France bombs rebel strongholds in northern Mali

According to military sources and witnesses, more than 100 people, including rebels and government soldiers, were killed during an air assault by French forces. MSNBC's Thomas Roberts reports.

French fighter jets pounded an Islamist rebel stronghold in northern Mali Sunday as Paris poured more troops into the capital Bamako.

France is determined to end Islamist domination of north Mali, which many fear could act as a base for attacks on the West and for links with al-Qaida in Yemen, Somalia and North Africa.

The attack on Gao, the largest city in the desert region controlled by the Islamist alliance, marked a decisive intensification on the third day of French air raids, striking at the heart of the vast territory seized by rebels in April. The rebels have occupied the northern two-thirds of the poor West African country.

Upward of 200 rebels have reportedly died in the firefight. Malian authorities said 11 soldiers were killed during a battle in Konna, and about 60 others were wounded.

A handout photo released by the French Army shows a French military preparing a Mirage 2000D fighter plane at the French military base of N'Djamena, Chad.

France has deployed about 550 soldiers to Mali for “Operation Serval” – named for an African wildcat. France is leaning on African nations to also contribute troops for an operation that the United Nations has stressed should be “African-led, African-owned.”

Ivory Coast President Alassane Ouattara immediately pledged 3,300 African soldiers. Former French colonies Senegal, Niger and Burkina Faso have all pledged to deploy 500 troops within days.

Algeria, which shares a northern border with Mali, has allowed France to make full use of its airspace, said French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius. Fabius said he was grateful for Algeria’s support given that the country’s leadership have pushed for a political solution over a military intervention, worried that al-Qaida militants and refugees would be pushed into southern Algeria.

The United States is considering sending a small number of unarmed surveillance drones to Mali as well as providing logistics support, a U.S. official told Reuters. Britain and Canada have also promised logistical support.

As fighting took place in the north, Bamaka was calm, with the sun streaking through the dust enveloping the city. Some cars drove with French flags draped from the windows to celebrate the French intervention.

Hundreds of Malians lined up to donate blood destined for their troops locked in a fierce battle against Islamist rebels occupying the northern two-thirds of the poor West African country.

The road ahead could be hugely expensive and last months, not weeks, warned Reuben Brigety, one of the U.S. State Department’s leading officials for Africa.

"A massive, massive undertaking," he said when he spoke at London’s Chatham House in late October. "That is incredibly difficult terrain; it's a vast expanse. It will take a long time to take and hold."

I'm somewhat surprised, and pleased, by the fact that Hollande is showing some real spine dealing with the situation in Mali. Way to go Francois.

Good Work France.

The article says they are afraid attacks on the west and links with Al Qaida in Somalia and Yemen.

Strange...... at their closest point those countries are 2,500 miles away.

That's like a guy in San Diego buying Mexican weed from a guy in Cleveland.

****************************What's the matter*****************************

All of you are not praising President Obama's "Rebels" of Ansar Al Shariah as Al Quada Saudi Arabia (AQ), Al Quada Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), Al Quada Syria (AQS), Al Quada Yemen (AQY), Hezbollah, Al Quada Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), the Libyan Islamic Fighting Group (LIFG), etc. that President Obama supported to Overthrow and Murder US Ally President Gaddaffi the Collaborator to the Christians, Jews, Unbelievers.

And during the Presidential Debates Presidential Candidate Romulan warned everyone about Mali, and President Obama had the "deer in the headlights" blank stare (go watch the 2012 Presidential Debates yourself on youtube.com).

It is President Obama's "Rebels" of Ansar Al Islam that is at Mali just like US Ally Libya.

Does not help that President Obama, VP Biden, former President Clinton inflamed the Islamic World to Violence with their 2012 Presidential Campaign "Osama Bin Laden is Dead, GM is Alive" as Osama Bin Laden being the over 1.5 Billion Islamic Believers Worldwide Superstar Holy Warrior of Islam. President Obama's Bragging was worse than murdering the Pope while still at Italy, worse than that Pastor threatening to burn the Holy Koran, cartoons of Mohammad, etc..

