At least 33 dead in Mexico City skyscraper explosion

The death toll has risen to 32 in Mexico City after an explosion blasted the lower floors of a skyscraper housing the headquarters of state oil monopoly Pemex. NBCNews.com's Dara Brown reports.

The death toll from a powerful explosion in the Mexico City skyscraper complex housing the offices of state oil monopoly Pemex rose to at least 33, company and government officials said Friday.

Twenty men and 12 women were killed, the company said — while 121 were injured, 52 of whom remain in hospital.

Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto arrived at the Pemex administration complex by helicopter Thursday night to supervise rescue operations, Pemex and the news agency La Prensa reported. Hundreds of Mexican military forces were sent to the complex to "preserve security," officials told newspaper El Universal.

Rescue crews had searched most of the area damaged by the blast by Friday afternoon, said Attorney General Jesus Murillo said. But he added that survivors or more victims could still be found in the most unstable parts, which had not yet been fully checked.

Emilio Lozoya Austin, director general of Pemex, which is short for Petrõleos Mexicanos, told Reuters Friday the the company was "working with the best teams in Mexico and from overseas" to find the cause of the explosion.

He was flying home from a business trip to Asia when the blast occured. He said he extended his condolences "to all the families of Pemex workers who have lost their loved ones."

The explosion took place in the basement garage of the auxiliary building, next to the company's 52-floor tower in a busy commercial and residential area, said Eduardo Sánchez, a spokesman for the Interior Ministry.

An injured woman is transferred to a stretcher outside the headquarters of state oil giant Pemex in Mexico City on Thursday.

"They're conducting a tour of the building and the area adjacent to the blast site to verify if there are any still trapped so they can be rescued immediately," Sanchez said Thursday.

A government official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said preliminary findings suggested the blast was caused by aged boiler exploding in a building next to the tower, Reuters reported.

The plaster ceiling of the basement collapsed, a spokesman for the local emergency agency said. He described conditions in the tower as "delicate."

The main floor and the mezzanine of the auxiliary building were heavily damaged, along with windows as far as three floors up.

A man who was on the ground floor when the explosion occurred told Forum TV that the first casualties were taken to a clinic in the adjacent office tower, where several thousand people work.

"It shook the building, and then we were evacuated," he said.

Company touted safety record
News of the blast came toward the end of the business day — just a few hours after the company had sent two messages on Twitter celebrating how much it had "reduced our accident rate in recent years," announcing that its "safety indicators" exceeded international standards:

"An explosion took place in the B2 building of the administrative center," Pemex tweeted just after 4 p.m. local time (5 p.m. ET). "There are injuries and damage on the ground floor and mezzanine," it said, promising further information as it became available.

Pemex initially said the building had been evacuated because of a problem with its electricity supply. It then said there had been an explosion, but it didn't give the cause.

Television images showed people being evacuated — some on office chairs and gurneys. Emergency crews loaded people on stretchers into helicopters and airlifted them out of the area.

"The place shook, we lost power and suddenly there was debris everywhere," Cristian Obele told Milenio news network. "Colleagues were helping us out of the building."

Jose Cuellar, a mechanic who works near the complex, said he was repairing a car when an explosion rocked his entire workshop.

"We went to see and saw people coming out injured," Cuella, 45,  told El Universal. "Other people were carrying them."

Edgar Zuniga Jr. and M. Alex Johnson of NBC News, Telemundo and Reuters contributed to this report.

My kingdom for a copy editor...OMG Kari Huss go back to school and learn some basic English grammar rules. Lose the unnecessary commas and your sentence structure is enough to make a grown person cry.

It appears that perhaps some people in Mexico hate oil companies. Maybe their hatred is caused by an industry that epitomizes greed and ecological devastation.

I actually have a leg to stand on criticizing grammar and spelling on the internet, since I was a Technical Editor for quite some time.

But honestly being a Grammar Nazi on the internet gets very old. Fast. And for some reason nobody likes you when you do it.

Plus, every time you talk about it, somebody invariably picks through your post finding mistakes you made while criticizing.

