Pakistan's envoy to US faces potentially deadly blasphemy accusation

Sherry Rehman, Pakistan's ambassador to the U.S., seen in November last year, is facing accusations of blasphemy.

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan - A petition accusing Pakistan's ambassador to the United States of committing blasphemy has been filed with the country's Supreme Court.

Police were directed on Thursday to investigate allegations against Sherry Rehman, who has already faced death threats from militants after calling for reforms to the country's anti-blasphemy law, according to court documents.

If the police find that there is enough evidence to support the allegations, the court will press charges against Rehman.

According to Pakistan's blasphemy laws, anyone found to have uttered words derogatory to the Prophet Muhammad can be put to death.

And those who are accused are sometimes lynched by mobs even if they are found innocent by the courts.

The allegations against Rehman, which revolve around comments she made on Pakistani television in 2010, are being brought by Muhammad Faheem Ahkter Gill, a 31-year-old businessman who owns a marble business in the city of Multan.

Gill was watching the television interview with Rehman with two friends. He said he felt her comments were derogatory to the Prophet Muhammad and, being a Muslim, it was his responsibility to do something about it.

"I had been striving to get a blasphemy case registered against her since 2010, but in vain. Today the supreme court has ordered (the police) to register a case against her," he said.

In November, a Pakistani Christian girl, Rimsha Masih, who was accused of burning pages of Muslim holy texts was cleared of blasphemy.

Rehman, a prominent member of the ruling Pakistan People's Party (PPP), was appointed as Pakistan’s Ambassador to the United States in November 2011.

Before being named envoy, she led the Pakistan Red Crescent Society and was a ranking member of the National Security Committee in the country's Parliament.

She also the founding chairperson of the Jinnah Institute, a non-partisan public policy think tank "committed to the strengthening of democracy, governance and an independent national security project in Pakistan," according to the website of Pakistan's embassy in the United States.

F(*^ Muhammad - how's that for blasphemy for you? These terrorists can't stand to see women in positions in power. Women need to start turning the tables and start throwing acid on their male terrorist rapist husbands/fathers/brothers/uncles, etc. Cut off their genitalia. How any women outside of the middle east can convert to this backwards, terrorist religion is baffling.

That is Pakistan, a pure Islamic nation invented by the British and kept in the map alive the US, British and others.

But for the US and allies, India or Russia would have wiped out the pure Islamic nation, still a "strategic ally"!

If this is the case in a pure Islamic nation, imagine how it will be in an impure Muslim nation!

People in America can look forward to the EXACT SAME PUNISHMENT if the "Christian" mob continues to infiltrate our government and it's laws. The screaming of the teabaggers of not wanting "shaira law" in America is planning the exact same thing, only without islam as their cause. Hipocrits from Paul Ryan on down to Haley Barbor.

Hell you could say the same about fundamental Christians here in the US. The Christian right has been pushing for years to limit personal freedoms, don't you think if left unchecked those idiots would return to the Inquisition?

I've even heard mumblings about Witch trials, and Moral trials. In some communities, there are people killed or "excommunicated" for behaviors they don't approve of, according to their interpretation of the "Word" of the Bible.

Do a little research into offshoots of the Mormon church and Amish, or Mennonite. I read about a little girl in one of those communities who had been stoned not too long ago. A Mormon girl's body was found a few years ago, after she had been reported as a run away, it turned out she had been "punished".

I've read articles about some members/groups of the Christian right in the US that would like to take us back to a world where adulterers and homosexuals would be put to death. Their system of justice would be based on the Old Testament writings. Can you imagine what would happen to a thief or anyone else that didn't adhere to their dictates, a woman spoke out against a man, or you made any statement against the Christian God or Jesus? It would be very similar to Sharia law.

Women, pay attention...this is what a society looks like when men make all the rules!

It's not the man's fault that he can't keep it in his pants...it's the woman's fault for wearing clothes that indicated she was 'asking for it'.

It's not the man's fault that he doesn't agree with what you say; it's your fault for not being quiet.

It's not the man's fault that you got raped outside a bar...it's your fault for being there.

If it happens to you, it's your fault.

