1 American killed, 2 escape in Algeria hostage crisis, US officials say; militants seek to trade 2 others for blind sheik

Intelligence officials tell NBC News four of the five Americans working at the natural gas complex survived: two escaped and two more are being held. The kidnappers are saying they will exchange the US hostages for two high-profile terror suspects currently in US custody. NBC's Stephanie Gosk reports.

One American was killed and two escaped unharmed from a natural gas complex in Algeria that was stormed by armed militants, U.S. officials said Friday. The fate of two others was unclear.

The officials said there was a total of five Americans at the In Amenas plant in eastern Algeria when the attackers seized dozens of hostages on Wednesday. The officials say two of the Americans managed to conceal themselves when the attack began and later escaped unharmed.

One U.S. citizen was found dead Friday by Algerian forces that had launched a raid on Thursday in an attempt to free the hostages, the officials said.

The deceased American was identified as Frederick Buttaccio, a U.S. official confirmed. Buttaccio's remains have been recovered from the plant and his family has been notified, the official said.

The official did not know the circumstances of Buttaccio's death.

Al-Qaida-linked militants claimed Friday that they were holding two American hostages and would exchange them for two people being held in the United States — the blind sheik Omar Abdel Rahman, convicted in the 1993 bombing of the World Trade Center and Aafie Siddiqque a 40-year-old Pakistani neuroscientist and mother of three, who was convicted of attacking U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan.

That would appear to account for all five Americans thought to have been at the plant, one U.S. official said, if the militants are telling the truth.

On Friday, the Algerian military had launched a second raid on the multinational cabal of kidnappers — led by a one-eyed al-Qaida associate — who laid siege to the In Amenas gas plant on Wednesday, state TV reported.

The situation was fluid, but the U.S. said one thing was carved in stone: It would not be cutting any deals with the captors.

"The United States does not negotiate with terrorists," State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said of reports the militants were seeking the release of Sheik Omar Abdel Rahman, who is serving a life term for the 1993 bombing of the World Trade Center, and Aafia Siddiqui, a Pakistani scientist convicted of trying to kill U.S. soldiers after being arrested in Afghanistan in 2008.

Nuland confirmed there were Americans still being held alive but did not say how many.

The official Algerian news service APS said a total of 132 foreign nationals were taken hostage, and 100 had been freed by midday Friday. It said more than 500 Algerians had also been rescued.

Citing a security source, APS said 12 hostages, including some Westerners, were killed when Algeria staged its first rescue raid on Thursday without consulting other countries in advance. Eighteen militants were killed, it reported.

McFaul family via Reuters

Belfast native Stephen McFaul (right) is pictured with his sons Dylan (left) and Jake in this family handout photo taken four years ago and made available Thursday.

NBC News could not confirm the figures. The French government confirmed one of its citizens had died, and its defense minister said in an interview on France 3 TV Saturday morning that he believed no more French nationals were being held at the plant.

One worker told Reuters that the hostage-takers were out for blood.

"The terrorists told us at the very start that they would not hurt Muslims but were only interested in the Christians and infidels," said the man, who gave his name as Abdelkader. "'We will kill them,' they said."

The brother of escapee Stephen McFaul said the hostages had their mouths taped and their necks draped with explosives. They were being trucked around the compound when the Algerian military hit the compound with explosives, he told Reuters.

"The truck my brother was in crashed and at that stage Stephen was able to make a break for his freedom," Brian McFaul said after speaking with his brother’s wife. "He presumed everyone else in the other trucks was killed."

A French catering employee who worked at the plant said he spent 40 hours hiding under a bed after the militants stormed in Wednesday with a spray of gunfire, only emerging when the soldiers arrived.

"I could see myself ending up in a wooden box," Alexandre Berceaux told Europe 1 radio.

One rescued hostage told Algerian TV that the ordeal was an "exciting episode" and he was "impressed" with the army.

"I feel sorry for anybody who has been hurt, but other than that, I quite enjoyed it," the man said.

Algerian TV via Reuters TV

A British escapee, interviewed by Algerian TV, says the Algerian army did a "fantastic job" with Thursday's rescue.

Another said he was "very, very relieved to be out."

"Obviously, we still don't really know what is happening back on the site, so as much as we are glad to be out, our thoughts are with colleagues who are still there at the moment," he said on Algerian TV.

The militants' attack on the plant, operated in part by BP, was reportedly masterminded by Mokhtar bel Mokhtar, an Algerian with ties to al-Qaida who specializes in lucrative kidnappings and smuggling, according to U.S. officials. He earned the nickname Mr. Marlboro for trafficking cigarettes.

The raiding jihadists were described as a motley crew by an escaped radio operator who told Reuters: "Some were clean, others were dirty, some with beards, others without, and among them a French national with sunglasses."

The Mauritanian news agency ANI reported the group was retaliating over French military action against Islamic incursions in neighboring Mali. But the French operation began just a week ago and the assault on the plant appeared to be long-planned.

On Friday, another possible motive emerged, as ANI said the militants put forth the offer of the prisoner swap.

The offer was not verified by NBC News, but an ANI editor told The Associated Press the kidnappers’ spokesman began calling Thursday with "sounds of war in the background" and "threatened to kill all the hostages if the Algerian forces tried to liberate them."

British Prime Minister David Cameron told the House of Commons in London that Algeria maintains it green-lighted Thursday’s rescue raid because hostages’ lives were in danger when it appeared the militants were trying to spirit them out of the compound.

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said she spoke with the prime minister of Algeria on Friday and requested that the "utmost care" be taken to protect the hostages.

