MAKASSAR, Indonesia -- A mob of wild monkeys has gone on a rampage in a village in eastern Indonesia, entering houses and attacking residents, injuring seven people.
One of the victims was listed in critical condition.
Ambo Ella, a spokesman for Sidendeng Rappang District in South Sulawesi province, says the surprise attack by about 10 monkeys happened in Toddang Pulu village.
He said late Wednesday that a 16-year-old boy was badly bitten in Monday’s attack and is being treated at the hospital.
He believes the troop came from a nearby forest protected by a local tribe.
It is unclear why the monkeys, which are usually afraid of humans and flee when they hear human voices, emerged and attacked.
Local authorities are investigating to find out what prompted the attack, which caused panic among villagers.

And this story is different from the actions of radical Islamists how?
Monkeys are taking over.
this kind of thing happens in Houston all the time since Hurricane Katrina took place
If the Indonesian gun laws weren't so strict, there might have been fewer people hurt in the attack.
I doubt that anyone commenting here as far as I can see knows that in that part of the world much like the cow in India, monkeys are looked at as a link between their spirit world and this one. The monkeys walk around freely often fed by villagers and tourists alike. The rampage could have been by a pack that was set off by mating season & territory, especially if they find that it was an all male troop.

Good point, Steve. Hey denver, you're not funny.
actually, I found Denver's comment quite amusing....

It's Steve, the Gestapo! Don't worry if there aren't enough moderators, Steve will do their dirty work. Steve is going to change the world, one article at a time!
I think Steve needs to change his hat to a white-colored one
Seriously Steve.....I agree that the tangential comments are primarily from idiots. But you're coming across a bit like the hall monitor....and no one likes the hall monitor.
Someone should invest in some door locks. If the monkeys could talk, i wonder what kind of abuse they endured by this one family.
Monkey's aren't stupid little creatures. They have a brain and they can and do remember faces of people.
It's the start of the monkey apocalypse! Spank the monkey!

You do know you have to take a break every now and then... I hope!
So, Steve, speaking of staying on topic...!
I wonder if it could maybe be rabies?
That was my thought too. Hope they can test for that in time to treat the people injured if that's the case.
Just celebrating Iran sending a monkey into space..
Not so much celebrating as JEALOUS.
I was thinking they were protesting, especially seeing that it was almost bubblewrapped for the trip.
Obama fans gone wild.
It Figures a bigot lunatic would make a crack about Blacks or The President from this story.
sicken tired and stupid...
Ban assault monkeys!!!!
it's not all the assault monkeys fault...that some assault monkeys are going bananas...ban bananas...
I blame religion. Were the monkeys Muslim or Christian?
Remember, monkeys don't kill people. People with bad monkeys kill people.
Prisons for monkeys now. Isn't that the American way in doing things?
They're getting tired of it.......................ALL of it.
Maybe the monkeys were protesting because they weren't getting thier usual allotment of handouts from the villagers.
....or perhaps they heard that the villagers had new flat screen TVs
Sounds like the work of either toxin or virus ... it would be interesting to learn what the investigation uncovers. I have little faith that there will be a follow-up to this story, though.
Perhaps they should check the surrounding forests for monkey drug labs.
Monkeys on meth - ARISE!
Hey Sicken Tired, bet your racist Albino monkey relatives set them off, with you in the lead.
This isn't news, it happens in Miami almost every day.
Very strange, shades of Alfred Hitcock's film, "The Birds". I wouldn't think that monkeys have the ability for such concerted social action.
I guess they were tired of living in the forest and wanted to take over the village.
My initial guess would be rabies .. I hope that they have started treatment for such in the boy who was bitten.
Good observance.
Even monkeys go berserk in the land of shariah law.
EVOLUTION! This proves it! They're turning into humans!
No, it's DEVOLUTION, they're turning into Democrats, and rioting for more foodstamps and Section 8 housing. On your nickel.
bigger_in_Texas with crap for brains
Which entitlement program(s) are you on, Dave?
Thanks for the racist comment Tex. The Society for the Perpetuation of Sterotyping Texas as Populated by Ignorant S*** Kickers appreciates your effort.
Tex didn't mention anything about race...apparently you have your own assumptions of who's on food-stamps and living in Section 8 housing...
Oh....sorry Peni......not sure how I could possibly have found a post from a guy in Texas suggesting that monekeys are analogous to poor Democrats to be racist. Clearly I'm the one with the problem.
The problem with you Tea Bagger racists is that you are too stupid to realize that may of us will never be stupid enough to buy your nonsensical arguments.
McLovin: I think you meant prejudiced... not racist...
The second tier primates in the USA have assault weapons, why shouln't the rampaging primates in Indonesia have them?
Rifles killed 353 people in 2011 (less than 2% of total gun deaths). Assault rifles were some small percentage of that.
