Strong 6.9 earthquake strikes Colombia; minor injuries reported

An intensity map shows the location of a strong 7-magnitude earthquake that struck southwestern Colombia.

A strong 6.9 magnitude earthquake jolted southwestern Colombia on Saturday, the U.S. Geological Survey reported, causing damage to more than 100 homes and injuring six people.

The quake, centered 6 miles southwest of Pasto, was 80.5 miles deep and was felt in Quito, Ecuador, 123 miles away, where buildings shook for at least two minutes, Reuters reported. Some residents were evacuated briefly in the Colombian capital, Bogota.

Five adults and a child suffered minor injuries and more than 100 buildings, mainly private homes, were damaged, Reuters reported.

"For the time being, the assessment shows that 124 homes, a health clinic and three schools have been damaged, and a church was destroyed, but no one was killed or disappeared," said Carlos Ivan Marquez, the head of the national emergency services office.

Marquez said they have not issued a tsunami warning and there have been no aftershocks.

USGS originally reported the tremor, which happened at 9:16 a.m. ET, had a 7.0 magnitude earthquake.

100% in agreement.

Pride in grammar and proofreading for content seems to be a fast fading attribute in journalism...

I would say Mother Nature is in an interesting mood lately. What with blizzards, volcanoes, flooding, earthquakes and the soon coming asteroid brushing past earth. From over the past week and into the next. She just wants to spoil us it seems AND to keep on our toes! It's one of those smorgasbords where you choose your favorite event, grab some popcorn and enjoy the spectacle. But let's hope no one gets hurt mean while. :-P

International Living is having their annual get together this weekend in Quito to take hundreds of dollars from each attendee to convince them to move to Ecuador. I am sure this earthquake helped emphasize the adventure of moving to the Andes.

But what about the side affects like that massive tidal wave and those nuclear power plant meltdowns?

Right on Cassie! Columbia is a university, the name of the U.S. capital district, the female personification of America, the name of many cities, and of a former Space Shuttle. Colombia is a South American country. MSNBC, I'm available for proofreading!

Just like the classic R.E.M song .( It's the end as the world as we know it ). It's happening and if you're in denial well that's your state of mind. But it's coming . And when it does i will have a fine expensive bottle of scotch and a fatty that will put me into a sublime state of mind. Good luck to all of you it's not going to happen @!$%#s.

Honestly. It's bad enough I can't get my Spanish students to spell Colombia correctly. I'd like for them to be able to rely on NBC's World News for web assignments, but... yeah...

Hey, did they spell Colombia wrong? I don't think anyone has mentioned it yet... It's as if NBC News set fire to a bus of babies.

"Columbia" is the brand of clothing, "Colombia" is the South American country.

It was named after Christopher Colombus?

Yes, Doug. Colombia is named after Cristóbal Colon (Spanish), whose given name was Cristoforo Colombo (Italian).

Only the Columbias in the English speaking world were named after Christopher Columbus.

I have friends over in colombia and I know colombia is under the faults. This is one part of the faults that hardly ever moves. Which is Good, we don't really need earthquakes that do damages. Colombia's economy is over suffering alot and an earthquake would damage the economy even more, it will unit the people out of fear of God but the economy would get hurt. 6.9 earthquake is a pretty strong earthquake though.

I am a couple of hundred miles north in a different Colombian city and as an engineer was quite intrigued by the response of our earthquake resistant home . This was the strongest of four or five I have experienced , I think . No damage to the house or contents .
