Indian police personnel present six arrested men, accused of a gang rape in Punjab state, Sunday.
Updated at 8:39 p.m. ET: Six suspects have been arrested over the rape of a woman on a bus in northern India, just weeks after the gang-rape and murder of a student sparked nationwide protests, reports said early Sunday.
Police say a 29-year-old woman was a lone passenger on a bus to her village in northern Punjab state on Friday when she was attacked, The Associated Press reported.
The driver and conductor allegedly refused to stop at her village and instead drove her to a desolate location. They took her to a nearby building where they were joined by friends and raped her repeatedly, the AP said.
The woman went to a police station in the morning to file a complaint. Six of the seven suspects have been arrested, Reuters reported.
The issue of rape has taken center stage in India, where a 26-year-old woman said she was raped through the night Friday by six men. NBC's Duncan Golestani reports.
The apparent case follows the gang rape and fatal beating of a medical student on a New Delhi bus in December, which sparked protests in India over national attitudes to violence against women and made headlines around the world.

Despite the heightened awareness of the way sex crimes are dealt with, the Times of India reported that the latest victim was publicly named by police in Punjab – a move the newspaper described as “completely insensitive.”

"Six men have been arrested on allegations of having raped a 29-year-old woman... after forcibly taking her to an unknown location on the night of January 11," local police officer Raj Jeet Singh said, according to Agence France-Press.
Police say they arrested six suspects on Saturday and are searching for one other, AFP said.

I have worked for 8 years at a teaching hospital. The entire GI unit was residents and fellows from India. All of them had the opinion that our culture degrades women and the entertainment industry portrays them as fast, slutty and just looking to be raped. This is how many cultures see our TV programs that puts women down on a much lower level than we really know. There is certainly some truth to this. Consider also, the fashion world today for women. Scantilly clad even in the work place and many dress like they are going to hit the streets right after work. Unfortunately, we in this country send every signal that it is just fine to go on a raping rampage for the young generations of Eastern Cultures. There is something to be said how women in the US entertainment industry are presented. It certainly appears we condone bad behavior when one really looks at cheer leaders at major sporting events. This is OUR culture and other cultures see this very differently.

I am not going to do the big comparison on criminal statistics. Instead I want to focus my post on the comparison of media coverage. Here we have these guys in chains, very appealing to me as a member of society. In our country, we don't see this much. We'll be hearing video from the perps' attorney, the humanity of it all, the back story, crikee...on and on. I think we can learn something from the media coverage in India. I hope that when the time comes that they are tried and judged to be executed, we'll get to see those pictures too. Imagine if we got to see such swift justice in this country and the degradation of the criminals instead of the preservation of their "rights to a fair media trial."
Obviously none of you chat or you would have seen the violence, anger & vileness from men in India. Thousands & thousands of them typed obcenities at woman, told them they would make them bleed, described in detail what vulgar & depraved things they want to do to women or their mothers or sisters. India is NOT an advanced country, socially, the males there have very sick minds concerning sex and women. The authorities are corrupt & male driven, like many foreign countries. Castration is not a solution because rape is a crime of violence, a castrated rapist wil find something else to use. Gund are not the answer, but maybe in this caes, there would be one or two less rapists. India is a @!$%#hole & their ideology of how women are treated should be changed. As outrageous as this attorney's statement are, he is just playing the legal defense card. The real proof of India's position on women and crime will be in the verdict handed down by the court. If the court gives these low life reduced sentences or lets them off, then it speaks volumes for India's ability to take it's place in a civilized world. As Americans, however, we can contact every American company that "out-sources" jobs to Indian companies and threaten boycott. Let's face it, throughout this greed ridden world, money or the loss of it, will often determine justice.

