Biden: 'Still time' for direct US-Iran talks

MUNICH - The United States is ready for direct talks with Iran if it is serious about negotiations, Vice President Joe Biden said late Saturday, backing bilateral contact many see as crucial to easing a dispute over Tehran's nuclear program.

Speaking at a security conference in Munich, Biden said Iran - which says it is enriching uranium for peaceful energy only - now faced "the most robust sanctions in history" meant to ensure it does not develop nuclear weapons.

"But we have also made clear that Iran's leaders need not sentence their people to economic deprivation and international isolation," Biden said. "There is still time, there is still space for diplomacy backed by pressure to succeed. The ball is in the government of Iran's court."

To date, fitful talks on Iran's nuclear program have been between Tehran and the EU's top diplomat representing six world powers including Washington. But analysts have suggested that with his re-election behind him, President Barack Obama might have more leeway to take on direct negotiations with Iran.

That makes the year ahead critical for chances of overcoming a stand-off which, if left to fester further, could see Iran approach nuclear weapons capability, possibly provoking military action by Israel that could inflame the Middle East.

Progress on Iran would also help ease regional tensions as the United States prepares to pull most combat troops out of Iran's neighbor Afghanistan by the end of 2014.

Asked whether Washington might consider direct talks with Iran to smooth the process, Biden said, "When the Iranian leadership, Supreme Leader (Ayatollah Ali Khamenei), is serious.

"We have made it clear at the outset that we would be prepared to meet bilaterally with the Iranian leadership, we would not make it a secret that we were doing that, we would let our partners know if that occasion presented itself.

"That offer stands, but it must be real and tangible and there has to be an agenda that they are prepared to speak to. We are not just prepared to do it for the exercise."

Negotiations with Iran have so far been overseen by European Union foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton on behalf of France, Britain, Germany, China, Russia and the United States. But they have made scant headway, raising fears Iran is simply playing for time while it develops nuclear know-how.

Many believe no deal is possible without a U.S.-Iranian thaw, requiring direct talks addressing myriad sources of mutual mistrust and hostility lingering since Iran's 1979 Islamic Revolution and the hostage crisis at the U.S. embassy in Tehran.

Iran has avoided direct, public talks with the United States, though some suggest Tehran would eventually welcome an opportunity to end its international isolation.

Speaking at a news conference in Munich, Republican Senator John McCain said he would have no objection to direct talks but questioned how much these would achieve if fundamental questions over Iran's nuclear program remained unresolved.

"I don't know when we will have direct talks between the United States and Iran. That is a subject for the president of the United States. I don't think anyone here objects to that," he said. But he added, "to have grounds for optimism, I think, would be a mistake."

Israel, which describes the prospect of Iran being able to weaponize enriched uranium as an existential threat, has made clear it would be ready to bomb the nuclear sites of its arch-enemy to prevent that outcome. The United States has also said it would not rule out the use of military force.

Neville Chamberlain is alive and well. My nitemare is that Biden is sitting down smiling for photo-ops with the mullahs while nukes are exploding in our allies' back yards and incinerating their people. The Obama administration obviously doesn't care if the Islamic dictatorship in Iran gets nuclear weapons.

The democratic party loses votes in the droves, with every pathetic attempt to look like they have any sort of rule. The party of moms and grandmas is loaded full of empty threats and idiotic policies. Finally ran into a problem they have to do more than fly a remote control bomber over. Im suprised were going back to afghanistan at all, guess they couldnt talk their way out of that one. America is a cowering little girl with these people in charge. The end result will be alot of talk no action. If you think Iran will ever cave into being peaceful with anyone you havent read up much on iran.

WHO IS THE THREAT TO WORLD PEACE? CHRISTIANS, JEWS, OR
MUSLIMS!

Since the 1979 Iranian revolution and the downfall of
the US Puppet Ruler the Shah, Iran has been an Islamic state. In that interval
of time, 1979 to the present, Iran has not invaded anyone. Not once. People of
all religions live in peace in Iran, even Jews, who find life so comfortable in
Iran they refused an offer by the government of Israel to emigrate!

