A wounded person is carried by soldiers at the site of a suicide bomb attack in Kirkuk, Iraq, on Feb. 3, 2013.
KIRKUK, Iraq - A suicide bomber driving a car and gunmen disguised in police uniforms killed at least 33 people in the Iraqi city Kirkuk on Sunday when they tried to storm the police headquarters.
It was the third major attack in several weeks in or near the northern city, an ethnically mixed area of Arabs, Kurds and Turkmen at the heart of a dispute over oil and land between Baghdad's central government and the autonomous Kurdistan region.
"A suicide bomber driving a car packed with explosives hit the entrance of the headquarters and after the blast gunmen in explosive vests attacked with AK-47s and grenades, but the guards killed them," a police official said.
The huge car bomb blast tore into the police directorate's concrete facade, destroyed cars outside and left bodies under rubble at nearby government offices. Police said there were at least two gunmen.
Several armed groups are active in Kirkuk, and Sunni Islamist insurgents tied to al-Qaida often attack security forces in an attempt to undermine Shiite Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki's government and stoke sectarian tensions.
Last month a suicide bomber disguised as a mourner killed at least 26 at a funeral at a Shiite mosque in the nearby city of Tuz Khurmato, and days earlier a suicide bomber driving a truck killed 25 in an attack on a political party headquarters in Kirkuk, 105 miles north of the capital Baghdad.

I've been there; we are long overdue to vacate compeltely; the remaining US civilians there are simply draining off our tax dollars. They serve no purpose.
Those people are completely ignorant and barbaric...
Haters.
What it must do to a child's mental and emotional state of mind, growing up in such a violent society. (And, yes, same could be said about parts of Chicago and New York City, and every other large metro in the world.) But, in the U.S. and other areas of the world, there are other places that a person can go, to feel safe and at rest. I do feel for the children and the innocents, when these attacks happen. So unneeded......so unnecessary.
It takes a ruthless dictator like Hussein to keep these ragheads inline. Now that the US unraveled Iraq, at the cost of american soldier's lives and billions of taxpayer money, these ragheads will continue to kill each other as they have for centuries. The US government is good at fukin up other countries while our country here at home unravels with government corruption, high unemployment, 49 million on food stamps, high food prices, taxes rising, etc.
And the freedom you are granted to post your racist rhetoric......If you lived in Iraq in 1990 and posted what you just did here - that ruthless dictator would have killed you, of course after having you watch his sons and minions rape and torture your wife and daughter for a couple of days.
How about supporting our government and way of life and find a way to help improve the situation instead of calling people of other heritage and background names?
Mabey we should get some libs over there and start a gun control campaign.
What many don't realize or understand about this region of the world is that for hundreds of years these people have never understood what peace is about. All they seem to know is war and fighting and killing. And if someone says it's not about religion they best take a look again. It's always Sunni versus @!$%#es or some other offshoot of these religions.
Until those in the Arab world wake up to the fact that to coexist one has to put aside their religios differences to live in peace. Will this happen seems to be the big question but as has been done before seems to be what is happening now. Peace still eludes them as it will in the future becaus they live as many did a hundred years ago. Change is what they need but as long as there are those out there that don't agree but think it's their way or no way this region will always be in turmol. Best for all the civilized countries to just get out of there and let them continue killing themselves as they just don't get it.
You know what. . . . . unless it was ANY of our American soldiers being killed( which thank God it was not), I DON'T CARE !!! Iraq has not, will not, and has no intentions to change the barbarity of their society. We need to get ALL, EVERY ONE OF OUR BOYS home!!! Let the Iraqi's, Afgani's, etc., all kill each other over there. We will not change the way they have lived for centuries.
Muslims killing Muslims. Leave them be.
And don't forget the most IMPORTANT point...this is a fueled by mindless religion....world history is one religious war after another...ain't religion great???....NOT!
More proof that John Mcain's wonderful "surge" worked so well. We're just pretending that we won in Iraq.
Mission NEVER Accomplished. 5,000 soldiers dead to prop-up a dysfunctional new ally of Iran.
it will never stop...sad but true
Appears to be a problem with any degree of stabilization and democracy in that mideastern cesspool more than nine years after the US invasion. This will never change, as all G.Bush did was to sacrifice hundreds of US lives for absolutely nothing, while totally wasting billions of $.
MISSION ACCOMPLISHED ! Filling the coffers of Dick Cheney and Halliburton and soooooooo many other Pentagon contractors !
Yeah getting rid of Saddam Hussien really did some good didn't it? Those people need an Iron boot on their neck like Saddam Hussien used to do. He knew how to control those people, in fact he kept that whole area under control. Our government really screwed things up in those Muslim countries. What that whole area needs is another Saddam Hussien. What a waste of our soldiers lives. Weapons of mass destruction my Ass. All the 911 terrorists came from Saudia Arabia but Bush attacks Iraq. I guess he didn't want to attack his oil buddies.
And the good ol' USA eliminated a dictator, placed its military on the ground, and spent how long there? I'm glad to see that this effort was not in vain! What a fuggin' joke.
It's ironic: Most of the Muslim haters here are the same people who cheered on the war in Iraq. Don't get me wrong, I have no love for the Muslims, but it's time to admit how tragically WRONG you idiots were.
Feeling stupid yet?
America has turned its back against these tough/strongmen leaders, one by one over the years who kept these madmen/terrorist in check. Now does the USA become the worlds policeman? !!!
Lived in Turkey for 15 years in the 70s and 80s and developed a great love for the people in this part of the world...I was extremely disappointed that a seperate Kurdish state wasnt created in Northern Iraq, it could have been, along with some real dialogue, the beginning of the end of the war between Turkey and the PKK...but the allied powers (Bush Cheney and Rumsfeld) in their stupidity decided the single largest ethnic group without their own country in the world could continue getting screwed...is Iraq better off now that Saddam and his butcherous thugs no longer run the place? well, it damn sure is for the oil companies huh? and the people of Iraq no longer have crippling sanctions in place depriving them of medicine (google "WE think the price was worth it"/madeleine Allbright" but things are spiraling out of control there and the US pansying out and Allowing Al Sadr to live was a mistake the people of Iraq will be paying for for a long time
When will the CARNAGE end?. It makes no sense for these people to go on a killing spree eliminating each other . Tired of the insanity
Can Muslim's ever work together to try and rebuild their country? Instead of reconstruction they wallow in destruction. They are the lost cause of the world. They want respect, they will receive nothing. They are the pariah's of the world.
When you fight people that live to fight, the only way to win is annihilation...if you're not prepared to go that far stay at home...
Time our American Media shut the door on reports of Iraq. Seems we have enough killing reports in America today. Until we learn how to police our own, we're never be good on policing the world.
