A Canadian national coordinated the Islamist militant attack on a gas plant in Algeria where dozens of foreign workers were taken hostage and at least 37 were slain, Algerian Prime Minister Abdelmalek Sellal told a Monday news conference.
Sellal said Monday that 37 foreign workers from eight nations had been killed and another five were still missing. He also said 29 militants were killed with three captured alive, Reuters reported.
He was speaking as dramatic stories began to emerge from hostages who escaped the bloody end to the siege at the Tiguentourine plant near In Amenas.
Reuters had reported earlier Monday that an Algerian security source said two of the attackers found dead at the gas plant were Canadian. That report could not be immediately confirmed.
Canadian authorities acknowledged that they were investigating reports of the involvement of at least one of their citizens.

In a statement, Canada's Department of Foreign Affairs said it was "aware of reports that Canadians may have been involved in the hostage-taking in Algeria."
"We are pursuing all appropriate channels to seek further information and are in close contact with Algerian authorities," the statement added. "Canada condemns in the strongest possible terms this deplorable and cowardly attack and all terrorist groups which seek to create and perpetuate insecurity in the Sahel countries of West Africa."
One American, three Britons and two Romanians have been confirmed dead by their home countries and Reuters, citing Japanese government sources, reported that at least nine Japanese nationals also had been killed. An Algerian security source also told Reuters that at least one Frenchman had died.
About 800 people, including some 700 Algerians and 100 foreigners, managed to escape after militants stormed the compound on Wednesday last week.
During Monday's news conference, Sellal provided additional details on the attack, saying the initial objective had been to capture a bus carrying foreign workers and hold them hostage. He also said the attackers tried to blow up the gas facility by planting explosives in a gas pipe and trying to detonate it Friday night.
Algerian troops launched their first raids on the site on Thursday, but the standoff continued until Saturday, when government forces captured or killed the remaining militants and ended the siege.
Among the escaped hostages was Alan Wright, 37, of Scotland, one of 22 Britons who survived the ordeal and were flown back to the U.K.
'Really bad situation'
Wright told ITV News that he had gone to work as usual Wednesday, but then the power went out.
"We thought it was just a normal shutdown," he said. "Then somebody said, 'There's been a terrorist attack.'"
Wright described gathering food, water and satellite phones and hiding in an office with his co-workers. They huddled there as chaos ensued.
"You could hear gunfire outside, machine-gun fire and mortars and everything going off," he said. "Sometimes rapidly, sometimes quiet for a while, but we knew it was a really, really bad situation."

Wright said Algerian employees among the group eventually decided they were better off making an escape attempt.
They provided clothing and hats to help the foreign workers "blend in," he said, and cut a hole in a fence to escape.
They were spotted by Algerian soldiers, who rescued them.
"I'm just delighted to be home," Wright said. "My thoughts now are with my friends and their families who don't know what's happened to their loved ones."
The terrorist monitoring service SITE said Monday that the al-Qaida-linked Mulathameen Brigade, which claimed the mass hostage-taking, threatened to carry out more attacks unless Western powers ended what it called an assault on Muslims in neighboring Mali, Reuters reported.

Looks like Canada may have the problem the US does... they may have to rethink their immigration policies. If these two terrorists were indeed Canadian, they were most likely naturalized.
Let's close the borders, people. Protect our resources AND our security. Immigration of spouses and family of citizens only until proper and thorough vetting can be done, and until backlogs are clear.
Immigration doesn't need a "comprehensive reform." It isn't 'broken' it's just so full it isn't being properly checked out. And Canada's open door policy has become an invitation to danger. We may be needing troops on the Canadian border soon.

The reality is that this is a situation where those who have nothing to lose come under the influence of someone who wants to blame the US for their own personal or the failures within their country. Since the United States is the best country in the world, ever, we have become the target of every loser with a gun, a microphone, or a computer.
Notice how the article indicates the group is Al-Queda linked. Well, its the middle east, a muslim terrorist is involved. Those two things alone make it "Al-Queda" linked. Al-Queda is the 21st Century boogey-man. They have replaced "Communist Insurgents" as the bad guy.