In the same period of time, Israel, a self-declared Jewish state, attacked
Iraq in 1981, bombing the power station at Osirik, claiming it was a clandestine
weapons factory. Subsequent examination of the ruins following the 2003 invasion
proved Israel had lied. In 1982, Israel invaded Lebanon. This led to the
Massacres at Sabra and Shatilla. In February 2003 Israel staged incursions into
Gaza and Nablus. In September 2007 Israel bombed Syria, again insisting they
were destroying a clandestine weapons laboratory. Again there was no evidence to
support Israel's claims. In 2006, Israel attacked Lebanon, killing 1200, mostly
civilians, several UN observers, and littering the landscape with land mines on
their way out. In February 2008 Israel again raided Gaza, killing over 100.
HAMAS agreed to a cease fire and kept it for 6 months until November 4, when
Israel again attacked without warning, killing 6 HAMAS members, and launching
operation CAST LEAD. 1300 Gazans, mostly civilians, were killed. Israel lost 13
soldiers. Violations of international law included the use of White Phosphorus
incendiary bombs against civilians and non-military targets. The United Nations
investigated, but Israel refused to cooperate. In May 2010, Israel attacked an
international aid flotilla bringing food and medical supplies to Gaza in
international waters. 9 people were murdered including an American from New
York.

In the same period of time, the United States, officially a secular nation
but predominantly Christian, attacked El Salvador (1980), Libya (1981), Sinai
(1982), Lebanon (1982 1983), Egypt (1983), Grenada (1983), Honduras (1983), Chad
(1983), Persian Gulf (1984), Libya (1986) , Bolivia (1986), Iran (1987), Persian

(1989), Panama (1989), Colombia, Bolivia, and Peru (1989), Philippines (1989),
Panama (1989-1990), Liberia (1990), Saudi Arabia (1990), Iraq (1991), Zaire
(1991), Sierra Leone (1992), Somalia (1992), Bosnia-Herzegovina (1993 to
present), Macedonia (1993), Haiti (1994), Macedonia (1994), Bosnia (1995),
Liberia (1996), Central African Republic (1996), Albania (1997), Congo/Gabon
(1997), Sierra Leon (1997), Cambodia (1997), Iraq (1998), Guinea/Bissau (1998),
Kenya/Tanzania (1998 to 1999), Afghanistan/Sudan (1998), Liberia (1998), East
Timor (1999), Serbia (1999), Sierra Leon (2000), Yemen (2000), East Timor
(2000), Afghanistan (2001 to present), Yemen (2002), Philippines (2002) , Cote
d'Ivoire (2002), Iraq (2003 to present), Liberia (2003), Georgia/Djibouti
(2003), Haiti (2004), Georgia/Djibouti/Kenya/Ethiopia/Yemen/Eritrea War on
Terror (2004), Pakistan drone attacks (2004 to present), Somalia (2007), South
Ossetia/Georgia (2008), Syria (2008), Yemen (2009), Haiti (2010), etc. etc. etc.
etc.

So, who is the danger to world peace?

I bet Iran would say... "if Israel shows me theirs I'll show you mine". Iran only wants what Israel has...why so one sided? You take land from the Palestinians and force more land out of them and displace even more people for what the tenth time?? They have a lot of nukes, WMD,s Chemical Weapons, Iran just want to level the playing field. US is full of Jews in the our Government so getting bullied by the US and Israel is the same thing it? Why is Russia and CHina siding with Iran they see what Israel has done is doing and what they will be doing in the future!

Every other country has to play by the rules BUT Israel...hypocritical.

Nice job reporting on the US and Israeli response to continued belligerence in the world. Every single action was a reaction to aggression and terrorism focused on killing civilians or in some cases attacking individual military members. What you failed to report on was the actual terrorist acts. And imagine if the US or Israel did not respond the way you detailed. In Israel, they would now be an Islamic state, the 34th one, as opposed to no Jewish states. In the US had we not responded, at the very least our allies would be under dictatorship or Sharia law. At the worst, you would be in prison for being American. Or would you?