The women of India have no power. They are put in submissive and servile positions by the men. The few women who aspire to be doctors (about the only respected career) are from wealthy and influential families. If they make the unfortunate decision to ride a public bus, then they're considered "fair game" for any man out there.
Someone in an earlier post asked how women could teach their sons to have such attitudes toward women. Actually, the women don't have a say in how their sons are raised, what they are taught, and the attitudes they acquire. The sons are carefully taught and cultivated by the men in their lives.
And you know this, how?
India is a country ruled by over lapping, corrupt, male dominated government. If the women are treated like chattel, then what chance do their children have? The country is a cesspool of over regulated judicial department and have obviously lost their conscience for the crime of rape. Sorry will stay living in the U.S. and do not plan on visiting this country anytime soon. All tourist should stay away. Public transportation is a joke. Not only are animals allowed on buses, but some of them are people too!

Why is gang raping a woman on a bus becoming a popular fad? Why are these six rabid beasts still breathing? Why can the rabid beasts realize that one day it will be their mom, sister, wife being gang raped on a bus? I cry Why!
The men of India (at least MOST of them) have absolutely no regard for women, INCLUDING their mom, sister, wife, etc. They consider women to be convenient servants, totally expendable, and worthless.
If their wife, mother, sister, etc. is raped and lives, she will most likely be killed when she returns home (there is no other place for her to go) because she has brought shame on the family name just by being raped.

As an emtionally and verbally only girl with 2 brothers, and then a battered woman by a practicing psychiatrist husband--when I say that, people only stare at me and never respond--and 2 sons who have assaulted me--I fully support removal of the testicles and the penis. Studies have shown that sex offenders who have been merely castrated find a source of testosterone in pills or injections and are open for business as usual. I challenge society to imagine it with women running the show. Would our history be one of male subjugation and greed and war mongering? And too bad for those who can't get it up. Stop production of Cialis and Viagra. They're probably not good in bed anyway, and their women have tolerated enough and have soothed their egos long enough. I think God better do something and quick as society won't. How about letting a man father 2 children and then both men and women be steriized. I was happy with 2 children, even taking into account that I've been the recipient of their testosterone-fueled abuse. Except for trying to be part of my grandchildren's lives, I've pretty much written them off.
One punishment for these guys is that if she had STDs, they would contract same. Are ten witnesses needed for each of the men? Will she be stoned (with rocks)? Could the men undergo mutilation of the offending genital organ?
After a long workout at the gym I am in the locker room changing and I overhear a few other guys say something about rape. My ears perk up as I hear one say, "oh I did not rape her, she wanted it, she sounded like she wanted it." This in a very small and remote city in rural Alaska. Being a pacifist, a con confrontational, and non violent person, I just listened in shock before heading to the shower. Attitudes toward women, worldwide are not improving. Being non confrontational however would not stop me from preventing a gang of Indian men from harassing and attacking a helpless woman on a bus in India, any more or less than I would not hesitate to do the same here in America.In the locker room, I caught part of a conversation, I knew none of them so I have no idea if they were joking, or the context of the conversation; though even discussing the idea of rape, is no excuse. I have been to India many times and have sat next to or close to women many times on busses and trains knowing the way that typical young groups of Indian men will just swarm around those they deem helpless and easy targets. I would gladly print up t-shirts that say "Women's Defense Action Group" and provide them to men who would wear them and ride public transportation in India in order to defend women, not harass them, rape them, and kill them. If I had the resources to do so, I would gladly give of my time to ride public transportation in India to set the example of chivalrous behavior. Movements for good are started with the good and decent actions of a few. India is a remarkable country with millions of wonderful people, however age old ignorance, caste systems, and cultural devaluation of women, have led to this horror happening again and again. Its only the media attention that brings shock to the eyes of the world, similar events are happening in India and other parts of the world, every day.
Why are their faces covered.? Show their punk faces to the world. It is another example of India's code, protect the male, but to h*ll with the women. If you punks are so "tough" that you can do what you do, then at least show your face.. cowards
When was the last time women gang rape anyone. or kidnap anyone not that its not happening but as mothers the majority of us have a higher level of morality puttng guns in the hands of women and out of the hands of and men who do not have an wife and kids and the world might look different. There needs to be drastic changes in how we handel violent criminals world wide so they cant hide anywhere.

I was planning on traveling to India for vacation. I will boycott that idea until these animals learn how to treat a lady.
