South Africans mourn rape victim, say 'enough is enough'

Published at 10 p.m. ET -- BREDASDORP, South Africa - Hundreds of South Africans chanting "enough is enough" gathered on Friday at a building site where a 17-year-old girl was mutilated and left to die after being gang-raped.

Their tribute was testimony to how the killing of Anene Booysen has stirred outrage in a country where many people have become oblivious to rampant sex crimes and violence.

People marched in a procession to the site in the sleepy town of Bredasdorp, 80 miles east of Cape Town, where they placed flowers and candles by a simple wooden cross.

Booysen was found by security guards lying only a short distance from her house after partying at a nearby bar last Friday evening. She later died in hospital.

Her foster mother, Corlia Olivier, recounted the moment when she saw her daughter dumped amid the gravel and grass, her stomach slit open down to her genitals.

"I heard her saying ‘Mommy help me, Mommy help me' and I rushed over...and just saw her guts hanging out," Olivier told reporters, tears welling up in her eyes.

The incident and the public response has echoes of the gang rape and murder of a 23-year-old student on a New Delhi bus last year, which caused a national and international outcry.

President Jacob Zuma expressed shock and outrage, calling for the harshest possible sentences for the killers and a concerted campaign "to end this scourge in our society."

In Geneva, U.N. Human Rights chief Navi Pillay said South Africa must tackle a "pandemic of sexual violence" and she was concerned about low conviction rates for rapists.

"There is a need for very strong signals to be sent to all rapists that sexual violence is absolutely unacceptable and that they will have to face the consequences of their terrible acts. The entrenched culture of sexual violence which prevails in South Africa must end," said Pillay, herself a South African.

South Africa has the highest number of reported rapes per head of population of any Interpol member country, with more than 64,500 reported in 2011/2012.

Even when suspects are caught, only 12 percent of cases end in conviction. But sexual crimes seldom cause little public concern beyond some soul-searching editorials and anguished radio phone-ins.

The Womens' League of the ruling African National Congress is trying to mobilize the public into similar action to the protests against anti-female violence that took place in India after the New Delhi attack.

On Friday, Cape Town radio station KFM broadcast a "bleep" every four minutes as a reminder to listeners that another South African woman will, on average, have just been raped.

Death penalty?
At the Bredasdrop site, religious leaders and politicians linked arms with Booysen's relatives as they sang hymns and laid a wreath by the cross, adorned with a pink ribbon.

"I still hear her footsteps," Olivier said as a stream of well-wishers arrived to offer condolences.

Maree Louw, commander of the local police station, said the murder was one of the worst cases she had seen in a long career.

"The brutality and the slaughter of this young teenager is beyond belief," Louw told Reuters.

Like many towns in South Africa's Western Cape, Bredasdorp, with a population of 35,000 people, has problems with drug and alcohol abuse but, Louw said, most people would go to bed at night with their back doors open and windows unlocked.

Booysen managed to reveal the name of one of the attackers, a family friend, before dying. Three men in their early 20s have been arrested and are expected to appear in court on Tuesday on charges of rape and murder.

They face the prospect of life in prison if convicted.

Under a constitution drawn up after the end of apartheid in 1994, Nelson Mandela's "Rainbow Nation" abolished the death penalty. Some in Bredasdorp wish that were not the case.

"This crime was very sadistic and deserves the death penalty," said mother-of-three Sophia Europa. "What they did was worse than anything done to an animal."

I am at a loss for words at how sadistic and cruel these people were who raped, tortured and murdered this young woman.A 17 year old should not being going to bars partying and walking home alone no matter what country they live in.I am heartened to know that her community is outraged and want to see rapists and murders punished.

To justacleaninglady,

In saying that a 17 year old should not be going to bars and walking home alone, you are blaming the victim. You should also bear in mind that other countries have a lower legal drinking age than the U.S., but what if the victim were 25 years old? She would still be in the same danger of being attacked, due to her "choice" to be born female and exercise her right to go somewhere outside of her home. Women and girls should have the freedom to go about their daily lives without being viciously raped and murdered by sadistic subhuman monsters. But if and when it does occur, the fault lies with the attackers, not with the innocent victim who chose to leave her house to go somewhere and then attempt to go home.