And if you oppose every action your country has taken to promote freedom and stop terrorism and belligerence, you are living in the wrong country. It is not political as both parties were in power during all of those actions and both parties had power over the House and Senate. Republican or Democrat, this nation has always and will always be on the cutting edge of promoting freedom worldwide. That will entail sacrifice. Those that chose to enlist will be on the front.

@ Brian: Nice try with that stats where the US has invaded everybody including Mars and Scotland, while innocent little Iran has done nothing. Have you ever read a newspaper or history book in your drug-addled life. Iran invaded Iraq within months of the Ayatollah securing his grip on the Iranian government. Iran has funded and directly supported proxy terrorist movements since then as well. Who do you think has propped up Hezbollah and Syria over the past ten years? Do your homework, THEN babble. I think you need to emigrate to Iran, since you dislike the US so much.

Since they did not exist, Saddam could have saved himself from the hangman and the US from a war by only letting international inspectors in to look. He had used them in the past. I was only pointing out that yes we did talk with Iraq about WMD's.

Which Biden is speaking here? The one that is the President's mouthpiece, or the man who had a real handle on foreign policy once upon a time. Unfortunately, I believeit is the former.

With sanctions that have so many loopholes, eg, Turkey can get all the oil it wants, among many other lopholes, sanctions will not work. Only a 100% sanction might have worked, but the President does not really have the ability to be prescient and understand what will happen by his failure to act. Yes, no one wants a conflict, but if you talks with Iran mean nothing, and the sanctions are full of holes, the only option the President left us is the least desirable. Correction: Iran having nuclear weapons is the least desirable.

Iran vs Israel: What The Media Wants You To Forget

The corporate media have been given their orders to throw the focus back on
            to Iran.

Here is a recap of what they are trying to make you forget.

            1. In 2009, Rose Gottemoeller, an assistant secretary of state and
Washington's chief nuclear arms negotiator, asked Israel to sign the Nuclear
            Non-Proliferation Treaty. Israel refused.

            2. In 2009. the United Nations passed a resolution calling on Israel
to sign the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and to submit to inspections.
The UN General Assembly passed a similar resolution in 2012 calling for
            inspections. Israel refused.

            3. The IAEA asked Israel to sign the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty
and to submit to inspections. Israel refused.

            4. Iran's formal notification to the IAEA of the planned construction
of the backup fuel-rod facility underscores that Iran is playing by the rules of
the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty which Iran has signed.

            5. Iran allows IAEA inspections of all its facilities.

            6. Contrary to face-saving claims, it appears that the US and Israel were
both caught off guard by Iran's announcement of a planned underground (to avoid
being bombed) enrichment facility. The reasoning is simple. Had the US or Israel
announced the existence of he new facility before Iran's notified the IAEA, it
would have put Iran on the defensive. As it is now, the US and Israel seem to be
playing catch up, casting doubt on the veracity of Israel's claims to "know"
that Iran is a nuclear threat.

            7. The IAEA and all 16 United States Intelligence Agencies are unanimous in
agreement that Iran is not building and does not possess nuclear weapons.

            8. In 1986, Mordachai Vanunu blew the whistle and provided
photographs showing Israel's clandestine nuclear weapons factory underneath the
            reactor at Dimona.

            9. Israel made the same accusations against Iraq that it is making against
Iran, leading up to Israel's bombing of the power station at Osirik. Following
the invasion of 2003, international experts examined the ruins of the power station at
Osirik and found no evidence of a clandestine weapons factory in the
            rubble.

            10. The United Nations has just released the Goldstone Report, a scathing
report which accuses Israel of 37 specific war crimes and crimes against
humanity in Gaza earlier this year. Israel has denounced the report as
"Anti-Semitic (even though Judge Goldstone is himself Jewish), and the United
States will block the report from being referred to the War Crimes Tribunal at
the Hague, thereby making the US Government an accessory after-the-fact.

            11. Recently revealed documents prove not only that Israel has nuclear
weapos, but actually tried to sell some to Apartheid South Africa. Who else
Israel approached to sell nuclear weapons remains an unasked question.

