Five people were shot dead in the Egyptian city of Suez during nationwide protests against President Mohamed Morsi on Friday, the second anniversary of the uprising that toppled Hosni Mubarak.
One of the dead was a member of the security forces, medics said. Another 280 civilians and 55 security personnel were injured, officials said, in demonstrations fueled by anger at the president and his Islamist allies in the Muslim Brotherhood.
Thousands of opponents of Morsi massed in Cairo's Tahrir Square - the cradle of the revolt against Mubarak - to rekindle the demands of a revolution they say has been hijacked by Islamists who have betrayed its goals.
Street battles erupted in Cairo, Alexandria, Suez and Port Said. Arsonists attacked at least two state-owned buildings as symbols of government were targeted. An office used by the Muslim Brotherhood's political party was also torched.
The Jan. 25 anniversary laid bare the divide between the Islamists and their secular rivals.
This schism is hindering the efforts of Morsi, elected in June, to revive an economy in crisis and reverse a plunge in Egypt's currency by enticing back investors and tourists.
Inspired by the popular uprising in Tunisia, Egypt's revolution spurred further revolts across the Arab world. But the sense of common purpose that united Egyptians two years ago has given way to internal strife that had already triggered bloody street battles last month.
"Our revolution is continuing. We reject the domination of any party over this state. We say no to the Brotherhood state," Hamdeen Sabahy, a popular leftist leader, told Reuters.

The Brotherhood decided against mobilizing for the anniversary, wary of the scope for more conflict after December's violence, stoked by Morsi's decision to fast-track an Islamist-tinged constitution rejected by his opponents.
The Brotherhood denies accusations that it is seeking to dominate Egypt, labeling them a smear campaign by its rivals.
Death in Suez
There were conflicting accounts of the lethal shooting in Suez. Some witnesses said security forces had opened fire in response to gunfire from masked men.
News of the deaths capped a day of violence which started in the early hours. Before dawn in Cairo, police battled protesters who threw petrol bombs and firecrackers as they approached a wall blocking access to government buildings near Tahrir Square.
Clouds of tear gas filled the air. At one point, riot police used one of the incendiaries thrown at them to set ablaze at least two tents erected by youths, a Reuters witness said.

Skirmishes between stone-throwing youths and the police continued in streets around the square into the day. Ambulances ferried away a steady stream of casualties.
Protesters echoed the chants of 2011's historic 18-day uprising. "The people want to bring down the regime," they chanted. "Leave! Leave! Leave!" chanted others as they marched towards the square.
"We are not here to celebrate but to force those in power to submit to the will of the people. Egypt now must never be like Egypt during Mubarak's rule," said Mohamed Fahmy, an activist.
There were similar scenes in Suez and Alexandria, where protesters and riot police clashed near local government offices. Black smoke billowed from tires set ablaze by youths.
In Cairo, police fired tear gas to disperse a few dozen protesters trying to remove barbed-wire barriers protecting the presidential palace, witnesses said. A few masked men got as far as the gates before they were beaten back.
Tear gas was also fired at protesters who tried to remove metal barriers outside the state television building.
Outside Cairo, protesters broke into the offices of provincial governors in Ismailia and Kafr el-Sheikhin the Nile Delta. A local government building was torched in the Nile Delta city of al-Mahalla al-Kubra.
Badie calls for 'serious competition'
With an eye on parliamentary elections likely to begin in April, the Brotherhood marked the anniversary with a charity drive across the nation. It plans to deliver medical aid to one million people and distribute affordable basic foodstuffs.
Writing in Al-Ahram, Egypt's flagship state-run daily, Brotherhood leader Mohamed Badiesaid the country was in need of "practical, serious competition" to reform the corrupt state left by the Mubarak era.