This is a sick act by sick men. They should let the public have them after they go to court and are found guilty. I think that would be better than what they will get in prison given the nature of the crime.

I agree with lalaw-2439261 100%.

mj899 does make a good point, whether it is sadistic or borderline comedy. You can't stop what has already started, in this case the mentality issue of a country and law (which isn't enforced), since there is nothing for that country to do (and many others) concerning rape and death.

Unless you are all for a one-world government, such issues and tragedies will occur in places YOU DON"T LIVE IN AS A CITIZEN. As far as making the whole world into one government, that is not something (I hope) my government is willing to do, since that successfully does away with our Constitution, and any amendments.

My point is, that is a local issue, but it is being flaunted as there is something the outside world should "do something about". I really don't care what happens there, since they (that country) doesn't fund my heavy tax burden. That is their problem to solve. Just as I would not expect S. Africa to do anything when something happens to me or my family, or my religion, or my government. Anything else starts to cross lines that require more than just two governments to handle/solve.

replace dick with guns. We need more education, mental health services and we need to carry a weapon of some kind. the gun is the best self defense tool on the market. Learn how to use one and when.

Will Robery

This is not a matter of politics, this is a matter of the evil acts committed against another human being, Your compassion for the victim should not be limited by geographical boundaries. Although there may not be anything you can do to personally help, to merely shrug it off shows a basic loss of humanity.

Oh MJ99, I love how the pro gun faction calls for mental health services as though this is some kind of panacea for the unbelievable number of gun deaths in the US. As a psychiatric prescriber in a maximum security forensic facility- with 20 years under my belt- I just shake my head at the ignorance. We can't force people to take medication for long, only of they're a danger to others and let me tell you, you better have an air tight case when you go before the judge. Patients have serious rights. You also think a little counseling is going to fix someone? Coupla visits to the therapist and you'll be good and not go on a murderous rampage after all? A few pills? Maybe you didn't even share that you felt like killing others. Maybe you think the CIA is plotting against you or god is telling you to kill. Maybe you didn't know and just acted on impulse.... and there was a gun handy. Maybe you were drunk or high on meth and there was a gun handy. You know, the one you keep for self-defense? By the way, I love my job. But the solution needs to be multfaceted and it's time to do something about all the guns. And when the "liberal" government wants money for healthcare? Remember what you said about funding mental health.

Mr. Binkie:

What the heck does it have to do with the color of the victim?

This is a viscious crime against women folks all over the world. The gravity of rape and murder does not depend on the color of the victim. Bottom line, a young innocent woman got brutally raped and murdered by male shovenist and they walking free with a sense of impunity. South Africans needs to better educate its young mens to respect their fellow women beings and there should more than life in prison, death penalty, maybe...

Anyway, punishment is an after the fact consequence and much less effective. Authorities should have policies and practices in place so that this type of heinous crimes do not occur in the first place...

Mr. Equalizer, we have laws in place here in the good ole US of A and the same crime is happening here all the time. How do you propose we deal with it? It's a world wide epidemic and the more men get away with it the more it happens. Our troops overseas and here have a huge problem and the "good ole boys" shove it under the rug. This horrendous crime will never go away until men man up and take their fellow men to task instead of pushing it to the side with excuses like South Africans need to educate their young men, give me a freakin break. Take responsibility for your own country and "educate" your young men. Rape is a crime of violence by men who want power over their victims. Please don't repeat the same old tired verbiage about protecting our women folk. Gawd it's so lame...Men who rape should have the offending assault weapon removed permanently, that would surely solve the problem of recurrence just as if they had used a gun....samo samo in my opinion...

The Equalizer-2838936,

"Shovenist" isn't a word, but I wish it were. The word you were probably trying for was "chauvinist": A man whose behavior and attitude toward women indicate a belief that they are innately inferior to men. (from The Free Dictionary).

Shovenist is much more violent, coming from the word "shove." Chaucer used the word "shoven," and it suggests one who shoves other people around, a bully who shoves. It is also easier to spell. This word that you used is an honest word, and again, I wish it were in our regular vocabulary, and I congratulate you on coining a word that better fits this report.

My condolences to the girl's families. I hope her murderers are swiftly brought to justice in this life.