The over 1.5 Billion Islamic Believers Worldwide in response to President Obama's "Osama Bin Laden is Dead, GM is Alive" being "Obama, Obama, We Are All Osama" then Violently Rioting at Egypt, Demonstrations at Tunisia, etc..

US Ally Libya was absolutely necessary to be overthrown to start attacking the rest of Africa, especially the Holy Warriors of Islam seizing the weapons, ammunition, etc. from US Ally Libya's Military Depots at Hight Razma, Benghazi.

With Ansar Al Islam planning attacks on the US Consulate to coincide with the date of Osama Bin Ladens Greatest Victory against the Great Satan, 9/11.

MC Gusto - They need more help than just this one country.

The US Military of US AFRICOM has been involved. This is why it was a lame excuse to have not sent the US Military less than 2 hours away by slow propellor C-130 and AC-130s during the over 7 hour attack of the US Consulate at Benghazi. Once again the US Military Commander (US AFRICOM) that disagreed with President Obama tendered his Letter of Resignation and goes on Retirement.

Cute, but the French couldn't bomb, let alone fight, their way out of a fooking paper bag.

But the real test will be if they put French boots on the ground and lead the charge.

You DO realize that the French are ALREADY asking US (that's right, the good ole U.S. of A) for our "assistance" in this matter, no?

This will be the prelude to Vietnam II. French start, go in and invade and colonize countries, realize they can't fight if their a$$es depended on it, walk away and stick US with their conflict.

        #1.22 - Mon Jan 14, 2013 6:16 AM EST

Seven2Seven: 1991 Iraqi war was won without many boots on ground.

In 2003 Iraqi war we put many boots on the ground and we lost it badly.

It will be most foolish to put boots on the ground in the mad seventh Sunni and tenth century Shiites Islamic hell holes.

Just carpet bomb the most militant areas.

When they blow us up, they don't bother much. Then why should we care?

Jonathan, are you high? How many troops were in Iraq ON the ground in 1991? In 2003 I think I saw on the news where the "boots" drove tanks down mainstreet Bagdad untouched. You are 0-2, go home to the safe sandbox with Jimmy........

          #1.24 - Mon Jan 14, 2013 10:45 AM EST

IXLR8: I am for minimum losses of lives of poor soldiers. From that angle, in 1991 there were least losses.

Even in 2003, it should have been carpet bombings including of Baghdad first before putting soldiers on the ground.

NATO forces entered with a bang and Saddam's forces just melted away only to hit back at their own convenience.

It is difficult to handle Islamic extremists’ guerilla warfare and win. Instead clean the most dangerous dpoyd by bombings before putting soldiers on the ground.

So now your saying there were US troops on the ground?? That's progress. Now for carpet bombing a country? That's and Archie Bunker mentality and will not work in todays political arena. You need to reload to another story. 0-4 today.

MC Gusto - I missed the part about us playing a support role.

Just so that you do NOT post anything Uneducated again.

Without the US, NATO would not exist (US Taxpayer Money, US Military Bases, US Military Personnel, US Military Equipment, etc.), that is why routinely the Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR) is a US Military General or Admiral.

Whenever you hear the term "support role" that means that US Military Asymmetric Warfare (aka Special Warfare) Forces are already "Boots on the Ground"; this has been the Norm and not the exception, just like the US Military Pilots attached to the CIA's SAD/SOG that were flying Close Air Support (Air to Ground Attacks) to "support" the French at Dien Bien Phu of French Indochina (Vietnam); as well as providing Air Cargo and Personnel Transportation during the fighting.