            12. In 1965, Israel stole over 200-600 pounds of weapons-grade uranium from the
            United States.

            13. Declassified documents from the former South African regime prove not
only that Israel has had nuclear weapons for decades, but has tried to sell
            them to other countries!

14: No less a source than the Jerusalem Post confirms that Israel has armed their
German-supplied Dolphin submarines with nuclear-tipped cruise missiles.

We all need to be Joe Wilson right now. We need to stand up and scream,
"LIAR!" at every politician and every talking media moron that is pushing this
war in Iran. And we need to keep dong it until they get the message that we will
            not be deceived any more.

Israel wants to send your kids off to die in Iran, and YOU are the only one
            that can stop them.

Sunshiney and IXLR8: ask yourselves a pair of simple questions. What are Iran's real motives. What are Israel's real motives? Israel-bashing is SO in vogue among you leftists in the US. How many different governments and religious leaders, ALL MUSLIM, have declared support for the destruction of the state of Israel? So the Jews live in just about the toughest neighborhood in the world, even worse than King Barry's neighborhood in south Chicago, and if I were outnumbered 100:1 by Muslim fundamentalists who have sworn to destroy me, I'd build me about 125 nuclear warheads as well. If you think Iran's motives are as pure as the driven snow, then I am forced to question either your motives or your intelligence.

I don't know about the media, but I sure don't want to forget that Israel did not sign the treaty, because it proved to be the right decision.

They knew that the treaty will be enforced on them only, while Islamic neighbors will break the treaty and the Muslim-dominated UN will look the other way.

Well, now Iran is breaking the treaty, and UN does nothing. Israel's expectations confirmed.

The fact that they did not sign the treaty is saving them now.

We dont need a third war to pay for- which would tick off the Russians and Chinese who take Iran's oil- Israel can take care of themselves

The "Chosen Ones" were not chosen because of their upstanding nature, and the voice that they heard in the desert is the same voice that tempted Christ..."bow down and worship me, and all of the nations around you and their splendor I will give to you". Jesus came not for the righteous, but to bring sinners to repentance....first to the Jew, and then the Gentile.

A Jew is someone who is "In the world and of it", instead of "in the world and not of it". And that includes anyone from any "nation".

                      That's a new one.

First they were telling us that Jews are practicing a wrong religion and therefore should be converted or slaughtered.

Then they were telling us that Jews are of the wrong genetic makeup, and therefore should just be slaughtered.

Then they were telling us that Jews live in the wrong places, and therefore should be relocated or slaughtered.

So, now it's Jews are not really Jews, therefore our country should be taken away and we should be relocated back to the countries we were relocated from in the previous round, or we should all be slaughtered.

Wonderful. What will they think of next?

The current Iranian government will never give up it's desire to procure nuclear weapons. The mullahs would love to send representatives either from their own government or a third party to sit down with smilin' Joe. Anything to stall the West's ability to prevent them from getting the bomb. Biden is an idiot, and Barry is no brighter. Look's like Israel will be handling this on their own, and why not...they are much more capable then we are at this point.

This is fun! Roy: here's how I see it playing out.

                          Iran stalls

                          The US babbles

Israel, restrained by the US, does nothing

Iran successfully builds a nuclear weapon

Iran's highly trained space monkey detonates that nuclear weapon over Tel Aviv

Iran's ten largest cities and 32% of its population settle over the south/central Pacific Ocean as radioactive dust

and remember, it's all Sarah Palin's fault, who can now see Tehran from her back yard

Talk with Iran will do absolutely no good, because they will agree to the talks, schedule them, decide on the menu, decide on the dress code, pick a location, decide whether to allow the news, mail invitations, change the guest list and mail the invitations again, then, after having several months of stalling (and progress on their weapons) cancel the event.

It's never too late to apologize to Iran, to right all the wrongs America has committed...

Then, we can go, hat in hand, to North Korea and beg forgiveness for the century of American misdeeds...

Then we, as a nation, can surrender to Mexico, and to be taken and properly chastized. With open borders, America will then be 'all it can be'...

Go gettum', Mr. President. Do what you do best. Make excuses.