Most gun deaths are suicides (64%) and the vast majority of gun deaths are from handguns. A handful of lunatics that kill people (compared to the vast number of responsible citizens who own AR15s) do not compare to the massive number of deaths caused by gang bangers & drug dealers, wielding handguns.
If you want to absolutely crush gun deaths, end the War on Drugs, which has caused even more crime and death than Prohibition did in the 1920s.
I mean, I know that some people think that more government regulation and banning everything (guns, sodas, drugs, certain foods, etc) is the solution for all problems, but the government bureaucrats and politicians fu*k up almost everything they touch.
Yes, agreeed, Angela--Just look at the plain, hard facts........
pagan, I agree that the total number of deaths from handguns exceeds that from semi-automatic rifles, but you, and others who make that argument, don't mention the fact that the number of deaths per incident is much higher for attacks with the semi-automatic rifles, as evidenced by the attacks at the Aurora CO theater and Sandy Hook, which were directed at innocent people, including young children, as opposed to the majority of handgun attacks based on gangbanger rivalries as you mentioned. Yes, there are many responsible and honest gun owners, I am one, but the sole purpose of the semi-automatic rifle and the expanded capacity magazine is to make killing easier and faster, to drive up the kill count in a shorter period of time, that is the main issue with these weapons. My rifles are all bolt action, and that is good enough for me.
If it is true that close to 2/3 of gun deaths are suicide, then the best policy is for the gov't to give guns away to as many senior citizens as possible. This would save Social Security and Medicare as we know it, and solve the budget crisis as well.
Wil: I suspect a few Korean shopowners in LA would have found a semi-automatic rifle useful during the LA Riots. I also suspect the Syrian and Libyan rebels have found such small arms useful until they were able to secure heavier weapons from government stockpiles and from outside help.
There is not some crisis of assault rifle deaths, except a mass media manufactured crisis which is attempting to exploit people's emotions.
I also find the "sole purpose" argument rather empty and pointless.
The "sole purpose" of the mass media is to make profit for the corporations that own them by sensationalizing the news. (secondary purpose: to serve the political agenda of the owners). Does that mean we should further restrict the 1st Amendment?
Maybe we should consider the reporting of mass murders by the media to be akin to shouting "Fire" in a crowded movie theater, since it will inspire copycats and more death.
I don't believe that a government-managed, trouble-free "utopia" can be created; afterall these stupid fu*kers can't manage a budget let alone pour piss out of a boot with instructions written on the heels.
to wil royson,
in case you hadnt heard, the sandy hook attack was done with 4 pistols, not an assault rifle,
the rifle was left in the car.
further, high capacity magazines are not to "make killing easier"...thats absurd!
they're so you dont hafta keep reloading when you're out shooting.
It was the well-armed Korean shopkeepers who were able to prevent their stores from being looted during the LA riots...as well as protecting themselves and their families from being murdered
Frank, a copy/paste (they won't let my post URLs) from a recent internet report on Sandy Hook:
"At about 9:35 a.m., using his mother's Bushmaster XM15-E2S rifle,[19][20][21] Lanza shot his way through a locked glass door at the front of the school.[22][23] He was wearing black clothing, earplugs and an olive green utility vest carrying magazines for the Bushmaster.[24][25] Initial reports that he had been wearing body armor were incorrect.[26] Some of those present heard initial shots on the school intercom system, which was being used for morning announcements.[15]"
Hugh Betcha, "slavehood",
Slaves indeed... interesting quote here:
"Necessity is the plea for every infringement of human freedom. It is the argument of tyrants; it is the creed of slaves."
William Pitt.
Speech in the House of Commons (18 November, 1783).
Hugh Betcha, "slavehood", God, what a load, not allowing semi-automatic rifles is "slavehood"? Well, we can't by machine guns (.30 cal, .50 cal. BARs, Thompsons, etc.), grenades, mortars, bazookas, so we're already slaves, right?
WWI? what semi-automatic rifles were there in WWI? As for WWII, most of the German and Japanese infantry were equipped with bolt action rifles (if you saw the movie the Longest Day, you may remember the scene where Sal Mineo got killed for mistaking the click-click of a German bolt action rifle for a "cricket" safe sign from one of our guys). Our troops had the semi-automatic M-1 (first the Garand, then the carbine, I preferred the carbine when I had to qualify on the range).
"It [the Garand] was the first semi-automatic rifle to be generally issued to the infantry of any nation.[ Called "the greatest battle implement ever devised" by General George S. Patton,[5] the Garand officially replaced the bolt-action M1903 Springfield as the standard service rifle of the United States Armed Forces in 1936." (copy/paste from the internet).
