Report: Six suspects held over another India bus gang rape

Indian police personnel present six arrested men, accused of a gang rape in Punjab state, Sunday.

Updated at 8:39 p.m. ET: Six suspects have been arrested over the rape of a woman on a bus in northern India, just weeks after the gang-rape and murder of a student sparked nationwide protests, reports said early Sunday.

Police say a 29-year-old woman was a lone passenger on a bus to her village in northern Punjab state on Friday when she was attacked, The Associated Press reported.

The driver and conductor allegedly refused to stop at her village and instead drove her to a desolate location. They took her to a nearby building where they were joined by friends and raped her repeatedly, the AP said.

The woman went to a police station in the morning to file a complaint. Six of the seven suspects have been arrested, Reuters reported.

The issue of rape has taken center stage in India, where a 26-year-old woman said she was raped through the night Friday by six men. NBC's Duncan Golestani reports.

The apparent case follows the gang rape and fatal beating of a medical student on a New Delhi bus in December, which sparked protests in India over national attitudes to violence against women and made headlines around the world.

Despite the heightened awareness of the way sex crimes are dealt with, the Times of India reported that the latest victim was publicly named by police in Punjab – a move the newspaper described as “completely insensitive.”

"Six men have been arrested on allegations of having raped a 29-year-old woman... after forcibly taking her to an unknown location on the night of January 11," local police officer Raj Jeet Singh said, according to Agence France-Press.

Police say they arrested six suspects on Saturday and are searching for one other, AFP said.

I wonder if India still employs this form of the death penalty, I know they still used it 25 years ago. They bring out the convict and drag him past a crowd who hurl items like rotten fruit & feces at him chained to the back leg of a sacred white bull elephant. After passing by the crowd, he's dragged to the center of the area, unchained and then the sacred white bull elephant steps on and slowly crushes his head.

Take a very long and good look at this pattern of behavior all you Obama supporters especially those single women. This is your future as Obama pushes his pro Muslim and specifically pro Muslim Brotherhood agenda.

Wonder if it was "legitimate rape." Then the body has a way of "shutting that pregnancy down", you know. Until we get f*ckers like rapemongering Republicans out of office (or seeking it) we're not a whole lot better in how we treat women here.

I wonder if this is being kept under wraps in India or is it general news....I say put those turbans to better use as tourniquets and lets see how long they last then???

We care about rape in the USA, but it doesn't stop it. What about the high school girl where the people are trying to cover it up because the "boys" are football players? Don't be ignorant, don't stereotype and don't generalize. By the way, not all Indian men wear turbans.

I completely agree with RIPoster. My attitude about India and their ill treatment and disrespect for Indian women is appauling. As a female, I recommend that ALL AMERICAN WOMEN BOYCOTT INDIA. No travel there because it is so dangerous for us!! Do not give this country your tourist money, stay away for your own protection. I certainly hope this country does not give India money either, that could be misconstrued as support of their bad behaviors. I now HATE INDIA. HATE is really not strong enough of a word for how I feel about their men. It is also giving me a bad idea of Indian men in the USA. If they were raised in India they will have the same attitude here in the USA toward women...dangerous to American women. I plan to boycott everything India-produced even restaurants in the USA. F INDIA!!!!

          To Lisa in Dallas:

          You are quite ignorant.

There are 1.3 Billion people in India. Even if one million people hopped on one foot, while drinking a slurpee, it would be a tiny fraction of the total population.

99% of Indians are law abiding, decent, family-oriented folks.

Look around. Read a paper. There are rapes and worse every day in the USA.

PS: Don't think the rest of the world has a great impression of America. ( Gosh, with all the mass shootings, pedophilia, and other crazy happenings here).

Countries like India, Far East, Middle East, people there are more interested in what type of cloth they can obtain to wrap their brain in instead of becoming interested in human rights. India as far as I'm concerned is and has always been a 4th world country, when you are starving and cattle are permitted to run through your business and house and you cannot chase them away, something is really wrong with them.

I bet the entire story is fictional. Why are the faces covered with hoods?

Uncover the faces of these men for all the world to see. Have their faces permanently labeled as rapists for everyone to see.

The reason their faces are covered is because the entire story is a sham.

So glad the Obama administration wants to make it easier so these pigs can become Americans and take our welfare and abuse our women. Oh....and any company that sends work there should be boycotted by every American woman. That includes Comcast, Carlson co's etc, etc. The only thing these pigs understand is their pockets and whats between their legs. If I were an Indian man I would be ashamed.