"This is an extremely dangerous situation," she said. "No one knows better than Algeria how ruthless these groups are."

Kari Huus, Catherine Chomiak and Courtney Kube of NBC News and The Associated Press and Reuters contributed to this report.

An Obama administration official, speaking on background, said the U.S. was not aware of the Algerian raid in advance.

What? Susan Rice isn't going to come out with some video story?

Reports today say this situation was planned months in advance, just like Benghazi, so pObama better get his story straight this time!

It sounds like the Algerian military deliberately attacked vehicles carrying hostages. If this is true, then their actions are inexcusable. Of course the ultimate responsibility for any deaths falls on the terrorists, but it sounds like the Algerian military leaders in charge of the situation on the ground are completely inept and showed absolutely no regard for the safety of the hostages. The Algerian government has always taken a strong stance against any negotiation with terrorists and it appears that they care more about killing the terrorists than they do with getting hostages out alive. I realize that the information we have is not complete, but if the account this article is giving from Brian McFaul is correct then the Algerian military leaders have demonstrated extremely poor judgement in dealing with the situation. Deliberately firing on vehicles known to be carrying hostages is inexcusable.

Another article states that the Obama administration was left in the dark. Same thing with Benghazi.

The American people don't really know how much Obama is failing and yet he gets praise. They build up Hillary Clinton the same way. I solely blame the media for not being truthful to the American people. We are fed so much propaganda.

I will wait for some confirmed information before passing judgement on Algerian military.

Wherever there is war, innocent people die a lot. How many Iraqi civilians were killed by US military during the 'Shock and Awe' campaigns? Thousands, if not tens of thousands. And we also had a perfectly good excuse for starting that war.

Hummmmmmmmmm ... The Real surprise .... Why didn't they just blow up the plant?

Regardless of what country you come from ... go to unstable dangerous places to make a big buck ... Expect to be in harms way and possibly die for your choice...

It's all about the power of the US protecting corporate interest ( please note BP as a owner) around the world, not the interest of the American people!

Blowing up the plant and making it useless would have been a far more effective tactic then the one they chose ....

MIKE and people like you excuse Obama from every single failure under some inane idea that we have to hold the Black President to a lesser standard than the white ones. Every single expert on Africa traces both the problems in Mali and this problem to the flood of weapons going to terrorists when we took down Qaddafi without any contingency plans in place. That was Obama's call. His stupid idea to placate our implacable enemies and he not only caused the murder of our ambassador, but he war in Mali and this. @ Gen. Sherman, Obama has failed at Benghazi.

@Mike, why is it that whenever someone criticizes Obama the person who defends Obama brings out the race card? This is what you did. This is the reason why the media still covers up for Obama because they are afraid. This is so wrong. Race has nothing to do with this. Obama represents the US Government. The US Government is in the dark. This is fact.

Algeria has been a boiling pot for years and its getting worse. The US Government should be on top of things that are happening in Algeria and any other terrorists camps. You are right, it's all about the hostages and its up to governments who these hostages represent to protect them or to at least know what it going on in that country.

The US Government is in the dark and no way should they ever be in the dark. That's why everything has been so easy for the terrorists. First Benghazi and now this. What's next?

Mali is another spot we need to be watching and not be in the dark.

Thank God the Algerian government are competent.

How many civilians were killed so the US could get Saddam? The most conservative estimate (just war deaths) is over 60K the actual death toll resulting indirectly from the war ranges over half a mil. Now who's inept?

Hello folks, here we go again. How many countries do we have to bomb and how many millions of people do we have to kill and displace before enough is enough? In our short history we have bombed well over 65 countries and in our short history we have been at war for 217 of our 236 year history. Here is another case of having to fight Jihadists that we armed in Libya. The US plans to send “Army teams” (troops) to 35 African countries.

RT: US will provide France airlift help, ‘training’ for Mali

operation – reports

Washington has agreed to provide France with airlifts to help move troops and equipment in the country’s operation in Mali, an official told Reuters. Meanwhile, a group of US military trainers are expected to arrive in the region by the weekend.

The decision to boost Washington’s contribution to the French-led military operation against Islamist rebels in Mali comes after a formal review of the French request by the Obama administration.

The US Military’s plans include starting US Air Force cargo flights on Friday. C-17 and larger C-5 aircraft will likely be used in the operation. The US could also provide aerial refueling for French aircraft, and deploy surveillance drones.

Chair of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff General Martin Dempsey pointed out that France had not asked for US help in any lethal operations.

In addition to reports that Washington will help French and Malian forces by way of airlift support for getting troops and equipment to the battlefield, CBS News correspondent Margaret Brennan reported that Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said that US military trainers “will be on the ground by this weekend.”

The French intervention in Mali “is going to be a long, drawn out war,” UK-based political analyst Dan Glazebrook told RT.

“This is a ground invasion of Africa, and they’re hoping – France, Britain and the US – are hoping to establish a permanent military presence; an occupation of Africa. And this is one way they’re going to be able to do it,” he explained.

Glazebrook said the hostage crisis at an Algerian gas plant which was sparked by France’s intervention in Mali is an intended consequence of France’s ground invasion.

“Spillover is part of the program…the aim of the strategy of intervention in Mali. What happened since the execution of Gaddafi and the destruction of Libya is that the West armed, funded and equipped these death squads effectively in Libya. The flow of weapons and fighters spread then across the region, which was again, playing into the program of the West to destabilize the region, and they ended up in Northern Mali,” Glazebrook argues.