Iran has been behind the deaths of thousands of American service personnel fighting in the middle east and we are going to give them a pass to the big negotiating table? This is where they can pull the string of Kerry and any other nit wit lackey we send to negotiate with them and all the while, building a nuclear weapon to attack Israel with? Thats how it works now? We have voted ourselves to be the most spineless nation on the face of the planet? I for one am ashamed of who we are becoming.

Robert - Iran has not been behind the deaths of Americans. You read or listen to too much Zionist propaganda. Iran has not started a war with another country in almost 200 years, which shows they are a peaceful country, unlike Israel who attacks other countries every time it feels they are getting too strong.

Iran has no reason to attack Israel, because Israel is nothing but a s--t hole with no resources, other than blind support from America.

Iran has lots of oil and gas, which is the real reason they are targeted. They cannot be attacked unless our government and Israel convince Americans there is a threat, just like they did with Iraq. As with Iraq, Iran is no threat either. Their nuclear enrichment is monitored, which effectively stops any prospect of a nuclear weapon. It is all propaganda, eminating from the Zionist media.

No more wars for Israel or for oil. Israel is a parasite on the American taxpayer.

Iran has been behind death of thousands of Americans, not just because of their IED's, but also Khobar tower bombing, USS Stark bombing, killing of our Marines in Beirut and offering $1000 for each dead American soldier. Not to mention blood on their filthy hands for Hamas and hezbolah crimes and massacre od palestinians in Gaza before they were forced out.

Ralph is a propaganda representative of the theocratic dictatorship of the ayatolahs who want to develop nukes and reach Europe, Israel, and sneal their dirty bombs into US through venezuela and mexico. Iranian murderers already have established bases by hezbolah forces in South America.

You Zionists list many charges, but cannot prove any, because the charges are fabrications, made up by the Zionist machine. Those shaped IEDs could come from anywhere. Do you morons think the Iranians would stamp "Made in Iran" on them, if they indeed manufacured them?

All you clowns do is make charges and act as if they were gospel. You are the same idiots who said Iraq had WMD and a nuclear weapons program, using the forged Niger documents as proof. The documents were forged, proving you Zionists will do anything to convince America to go to war.

The entire arguement for the Iraq war was built on the same type of bs you Zionist fools are putting out there today. No more wars for Israel. Robert, if you think for one minute those 2 clowns could rip me a new one, you are as big a fool as them.

Whole weapon shipments have been seized coming from Iran and going to American military hotspots all over the middle east. Money has been halted and or frozen in accounts that was to pay for the deaths of American service personnel. Iran is an evil entity of death and will not be satisfied until a "toe tag" is tied on the toe of christian democracy. This isn't denial you are suffering from or spewing on about, you are truly a terrorist supporting lackey and Iran wishes they had 100 million just like you. Now, I can tell you are a little upset about the fact that you have been drawn out in to the light and exposed for what you really are, (Islamofacistnazi) but you dug your hole, now lie in it. Whats your next move Ralph, strap dynamite to your chest for your 72 virgins? Well, I hope they are all men as you do too I'm sure.

Talking - coo coo Not The not is explained herein

The same theme again . Talk Talk mean nothing except renege on Israel .

                                          Betraying Israel .

The Government of Iran has declared war on Israel for now 10 plus years

The Government of Iran has promised to destroy Israel recently . We have to assume to nuclear weapons . It has recently been reported that Iran is in neg with Russia for defensive muscles to shoot down nuclear weapons Israel has . The Government of Iran believes that Israel made up the holocaust to get the west on their side . So they say and so they maintain. The fact is the so called blockage or refusal to buy Iran oil has not worked as the US in typical B.S . fashion has allowed about 20 countries to be exempt from the oil purchasing . In effect , the longer this ban goes on , the lower the effect of the ban with Obama making exemptions for political reasons . To wit Obama has made his own ban a joke . The people of Iran are told Israel , not Obama or the USA is enforcing the Ban . Also , any unilateral talks with Iran by anyone certainly is going to be used against Israel as if Iran is going to stop its speedy development toward nukes which is its only intention .