The term "Advisers" does NOT mean arming, training, then sitting in the rear watching; just like during the US Military Training Teams to US Ally Iraq during the Iran Iraq Wars, as the "Advisers" were actually training US Ally Iraq Military Units then leading them into Combat; just like being rotated to Operation Cyclone in that we were vetting, training, organizing, arming then leading the 1980s Pro US Afghan Muhajeen against the USSR 40th Army Occupation.

During the current President Obama Secret Wars (outed by Senator Lieberman as Illegal (no US Laws), Unfunded (no US Congressional Appropriations)) US Military Asymmetric Warfare Teams are conducting Special Reconnaissance, Special Surveillance, Targeting and Target Damage Assessments, other none of your business missions, etc. as "Boots on the Ground". The dumbest thing was that in response President Obama Officially Confirmed that we were at these Nations, with the response of the Holy Warriors of Islam offering Rewards for our Deaths, then the locals that did not know before started hunting us for the bounties of more gold than the locals could ever earn in their entire lifetime.

                              Jonathan,

First, most of them are there in combat roles. Check the NATO casualties, 88 French died, 70 in combat. That puts the French in fourth place, after the U.S., UK, and Canada.

Second, back in 1940 no country, repeat, no country in the entire world would have been able to defeat the Germans. You should be reminded, or most probably for the first time told, that back in 1940 there was just one front, the Germans didn't have to spread their forces from Normandy, to North Africa, to Stalingrad.

Anyway, why do you insist on trying to look so ignorant about the subjects ?

But there is no question whatsoever that Gaddaffi was a terrorist and admitted murderer of many Americans - civilians and service members.

He was about as much of any "ally" of America as Pakistan is now, or Afghanistan likely will be in 5 years.

The French have always been liberators of the oppressed. If it were not for their helping the Colonies during the American Revolutionary War, the United States would not exist today. And the French gave us the Statue of Liberty, a colossal symbol of the freedom that they helped America to win. Now the French have risen again to the task of defending freedom and democracy, to liberating the oppressed. It is times like this when I am proud that my ancestors were French, and I feel thankful to France for the liberty that I have here in the United States of America.

It's time to bring back bunker busters and napalm for these 'islamist' murderers (the rebels). The world is tiring of their intolerance of any other religion and their willingness to murder to prove their point.

I think you have a great point Backtobasics:" the world is tiring of their intolerance...".

The French are very diplomatic and tolerant (to a fault many would say) and are a very multicultural nation as is America, I actually can't think of any other country closer to the American multicultural mix than France, well England maybe. Anyhow when they put skin in the game they are fed up and usually tenacious. But it's not just the French who are fed up. The world is fed up with "islamo"-terrorism.

Even Berliner Morgenpost is calling the French intervention "Europe's Freedom is finally being fought for in the Desert'' .(Ansar Dine Chief IYAD AG GHALI is called the Wrecker Nine Lives ). Of note- there is a Swedish kidnappee- kidnapped by these Islamists in November 2011 in Mali -his name is Johan Gustafsson,38 yrs old who was on a motorcycle vacation there. Then in August 2012 AL JAZEERA broadcasted from Ansar Dine Northern Mali environs and Johan Gustafsson was seen in that broadcast. One should read Gulf News and the Opinion regarding Al Jazeera and incitement.

France has done something good for once, although Britain is helping but not via combat methods, it would be nice if other countries could help out as well. I'm still surprised Britain is giving help considering Britain is prepared for war against Argentina if it ever attempts to invade the Falklands. I am even more shocked that the US hasn't lead the charge like it tends to do. The US didn't lead the charge in Libya unlike Britain and France so to see the US not do it again is rather odd as America is pretty much known for being trigger happy lol. Either way, the sooner we rid of islam or islamist or whatever it is we are at war with, the better the world will be :).

And now some of the same carnage is coming home to rest with one of the Countries that manufactures these weapons...

But the level is acceptable too Republicans...

Mikey, we're at war in Afghanistan and Iraq along with boots on the ground in so many other countries. This is one we should use drones and put them up rebel asses.