Blaming the victim is just as bad as the rapists and allows them to get away with the rapes. If men are unable to control themselves around women maybe we should just herd the men up and only let them around women for purposes of reproduction. And if you read the entire article, one of her rapists was a family friend. So probably if she was walking home with him and not alone the same thing would have happened to her anyway. These young men need to be physically castrated using a rusty knife and a pair of pliers without any pain relief or antibodics in the public sqaure where everyone can watch. Then maybe the next time some young man will think before he acts.

This has EVERYTHING to do with how sons are raised! South Africa, indeed all nations where women are mistreated, needs to address the education of young boys. I do not believe that this abhorrent violence is born.... it is taught and then it is supported by their culture. All the punishment in the world can't stop it but some measure of accountability would help and again, teaching boys that this kind of behavior is NOT manly or worthy.

Also to bow2me, the current Newsvine format sucks. Allowing people to collapse comments arbitrarily renders the validity of this blog nil. I rarely post here anymore for that reason.

You people have to STOP feeling sorry for these boys and men that do these things!!! MEN DO NOT HAVE TO FOLLOW THEIR DESIRES!!! They will NOT die if they see a pretty woman and don't touch her!!! People need to STOP making excuses for men doing the things they do! I don't care what country it is. Some of you are saying that women are raped in the United States too and they are just like everyother country but NOT to the degree that they are in some of these third world countries. These countries have to come out of the dark ages and realize that the women they see as filth, scum and low are the reason they are here! God made women just as he did men! There are places I wouldn't want them to chance. Not just women either, I don't go there my self. They are known for trouble. I'm not saying it's her fault only that saying what it should be, doesn't make it so. That means it's best not to take the chance.

As far as the rape of 2 year olds as a "cure" for HIV/AIDS I have never heard of something so bazaar in my life. Most HIV Children of that nation are born with HIV. That is why there is such a push to get women that are HIV positive to have C-sections.

The original story said that she was a few blocks away from her home, coming home from a bar when this happened. It didn't say what type of neighborhood it was or that crime in that area was any greater than anywhere else. I would think that if it was a higher crime area she would have felt the need to have some friends with her.

Like many towns in South Africa's Western Cape, Bredasdorp, with a population of 35,000 people, has problems with drug and alcohol abuse but, Louw said, most people would go to bed at night with their back doors open and windows unlocked.

The article suggests that it is a safer area just based on the report.

I can understand not going into certain areas that are not safe, no matter time of day, for women and in some cases men, and the need to be with someone else or a group when going into those areas, no matter where anyone lives.

The sad part is, no matter how much we publicly condem these acts whether in India or SA, this will always happen on this scale and a much larger one as populations increase.

It's culture and it's deep rooted into it. Women are meant to be seen, not heard in the majority of India. South Africa, not so much the same as India, but still there.

As progressive as they may try to seem, India is a dirty country where the cultural and social respects of women are seen as "having their place" or no place at all. Liberal minded women are often outcasts. We can report it, complain and be disgusted all we want, it isn't going to end. As someone very well traveled and having grown up in San Jose, Ca, I've seen PLENTY of this culture.

South Africa's greatest problems are the lack of education and the increase of corruption in the police and government system. Apartheid may be over, but the inequalities that exist within the country are still the source of violence and corruption - and it's only getting worse. However, what happened to this young girl could happen in any society, whether "equal" or not. It's unfortunate that this horrific incident is only getting this much attention due to the recent incident in India as well. My only hope is that this attention will put more responsibility on South Africa's justice system...although my hopes are rather low. As for the comments in regards to South Africa's views on rape cures - 80% of the people in African nations follow traditional medicine (aka witch doctor, natural healer, whatever you want to call it) over bio-medicine. This leads to non-western medical beliefs. Sadly in certain cases (but not most) these beliefs can be quite terrible - (sleeping with a virgin to cure aids, showering after sex to prevent aids, etc., etc,). EDUCATION IS A MUST!! Just my two cents.

In my personal opinion, there is no lower form of life than that of a child molester and a rapist. Both need to be castrated and there little peckers shorten even more, leave just enough to pee in their pants. Then they need 4 fingers removed from each hand. Then put a large tattoo on each arm and across the forehead saying what they did. No long term prison or death sentence needed and no Government hand out for those convicted.