In reality, if you take the Haddith fully into account - and I know American Feminists with Degrees who've done just that (in fact, I'm sharing HER opinion) - Mohamed comes across as a "proto-feminst"; though the same auther who came to that conclusion, also pooh-poohed these SO-CALLED MUSLIM MEN who've never once, in all of their 1300+ year history, ever LIVED UP TO WHAT THE PROPHET COMMANDED THEM TO DO REGARDING WOMEN; BUT THEN, KEEPING THEM 'SECOND CLASS CITIZENS' MAKES THEM EASIER TARGETS TO RAPE!!!

I'm so glad that I don't believe in their religion or their god or their prophet. (I don't believe in the Christian one, either.) They keep proving over and over that their religion is nothing but a bogus cult. It amazes me at how stupid people are to continue following a belief system that advocates harming another person. Mohammed, the so-called prophet,--he created an evil cult (probably in his own image. [Think about that.]). A god has enough power of its own accord that it does not need humans to defend it.

The God of the Torah, Bible and Qu'ran are the same God:

‘Those who follow the Messenger, the Prophet, the Immaculate One, whom they find mentioned in the Torah and the Gospel which are with them. He enjoins on them good and forbids them evil, and makes lawful for them the good things and forbids them the bad, and removes from them their burden and the shackles that were among them. So those who shall believe in him, and honor and support him, and help him, and follow the light that has been sent down with him—these shall prosper.’ (Qu’ran 7:158)

Muslims are exhorted to obey the Ten Commandments and the teachings in the Gospels:

God said ‘O Moses, I have chosen thee above the people of thy time by My messages and by My word. So take hold of that which I have given thee and be of the grateful.' And We wrote for him upon the tablets about everything—an admonition and an explanation of all things. So hold them fast and bid thy people follow the best thereof. Soon shall I show you the abode of the transgressors.” (Qu’ran 7: 145-146)

Jesus is acknowledged as the Messiah in both Bible and Qu'ran:

When the angels said, ‘O Mary, Allah gives thee glad tidings of a word from Him; his name shall be the Messiah, Jesus, son of Mary, honored in this world and the next, and of those who are granted nearness to God.‘And he shall speak to the people in the cradle and when of middle age, and he shall be of the righteous.’

She said ‘My Lord, how shall I have a son when no man has touched me?’ He said “Such is the way of Allah, He creates what He pleases. When He decrees a thing, He says to it, ‘Be!’ and it is. And He will teach him the Book and the Wisdom and the Torah and the Gospel; and will make him a Messenger to the children of Israel (to say): ‘I come to you with a Sign from your Lord, which is that I will fashion out for you a creation of clay after the manner of a bird, then I will breathe into it a new spirit and it will become a soaring being by the command of Allah; and I will heal the night-blind and leprous, and I will quicken the dead, by the command of Allah, and I will announce to you what you will eat and what you will store up in your houses. Surely, therein is a Sign for you, if you be believers.

“And I come fulfilling that which is is before me, namely the Torah; and to allow you some of that which was forbidden you; and I come to you with a Sign from your Lord: so fear Allah and obey me.’ (Qu’ran 3:46-51)

And a Papal Bull issued in 1968 called the Nostra Aetate specifies that the Pope understands the God of the Muslims is the same God of the Jews and Christians:

          3. The Church regards with esteem also the Moslems. They adore the one God, living and subsisting in Himself; merciful and all- powerful, the Creator of heaven and earth,(5) who has spoken to men; they take pains to submit wholeheartedly to even His inscrutable decrees, just as Abraham, with whom the faith of Islam takes pleasure in linking itself, submitted to God. Though they do not acknowledge Jesus as God, they revere Him as a prophet. They also honor Mary, His virgin Mother; at times they even call on her with devotion. In addition, they await the day of judgment when God will render their deserts to all those who have been raised up from the dead. Finally, they value the moral life and worship God especially through prayer, almsgiving and fasting.

It amazes me at how stupid people are to continue following a belief system that advocates harming another person.

Actually it doesn't. The fanatics' interpretation of it has skewed the perception, but Muhammad was pretty clear that martyrs were going to hell:

a3.3 The Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) said:

          (1) "The first person judged on Resurrection Day will be a man martyred in battle. He'll be brought forth, Allah will reacquaint him with His blessings upon him and the man will acknowledge them, where-upon Allah will say, 'What have you done with them?' to which the man will respond, 'I fought to the death for you.'

"Allah will reply, `You lie. You fought in order to be called a hero, and it has already been said.' Then he will be sentenced and dragged away on his face to be flung into the fire."

