Masked men burst into vacation home, rape six Spanish tourists in Acapulco, Mexican officials say

Bernandino Hernandez / AP

Police patrol on the beach near a home in Acapulco, Mexico, where masked and armed men broke in and raped six tourists.

A gang of masked men entered a vacation home near the resort city of Acapulco and raped six Spanish tourists, Mexican authorities said Tuesday.

The assailants, brandishing guns, first tied up the men with phone cords and the straps of bathing suits and then raped the women, The Associated Press reported.

A police report, obtained by Prensa Latina, a Cuba-based Latin American news service, said that 15 subjects with ski masks sexually abused the Spanish women, and also stole the belongings of a Mexican national and six Spanish men.

The assault took place Monday in the town of San Andres, Barra Vieja, in the Diamante area of Acapulco.

Acapulco Mayor Luis Walton and the state prosecutor for Guerroro said Mexican federal police were involved in the hunt for those responsible, CNN reported.

"It's a very delicate situation," Walton said at a news conference on Tuesday in which he condemned the attacks. "We are going to have the full weight of the law against those responsible."

Walton admitted the attacks would likely tarnish Acapulco’s image. The Pacific Coast resort city and its beaches are a popular destination for tourists, including American college students on spring break.

Though the number of rapes in the area is unclear, in one weekend in March 2010, at least 13 people were killed in and around Acapulco in apparent drug-gang violence, including four victims found beheaded. And, according to Reuters, some 70,000 people nationwide have been killed in drug-related violence since 2006.

Though millions of people travel to Mexico each year without incident, the U.S. State Department has issued a warning to travelers visiting the country. It says travelers to Mexico should be aware that “crime and violence are serious problems throughout the country and occur anywhere." Travelers to the Acapulco area are urged to exercise caution and stay within tourist areas.

they must have been underaged tourists..

Why do you assume they were underaged tourists? What is your definition of underaged?

      #27.1 - Tue Feb 5, 2013 8:58 PM EST

If you read the article, not just the headline, you would know that the victims were between 20 and 34.

I disagree, parratrooper. It is not the DNC who stopped the Violence Against Women Act from passing. It is also not the DNC who stopped the Fair Pay Act from passing.

Let women decide how rapists are punished. I guarantee that the average guy who feels like "having a go" will opt out given a woman's idea of justice in these matters.

Travel to Mexico should be banned by our Government, or Americans should be warned to travel there at their own risk. The benefits of said travel do not out weigh the potential trouble.

I agree NC Vet. Mexico should be placed on the "No Go" list. Unfortunatley our government sucks Mexico's a$$. (assuming you are American,as am I)

A recent chart I pulled up shows the US imported 31,943,000 barrels from Mexico for the month of November last year. How many barrels from Saudi Arabia? 39,745,000 barrels for the same month. How many billions of dollars do American corporations pour into Mexico each year? If we stopped sending Mexico tourism dollars, bailout dollars, and the multitude of other "perks" we send their way, the entire country would be beating feet across our border. Unfortunately it is an ugly truth.

I would love to see our country become Non-PC across the globe and start doing what the American people would like to do, and not what our Government does instead.

Hint: When planning your next vacation make note of those places where you are urged to use extreme caution regarding your personal safety. Ya tourism crunched in Mexico means even more illegals wanting to migrate North.

This story is sad on so many levels.

Six women raped, six Spanish men (significant others) and a Mexican national tied up and the Mexican is robbed.

Leads me to believe the Mexican national helped arrange the assault.

In Mexico they now have an updated Montezuma's revenge... you don't just get sick you now get raped or murdered! Nothing but animals down their and I am talking about the good guys... you get what you deserve, if you are dumb enough to go their!

First of all, it's Moctezuma, I don't care if it's easier to pronounce or spell with an N instead of a C. I guess Moctezuma lived in the US too, since you can also get raped or even murdered there (even when you are only 6 years old an are in your classroom).
Nothing but animals, for sure! All humans are animals (mammals to be exact).
And finally, it looks like you are dumb enough to spell it as "their" instead of "there" (and to be corrected by a Mexican girl).

You could be beheaded,or hung by a chain from the freeway overpass,or maybe have your head duct taped and set on fire.

They were probably extra hospitable because they were tourist.

Anyone who goes to Mexico for a vacation is just plain stupid. The whole country has been taken over by the drug cartels, total breakdown of law and order. Thanks to the American drug companies and all the politicians in Washington, Mexico will stay like this for a long long time.

I used to vacation in Mexico all the time, it was beautiful. My favorite town on the Pacific was Puerto Vallarta and Tulum on the Caribbean; now you could not pay me enough for me to go there.

It's partially our (the US) fault, too. Our (or the lack of) gun laws plus an insatiable appetite for drugs in the US fuel that war machine and because it is so easy to get your hands on weapons here the Mexican police unfortunately does not stand a chance against the heavily armed cartels; the US should share the responsibility and help the Mexican police and finally, let's end that ill conceived war on drugs as it is useless and does far more harm than good.

        From the article

Travelers to the Acapulco area are urged to exercise caution and stay within tourist areas.

Sounds like these Spanish tourists did just that and still got raped. Mexico is a lost and lawless country, the last time I went there we were harassed by uniformed police, it was a very sketchy ordeal. I will never return to Mexico. Yes, there are lots of people who have good experiences there, but I would say "don't go." The odds of trouble are much too high.

I'm afraid Mexico has a real problem trying to tell tourists they are safe as long as they don't stray off the beaten path. I'm from San Diego and know that the average Mexican is just like the average American citizen...just trying to support their families with honest work. Unfortunately, the press loves these types of stories as it sells paper (or Internet views). The drug cartels are ruining Mexico and until the citizens of the country demand (through daily demonstrations) honest politicians (is there such a thing?), honest police and a strong justice system I'm afraid this beautiful country will suffer such a huge economic hit from the lack of tourist dollars they may never recover.

I spent my teens and twenties running down to Ensenada ever chance I got. What changed Baja isn't just the cartels. The older Mexicans are dying out. They had honor! Seen it in L.A. Seen it in Baja.

The corruption that prevails in Mexico goes from the top to the bottom. Best advice , DO NOT GO TO MEXICO AND SPEND YOUR MONEY OR RISK YOUR LIFE. Try Florida, California, Central america.

Well said, Sophie. I would prefer that women are allowed to avenge their own honor. To me, that seems fair and likely a quick end to issues of disempowerment and PTSD flashbacks. Treating women like "ladies" is not treating women like equal citizens, paid equally, protected equally under the law, and allowed to be a force to be reckoned with when trifled with.

Self respecting women should go absolutely anywhere and everywhere in the world and not feel threatened in any way at all. Why should women be in prison so that men can do whatever they choose freely and without repercussion?

We inadvertently continue to imprison women because men are frankly not held accountable for our actions. Women are powerful beyond belief, and this is why they are made to feel inferior. Women, stand up for yourselves! Vote people out of office who would have you follow their particular brand of religion. Vote people out of office who do not support the ERA. Claim and own your power, and watch this nonsense subside

I question the sanity of anyone who goes to Mexico, especially tourists since they are looking for rest and relaxation in a country that is plagued by brutal drug wars in all sections of the country. A map of Mexico was recently published that showed which areas of Mexico are controlled by which cartel. ALL of Mexico was included in the map. Want a safer place, try the Kurdish area of northern Iraq. You will be safer.