"Your" women are stupid if they allow any man to abuse them. Rapists won't single out "your" women; they will rape regardless of race. Indians that come to our country are either more educated than you or richer than you, so you don't have to worry.

Mr. RIposter are you a highly emotional, irrational and low IQ person, or just prejudiced but do not want to admit it? If Indians saw the number of mass murders, gun ownership, children being molested by priests and university coaches, mothers killing their children (including Casey Anthony, and a man who kept his son in a cage and then starved him to death) in the United States they'd think you are no worse than barbarians...except you'd be seen as wearing lots of suits, driving fancy cars and speaking English...as violence against women are perpetuated.

America is the most violent society in the world. The number of women who get raped in the US is close to 90,000 per year. Per year! That is out of 350 million. India has over 1 billion people and the number of rapes, even if you triple those that are reported (to balance for under reporting), you'd still get less than the US.

In America not many White men go around in gangs threatening and raping women in buses...they are too individualistic for that. But in the US White men have raped Black women and children in large numbers historically. It was both a culture and officially sanctioned - like Frat boys peeing on sorority girls as a ritual of passage.

The US also has the largest number of serial rapists and stalking rapists. They rape, and then ritualistically torture and murder their victims. Research has shown that America leads in this kind of violence next only to apartheid South Africa at the time of White rule.

Acquaintance rape is also very high in the US...where boyfriends or ex boyfriends, or co workers rape. The number of sexual assaults on illegal immigrant women in the US by employers and co-workers is high too. Many women do not report it due to fear of deportation. There are employers who expect sexual favors from their co-workers or employees...but they don't call it rape or assault.

We also have the highest number of rape that occurs under a gun that does not get reported and treated as consensual sex because the victim is seen as "not resisting" (though she is submitting under a gun), and maybe too hesitant to prosecute because she is afraid the assailant will come after her again. In the 70s and 80 the number of women victims who were killed because they were pressing charges was very high. Ask your nearest police center or sheriff's office to provide you with the statistics.

We also have the highest number of children and elderly who are sexually abused in schools, in nursing homes, in camps and in their own homes.

America has also the highest number of gay rapes in prisons.

Rape of children in churches and other organizations...including in sports is only now making headlines.

Mr. RIposter may I suggest you go talk to excellent American women social scientists and feminists in your community to get an accurate picture about what is going on in your country...right under your nose. If you know the numbers and the truth you are lucky that countries like India, China, Germany, Canada or Brazil want to do business with you and the US.

Rape in the US is nothing to make fun off...which is why some Conservatives are calling for Sharia like laws where they could execute, cut off hands or legs, gorge the eyes or castrate the perpetrators. If you sit in court and listen to some of the testimony you'll get sick and vomit.

                                  Best wishes

I think posters carry on as if we are immune to rape/violence in the USA and when it happens, we are somehow more civilized. Many of these posters seem to think their is a difference between a civilized rapist and an uncivilized rapist. I think it makes irrational and insecure people feel better about themselves if they think they are better than others!

Americans are so egotistical that it makes us irrational. We seem to think that the crime in another country is much worse than the same crime here. We like to sit on our high horses and pass judgement on an entire group of people because of the actions of one or a few.

Screw the laws of India. These women need handguns. Good market for illegal gun runners.

You are naive if you think guns don't exist in India or if you think guns can prevent rapes. How many guns do we have in the USA and how many rapes are committed every year? Answer that question and tell me if a gun will deter a rapist hell-bent on raping someone.

Problem is that not enough women carry. Blowing the balls off will certainly discourage a potential rapist - forever.

I like the fathers idea. Just hang them and let them swing for a week until the start smelling. Do it out side the city limits if you have too!

I spent three months in India (new Delhi) and from reading the local news there seems to be a problem with men relating to women. I am not suprised that this kind of thinh is being reported inthe news it have been happening for a long time just that the world is hearing about it now.

Please do not tire of reporting on these tragedies. Only pressure from the outside world can change public opinion in a backward culture that wants to be a global player.

Even if it's just about the money, I'll take change on that level if it helps deliver a human being from suffering inhuman atrocities.

As the father of a daughter, I say neuter them first, then hang them.

I am not in favor of any type of cruel or unusual punishment. public execution after a trial is fine with me. if we used public hanging in the US like they did in Judge Parker's time, it may help to deter crime. as it is with putting them on death row for years of appeals, no pain executions by letal injection, no deterent to crime is available. go back in time and do what our ancestors did, and hang them in front of the court house, and open to public viewing. it may deter some poor miscreant from doing the same thing.