The War On Terror Spreads to Africa: U.S. Sending Troops to 35 African Nations

America Sets Its Sights On Controlling African Resources … And Reducing Chinese Influence

The U.S. is sending troops to 35 African nations under the guise of fighting Al Qaeda and related terrorists.

Democracy Now notes:

U.S. Army teams will be deploying to as many as 35 African countries early next year for training programs and other operations as part of an increased Pentagon role in Africa. The move would see small teams of U.S. troops dispatched to countries with groups allegedly linked to al-Qaeda, such as Libya, Sudan, Algeria and Niger. The teams are from a U.S. brigade that has the capability to use drones for military operations in Africa if granted permission. The deployment could also potentially lay the groundwork for future U.S. military intervention in Africa.

joethelib - This from a "commander" on the ground in a recent interview (I believe for the show 60 Minutes)... He was in disguise and believed to use the fake name "Fury":

Fury said he had 50 men in Delta force up against bin Laden's 1,000 - support from the Afghan forces was needed.

But, he claimed, many of the Afghan soldiers were not on board - seeing Osama bin Laden as a hero.

"It was almost like it was an agreement, an understanding between the two forces (al Qaeda and the Afghans) fighting each other," he said. "Almost put on a good show and then leave."

One night - alone without his Afghan allies - Fury said he was told bin Laden was a mere two kilometres away.

He had to make a decision - and, faced with overwhelming odds, he elected to stay away.

But the decision always nagged him. He wrote in his book: 'My decision to abort that effort to kill or capture bin Laden when we might have been with 2,000 metres of him, about 2,000 yards, still bothers me.

"It leaves me with a feeling of somehow letting down our nation at a critical time.'

But, he added, it wasn't worth the risk.

Fury had a second chance: Later, a Delta force named Jackal radioed they had bin Laden in sight.

He wrote: "The operation Jackal team observed 50 men moving into a cave that they hadn't seen before.

"The Mujahideen said they saw an individual, a taller fellow, wearing a camouflage jacket. Everybody put two and two together, 'Okay, that's got to be Osama Bin Laden egressing from the battlefield.'

"They called up every available bomb in the air, took control of the airspace. And they dropped several hours of bombs on the cave he went into. We believe, it was our opinion at the time, that he died inside that cave."

Later, however, he was proven wrong, when American forces were unable to find bin Laden's body and the al Qaeda leader began releasing radio and video footage again.

Fury told 60 Minutes believes he knows what happened.

He said bin Laden was wounded in the shoulder by shrapnel from an American bomb, and was then hidden a town next to the al Qaeda cemetery.

"We believe a gentleman brought him in - a gentleman, him and his family were supporting al Qaeda during the battle. They were providing food, ammo, water. We think he went to that house, received medical attention for a few days then, and then we believe they put him in a vehicle moved him back across the pass," he was quoted as saying.

"It’s my understanding they believe he got into a vehicle. He moved as far as he could and then got out and walked across or was carried across into Pakistan. Free and clear," Fury says.

"A question for the Obama haters. Could your little boy Georgie W and his nanny Dickie do any better?"

Could you hold you're boy Obama to the same standards you held GWB or "nanny" to for 8 years? Why does your opinion change just because the current president represents your hypocritical self serving flavor of bias?

"doesn't matter wtf is happening in the world, if the US is involved in any way, shape or form you play the Blame game against our president! Wtf is wrong with you people? Have you gotten so much hate in your heart that you can't possibly use your brain any longer to really comprehend what is going on?":

OHHHH you mean like the libs and progressives who blamed anything and everything on bush, and still do, but they were "right" back then, right? Only we are crazy, not you, for holding Obama to the same standards. WE do comprehend what is happening just fine. Obama is a phucking socialist hypocrite and all of his well hearded sheep are thrilled to death about it.

"the TALIBAN werent terrorist they were and are a legit political party who jst gave a terrorist a safe haven...kinda like the rebubilican party in this country"

Yes clearly it is the republicans saying that christians aren't allowed to have a shred of open opinion in the public but they aren't the least bit worried about the muslim influx and shariah law happenings of dearborne MI. How could we be so blind. Obviously it is the GOP base letting the mexicans cross our border and illegaly use our resources, and the GOP base who sued a state for trying to enforce laws that the feds pretend don't exist.

Terrorism takes many forms. You would know that if you hadn't dumbed yourself down to the level of being a libtard. That in itself is terrorism against one's own best interest.

@ Gen. Sherman, according to Diane Feinstein, Hillary Clinton and many others, yes, a lot more could have been done even from across the pond. For months no one did anything and four Americans were sitting ducks and experienced awful deaths. I'm sorry that you are so blind that you cannot accept the facts.

@ Chuckster, the President of the US will always get blamed for everything, even Obama will agree because he said it during his 2008 campaign. According to him the buck stops at the White House. Of course he said this when he was blaming Bush for everything.

Things are different now that he is the one in office. He blames everyone else.

Tora Bora has us missing OBL by only a few hours.

Actually, Concernedone, we had the opportunity to get Bin Laden in Tora Bora before he could escape from but blew it. The CIA field agent in Afghanistan, Gary Berntsen, had Bin Laden's location pinpointed and asked for additional troops from the 10th Mountain Division to block all the available escape routes, but Bush said no and ordered the army to attack without reinforcements, thus allowing Bin Laden an opportunity to escape and prolong the war.