-Reliance of the Traveller (a codified guide to Shari'a law written in the 1300's)

Being a member of none of the Abrahamic religions, I have a little more perspective on all of this, and trust me, from where I stand there's little difference in the doctrine and theology of all three of those belief systems. The only thing that differs is where each of you are in your religion's evolution.

            #2.6 - Thu Jan 17, 2013 3:48 PM EST

I don't quote the ancient fairy tales to reinforce a religious viewpoint. I live in a land that has laws that are written for all, regardless of what they choose (or not) to worship. The old Abrahamic laws did call for a lot of destruction and death. Stoning, stabbing, chopping, you name it. Murder, mutilation and death are plastered all over those ancient texts. To think that any of that old and unnecessary hate and violence is still acceptable in today's world demeans us all.

The reason we have so many different "ideas" today is PEOPLE CANNOT READ AND COMPREHEND WHAT THEY READ. Give the same sentence to two people and have 2 different understandings. We have allowed ourselves to become predisposed to our own representation of facts, NOT NECESSARILY WHAT WAS INTENDED TO START OFF WITH. Take the present gun fiasco, NO ONE is coming for your guns, we just want common sense to prevail, what is wrong with that? Common sense used to be an admirable thing, it meant that a person could take in information and CORRECTLY understand it's meaning. Today because telling a lie is accepted as "the normal thing to do in business AND GOVERNMENT( 8 years of it under Bush Jr) NO ONE BELIEVES WHAT IS SAID AND THEY HAVE TO "THINK" OF WHAT IS ACTUALLY GOING ON". When LIER'S are exposed AND IMPRISONED for crime's against humanity then we will see a return to "common sense" and civility, along with honesty and truthful dealing. Not until then will we lift this burden of "educated" people thinking there is no climate change, and we need to kill wolves in our park systems. I am fortunate, I have but a few more years to endure this madness before I can rest my weary bones, but many of you have a miserable life ahead of you. Lying politicians, lying corporations, lying police officials, lying priest, lying family members all while the weather go's crazy with super hurricanes and drought like never before seen by man, along with the scarcity of clean drinking water and food supplies. ALL THE WHILE WONDERING WHEN SOME CRIMINAL WITH A GUN WILL COME FOR WHAT LITTLE YOU HAVE LEFT, such a wonderful scenario, maybe when you are on your knees PRAYING to your savior he will come and "save" you from your horrors. INSTEAD SOME CRIMINALLY INSANE FREAK ( NO MENTAL HEALTH AVAILABLE, REMEMBER THOSE THINGS YOU ALLOWED TO BE CUT FROM HEALTH CARE) WILL END YOUR MISERY WITH A QUICK BULLET. Remember the good old days when there WAS common sense!!!!!!! If only you had some NOW!

the best way to control the masses is to offer up a common enemy.

Helps focus the lower castes on something other then their missery.

Hate is an easy fire to start and once anger at their lot in life is displaced by hate for a common enemy it is easy to stoke.

We either need to blow them away and start over, or leave 'em alone, but still the majority of those rats are smegma. The idea that any civilized country wood lend creedence to such a cesspool is indigative of just how far we have regressed.

A few years ago, I worked on a project in the middle east and had several Pakistani electricians that worked for me. They were the nicest, most polite people on the site. Making overtly general statements about an entire country based on the idiocy of a portion of that country isn't particularly constructive.

After reading some of the trite, "enlightening" posts in your comment history I find myself even more firmly entrenched in that belief. (i.e.: I'd be pretty saddened to be lumped into the same group by people from another country and judged with that group based on your comments.)

Battsman, I have worked in the Middle East as well. As with people everywhere, the public face of the people is not always revealing. I am pretty sure that if you were to meet or work with the marble salesman, he would come come across as a polite and friendly fellow, one on one. But do something to incur the wrath of his religion, and you would see a totally different side. Generalizations are often based on a wealth of examples, even though they aren't accurate down to the individual level. Of course, individual examples are no more accurate than generalizations. But sociology and anthropology would be nowhere if it weren't for generalizations.

Why USA is pumping BILLIONS of dollars every year to this country of nasty stinking vermin? Because we the voters keep on electing politicians who think that every country in the world should follow their dictum. Look Pakistan (ruled by likes of Yaya Khan and Musharraf military dictators) fought against a democratic India and yet USA gave Billions in military aid to vermin of Pakistan (so that they will fight against Russian soldiers in Afghanistan) rulers. What actually happened is that Taliban and Al-U were created to spread teachings of child molester Mohammad and terrorize the world. Do you get it? Still today as we discuss these issues, US is giving Billions to Pakistan. Go figure that one out.