"The differences of opinion and vision that Egypt is passing through is a characteristic at the core of transitions from dictatorship to democracy, and clearly expresses the variety of Egyptian culture," he wrote.
Morsi's opponents say he and his group are seeking to dominate the post-Mubarak order. They accuse him of showing some of the autocratic impulses of the deposed leader by, for example, driving through the new constitution last month.
"I am taking part in today's marches to reject the warped constitution, the 'Brotherhoodisation'of the state, the attack on the rule of law, and the disregard of the president and his government for the demands for social justice," Amr Hamzawy, a prominent liberal politician, wrote on his Twitter feed.
The Brotherhood says its rivals are failing to respect the rules of the new democracy that put the Islamists in the driving seat via free elections.
Six months into office, Morsi is also being held responsible for an economic crisis caused by two years of turmoil. The Egyptian pound has sunk to record lows against the dollar.
The parties that called for Friday's protests list demands including a complete overhaul of the constitution.
Critics say the constitution, which was approved in a referendum, offers inadequate protection for human rights, grants the president too many privileges and fails to curb the power of a military establishment supreme in the Mubarak era.
Morsi'ssupporters say enacting the constitution quickly was crucial to restoring stability needed for economic recovery.

They had better get a government in place that actually promotes religious tolerance and woman's rights. Those are the two things that region needs most, and I have yet to see a government based around the Muslim religion that does tries to even acknowledge either. The biggest problem with the last election, is that after they overthrew Mubarak they had no good choices. It was either Morsi and the Muslim Brotherhood, or Mubarak's remnants. And they just got threw overthrowing Mubarak, so his remnants weren't an option. They won't get anywhere until they can get a viable candidate who isn't obsessed with a religion or a military hawk who will spend their entire budget on the military. Like it or not, Egypt is still important to dealing with that headache that is the middle east. We must hope Morsi and the Muslim Brotherhood get overthrown and replaced with someone more viable to the entire country, and not just male Muslims.

Both Extremeists are anti-American, but (to my knowledge) Extreme Sunni governments haven't trained terrorist groups (yet). So Morsi says he wants tourism to revive the economy. Good idea considering most of the world would like to visit Ancient Egyption ruins, bad idea considering he's creating a country that will be safe for only one group of people.
The more things change the more they stay the same. Unfortunately given the culture and the influence of radical Islam the only real cure for this situation is a purge by the military and the protesters of the current leadership and the Muslim Brotherhood.

The Egyptians simply had no choices. It was either Morsi and his Muslim Brotherhood, or Mubarak's remnants. Neither are acceptable, but they had just overthrown Mubarak. Of course they weren't going to vote the Mubarak's remnants back in. The people in Egypt were in between a rock and a hard place. A lose-lose situation. They went for the loss they didn't just revolt to overthrow. Now it looks as if they will have to revolt again. Hopefully, they'll overthrow Morsi and get better choices this time. Although, I remain skeptical that a country in such chaotic disarray can even manage to do that on their own.
And you are a fool if you honestly believe our government, dysfunctional and painful as it is, would be anywhere near as bad as it is in Egypt. Warts and all, this still isn't anywhere near as bad as some piss in the sand country like Syria or Egypt. Honestly, some people in this country don't know how lucky they are to live here. It's not perfect by any means, but it's still far better than just about anywhere else.

I saw this coming as soon as the Brotherhood was given the right to run even as an outlawed organization. Even when their top candidate had to pull out, Morsi the puppet stepped in. The Brotherhood has a country to run and a caliphate to form. Next stops, Libya, Tunisia and Syria. Perhaps a connection with Iran over both of their favorite terrorist surrogate: Hamas.
Israel will be isolated and Egypt empowered. This will lead to more instability in the region. There is going to be another broader war in that region.
Believe it or not, this war will involve Israel on one side and the following countries on the other:
1. Lebanon
2. Jordan
3. Syria
4. Egypt
5. Gaza.
The victor will be Israel. I think most probably, Israel will use nuclear arms to destroy Damascus as Syria will definitely use chemical weapon when defeat stares in their face. Assad will flee and Islamists will take over Syria for this scenario to play out. When the dust settles, every one will know that USA was not on the side of Israel and that will be good for Americans as no one will blame USA for their defeat! Thank Obama as he will be the Savior of Americans. Then Americans can travel safely everywhere!