Gen.Sherman crushes the south. Caligula was not a king, Rome didn't have kings, they had emperors you idiot. Also, Caligula was one of the worst Roman Emperors ever, He was brutal, arrogant, selfish and never willing to compromise. There are few surviving sources on Caligula's reign, although he is described as a noble and moderate ruler during the first two years of his rule. After this, the sources focus upon his cruelty, extravagance, and sexual perversity, presenting him as an insane tyrant! And, by the way, he was the FIRST Roman Emperor to be assasinated! Except for the sexual perversian part, (as far as I know), and being assasinated, he sounds a whole lot like OBAMA to me. Did I say you were an idiot before? Well, it does fit well, somebody who stated that Caligula was their favorite "king" leads directly to being an OBAMA backer.

As far as the Entire Situation:

        A. It was President Obama's Failed Foreign Policies, as seen by the Ayatollahs of Iran as the US negotiating from a position of US Defeat,

        B. that caused the Ayatollahs of Iran to Increase their Overt and Covert Activities Worldwide against the US (Great Satan) and US Allies Worldwide.

        C. The Fundamentalist Islamic Shia Republic of Iran had to get the US and US Allies Kicked out of the Islamic Shia Nation of Iraq to: 1. Stop being stuck between the US and US Allies Military Forces (Iraq and Afghanistan)., 2. No possible US and US Allies Military Forces interventions of Iran's Special Forces, Quds, training arming funding millions of Holy Warriors of Islam at the Fundamentalist Islamic Autonomous Kurdistanis Region of Northern Iraq.

And since it has been the Longterm Strategic Goal of the Allies of the Fundamentalist Islamic Shia Republic of Iran, the Chinese and Russian Federation to get the US and US Allies out of their Backyards (Resources), the Chinese and Russian Federation get the Iraqis Oil that could have paid for the US And US Allies Military Liberation of Iraq with Decades to Centuries of Iraqis Oil. This Strategic Loss of World Resources made the Libyan Oil of Strategic Importance to the US European Allies; however President Obama was already outsmarted as thousands of Holy Warriors of Islam had already helped the Fundamentalist Islamic Muslim Brotherhood take over US Ally Egypt and were attacking US Ally Libya to get the Libyan Military Munitions Depots at Benghazi to attack other African Nations.

        D. At the same time everything else is going on the Fundamentalist Islamic Shia Republic of Iran is placing pressure (will use Iranian Military) on the Pakistanis Government, Afghans, etc. to get the US and US Allies OUT. As during the British Empire Era (British Colonies) the British Knew that the Pakistanis Sea Ports, Bases for Logistics, Khyber Pass, etc. at Pakistan were ESSENTIAL and Mandatory for any "British Adventures" at LANDLOCKED Afghanistan. So without these US Military Logistics Bases at Pakistan, the United Nations Mission Afghanistan can only support 30,000 including International Aid Workers; the Unsupported UN, US and NATO Military Forces must abandon US Ally Afghanistan again to be Massacred by the Fundamentalist Islamic Taliban once again; just like after the US abandoned the 1980s US Ally Pro US Afghan Muhajeen to be massacred by the 1990s Fundamentalist Islamic Taliban fully backed by the USSR Backed Fundamentalist Islamic Shia Republic of Iran, then without any opposition they massacred any suspected Collaborators to the Christians, Jews, Unbelievers in accordance with Fundamentalist Islamic Laws. The 1990s Fundamentalist Islamic Taliban then destroyed 20th Century US Ally Afghanistan, destroying anything, "Western", "Modern", "Non Islamic".

So Unsupported without the US Military Logistics Support Bases at Pakistan the UN, US, and NATO Military Forces must leave United Nations Mission Afghanistan by 2014.

        E. The Fundamentalist Islamic Shia Republic of Iran, pressured the Afghans to give the Ally of Iran, the Chinese, the Mineral Wealth of Afghanistan. China Metallurgical Group. Immediately afterwards the Chinese place Restrictions on the Shipments of Mineral Resources to the US and US Allies, this makes it so that anything manufactured requiring these Minerals must be Made In China, as the opportunity for the Chinese to adopt (steal) any or all US And US Allies Technology and Innovations and to improve the Chinese Economy.

        F. International Intelligence Agencies and US Ally President Gaddaffi report, "Increased Al Quada Activities". US Ally President Gaddaffi reports this thru the US Department of State channels previously established by SOS Condoleezza Rice. President Obama ignores the warnings, just like President Obama ignored the US Ally President Mubarak's warning of "Increased Al Quada Like Activities", ignored the US Ally President Saleh's warning of "Increased Al Quada Activities", etc. (more US Allies Established Government that were later Overthrown). US Ally President Gaddaffi has his Libyan Military start attacking the Holy Warriors of Islam that are at Libya to Kill US Ally President Gaddaffi the Collaborator to the Christians, Jews, Unbelievers, seize the Libyan Military Munitions (weapons, ammunition) Depots at Benghazi to support their future attacks throughout Africa and the "Middle East", release the President Obama Guantanamo Prisoners transfered to US Ally President Gaddaffi's Prisions, and seize 20,000 portable shoulder launched SA-7 Anti Aircraft Missiles to shoot down US Airlines to "Cripple the US Economy". President Obama starts the name calling of the US Allies as "Dictators", "Dictators Killing Their Own People" etc. then withdraws all US Support, US Assistance, and US Funding from these US Allies.

        G. President Obama as Commander In Chief Illegally Orders* the US Military to attack US Ally Libya to support the "Libyan Rebels" of Al Quada Saudi Arabia (AQ), Al Quada Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), Al Quada Syria (AQS), Al Quada Yemen (AQY), Hezbollah, Al Quada Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), the Libyan Islamic Fighting Group (LIFG), etc. that went to Libya to Murder US Ally President Gaddaffi the Collaborator to the Christians, Jews, Unbelievers; they become Ansar Al Shariah to protect and instate Fundamentalist Islam at Libya.