Then they are put on lists where they are completely unable to get testosterone. Then they need to be branded, on their faces with a universal sign (agreed on and internationally publicized) so they can be avoided and shunned.

No woman should ever be able to sink that low. It is far better for women to organize together in their communities to see that justice is done, support given for victims, neighborhood watch groups are formed, young girls and other women educated, as well as young boys against this kind of treatment. Being proactive so such things don't happen to begin with. If women, naturally more nurturing by nature, can help prevent such acts to begin with, by helping change the society they live in, then that is the best response they can make.

          bow2me-

Only some humans are evil creatures. While most have done good things. The difference is there is no logical reason for choosing to do evil towards another life. And it is those who choose to do evil, that cause so many problems for the rest.

At the ending of apartheid, the death penalty was abolished because it had been used as a tool of oppression/terror by the apartheid era regime (white (minority) rule) against the (predominately black) population. Particularly against those who dared to resist apartheid. The corruption of power put innocent people to death for "crimes"; it wasn't about "justice". The lived reality for the majority population was that "killers" in the form of the apartheid regime "killed" and "still live" -- sanctioned by the (then) government.

The Truth and Reconciliation Commission provided an avenue for justice without the (feared) bloodletting once apartheid ended. Abolishing of the death penalty ended an abusive "justice" system - at least symbolically.

It is important to know/understand the history/context of the place that is the subject of this horrific event. (Although I do understand that is not a reasonable expectation for comment sections -- despite the nifty "handle" of the commenter.)

Rape is a crime of power not sexual gratification. Who has tried to exert power over the masses with money that was mostly given to them (inherited).Yet they would gladly kill anyone who would even suggest they share some of their inheritance with a starving child. Who has waged a war on the middle class and teachers (who are mostly women). Yep sounds likes libs to me (Sarcasm).

What is this about leaving doors unlocked in South Africa? All you have to do is drive around South African cities to see burglar bars on windows and tall walls surrounding homes with razor wire topping them. This is the case in all the neighborhoods whose residents can afford this "privilege." Farmers and their families are regularly being tortured and killed. People live in constant fear, especially the white folk.

Oh my God, this is horrible. There has to be an ethereal(3. heavenly or celestial) way to rid our world of this, It seems that the demons that are wrecking havoc in our world, are now aiming there deadly deeds at our young women. We just had a killing of a 17 y/o here in Cleveland, shot to death in her backyard; another incident of someone driving thru a crowd of people holding a vigil for a 19 y/o young man, killed in a hit and run accident; A young man gunned down on Lotus in Cleveland, OH;They just had the funeral of the 15 y/o girl in Chicago; The woman in India who was gang raped... on an on anywhere in the world. What is going on and what can we do that will be effective in stopping these things, if anything. I feel so hopeless right now.

I am sure there is something that the brainstorming minds in our world can contrive to solve this problem along with the knowledge from the creator. As I sit here writing this, this is what is coming into my mind: I believe as we raise our higher consciousness to embrace the vast knowledge that the universe has to offer, we become better and better beings , getting closer and closer to our God-selves. We cannot wait until the coming of a savior because that ain't happening. We are from the creator therefore we are equipped to solve this problem. If you embrace the knowledge and live according to the law of love then the world will be a wonderful place and the demons will be exposed for all to see, so they could be eradicated forever. I believe this with all my heart and soul.

              I feel hopeful once again.

Worldwide, there is a pandemic of sexual violence because most political leaders and lawmakers are men; and men are the perpetrators. We take care of our own. No violence should be tolerated. Keep control of yourself or be eliminated off the planet; that is the way it should be.

My stance is that rape is the lowest vile crime there is, and that the perp's (if found guilty) should be sexually disabled for life. With this particular crime, I cannot speak of the things I would like to see happen to these men as they are not socially acceptable...

Behind every rapist is a long line of enablers: people who spent years making excuses for him, teaching him how to avoid punishment for violent or antisocial behavior, and standing between him and the otherwise predictable consequences of his actions.