I can't dispute that more people were killed by bolt action rifles in WWII, but can you back your statement up with verifiable facts, including your source. Seems to me Gen. Patton sure felt the M-1 a us a definite advantage, i.e., we could kill them fster than they could kill us, but what did he know.
pagan, those Korean shop keepers could have protected themselves with shotguns, unless they wanted to shoot looters at 300 yards.
I know what a Garand is. In fact I'm thinking of getting one or more through the Civilian Marksmanship Program that the government has. (I've already taken the first few steps towards such)
The reason Thompson machine guns & such are outlawed was the 1934 Gun Control Act, which was passed because of the proliferation of gangster weapons and gangster killings. (Which was ironically spawned by yet another government attempt at "control", that which was named "Prohibition", which caused the rise of people like Al Capone)
Every time our government clamps down on our freedoms, however stupid they may seem to a specific person who for example DOESN'T drink alcohol, there always seem to be unintended consequences.
In fact, its not just about the Second Amendment or "being slaves" if you can buy an AR. If you look at the big picture, it is just another way the Bill of Rights is being chipped away at, and not just by liberals, but by conservatives as well.
1st Amendment:
1) Smith vs The State of Oregon (regarding religion)
2) Free speech zones, e.g. during the Casey Anthony trial, where they were designated OUTSIDE the court house.
4th Amendment (violated by the Patriot Act):
search and intercept telephone calls, search emails, medical records, financial records, and much more all under the guise of protecting against terrorism and ALL WITHOUT A WARRANT or probable cause.
5th Amendment: due process, coercing confessions & evidence from accused, double jeopardy: "the government now files civil forfeiture cases arguing that criminals should not profit by their crimes; crimes by the way that the accused was found not guilty of. The forfeiture actions essentially are a second bite at the apple for the government under a lower standard of care where citizens are routinely deprived of their property in violation of the 5th Amendment.
In United States v. Vangatesa government employee had signed a form indicating that she would be subject to discipline and possibly dismissal if she refused to answer questions about her work performance and the form indicated that her statements could not be used against her in a subsequent criminal proceeding. Officer Vangates was involved in an altercation with an inmate where she was accused of assaulting the inmate. As part of her job requirements, Vangates was forced to complete the form for her employer about the incident or she could have lost her job or been disciplined. When the inmate filed a civil rights case against Officer Vangates the form was admitted as evidence in the civil case because the case was "civil" in nature. Subsequently Officer Vangates was indicted and in the criminal trial the court ruled that the work form could not be used in evidence against the officer; however, the evidence from the "civil" case was admissible which included the work form the officer had filled out as part of her job duties. Officer Vangates should never have had to complete such a form, even under the assurance that the form could not be used against her in a criminal case. The government has taken both direct and indirect postures on assaulting the 5th Amendment, but in the end the result is the same."
6th Amendment (right to trial by jury, face one's accusers, assure access to counsel): "The confrontation clause contained within the 6th Amendment was designed to prevent witch hunts and assure fair impartial trials for citizens accused of crimes. In Lewis v. United States, 1996 and Duncan v. Louisiana, 1968 the court ruled that the 6th Amendment only applies to serious crimes and not petty crimes. Ignoring the constitutional language applying the 6th Amendment to "all criminal prosecutions," the court opined that the determination of whether a Sixth Amendment jury trial was applicable relied upon historical applications under common law; common law being prior court opinions and the old common law of England. More recently the courts have relied upon the nature of the penalties for a particular crime as a framework for determining the applicability of a jury trial; however, in either case the 6th Amendment language is clear and unequivocal giving the accused a right to trial by jury in all criminal cases."
8th Amendment (prevents cruel and unusual punishment & prohibits excessive bail): "By prohibiting excessive bail the Framers wanted to send a message to the government that citizens were not to be unreasonably detained or punished by setting bail so high that it was unattainable thus implementing a punishment before the accused was convicted. The Patriot Act has authorized extended detention of accused individuals without due process of law and in direct violation of the 8th Amendment."
Well I guess the 3rd, 7th, 9th & 10th amendments are relatively intact, for now.
Can't say that about the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th, 6th or 8th. Still think we are a free country?
Wil, try reading the updated news. There was NO assault rifle used. There wasn't even one found at the site. There was a Saiga shotgun in his trunk. He only used pistols. The whole rifle bit has been debunked with the actual video of police searching his vehicle. The first part was only the biased media lying about the rifle to push their anti-gun liberal agenda. They saw an oppertunity and ran with it. The later reports told the real story of how he used 4 pistols with 10 round magazines. Also the Korean shopkeepers were better of using AR-15s facing a mob of looters. The average shotgun only holds 5 rounds and normally only holds 3 unless "plug" has been removed. Some "riot" guns such as the Mossberg 835 hold more but those aren't that common. Even Tom Knapp's Custom Benelli used for the world record for hand thrown clays only holds 14 with a one-of-a-kind custom extended tube made specifically for his record attempt. If you are truly military trained as you claim, you would know this. If I were facing a mob of 20 violent looters, I wouldn't want to have to reload after only 3 shots. So, take your trolling rhetoric, shove it, and go learn some facts before mouthing off your anti-gun B.S.