*Illegally as in against US Law, that Restricts and Limits the President's War Powers, 1973 War Powers Resolution (Act). And no US Law (therefore Illegal) with US Congressional Appropriations (therefore Unfunded) like President Clinton and President Bush had to cover their arses.

The USN launches Ship and Submarine launched Cruise Missiles as the First Attacks against US Ally Libya with terminal guidanceby US Military Asymmetric Warfare "Boots on the Ground" attached to the CIA's SAD/SOG. The US Allies and NATO are hesitant to get involved, with US Ally Germany refusing to participate Militarily. The USN Aircraft Carrier Strike Group launches airstrikes, as some of the US Allies ships are just getting to range of US Ally Libya. US Ally President Gaddaffi attempts to escape and the US Military Asymmetric Warfare Forces attached to the CIA's SAD/SOG terminally guide a MQ (Armed Drone) to attack US Ally President Gaddaffi's SUV Convoy. US Ally President Gaddaffi hides in a drainage conduit and is found, beaten and murdered.

Ansar Al Shariah seized the Libyan Military Depots (decades of weapons and ammunition including SA-7 anti aircraft missiles) to attack other African Union (UA) Nations.

The Libyan Islamic Fighting Group were killing US Military at Iraq, they became the Libyan Government as supported and recognized by President Obama.

        H. President Obama and Vice President Biden Inflamed the over 1.5 Billion Islamic Believers Worldwide with their, "Osama Bin Laden is Dead, GM is Alive".

At many Islamic Nations the over 1.5 Billion Islamic Believers respond with "Obama, Obama, We Are All Osama". As they believe that the Great Satan (US), President Obama has just declared War on Islam. This is worse than the violence of the Pastor Threatening to Burn the Holy Koran; Worse than bragging that you murdered the Pope, while still at Italy; Worse than any cartoons of Mohammad; etc.. As Osama Bin Laden was their Greatest Holy Warrior of Islam Superstar.

        http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-pJGX1JzyFc

        http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=udSEcQbM308

Ansar Al Shariah plans the attacks on the US Consulate (not too far away from them, since they started at Benghazi to overthrow US Ally President Gaddaffi) to coincide with Osama Bin Laden's Greatest Defeat of the Great Satan (US), 9/11.

During the over 7 hour Attack President Obama as Commander In Chief refuses to us any of the US Military Forces of US AFRICOM located less than 2 hours away by slow propeller driven C-130s or US Military Helicopters. A unarmed RQ (drone) is sent instead of a MQ (armed drone) or AC-130 with the munitions capable of being terminally guided by the Ex USN SEALs of the US Ambassador.

The Commander of US AFRICOM, General Ham, volunteers the US Military Forces of US AFRICOM, President Obama opposes and demands that General Ham submit his Letter of Resignation and go on Retirement, just like President Obama did to General McKiernan (Commander ISAF Afghanistan), General McChrystal (Commander ISAF Afghanistan after General McKiernan), etc..

US Citizens at the US Consulate of Benghazi are murders by Ansar Al Shariah. SOS Clinton states, "Funding not the issue", take a guess what the "issue" was (hint: who not what, as Ordered "Low US Presence at Libya" while the US Ambassador and LTC Wood stated since February increased US Military (not Libyan Security).).

Ansar Al Shariah goes to Algeria, Tunisia, then attack Mali.

Presidential Candidate Romulan during the Presidential Debates mentions Mali, President Obama is caught like a "Deer in the Headlights" (blank stare of ignorance, knows nothing).

        I. US Military Asymmetric Warfare Forces previously after years of consecutive tours at Afghanistan while on R&R, Leaves, at CONUS and on Training Status are pulled off of R&R and Leaves and sent to US AFRICOM, and arrive long before the FBI. We told those that were creating US AFRICOM to learn Arabic and Islam; and NOT some obscure African Languages. After securing certain things at Libya given to US AFRICOM the US Military Asymmetric Warfare Forces are Ordered deployed back to Afghanistan, instead of going back on R&R, Leaves and Training Status.

        J. Summary, President Obama's Ordered Overthrow of US Ally President Gaddaffi destabilized the Entire Continent of Africa, as US Ally President Gaddaffi and his Libyan Military were the only one's keeping the Holy Warriors of Islam in check and stuck fighting at Libya, using the money from his sales of Libyan Oil to the US European Allies, and using the lives of the Libyan Citizens of his Libyan Military (part of the deal he made to become a US Ally).

The Ally of the Fundamentalist Islamic Shia Republic of Iran, the Chinese got the Libyan Oil, not the US European Allies, this makes the other African Nations Resources of Strategic Importance to the US European Allies. Also the Mediterranean Ports of Libya allow the Holy Warriors of Islam closer locations to attack the US European Allies (still considered the "Crusaders" by Islamic Believers). Former US Ally Egypt was Strategic to attack US Ally Libya, also Egypt's Strategic Suez Canal, locations closer to attack US Ally Israel, locations closer to support the Hamas Warlords and Army of Islam Gaza. Former US Ally Iraq was Strategic to gain the Support of the Chinese and Russian Federation (Money for Iraqis Oil, Technology, Weapons, etc. for the Fundamentalist Islamic Shia Republic of Iran).

The US and US Allies Losses due to President Obama's Failed Foreign Polices are irreversable and permanent as the Fundamentalist Islamic Shia Republic of Iran, Chinese, and Russian Federation are building up their 21st Century Military Forces to secure and protect all their gains from the US And US Allies losses of Strategic Resources Worldwide (required for the current US Standard of Living and the future US Alternative Energy), losses of Strategic Locations Worldwide, and the losses of Vital Strategic US Allies Worldwide.