I lived in North Africa and there was one common thread among hate from the local populace- envy. They wanted what we had, materially and freedomwise. Somehow, I think that's a lot of the problem today.
The United States, Canada, Great Britain, Germany, Italy, in fact most of the Western or Westernized countries are very open. We allow students to study at our Universities ( and did in the 1960's) and expose them to ideas that they wouldn't be allowed to think at their home countries. We give them ideas. And an idea can be a dangerous thing.
Was Bin Laden jealous of what we here have, both Canadian and American. I think so. He had money, but momma controlled it. That's pretty much not the case here. Sure a lot of the Saudi's are rich, but they import their workers, who are exposed to Saudi ideals. And a lot of the Saudi's are very hardline Muslims.
Most of the people I met liked me individually, and since I took the time to learn Arabic and the local dialetcs, and in Arabic there are more than just about any and all languages, I was able to talk with them and let them know that at times I longed at times for their simple lives. I had grown up part of the time on a farm in a very rural community and it was a simple life, which I longed for, yet loved having lived in Europe and Africa. Not to mention metropolitan and suburban United States.
I'm of a strong conviction that one of the things that makes the terrorists, including the FARC in Columbia among the many terrorist groups around the world, is envy. We'll never get rid of that, but if we could, perhaps there would be a lot less terrorism today.
Groups of Muslims that believe one way don't like other Muslims that believe another, much like many of the Christian sects around the world. The Christian sects haven't terrorized other sects yet, but it could happen, much like the Muslim sects.
In the Algerian attacks, it wasn't the fact that there were non-Muslim workers there. It was the fact that there was something there that could be attacked, and to help the attack along, it was quite out of the way. But it was the Algerians that took care of the problem. And most Algerians are believers in Islam.
The Algerians did it right. They went in, took no prisoners and stopped the terrorists. Mali was the excuse, it wasn't the reason. And I have a hard time believing it was the Tuaregs that were involved. That tribe has been around for thousands of years, desert dwellers all the time. They weren't in the non-desert area of Mali, rather the part that was in the lower Sahara. Most of the Tuaregs live in Libya and Egypt. But they are used to roam the entire desert, not caring what you believe in, but in their way of life.
The problem is that they still live in a world of their own where they can still do that. It's the 21st Century now, not the 5th BCE nor the 15 CE. And their way of life is disentegrating. So envy for their old ways of life drives them.
And terrorists of all stripes will use any every excuse to attack. Perhaps the worst of the terror they spread, and it's their own people they seem to terrorize, is the fact that nearly all of the posters here believe that they are going to come here and use carbombs, pipe bombs, IED's and the many weapons that are at the disposal of their groups. That's terror, making people believe that they, the terrorists, could come here or Canada or wherever and use those weapons.
As Franklin Roosevelt said, the only fear we have is fear itself. If we have a lot less fear of something, perhaps we could get rid of the hate spewed on many threads on the many sites.
And perhaps I'm a pollyanna, someone who does believe we can mostly get along.

Canada has a looming problem with the large numbers of Muslims who have immigrated there over the past few decades, they are a much bigger percentage of the population than Muslims in the US. And it is one reason why the border between our countries is now no longer the "longest undefended border in the world" as they used to say. Very sad for one who grew up on the border, criss-crossing it quite regularly, to go shopping and dine and visit friends.
Now it is such a pain, and you get treated as a criminal by the border patrol of both countries, no one wants to cross......it really has wrecked many local businesses on both sides which depended on day-trippers, besides making things hard for the many bi-national families along there.

Why is this surprising? Muslims live almost everywhere, and a certain percentage of them (a small percentage we hope) will choose the dark path. But the majority of them are peaceful.