Nearly every rapist has a mother and (sometimes) a father who are "shocked" and "outraged" that their boy could be capable of such disgusting behavior. Yet these are generally parents who turned a blind eye to lesser offenses, who allowed their boys to run with ill-mannered, disrespectful peers, who winked and nodded at occasional illegal drug use, who perhaps encouraged aggressive behavior against other children especially sisters and cousins, who condoned the torture of animals, or who stood up for their children against the "bad" teachers or policemen who tried to impose consequences. Sometimes the parents modeled irresponsible or violent behavior for their children. Other times the parents are just too busy, overburdened by multiple children or struggling to earn a living. They simply have no time to teach compassion or consequences; they're too tired and overworked, and because of the social emphasis on the nuclear family, there are no grandparents or spare adults in sight to share the burden.

Neighbors, too, often see delinquent behavior that they do not report to the parents, because the neighborhood is so fragmented that nobody knows the person next door and the parents are afraid to speak to one another.

Until a complete stranger is at liberty to correct a child who is acting out in public (without being threatened, hit, or abused by an overprotective parent out to defend his or her special little indigo snowflake's right to throw a public tantrum), and until our society shifts away from the notion of the nuclear family as healthy and normal, we're going to continue to have children and young people who get used to the idea that their actions have no consequences.

Rape is a sexual animalistic behavior fueled mainly by the desire to dominate, for whatever misguided development in their psyche, but the mutilation of this young woman demonstrates something beyond domination: hate in its purest form. Where did such hatred manifest from?

For people to harbor so much hatred, there is something that comes from elsewhere: something in your essence. Whether it was there from the beginning or came later, I don't know. There are plenty of children who will become violent, but all will not rape or mutilate..

The politically correct movement needs to end and we need to punish crime instead of rewarding these punks. jails are over crowded and the reason is life in prison is not punishment. Heck in the USA they even can get sex changes paid for by taxpaying people that have been hurt by these same type slobs. Hard to believe there are so many places where gangs have taken over towns and people just let it happen. I can't understand why castration is not used in these most extreme cases. If they use their tool like a weapon, take it away and let them urinate like a girl the rest of their lives. This should make them think twice at least. Pain for pain.

Because I am not a man, I cannot know if the prospect of physical castration would be a deterrent to men contemplating such a crime. I am guessing that, over time, it would have that effect. If it was generally known that if you were proven guilty of such an assault you would be losing your genitals, many men might think twice before committing rape. The idea of lopping off genitals is barbaric. But life in prison is not an adequate punishment for horrendous crimes. What is difficult to understand is how people can come to adulthood with no sense of compassion or empathy for other human beings, no compunction about committing unspeakable violence upon them. Were these men blind to what must have been her tears and her contorted face, deaf to her screams or cries? And if they were, how is it that so many people, in so many places, seem to have lost their humanity? Surely it can't simply be peer pressure or the absence of parental guidance. There is---or should be---something innate in us that recoils from hurting others. Basic human decency shouldn't have to be a course that is taught.

Unfortunately we are experiencing the generation of children that were raised by the "Hippies" of the late sixties. If it feels good then you should have a right to do it. Who cares if it affects someone else that's their problem. Force the majority to accept your wish's and if you have any your morals (mostly lack of them), the ACLU will sue if they don't yield to your minority views, you have the right to force everyone else to accept your degenerate ways. Your a minority! Smoke rubber, dishwater, pot or eat anything that gets you high. Don't face reality, don't accept any blame for whatever you do, its always someone else's fault, after all you can always claim to have been molested that always works, takes the blame from you and puts it on someone else. It's OK to throw a temper tantrum it's healthy to throw a fit if you don't get your way every time, heaven forbid a child has to learn self control! Give every child a trophy win or lose, cant have a child facing the reality that everyone loses and often. Respect for your elders? Sc#@w that! I'm smarter than all of those people I know everything! I don't have to be polite and those old people just don't want me to have any fun! Sandy Hook is a result of liberalism at it's worst No discipline! If mom says I should do something I don't want to do I'll kill her! After all I've been talking back and kicking her for years, all she ever did was give me a nice time out!She never blistered my ass and put a few welts on it for misbehaving and she always took my side against anyone in authority even when I was wrong, (She always told them "My child would never do that" Look for more mass shootings bound to happen "The gimme generation" is here! What me work? The government owes me a living!! Those rich people that make thirty thousand dollars a year should share their wealth and keep me fed, housed, breeding and happy!