The Longterm Strategic Goal of the Chinese and Russian Federation has been to get the US and US Allies out of their Backyards (Resources). The Chinese and Russian Federation using the Fundamentalist Islamic Shia Republic of Iran as their "Proxy Fighter", the Fundamentalist Islamic Shia Republic of Iran using the Holy Warriors of Islam as their "Proxy Fighters" Worldwide.

Of the almost thousand of us that started with the US Military Training Teams to US Ally Iraq during the Iran Iraq Wars, rotated to Operation Cyclone, that were preventing the above from occuring, only a few dozen of have survived. With most of us going back on Retirement again very soon, so these problems created by President Obama that negated all of our decades of work (many of our peers deaths) will all be the problem of Generation X and Generation Y.

Al-Qaida-linked militants claimed Friday that they were holding two American hostages and would exchange them for two people being held in the United States

BUT, BUT, BUT, BUT Barrack Hussein and Joe "Bite Me" Biden said Al-Qaida was dead, terrorism was gone, the world is A-O-K now!

How dare these terrorists make a liar out of our Incompetent-In-Chief.

When are you limp-wristed Libbies going to learn that killing Osama Porn Laden was simply symbolic for our benefit? Terrorism is NOT a face on a Wanted Poster.

Al-Qaida is a global movement. Killing an insignificant figure-head means nothing to the rising tide of terrorism in the world. As much as you want the murder of Osama Porn Laden to be relevant, he was, for about 3 days after he was killed.

There are 1.6 billion Muslims in the world. One Muslim is born every second. Out of all these new Muslims even if only a small percentage are being influenced, indoctrinated and trained for Jihad this "war on terrorism" will go on for decades.

        Al-Qaida is not going away.

Osama Porn Laden was significant to us because of 9/11, no more, no less. He is no longer relevant as the extremists keep showing the world with their involvements now further and further into Northern Africa. Once we leave Afghanistan, if we leave Afghanistan, their sphere of influence will grow again and their heroin driven funding will grow even bigger than it is now.

It’s a shame we didn’t elect someone that isn’t sympathetic to terrorism.

Every accomplishment of this President is a personal injury to them.

Yep. Let the record speak for itself:

          • Highest number of US households in poverty in the history of America.
          • Highest sustained unemployment since the Great Depression.
          • Highest number of US households on food stamps and other government assistance in history (and expected to climb in government expenditures 80% over the next decade).
          • Highest number of college graduates without jobs after graduation in two generations.
          • Record deficit spending that surpasses every single president, combined.
          • The first time ever credit downgrading of US debt.

But hey man, Obama is cool! (And he is, to be sure). No worries, college kids, you can still live off your parents when you can't find a job. Enjoy your next four years, America, you massive majority 51% voted for him again, so have fun!

Those of you blaming Obama and his administration:

YES it sucks this happened. But remember this is a PRIVATE COMPANY owned facility. Those Americans are COMPANY EMPLOYEES. The US cannot protect these people who choose to live abroad in countries that have Al Quida operating there. Or would you rather we forbid Americans from living in those countries to work for those companies?

Secondly, Obama has not made a mess of the Middle East. It is NOT WORSE since he took office because of Obama. He has killed the top leadership of Al Quida these miltiants are from a loosely affiliated group

Do you realize that when these kinds of htings (Benghazi -like and like this) happened during the Bush administration you MUST NOT HAVE NOTICED? Do you realize that MANY MORE embassy attacks and deaths of Americans happened under Bush? See Dems at that time did not create a blaming witch hunt directed at the Bush administration when these things happened. So maybe it did not come to your attention.

You have to work to have them not happen but at the same time an administration can't control international events.

You do realize that ten years ago thousands of Americans died on our own soil under the watch of another Presidents'a admin, right? Did you want HIS head then?

You have to look at your own hypocracy.

-Gaddhafi was overthrown because he had plans to to nationalize Libya's all, had taken steps to so and go against OPEC quotas.

-Well this would not completely disrupt oil resources, would de-stabilize it as far as prices, the intelligence community decided that this would not fare well for an already fragile economy

-Ambassador Stevens were was not an Ambassador, he was a CIA operative helping push this through, if his body were not in the possession of the Libyans after the attack and the storming of the CIA outpost not publicized, we would have not known about this.

Laurali - Secondly, Obama has not made a mess of the Middle East. It is NOT WORSE since he took office because of Obama.

We have survived Operations at Islamic Nations since the US Military Training Teams to US Ally Iraq during the Iran Iraq Wars, rotated to Operation Cyclone.

PRESIDENT OBAMA AND HIS FAILED FOREIGN POLICIES F**KED UP THE "MIDDLE EAST" AND AFRICA (ISLAMIC NATIONS) PERMANENTLY AND IRREVERSIBLY.

THAT IS A FACT, NOT YOUR OPINION Laurali.

The Mission to Locate and Capture Osama Bin Laden was a Presidential Delegated Mission by President Bush (43) since the 9/11 2001 Attacks, as Delegated with Presidential Authority and Authorization to the Director of the CIA, Commander US Military Special Operations Command, Commander US Military Joint Special Operation Command. The Presidential Authorize the Termination of Osama Bin Laden occured after President Bush (43) Amended the US No Assassination Policy in 2006; since President Clinton (42) kept using the US No Assassination Policy to NOT authorized the US Military Asymmetric Warfare Teams to Terminate OBL so that they could go home to their families ever since President Clinton let Osama Bin Laden go after the 1993 First World Trade Center Bombings.