I would have to disagree with you. While your 12th century comment was accurate, Muhammed led a (for lack of a better term) gang of brigands who raped, murdered, and enslaved a swath across the Middle East. He wanted men who were ignorant, violent, and interested in oppressing any women (and anybody else) they could get under their power. These are exactly the sort of followers he would have wanted.

Another example of Pakistan being a massively failed state. And Islam falling backwards into decay and decline. A religion that could create great minds like Ibn Arabi is now cannibalizing itself, and rendering itself incapable of any form of civilizational development. Its greatest failure is its inability to evolve its people past the original tribalism of its preIslamic past. Ironically, fundamentalist Christianity here will do the same thing if allowed the same degree of power.

All three of the corrupt Abrahamic religions were originally designed and covertly installed by outside offensive totalitarian ETs, who repeatedly masqueraded as Divinity toward mankind in the process of covertly installing them in a serial way into our emerging human world. They are all Human Software Viruses (HSVs) and biocybernetic warfare components of a larger ET designed PWMD, or Program Weapon of Mass Destruction, whose purpose is to one day (soon) crash and explode our emerging human world in a final programmed cataclysm of global warfare fueled with WMDs, known as the Christian Apocalypse or World War III. These outside offensive totalitarian ETs are trying to create a pretext for future eminent domain military intervention into our world on the heels of the WWIII, while once more masquerading as Divinity toward mankind, this time as the returning Christ, Messiah, or Mahdi, whichever the case may be. These ETs are trying to position themselves to one day steal and annex our extremely valuable real estate completely away, after supposedly trying for a thousand intervening years following their military intervention to salvage or redeem mankind from their "hopelessly violent ways". These ETs were forced to take this covert approach at territorial conquest which relies upon their eminent domain rights of military intervention in our sector of the Milky Way galaxy, because there are Free Galaxy powers which reside elsewhere in our Milky Way galaxy who currently stand in the way of overt military conquest on a stellar level. The real "Gospel" or "Good News" is that mankind potentially has countless millions (even billions) of years of growth, development and expansion ahead of them, so long as they don't fall for the ET designed and installed terminal religious "End Time" belief systems known as the Abrahamic religions. Muhammed never engaged in homosexuality. The Qu'ran is quite clear on its denunciation of that point--just as clear as the Bible is. Homosexuality is evil and those who practice it must be stoned.

Now yes, Muhammad had a bride/wife who would be considered a child today...but then so did Joseph. Joseph and Mary were Jews, and Jewish law at the time was based on God's words 'be fruitful and multiply'. Since life was short and infant mortality was high, a female started childbearing as soon as she was physically capable of it.

Accordingly, by Jewish law, a girl could be betrothed, or engaged, soon after birth, with the marriage being consummated when the girl had her first 'emission from the privates' (period), or she turned 15, whatever came first. As the New Testament accounts tell us may was betrothed to Joseph but not yet married when God told her she would have the Messiah, that would have made Mary somewhere between about 9 and 14 when she married Joseph and had Jesus.

                                  Excuse me?

Why would you assume that someone who doesn't think the way you do automatically means they are Muslim'?

For your information, I'm Wiccan. Grew up a devout Catholic, renounced Christianity because of some blatantly unChristian attitudes, then looked around and found what works for me. if being Christian works for you, have at it. If being Muslim works for you, feel free. According to my belief system, 'There is no one true way'. I'm just trying to correct misconceptions that certain people have about a few centuries-old books.

Now, as to the points in my prior post...If anyone had ever actually read the Qu'ran, they'd know that Muhammad condemned homosexuals.

If the extremists had ever actually sat down and learned how to read what the Qu'ran actually says, they'd realize a lot of the lies and half-truths they've been told by their extremist religious leaders is wrong. There's no 72 virgins waiting for the martyr; the martyr is going to hell (see above quotes at 2.6.

Lets face it, posters to the newsvine are not the braintrust of the country. We come here to waste time and anonymously spout our opinions cowering behind our computers. Here is the place we argue who's right, not what's right, and we are the fringe by and large. It is, by and large, a reservoir of hatred, anger, and ignorance as is displayed in nearly every vine...
