Knife-wielding man stunned by police outside Buckingham Palace

Police use a stun gun on a man who puts a knife to his throat after trying to enter the gates at London's Buckingham Palace . NBCNews.com's Dara Brown reports.

A man holding a knife to his neck was immobilized with a stun gun by police outside London’s Buckingham Palace during Sunday’s Changing of the Guard ceremony.

Smartphone video of the incident, published on news sites including the Daily Telegraph, showed the man being brought to the ground by the police weapon.

He was immediately arrested and is in custody, according to a Metropolitan Police spokesman, although it is not yet clear if he will be charged with any offense.

The incident happened at 11:55 a.m. local time (6:55 a.m. ET) on the street outside the palace gates in the west end of central London.

It was witnessed by hundreds of tourists who had gathered to see the 45-minute Changing of the Guard ceremony.

The queen and her husband, Prince Philip, were at their rural home in Sandringham, Norfolk, at the time.

Buckingham Palace said it would not comment, according to ITV News.

No need. They usually don't result in death, as in this case (nobody got hurt). If he had a gun, people would be dead by now.

The man may not be alive had he be holding a gun. A stun-gun beats knife. No lives lost.

Guy had a progressive idea, I like it. "If I feel like killing someone, I will simply threaten to kill myself." But this definitely has NOTHING to do with mental health...

In 2007-2008, the UK had 277 deaths from stabbings.

So much for that baloney that knives don't KILL

These incidents prove one thing for sure. There will be violence wether people have guns or not.Obviously banning anything that can be used as a weapon is not feasble. The root of the violence problem is not the weapon but, the person using it.

AKRandy, look what I found on Internet:

In the US - population 311.5 million - there were an estimated 13,756 in 2009, a rate about 5.0 per 100,000. Of these 9,203 were carried out with a firearm.

In the UK - population 56.1 - there were an estimated 550 murders in 2011, a rate of about 1.4 per 100,000. Of these 39 were carried out with a firearm.

To sum up, more then 60% of murders in the US were carried with a firearm, while in Britain less then 10%.

      Obviously gun control works.

By the way, nobody says that you can't commit murder with a knife. But it would be a way, way harder, I would say impossible, for somebody to kill 28, or 58 people in a school, or theater. Not to mention the fact that using a knife is way more up close and personal...

Actually, I've been told by people from NYC & NJ , that a folding knife with a 3 inch blade or over , in your pocket, is a concealed weapon, and illegal. Different states have different rules.

There have been cases of knife wielding nut cases killing multiple people:

In London, a knife-wielding nutcase is brought down by a stun gun.

In this country, no self-respecting nutcase would be caught dead with anything less than assault weapons, semiautomatic pistols, high-capacity clips, hundreds of rounds of ammunition, and body armor.

Knife wielding man taken down with a stun gun. Isnt that just a stunning realization....

I doubt this would be the situation, if the man had an AR15 with a bunch of 30 round mags taped together in bundles of two or four. Wearing a bullet proof vest, and camo gear. And yelling about Obama's birth certificate.

The man did nothing wrong. He did not endanger anyone but himself. The news media grabbed this story for their front page because they could leverage readership because they could mention the royal family. Maybe this guy will be deported back to Ireland.

Funny how the gun nuts stay away from articles like this that make their pro-gun agenda sound ridiculous. Bottom line - more guns equals more violence. Take this crazy MF and also the crazy MF that killed two at the shooting range. Compare the outcomes. That's right....two dead versus zero dead. Even you geniuses can figure that one out. Oh and by the way, I own three guns, live in TX, go to the shooting range, etc etc. But common sense is common sense. And most of you people don't have any when it comes to your precious guns.

Do me a favor, go to the Uniform Crime Reporting Statistics on the FBI webpage, and look up the violent crime rate of the United States. Then go to the BHO (British Home Office), and look up the same statistic for England and Wales.

Hmm. I am a nut job. I can't legally get a gun. I know!!!! I will go to an indoor range and rent a gun. Then I will do myself. But wait. Maybe I'll do you next to me before I do myself. Its happened in Florida. And I am sure elsewhere. Don't like indoor ranges that rent guns. You never know who is next to you.

The point of the story is there are mental cases everywhere in the world, but in the US we give them guns and ammo, they shoot people and we say "guns don't kill people, people kill people". No guns kill people, knives can kill or hurt but guns kill people. What is it about Americans that we can not admit we are wrong, the arrogance of the situation is killing children. Do not defend La Pierre, he is part of the problem, he needs to step up and be part of the solution.

I think that it is time for the government to demand that all citizens relinquish all guns (of any type and kind), all knives, box cutters, linoleum cutters, wine cork removers, knitting needles, ball point pens, lawnmower blades, chain saws, ball peen hammers, jack handles, stiletto heels, and any other object that can be used as a weapon in any way whatsoever. Then, all citizens should voluntarily submit themselves to wearing heavily padded catcher's mitts on both hands at all times when in public (since one's hands can be a weapon), and finally, have shackles put on their feet and legs making it impossible to lift one's feet more than six inches off the ground.

It would be the job of the government to provide whatever form of protection is needed by its citizens, whenever and wherever needed. Hunting would be forbidden, as would fishing (those hooks can be dangerous). Farming would be rigorously controlled by a new governmental agency, since many farm implements are also dangerous and can be used as weapons. The government would then be responsible for providing all the needs of its citizens, so they would be totally dependent on the government.

Seriously, though - does anyone wonder about all the gun related stories appearing in the media? A day does not pass that the dangers of gun ownership aren't shoved down our throats by the media, either with news articles directly stating that this person or that person was shot by someone, or, with op-ed pieces subtly referring to the "dangers" we all face at the hands of crazed, gun-toting psychopaths intent on murdering the entirety of humanity. Doesn't the timing of all this prick the curiosity of anyone? Certain prominent individuals in the government have taken up the disarmament of citizens banner. Why now?

Study your history - learn what eventually happened to other powerful civilizations (Mesopotamia, Rome, Ancient Greece, Egypt, Nazi Germany, USSR, the British Empire) when the citizens of those civilizations came to rely on the government for all their needs instead of having personal initiative and responsibility as their motivating factors.

Maybe Khruschev was right - we WILL bury ourselves!

On the next viewing of Piers Morgan, a movement will be started , in all present and past colonies (including the USA).

To limit the blade length of all civilian knives to 3 inches. After all, only the military needs knives longer that 3 inches.

Oh , and knives, regardless of size, with belt clips on them, quick release functions , etc. shall be banned.

All presently owned knives fitting this description , shall be turned into law enforcement to be registered. After, registration, they will be returned to you minus the blade. After all your grandfather gave you it as a gift. So you still have the handle sides, pick, saw , etc.

Trust us, you will be safe. Call the police to write the report on your demise, rape, or robbery.

Don't worry, the legal system will make a load of public tax funded money on the case.