The only thing Biden can tell the Iranian War Makers that makes sense is that the US now has the capacity with new drilling techniques to develop all the oil it needs for domestic nations , and can be an exporter of natural gas and coal . The message then is as Obama stated it that the USA now has a stated position against Israel . This position was stated by Obama as indicating that they would not ever vote( in the UN) for a preemptive strike against Iran by Israel even though this is exactly what Iran states it intends to do . The Obama words like the PM of Israel is a " pain in the ass" is well know through-tout the world .

Obama and the USA should be on a path such that they will be or could be in a few years a part of OPEC .

The fact is Israel has import oil . The realization of this could be sent to Iran so that Israel could become a customer of oil countries closest to it . As to the USA is in need of our agriculture. Egypt is sent huge amounts of our agriculture . As the situation with our oil has changed , these uni lateral talks will most likely mean a betrayal of Israel . The only reason why the USA would be on the side of Israel now is so that we can export to the middle east our agriculture . The destruction of fertile land will only be a negative to the area . The destruction of Israel as a country will mean nothing to the USA except the threat of more destruction of the area and Middle East bring the whole world to war , not against Israel , but against each other for land purposes . This is a war that the world can not afford to have . Wars to gain other people land are no longer advisable and would be reckless for the entire world if they involve nuclear weapons as they would destroy the earth and bring on a climate change immediately that would be deadly . The fact that Iran has total disrespect towards UN inspections and is building nuclear weapons know by the UN to be true and lied to be Iran makes this dangerous for the world , not just Israel . What this is about is a sanity test which the leadership of Iran has already failed . They , Iran , leaders , believe the rest of the M.E. will fail down at their feet if they use nuclear weapons on Israel . In fact the Saudis and Kuwait would do just that if the US was not in back of them , and so would most of the Arab States which are much smaller than SA or Ku. Since China still needs oil it would be sould by Iran to China and not by the Saudis . Nationalism which is based on scapegoatism is an old game ,which the Kings of Iran have played in Ancient times when war did not mean the possible end of the world. Isreal in fact can not be total effective in a preemptive attack which depends on the US to be effective due to the distance from Isreal and the flight realities of the current air force of Israel .

Israel is the size of NJ . 60% of it is desert which makes it very small as to land to be populated . Iran has a populataion of 60 million plus . Isreal Jews number 6 million and other 1 million in population . So making a war statement against such as small country would seem OK to the Iran military mind . It is a minor loss to the area , and if they hit the population centers which is small in area , they will destroy the country while maintaining most of the land . By this account , the USA under Obama , has showed intent to betray Israel .

The facts show why this is most likely a betrayal of Israel than anything else .

Chuck - You are lieing. The government of Iran has long said it will notattack unless they are attacked first. They have not decared war on Israel.

All 16 US intelligence agencies have concluded Iran does not have a nuclear weaponsd program.

Where do you get the gaul to say we have to assume they have nuclear weapons? Then you condemn Iran for wanting a missile that would shoot down Israeli planes attempting to nuke them. Wow, those terrible Iranians! Imagine, not wanting to be nuked!

Your entire post is a load of bs. Here read this about who decared who an enemy.

                                          1992: Israeli
parliamentarian Benjamin Netanyahu tells his colleagues that Iran is 3 to 5
years from being able to produce a nuclear weapon – and that the threat
had to be "uprooted by an international front headed by the US."

                                          1992:
Israeli Foreign Minister Shimon Peres tells French TV that Iran was set to have
nuclear warheads by 1999. "Iran is the greatest threat and greatest
problem in the Middle East," Peres warned, "because it seeks the
nuclear option while holding a highly dangerous stance of extreme religious
                                          militancy."

                                          1992:
Joseph Alpher, a former official of Israel's Mossad spy agency, says "Iran
has to be identified as Enemy No. 1." Iran's nascent nuclear program, he
told The New York Times, "really gives Israel the jitters."

Here it is 21 years later and Iran still does not have a nuclear weapon, which proves the leaders of Israel are ill informed, just plan stupid or are war mongering in an attempt to involve the US in a war against Iran.
