US Navy ship stuck on reef nearly a day after running aground off Philippines

The USS Guardian arrives at White Beach Naval Facility in Japan earlier this month.

A U.S. Navy ship with a wood-and-fiberglass hull that ran aground on a reef off the Philippines was still stuck nearly 22 hours later, Navy officials said Thursday.

The USS Guardian, an Avenger-class minesweeper, hit the Tubbataha Reef in the Sula Sea at 2:25 a.m. local time Thursday (1:25 p.m. Wednesday ET), the Navy said in a statement.

The statement said no one was hurt as a result of the collision, about 80 miles east-southeast of Palawan Island.

“The crew is currently working to determine the best method of safely extracting the ship,” the statement said. “The cause of the grounding is under investigation.”

Guardian, which is deployed to Sasebo, Japan, was commissioned Dec. 16, 1989, and has a crew of about 80, it added.

A U.S. Navy spokeswoman said at about 11:20 a.m. that the ship was still stuck on the reef.

According to a U.S. Navy factfile, the Guardian has a “fiberglass sheathed, wooden hull.”

“These ships use sonar and video systems, cable cutters and a mine detonating device that can be released and detonated by remote control. They are also capable of conventional sweeping measures,” the factfile says.

Denver bill 2, in post #2.5 you stated:

"The density of iron is greater than the density of the anchor .... that's why it sinks."

Shouldn't that say, "The density of iron is greater than the density of the water.... that's why it sinks"??????

Are you sure the Captain is Male. I knopw a lot of you dont want to admit this but women are now in command of war ships. I will admit as a female I am hoping the captain is male, but lets not assume here.

Just googled the ship history - and since it already has the ship aground, the last to take over as CO was male.

        #33.2 - Thu Jan 17, 2013 2:19 PM EST

It was modified for M/F crew - the OOD could have been female. Maybe she didn't want to wake up the Captain to ask advice.

But they keep saying that the sea are rising faster. That would result in the reef being deeper than it used to be. The ship should have been able to float right over it.

NO, the reef used to be up right where everybody could see it!

                Katherine Harvey: Your boat sank?
Captain Ron: No, no, no, no. Not my boat. My boss's boat. Yeah, we hit this reef. Huge son-of-a-bitch. Ran the whole coast.
Katherine Harvey: Wait. The Great Barrier Reef?
Captain Ron: You've heard of it, huh? Smart lady.

If they lighten the ship, either by pumping their fresh water tanks empty or pehaps throwing the duty officer overboard, the boat will float UPWARDS.

I am very curious as to how many of you passing judgement have ever even been aboard a ship let alone manned it. It is so easy to sit on your computer passing judgement on others. As a person who works on a ship in Alaska, I know that there could have been any number of reasons that would cause a ship to run aground. You have no idea until the investigation has been completed.

Ocean pirates can get it unlodged, they will take the ship and the reef.

Look, the sonar tech was using windex to clean his screen and the dang reef snuck up on him. OK OK or perhaps the captain bet the crew he could stop the ship on a dime....er a reef. The captain won the bet and the taxpayers foot the bill. Nawwww that's no good, try this...there was a sailor standing on the bow looking over the water smoking a cig when the captain spied him from the bridge. The captain called out on the horn," YO seamen first class Jones what are you doing ?' Just then the seamen spots the reef coming up fast. CAPTAIN he shouts, it's a REEF it's a REEF. The captain turns to the sargent at arms, What did he say sargent. The sargent turns to the captain, "He said he's got some reef !" WHAT ! the captain replies...REEFER ??? I think so captain the marine exclaims. CLAMP that man irons sargent and throw him in the brig....CRUNCH !!!!