The war is against terrorists, not Islam. 99% of those who practice the religion are peaceful. I know, I lived in North Africa, and they hate the terrorists, wanting them out and killing them with no regard to anything. However, rooting out evil isn't that easy. There are terrorists from so many countries, including ours.

Ours you say? Yes. For every pedophile, wife or child beater, dog or cock fighter. All practice terrorism in a way of their own. There are a lot of ways to terrorize someone without trying to kill them, or yourself with a bomb strapped to your stupid ass.

Some will call me a 'lib' for saying that there is no reason to own an AK-47, M-16(15-whatever they call it today), high capacity magazines or weaponry that has no reason other than to kill as many as possible as quickly as possible.

And yet, I see no reason not to own weapons for hunting, for self-protection, for target practice. There are many reasons to own various weapons, and I don't care if a person owns a weapon. I just object to weapons that have no reason for being other than to arm our Armed Forces and not for personal pleasure in saying to a neighbor - 'Hey guys, come look at this AK I bought, and I got five 30-round clips to go with it. And see all the bullets (rounds actually)'. Or because you think our President is going to take away all our weapons. He isn't and that's something the NRA fools want people, gullible souls, to believe. No one is going to abrogate your 2nd Ammendment rights. Just remember though, that Ammendment was written in the 1780's, not today.

And I see the Pig has put in her crap comments. Why she or he has to even post I don't know. And she/he should take her friend Alan-static with her. She/he incites with her comments, for absolutely no reason. Or any that I can see.

I can see that you're only off on one point. That being the part about the AR15 being a military weapon. It is not, the military version, M4, is three burst capable meaning it will fire 3 rounds with each trigger pull, as well as fully automatic capable, meaning it will fire until out of ammo as long as the trigger is pulled one time and held. The civilian AR15 is only semi-automatic capable, meaning it will only fire one round with each pull of the trigger. The "Assault" rifles only look like the military version, they are not capable of burst or automatic fire. I have a regular looking 22 rifle that is also semi-automatic as are many rifles and shotguns.

Not complaining, just saying that this is a common misconception by many who are unfamiliar with guns and is understandable.

The 2nd Amendment is just as valid and valuable today as when it was written.

Nothing. the birthrate of french women is dropping and the birthrate of muslim women is rising or at least nearly three times higher. A few generations and the muslims will have a majority, can then vote in the democracy, and then change France to an islamic country.

Will have to wait and see how this turns out. The french will find lots of targets to start with, then they will be fighting with conventional forces against an unconventional force. Then it will be hit and run tactics, suicide bombs, car bombs, and you cant tell the friendlies from the enemy. Eventually, "freedom fighters start coming in from other islamic countries to offer their services. And then you get worn down. Eventually, public opinion, with costs of the war, deaths of soldiers, and no stable government in place end up turning against the western force. The russians left afghanistan, with the same tribal leaders in charge as when they arrived, mostly due to costs. In Viet nam, the only confrontation of conventional warfare was the tet offensive in 1968. The US won with superior forces. However the unconventional warfare waged by the North, eventually caused the US to leave. Same in Iraq, wait and see how long they stay civilized with democracy until they turn into an islamic state. Afghanistan? Will go back to the 10 tribes in charge, with China moving in after we leave to get he lithium. Same in Lybia, Tunisia, and Egypt. The same will probably happen in Mali. Useless government, untrained army, Islamic freedom fighters, er, terrorists will win. The French will find Dien Bien Phu again.

Then what? The half brain leaders that run these countries will just reap the profits of being able to rape the people unabated. The majority of african nations have no peace...period. And before sharpton and his cronies start crying racism against the big bad white boy, let me say. Africa is so rife with tribes who are used to leading themselves, it's hard for them to come together and unite to solve their problems....period.

But as for how I feel about Africa, it's an incredibly beautiful place worth the fight to save it.

And then shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another. And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many. And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold. But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved." Math 24: 6-13
