. Rapes happens in every country and we cannot paint every citizen of a particular country with the same brush stroke. Most of these posters are talking about how Americans are so much better than Indians, and I say there are good and bad people worldwide.

Until recently, American law seldom gave protection against the crime of rape.

We are an armed society and rapes happen here everyday. It goes to show that guns do not stop rape because not everyone is armed, even when they are allowed to be armed. And in Clackamas Mall there was a CCW holder, and he chose not to fire because he was concerned with hitting a bystander behind the shooter. The shooter then saw the armed man, and the next shot was the one that killed the shooter. Draw your own conclusions, but it certainly seemed a CCW shortened the shooting.