Laurali - He has killed the top leadership of Al Quida these miltiants are from a loosely affiliated group

President Obama did NOT kill anyone, the US Military Asymmetric Warfare Forces attached the CIA's SAD/SOG did. President Obama just happened to be in office when the Mission occured. And if you say no, no, no, then you let us all go back on Retirement, since President Obama is going to suit up and kill all the Al Quada, Taliban, Al Sheebah, etc. (uh huh, he is going to kill Millions of Holy Warriors of Islam by himself, like you said he killed the top leadership of Al Quada.).

2009 US/State memos were professional- they warned of Al Qaeda in Maghreb gathering strength (leaked Wikileaks) Then the US Amb. was very professional- now in 2012 when the terrorist raid had been going on for a day- US Amb. is tweeting of Rubik's cube (that makes MLK picture)- no warnings to other Americans- so blase not even mentioning that Americans are hostages to AQ terrorists. The last update- 22 foreigners are unaccounted for- skirmished with terrorists still ongoing-bunkered down in localities. The nationalities of the Mokhtar Belmokhtar Bigades (or Khalid Abul Abbas Brigades)- 2 Algerians dead (incl. the leader of terror attack Tahar Ben Cheneb- 3 EGYPTIANS (Jama'al al Islamiya- same ones who attacked US/Cairo Emb- al-Zawahiri's old terro pals)- 2 Libyans (LIFG- whom HRC claimed to have gone democratic- taken off terror list)- 2 Tunisians, - 1 Malian- 1 Frenchman (most certainly aFrench Algerian). This terror attack was planned way ahead (of any Mali intervention by French to root out Ansar Dine)- they had exact knowledge of the Norwegian Statoil run Tigantourine gas field layout/complexes/ timetable for workers' buses/workers'whereabouts. They also were very heavily armed (came from Libya over the border with mostly Libyan heavy arsenal).

in 2002 when the US Consulate in the Karachi, Pakistan, was attacked and 10 were killed?

Or in 2004 when the US embassy in Uzbekistan was attacked and two were killed and another nine injured?

THESE TWO ONLY ARE WORSE THAN BENGHAZI BUT SEEMINGLY THE RIGHT FORGETS THAT THESE THINGS DO HAPPEN UNDER ALL PRESIDENTS (well MORE under Bush).

How about in 2004, when the US Consulate in Saudi Arabia was stormed and 8 lost their lives?

There is more: In 2006, armed men attacked the US Embassy in Syria and one was murdered.

Then in 2007 a grenade was thrown at the US Embassy in Athens.

In 2008, the US Embassy in Serbia was set on fire.

In 2008, bombings in the US Embassy in Yemen killed 10.

Notice the dates, all before the Obama administration.

Condolences to the loved ones of the hostages who were killed.

That having been said, these were private citizens working for a private non-American owned corporation. This facility employed people of many nationalities who chose to work there, who were well compensated for the danger of working in a remote location in a nation with an unstable political situation and who understood the risks this involved.

We do not hold the President responsible every time there is a workplace attack here in the U.S. at a privately owned facility (or even a publicly owned facility.) So, exactly how does a militant attack in Algeria on a facility owned by British, Norwegian and Algerian investors reflect anything about President Obama's foreign policies?

Oh, and Bob James, you owe me your pay check. Of course we did not negotiate with terrorists.

Yes, that is what the headline implied, Grandpa. There are hostages from non-Western countries involved in this situation, and no one at this point knows which hostages survived the attack. To mention only Westerners in the headline and the first paragraph certainly diminishes the deaths of any Japanese, Malaysian and Algerian hostages who were killed in the attack.

It seems safe to assume that a Western media outlet would focus first on Westerners. I'm sure the headlines in Japan spoke first of the Japanese citizens, the headlines in Malaysian spoke first of their citizens and so forth.

Why anyone would be offended by this is beyond me.

If you follow that line of reasoning, Backcountry, you could argue that this is an American news service. So why not specifically mention Americans? Or English speakers? I don't think many Norwegians read this either, yet they are among the Western hostages. If news is supposed to be unbiased, the story should be about all the hostages, not focusing on those from countries with Western European cultural ties.

Our economy and the political world is global now. The news should reflect this. Many non-Westerners, particularly those working overseas for multinational corporations, have ties all over the world. My own spouse is from a non-Western country, and spent several years working in other countries. I have met many couples like us. Hence, there are many "Western" people who ARE interested in what happens to non-Westerners.

Were non-Westerners excluded from the story??? No, they just didn't make the headlines.

Check the headlines from a Japanese source- "Some Japanese confirmed safe but fate of others unknown"- http://www.japantimes.co.jp/text/nn20130118x1.html

The outrage! How dare they focus only on Japanese when there were other nationalities involved. /sarcasm

So Algiers doesnt want US help....well I'm pretty sure had our special forces went in there chances are this would have been a much better planned operation. Yes the fault absolutely lies with the terrorists but there is a responsibility to handle the rescue properly. If they dont want our troops plenty of the countries that have citizens as hostages have very well trained forces for this op.

Jen, the bus full of employees was escorted (that means security) by more than one vehicle when they were ambushed. BP is only one of the many owners of this company also. Get your garbage out of here, all you people who hate anyone or anything with power or money make me want to puke. I've never been hired by a poor person, I don't know about you so get your story straight before posting such a stupid comment.

Talk about having it both ways....

An Obama administration official, speaking on background, said the U.S. was not aware of the Algerian raid in advance.

