Police patrol on the beach near a home in Acapulco, Mexico, where masked and armed men broke in and raped six tourists.
A gang of masked men entered a vacation home near the resort city of Acapulco and raped six Spanish tourists, Mexican authorities said Tuesday.
The assailants, brandishing guns, first tied up the men with phone cords and the straps of bathing suits and then raped the women, The Associated Press reported.
A police report, obtained by Prensa Latina, a Cuba-based Latin American news service, said that 15 subjects with ski masks sexually abused the Spanish women, and also stole the belongings of a Mexican national and six Spanish men.
The assault took place Monday in the town of San Andres, Barra Vieja, in the Diamante area of Acapulco.
Acapulco Mayor Luis Walton and the state prosecutor for Guerroro said Mexican federal police were involved in the hunt for those responsible, CNN reported.
"It's a very delicate situation," Walton said at a news conference on Tuesday in which he condemned the attacks. "We are going to have the full weight of the law against those responsible."
Walton admitted the attacks would likely tarnish Acapulco’s image. The Pacific Coast resort city and its beaches are a popular destination for tourists, including American college students on spring break.
Though the number of rapes in the area is unclear, in one weekend in March 2010, at least 13 people were killed in and around Acapulco in apparent drug-gang violence, including four victims found beheaded. And, according to Reuters, some 70,000 people nationwide have been killed in drug-related violence since 2006.
Though millions of people travel to Mexico each year without incident, the U.S. State Department has issued a warning to travelers visiting the country. It says travelers to Mexico should be aware that “crime and violence are serious problems throughout the country and occur anywhere." Travelers to the Acapulco area are urged to exercise caution and stay within tourist areas.

Even with all the crime, rapes and murders being reported on a daily basis, these people think they are special and not vulnerable and continue to visit Mexico. I am sorry but their stupidity is the cause of their suffering. Mexico is not safe for people to travel and visit. Unless tourists stop visiting and send a clear message to Mexico this will continue to happen. And in our world today the criminals have all the rights while others are shoved to the wayside by everyone. Foreigners need to send a clear message or get robbed and killed. The choice is theirs to make.

It seems the violence in Mexico has tapered off some. Still, I would not recommend traveling to Mexico especially with so many other comparable destinations available. Besides the higher risk in Mexico lets not forget how corrupt and ineffective their justice system is. Its only been a few weeks since that American soldier was finally released after BS charges.
Mexico is a cess pool. I used to have a trailer at a park south of Ensenada in Baja. I haven't been to Mex in over 20 years. No plans to ever go back.

When I used to frequent Mexico, it was common knowledge to keep $100.00 on hand to give la policía who would just roust Americans for no apparent reason. A "C" Note next to your license usually worked.

I know someone going their in a few weeks! I asked them one time if they are safe there and he said they only go to public places (Tourist Areas). But this sounds like it was right in the tourist area? Any know the area down there where this occurred?? hmm

In the '70s,'80s and even early '90s traveling in Mexico was safe and fun. My husband, with our son and friends traveled many times to CanCun, Cozemel, Acapulco, Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlan, Baja/Cabo, Zihuatanejo, Mexico City, Guadalajara, Juarez, etc...now, we will nnever travel across the Mexican border for anything any longer! Too dangerous! Americans, please beware of traveling to Mexico. Very sad - I truly feel sorry for those dependent upon the American tourist, but of the Cartels and with the governments' hands (and lives) tied...Americans cannot risk their lives going there. There are too many American sites and other SAFE countries to visit. Either be careful or stay home!
With our government arming the cartels, things won't get any better.
This is so sad. I lived and worked in northern Mexico in the mid-nineties and traveled alone to many places by bus. I would never do that now, which is such a shame. Mexicans are very helpful people to travelers, and Mexico has fantastic places to visit. Going back doesn't seem to be possible now, so I am happy I took advantage of my chance to travel all over. I will miss Mexico.

Have no desire whatsoever to go to Mexico EVER. Can you imagine the crimes against tourists that isn't reported? The criminals down there would just as soon cut your throat as look at you, and then smile while they're doing it. Lo siento, I'll stay here and take my chances with a USA vacation.
One more reason why Ill never go to Mexico. I'm sure those animals are pretty much what Mexico has to offer outside of the resorts. Pretty much a garbage dump outside the walls of any resort. We use to live in a border city along the Rio Grande. There is no amount of money that would entice us to go to Mexico for any reason.

Sounds like a set-up. 15 people just happened to break into a vacation home with that many people. I highly doubt they will ever be caught and this will be the first and last time you hear of this story.
I have vacationed in different parts of Mexico over 500 times in the last 40 years. I stopped going 3 years ago and will never go again. I now go to Central America.