But I still feel, however rude, the original poster's point is valid. I've seen basic spelling and grammar mistakes on NBC News articles before. I'm not in a position to say that there are more or fewer mistakes here than other sites, since that would require actual research. But I would think a professional news organization would filter articles through copy editors before allowing them to be published. And back in the old days you needed to run them past a Fact Checker too, but nowadays I think everybody does their own fact checking on Google.

I started on the inet with a 300 baud modem and a cradle and spelling and punctuation was frowned upon thus the birth of lol and lmfao etc and u instead of you etc. People who make fun of others spelling and puncuation usually get caught and wish they never had tried to correct others. We all get what the story is about and I thought it did real good for a breking story. When you write it for the archives then you have time to run it through the grammar checker and spell checker and sentence strcture. I made two intentional mistakes in this post and probably a few more to give you nitwits who like to critisize other something to do cause you seem to have a ver shallow life....

The written word is ultimately about communication, and grammar is simply a tool to aid that communication. If the written word ultimately provides the necessary communication, then making a scene about grammar, which in many cases is as arbitrary as our strange assignments of bad language, just proves one is not able to understand what matters.

Remember, in this age of the internet, that writers are often forced to write extremely quickly in order to provide the story before others or before the story becomes irrelevant. To expect perfection under this scenario is unreasonable. As long as what needs to be communicated gets communicated, we shouldn't be obsessive about grammar.

We can see why nothing gets done in DC with all the side bar comments. It's called a lack of focus. The content of the article matters more. The rest is just hair splitting and diverts attention away from the story. This makes me wonder how many of you really care about content. That is unless your one of those people that need to stop reading at every period or slightly rest at a comma before reading on. That would make you a slow reader.

          #1.44 - Fri Feb 1, 2013 7:55 AM EST

My point is that we in a conversation allow and edit out people that say "Ya Know" a lot. We edit for content.

I would much rather see a story that had punctuation mistakes over accurate information mistakes.

Now do we know why, or how this explosion happened?

Ms. Huus (did I spell that right?), you need to either learn or re-learn how to compose grammatically correct sentences or else you need to be fired. Along with that, the fact that you made a "snarky" comment regarding your inability to write correctly demonstrates that you are not "up to snuff" regarding being a jounalist or a writer. It's a shame that a large corporation will pay you a rather comfortable wage to execute what your are suppose to do improperly. If you have any problem with what I've said, feel free to contact me personally. Until then, I will take it that you are an inept journalist and writer. But facts don't matter, anything you can say to make Obama look bad is fair, right? I suggest you do some basic research on the border issues and the Border Patrol before making comments like that. I live six blocks from the border fence in SE Cochise County in Arizona, which is ground zero for the smuggling of drugs and people into this country! Yes, I will agree that Customs and Border Patrol have more boots on the ground than ever before. That is a fact. The problem is that they are saddled with ever increasing restrictive rules of engagement coming from Eric Holder and Janet "do nothing" Napolitano that allow them to get only a fraction of what actually comes through the border. The fact is that our southern border has more holes in it than my wife's favorite pasta strainer! I have illegals running the alleys behind my house almost every night. The only thing that keeps them out of my yard is three large dogs who don't like strangers and get very loud when approached. Many of my neighbors have not been so fortunate. For any that are interested in the true state of our Southern borders, I strongly recommend a book called "The Reaper's Line: Life and Death on the Mexican Border". It is an eye opener and was written by a man named Lee Morgan who was a Border Patrol and ICE Special Agent in Southern Arizona for over 20 years.

No, Eric Holder won't keep them armed. Your AZ Attorney General gun-nut will be just fine handing over confiscated weapons to the cartels, though. Why don't you read up on what really happened in "Fast and Furious?" Or do big words scare you?

                cutmeloose -

Yeah, they make too much money because idiots like you and yours won't even think of legalization as a viable solution to the drug problem. The DEA makes so much money off our taxes, then again off of "seizures and forfeitures" done illegaly that they don't ever have to give back. The cartels make way more money than they ever could if this stuff was legal. Our @!$%#ing "liberal" president wouldn't even discuss the notion at the meeting of the Americas.