Before the operation, the U.S. had urged the Algerians to be cautious and encouraged them to make the safety of the hostages their top priority.

Is it the news site or the White House... They WERE NOT AWARE of the raid in advance, BUT... before the Operation the US Urged caution.

However, those in this Country who view everything with a sick, totaly ridiculous, mf view point, would necessarily come up with a statement like "These are all excellent Obamaexcuses!!". One suggestion, Ron, climb back into your bigoted hole and shovel the dirt back on top.

The administration was not specifically informed prior to this raid about this particular raid.

If this mission went successfully, of course everyone would have been hailing Obama regardless of US involvement.

But unfortunately since it was unsuccessful, we'll just say he had no clue about it and blame Bush, Congress, and access to "assault rifles".

It's perfect logic, since either way, you can't lose.

Mikki...what exactly makes Carter and Obama the "worst" presidents? The fact that they're both liberal? Jimmy Carter didn't botch the Iranian hostage situation. In fact, long ago I read a book that said Carter was working hard on that rescue, then George HW Bush moved in and delayed the rescue so that it would happen after Reagan's inauguration. Sorry, I don't have a link. Read that long ago. And Obama had absolutely nothing to do with this situation. You can't give credit or blame for every thing that happens during an administration.

he didn't go get the hostages the Algerians did. They may have not let Americans on their soil. But that's immaterial really 'cause it's too early to draw any conclussions as we are still in the middle of things so NO ONE including ou knows yet what the US has done or is doing or will be doing for those hostages if anything

I know, it is probably jumping the gun to make assumptions about the Algerians without knowing all the facts... even with the Seals things can get fubared, such as in Grenada or Panama.

This was over the French being in Mali. Our men were working at the plant that was attacked by the terrorist.

We were not informed of anything until it was taken over. Then the President urged the Alegerian's to make the hostages their main interest. The Alegerian's leaders did not heed that message and wanted it over and it did not matter at what cost. They wanted to prove they could handle it on their own. It did not work out like we would have liked. Any of our forces could have handled the job better with different results. But, remember, the USA thinks it is better than everyone else. Just another example of us proving we are the BEST!!!!!

Not everything has to be a battle of the left and the right. This should be a fight about Americans in a hostage situtation. We as AMERICANS should be po'd at the terrorist. We need to show the world that we as Americans stand together against acts of violence involving any American, any where in the world!!!

People, please, there is plenty for us to be bickering about without it being his fault or their fault. We need to pull ourselves out of the internal fueding and let the world know NOT TO MESS WITH AMERICANS!!

Personally, I did not realize that it was Obama's or Americas responsibility to police a private corporate installation in a sovereign country....but hey, whatever floats your boat. "Rob69" I would like your Avatar better if you took that 18 inch long finger of yours and stuck it up your nose....much more fitting!

The blame game is on if full splendor. This is a sovereign country and they get to handle things as they wish. If they are inept, so be it, and if hostages are killed because the Algerian Commandos blew it, well too bad. If you are going to work on this continent be prepared to die as they are on whole barbaric. You don't have Seal Team6 at your disposal and they don't have to get advice or ask the US anything in advance. How arrogant of the US to think that the rest of the world has to get our permission to do something in their own country. If people died they had to know the risks and believed the risks were worth the money paid to them to work in that environment. Anywhere in the world that has targets of value they are vulnerable with these Islamic morons roaming the world. When they are finally eliminated we can live in peace again.

What a slippery word terrorists has become...isn't the president a terrorists whenever a drone strike is made in a country the US is not at war with...terrorists is an inflammatory word such as using the phrase "protect the US citizens" whenever the US wants to start a war such as Vietnam...if the Benghazi massacre was permitted without military intervention because of high job risks then why the concern in Algeria...

The Algerian military used missiles in a hostage situation. They had to have known the outcome but didn't care.

Once again, Obama's been caught flat footed, looking in the mirror and patting himself on the back. This is what happens when your allies don't trust you and your enemies don't fear you.

I say we show our thanks to Obama voters by not hiring them at our workplaces. Fitting for a group of brain donors who stuck us with this a s shole for another 4 years.

You are the Democrats best media tool. All you do with those immature comments is reinforce that Republicans will lose more logical voters in future elections. Is that your intention or are you actually a Democrat?

Obama Lies: The whiny bitch act is getting old. You lost, get over it.

btw do you really think our Allies would trust Mitt Romney when most Americans don't? Most Europeans I've talked to like Obama. He actually makes us more respected around world rather than a president like Bush Jr. who presented an image of a dumb, inbred hick.

Most Europeans are glad we have Obama, that way they do not have to deal with the likes of him. They know he will do nothing. Just like Libya, Syria, Iran, and all the other flash points. At least the Algerians did something, chances were the Hostages would have been killed anyway. If you have hostages in a vehicle you target the driver. Who respects us more now, Surely not the Europeans, they have gone to more consertive governments, except the French. The Arabs know Obama is a joke, and laugh. The world is haveing more problems and Obama plays more golf.

I knew BP was involved in some way.

It seems that every where BP puts any kind of a facility to start raping the earth and destroying massive amounts of the ecosystem, death and destruction appear as if by magic.

BP puts its mass killing touch in all places on earth, and the eventual result is that some kind of MASS MURDER HAPPENS, whether it is to the wildlife, to humans or just totally destroying the environment and ecosystems.

BP is nothing more than A MASS MURDERING COMPANY THAT DESTROYS EVERYTHING IT TOUCHES.

Time to get rid of this murder who kills with the approval of the governments whose lands they are in.