As an agnostic, I don't believe in the majority of organized religious texts. However, with all of the comparisons of President Obama to Jesus (and all of the sheeple that blindly hero-worship him), I think that this excerpt rings true.
Ex: The Jan. 18 2013 Newsweek cover "The Second Coming", and countless other Newsweek, and TIME covers with the halo over Obama's head. I am not completely calling the President the Anti-Christ, but he is far, far, away from Sainthood or being Jesus himself.

Actually I am pretty sure that it can be seen in the Koran, the Bible, and the Torah (just worded differently in each). Most of the early religious texts were pretty similar as an attempt to be inclusive.

Jesus wouldn't slap anyone if he returned, he preached exact opposites of the bible; love, peace, freedom of religion, non-violence, and sanctity of character no matter what lifestyle you choose. Most religions, especially Christians, like to use Jesus as if he was some sort of validation to the bible when he in reality had conflicting viewpoints. Religions will forever pick and choose what parts of the bible and history they agree with to fit their current agenda.

As I said when Morsey took office and they passed the constitution allowing the Muslim Clerics to help make the laws this will be another Theocracy just like Iran and Morsey confirmed that when he attempted to pass the law giving him total power and last say on everything. Thank you ever so much for this post Wil Royson. I means a great deal to me and many of us here. I wonder if some of the people who post here realize how they are embarrassing the U.S.? The Egyptians read these articles and posts and become discouraged and even angry that people cannot understand their country as we do. I truly have faith in the Egyptian people for they are good and sane. My American students are consistently surprised by how much the Egyptians know about us, but that we do not know about Egypt.
They also get angry at the foreign press for only negative and horrible incidents. That is one of the reasons why the protestors have asked the foreign press to leave the Square. They truly feel it is their fight.

Also, I would recommend you take courses and even possibly visit Monticello. If you look at our history and Founding Fathers, they were predominantly farmers....not horseman. But instead you will always see the Western News Media covering for ISLAMIC TERRORISM, by using such phrases as: Insurgent, Militant, Protester, Bomber (any word but TERRORISM). How can Democracy exist in a culture that still lives in the Dark Ages? And a Western News Media that continues to cover for them?
You have to understand the region. You have to understand the affect of millions of people denied citizenship or equal rights in the countries they call home.
We must put pressure on Jordan, Kuwait, Bahrain, UAE, etc. to allow these people in their populations full citizenship, absolute free speech (you can go to jail for writing something uncomplimentary about members of royal families there...they must be extremely thin-skinned royals.) Those governments don't fully incorporate them into their society because that would mean extending voting rights, social services, education, etc $$$) As people there are driven out of regions due to war, resources, etc, other countries won't let them in. Look at how the neighboring countries there won't take the refugees from Syria, etc...they may let them live in their countries, but they'll never grant them the full rights that their other citizens have. Google "bidoon". Those people scatter and settle, have children, but that society passes that 'second class' status onto their kids, and their kids' kids, because even the children born in the new country don't ever get status. They can't own a business there, or own property, or allowed to send their kids to certain schools...once you understand how bad off these people really have it, with no sense of a real home, surrounded by reminders that they're 'undesirable' citizens, you understand how vulnerable they are to anti-west propaganda and groups promising change over there while pointing out the hypocrisy of the 'evil United States.' We back revolutions in some countries, not others...to them it looks like Uncle Sam backs monarchies and 'puppets' for oil and resources, who we can exploit...not to help anyone with freedoms really, but to pursue strategic global interests. Unfortunately, I think that has happened over the course of our history in some cases. :(
I'm not saying Islam isn't dangerous...I'm just trying to get to the root of why they hate us so much. If we really want to back democracy and freedoms in the Middle East, and diffuse the anti-west (anti-Democracy) propaganda and sentiment, we need to hold our allies in the region up to the same standards of equal rights for their citizens. Touchy subject for the monarchies over there. (Funny to even say that in 2013, but yeah, those monarchies.)
Anyway, socially I'm a liberal Democrat, defensively I'm a conservative Republican. So, thanks for being that strong voice here. I know we can't defend ourselves from this 'jihad' crap with flowers and hugs and tolerance. I trust and support the military leaders, Pentagon, etc to be the strong hand should diplomacy fail. On that note, we need to make sure they have the funds they need.