People lump persons of one religion together and if one is a terrorist then all must be terrrorists. If that's so, then I can lump all persons who are Catholic into terrorists due to actions by a few in Ireland.
I don't know what to think. Terrorists come in all shapes and sizes. A man or woman who terrorizes verbally his/her mate, I think, is just as bad as a person who beats that mate. And that's terrorism.
But this is due to Mali and the Tuareg? I think not. I think it's just because they want to and can. There is absolutely no way to protect everywhere in the world. It's just too big. And there are too many people who want to do harm to others, and not just Muslims.
I still don't know. I'm tired of violence, especially gun violence. I want it to go away, although I do know that's a pipe dream. I just don't want everyone to lump all who pratice Islam into terrorists.
First we are a name, then we are a gender, then we are a race, then we are a nationality, then we are a citizen, then we are a religion, this is how it should be, but so many have it the other way around. Whether the perpetrators of this act are Canadian or American, or Russian, or Chinese, or Indian, or Australian shouldn't be the point. The point is individuals, with NAMES, decided that this was something they had to do. That their lives and the lives of anyone who got in the way were less important than the action they were intent on taking. An action almost wholly dedicated to demonstrating the depth of their hatred for those who aren't aligned with their narrow minded beliefs.
Whatever their reasons were, there is no justification for taking others lives. So many in our country and around the world today have the same mentality. There is a large population of potentially threatening individuals who lump people together. Their world view is black and white, Christian or Muslim, American or Pakistani, Democrat or Republican, male or female, it is all the same ignorant way of trying to assimilate/understand/interpret the world. It couldn't be more flawed, a world view based on cowardice, ignorance, laziness! These people condemn or praise the actions of whole groups of people when it is individuals within a group that deserve recognition for their INDIVIDUAL behavior, be it good or bad.
It is the same mentality that is used to condemn "big government" or "gun owners" or "liberals" or "conservatives" which of course, are all groups of INDIVIDUALS...these people are the weak minded ammunition that is exploited by people who actually think and understand their value. In any given power struggle, the thinkers will manipulate the lazy minded bigots, by appealing to their ignorance and unconcealed bias.
The answer is education, tolerance, courage, COMMUNICATION! We all tend to lump groups together but if we recognize the evil such tendencies create and commit to avoid this flawed way of thinking we might just find that individuality and personal responsibility/accountability are the solution to many of the challenges facing an ever more crowded planet.

I agree that there will be criminals in every group of people and you cannot paint all with the same brush, However, it cannot be ignored that the only group in the world that has and continues to use religion as a rationale for acts of terrorism are muslims. Islam is one of the most controlling and oppressive religions in the world with the distinction that it does not tolerate any criticizm. History has shown that when you have a majority of muslims in any country, democratic freedoms for the rest disappear. All this violence is terrible and I wish for it to go away as well. However, the fanatical ideology of muslim extremists, with tacit approval of their "peaceful law abiding" bretheren, will only get worse until it is firmly dealt with and eradicated.

Janstince - I don't have any illusions about the potential for every religion to be used to oppress those that are of different faiths. I don't believe in promoting any religion nor do I believe that it is necessary for a society to exist. However, it is a phenomena that humanity has needed over milennia and will probably cling to for the foreseeable future. The US has its share of Christian fundamentalists, India its Hindu fundamentalists, Israel its Jewish fundamentalists, etc., but they don't impose laws that are based upon religious beliefs of the majority. This in stark differerence from countries like Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iran, etc., where religion of the majority is the State law. Some may have minorities of other faiths, but these minorities exist at the mercy of the majority and their religious freedoms are severely limited. Until you have experienced life in these countries and how unique Islam is in fashioning its "legal system" and in directing "ordinary" muslims to be silent about their fundamentalist factions.

Please, the Christian Taliban in this country (USA) alone wants to do everything the mullahs do already (it's called Fatwah Envy). They just don't like brown people, or the particulars of their religious frenzy (Christians have their own religious frenzy), so they otherize the Muslims. What gets to me is that you all talk about Muslims as though they are other, not human. I look at Christians much the same way as they look at Muslims. I have no trust for anything religious. People are people, and some will do you wrong without any god, and some will do you right despite their god. But religion in general is a way for us to short circuit our brains, and it's really lazy (intellectually), besides.

You prove my point by saying that they would like to emulate the Muslim Taliban. Well, I too agree that they would like to but they can't and the reason why they cannot is because the rest of our society and OUR LAWS will not allow it. I understand your need to be fair in your criticism and place all religions on tne same pedestal, and on a fundamental level, I would say the same. However, in your need to be fair you are deliberately ignoring facts. I am not a bigot and have never implied as you put it that muslims are "other" or "not human". However, these humans who live in countries where the state religion is Islam do not dare criticise their religion, like you are doing with Christianity, and hope to live. Why, because their religion doe not allow it, and they as a society have made their laws are directly based on it. Why is that? Are they not capable as "humans" to allow for tolerance and free speech?

As a Canadian living in toronto area, I don't see a huge problem...even though the largest concentration of muslims are living in this area at 3.1%...as a far as the border thing, this is the cost of 9/11. we should do a better job of Defending our S border with Mexico and also protect these "vital" gas/oil/resource producing facilities world-wide. if not China will move in and confiscate what is left (if any)of Africa's Natural Resources.