So let's look at my comment that you are referring to. It was in reply to somebody who said that Obama doesn't want to spend money on the border. I replied that he has spent more money than any president and we now have more personnel on the border than ever before, and that's it. You tell me to do some basic research, and then immediately after say that what I said in my comment was indeed a fact. If the person I was responding to would have posted "the borders are 100% sealed and safe" I would have brought up the same issues you did, but that was neither the topic nor a relevant response. So please tell me where I need to do research and get my facts straight, what incorrect statement did I make? Did I say the borders are safe or did I just correct an ignorant individual who stated Obama doesn't want to spend money on the border? And since you are making suggestions for me, my suggestion for you is reading comprehension courses.

Much of the commentary today is irrelavent to the the article. Did anyone read,

....the blast was caused by aged boiler exploding....?

I heard that it was probably a boiler explosion, which is quite possible. they rarely happen in the US anymore, but can be very powerful in a large, poorly maintained boiler.

The old, flame-tube boilers are especially susceptible to this, IIRC. Those things have only 2 settings: on and off. No flame control, generally only good for one flow rate, and (if they're old enough) you can't ever shut them down or the metal contraction will cause the thing to leak like a sieve.

I guess for a skyscraper they may have to use steam. I suppose it depends on how much they want to pump it. A lot of large-area campuses and buildings (footprint x number of stories = huge) use steam so they can have central heating and then either use steam directly (control nightmare) or use a hot water heat exchanger (really inefficient) to get the heat around. Much more efficient to create localized hot water heaters (yes, we still call them boilers) that serve several floors, and use a point-of-use methodology with variable flow.

Either that, or this was a big old domestic hot water heater. In which case, localization is still a @!$%#load more efficient. But, then, this building was probably built before the 1990s. Building designs are fads in and of themselves.

I wonder what attitude is that? Pointing out to someone they spelled someone's name wrong, more like justified.

I found not one spelling error in the article and found it an easy, factual read.

Funny how our brains ignore misspellings like that and we assume the correct word from the context. Sort of like the ability to read words that have the letters jumbled as long as the first and last letter are correct.

@super x, I am a white mostly Irish guy from Michigan. I lived and worked in "The City of Mexico", as you call it, for three years from 2008 to 2011. I moved freely all around the city on foot, bike, car, train, subway, bus, and taxi. I NEVER felt unsafe in ANY place I went in three years. I was alone much of the time and my Spanish is awful. I honestly can't say the same about most large U.S. cities that I have been too. Who'da thunk it? Mexico City is wonderful.

I live 35 miles south of Mexico City. While I prefer to avoid it like all big cities (mainly because of the traffic), my friends who live there love it. It's considered the safest large city in Mexico.

Our neighbors just bought a weekend place there because it has so much going on!

Journalism is dead- but news lives on.

If classical mastery of form and structure are largely lacking, the news still gets out.

People like me may take the time to try to write well- but we aren't being paid by the word.

Bottom line: give me the information.

I can think for myself; if you no longer have the time to feed it to us with the polished accomplishment common in the day when writers were rewarded for the skillful presentation of difficult ideas, just convey as much raw information as possible- we'll get along swimmingly.

The cardinal sin is omissions intended to lead dullards to some inevitable conclusion.

Avoid that, and I'm fine with a few errors.

Praying for the Families. We will all die one day. When we close our eyes in this world, we wake up in the next. Then its Heaven or Hell. God sent His son Jesus to die for our sins so we don't have to go to Hell. All you have to do is accept Jesus as your saviour and repent of your sins. This is the truth. You will leave this earth. When you open your eyes again in the next world, your opinions will not matter, only Truth.

                                  Good Luck!

No, no, no, no, no... Paul, really: we did that one already, remember? Saddam Hussein was the bad guy "WANTED" back then. Now it's Venezuela we're after, Paul. You have to keep up: this time, we could blame that guy Hugo and go after him (besides, there's oil there as well).

Old Dick Che must be having some wet dreams right now...

Drug cartel violence is only one possibility.

                                          Why the auxiliary building?

                                          Why not the main structure?

That would surely have caused more damage and more casualties....

There are certainly a lot of unanswered questions, but two possibilities present themselves immediately: the auxiliary structure had poor security, or there was a specific target who worked in that building- and someone believed the collateral damage was acceptable to achieve their assassination.