Half Cherokee: they do now have the Kel Tec KSG shotgun with 2-7 round magazines so you could have 15 shells in there...
I'm not familiar with that one. Is that the "double barrel" Semi-auto I've seen in a couple of local gun shops?
Single barrel, double magazine... manual flip switch to change which magazine is selected, left vs right. Its new, I think it came out summer 2012.
I myself, have a Mossberg 500 12-gauge tactical (among other things).
Half Cherokee All American! Right on! Finally an obviously intelligent person gets it right! I love it when someone actually listens to, reads and comprehends news reports. Obviously the reports turned in before the anti gun nuts got to convince the liberal media to change them and substitute an "assault rifle (for obvious political reasons") stated that he used "handguns" The video shows the gun in the car and it is "NOT" a bushmaster as was first reported, regardless even if it was it was "LEFT IN THE CAR" and had no part in what transpired and therefore deserved no mention at all. I was living in California during the riots, no one was injured at the pawn shops that were guarded by men on the roof armed with AR'S and AK's because even rioters are not that stupid! Guess those Assault rifles with there obvious high capacity clips saved lives and property didn't they, just by being seen, didn't even have to fire a shot, even rioters lives were saved!
Thanks Amerall. You are right about being seen. I delivered pizzas in the past and had two attempted robberies. When I drew my weapon, both times, just the sight of it was enough to deter the threat. The first was with My Navy Arms 9mm. Both punks ran. The second time was my 44 revolver. He didn't hesitate running. Never had to fire a shot. All three were located and arrested. There is nothing scarier than staring down the business end of a 44. That barrel looks like a massive cave with a fire breathing, hot lead spewing dragon waiting inside.
Nature is tired of the "Naked Ape" destroying everything so it is retaliating. The other primates in the world are the foot soldiers of the movement that is just beginning. It will happen again.
Alcoa called. Your hat is ready.
I saw a documentary on what is happening on the island of Borneo. Much of the rain forest is being cut and the land is being converted to farm land to grow palm oil fruit used to make dish soap. I remember one scene especially - a mother monkey was holding her baby in her arms with an almost human look of sadness on her face as earth moving equipment drove past her over a barren landscape. The rain forest that once filled the landscape behind her and within which they once lived and depended upon for their survival was gone. It was very disturbing to look at. Now we read monkeys are attacking humans. Maybe the monkeys see their survival is threatened by humans?
Imagine if the monkeys were armed with assault rifles and high-capacity magazines. Well, we don't have to imagine.
Isn't that what we see in Chicago now?
so very, very true--just look at the stats.....
Give me a break you two libs......They live in a gun free zone.
They're mad as hell, and they're not gonna take it any more!
People have infringed upon their habitat for so long, they are no longer feared by animals. Perhaps these monkeys were just reclaiming what was theirs to begin with. I'm sorry people were injured, because those creatures are incredibly strong and quite ferocious.
Hey, how about sending a film crew there and making "Cowboys and Monkeys" movies for the Saturday afternoon matinee?
Whats the big deal?...Monkeys attack erry day in Washington DC ; they be killin' on each other alla time.
It's called rabies
Were they singing, "Take the Last Train to Clarksville"?
LOL...nice try, Actually they were singing (term used loosely here) "Home Invasion" by "Violent J":
(Begin booty shakin')
"their kickin in yur door
the wood begins to crack
its 2:30 in the mornin'
and yur under attack"

MSNBC, why is there a need for you to do a "Monkey" story every day? I'm sure you realize the responses are going to be juvenile and antagonistic. Yet, every stinking day, you span the globe for ridiculous stories about monkeys. How lazy are your bloggers? Be original, be creative - stop this nonsense!
Perhaps they can funnel all of their ideas through you, so you can decide whether or not they live up to your standards as "newsworthy". I'm sure we would all benefit greatly.
Ken, you forgot to put (sarc) after your post, NCGrammy might think you're serious.
It's sad for the people who got hurt, and I wish them well, but I can't get "The Far Side" out of my mind and all of the things that could have lead up to the attack, given that line of thinking. I guess I'm a little warped.
I really miss my daily Larson!!!
Was this Chicago again?
I always root for the animals no matter what !!!! Man (yes, MAN....not WOMAN) has ruined every animal's habitat resulting in erradic behavior of animals. They are trying to survive/forage among the ruin that is their home. On a separate note, it's NO WONDER captive animals have harmed humans in reported incidents. These creatures don't stand a chance.
They should be thankful that they don't live in Chicago or Detroit
the people who were attacked or the monkeys?
that's a knotty question....
