Infant attacked by fox in London

A four-week-old baby in London, England, is recovering in hospital after a fox dragged him from his cradle and bit his finger off.

British police have confirmed they are investigating a fox attack on a 4-week-old baby at his home in Bromley, South-East London.

The baby was taken to hospital on Wednesday after the attack which left him with a hand injury. Britain’s Daily Mail newspaper reports the child was asleep when his mother heard a scream, then a heavy thud, as the baby was dragged to the floor.

Reports say one of the boy’s fingers was bitten off and had to be re-attached by surgeons.

In response to the startling attack, London’s mayor, Boris Johnson, said more must be done to tackle the problem of urban foxes.

At night time, it’s not unusual to see the animals in the city scavenging for food.

In 2010, baby twins were mauled by a fox as they slept in their cradles at home in East London. It entered the house through a back door which had been left open on a summer’s evening. Both girls suffered scarring to their faces and arms.

We live in woodland area with coyotes, foxes and they have never attempted to get into the house. They're more scared of us However, we do have coy dogs that seems more bolder thanks to irresponsible pet owners dumping their pets out in the woods. The city must be a smorgasbord for any animal, especially with all the garbage and food that is thrown out daily.Add to the mix, loss of habitat. We are the ones to blame and for that we shoot them? I smell Fox burgers.

guns are banned in england, foxs are free to prey without fear of being shot ? It will only get worse over there un less they wake up and let the people defend themselvs.

I read the article twice. It said the fox pulled the baby out of its crib?? That seems like a very difficult task for the fox. How high are crib bars in England? (No comment on bars, they are called pubs in the UK):-) I wonder if this case involves someone feeding the fox. I am surrounded by woods, I see foxes, deer , and a bear once. All of them afraid of me. When I lived in another state, I used to feed the foxes dog food (I know that's bad) but they would line up behind my house at 5:00 waiting for food. They were a little bolder, but still kept a distance.

I hope for the best with the baby, and foxes do what comes natural to them. Hope they don't put a bounty on the foxes.

Red Rider: maybe they could shoot at them with a bb gun. In the UK it costs $5K for a gun permit. UK's violent crime rate is 3.5 times the United States rate. Murders in the USA are down by 52% since 1992. Liberal media seemed to miss that trivia fact ( from FBI data).

We really must take steps in order to protect our communities from attack by animals which regard us as 'food.'

Unfortunately it is difficult to pass legislation designed to control these animals. Each time this is attempted such legislation is resisted by those who claim that "the attacking animals [foxes, coyotes, mountain lions, sharks, alligators, etc.] got there first" and that we are invading their homes.

These are often the very same people who advise that we should not plant trees as these cause forest fires.

Have these self-styled animal lovers lost their souls? Or are they simply having a good laugh?

All you people defending the fox and implicitly finding it worth as much if not more than the child...have you no shame, no conscience, no common sense? If they have to destroy every fox on the planet to save one baby, tough for the foxes. Someone said it is good that what we see here on these forums is merely a tiny minority of public opinion. I hope so, although I am sure the political parties hire college kids, shut-ins and insane people to post pernicious partisan stuff.

In December I was visiting my son in London. He lives less than a mile south of the river. Lots of homes and apartment buildings. I looked out the window and saw a fox trotting by a playground. I don't know if there's anything that can be done aside from the humans being cautious.

A couple #2 leg holds will deal with it, red fox goes for about $20, make a hat for yourself and there will still be enough born next spring. They are too smart to all be caught. Its a renewable resource. Then you can stop buying oil based synthetics.

The difference in there and here is that we can own guns. Not even the cops carry them there. We just go out and blow their brains out, no more problems! Where I live we have coyotees and we find them trying to get into the hen house so we just shoot em and skin them and sell the hide, no problem. If you wanna leave your doors open on a hot summer night get a door with at least a screen to close or use a baby gate, maybe even a half door. Oh and baby monitors help as well. I hope the child recovers fully and has no permanent injuries.

The local foxes union stated that the urban terrorism by its members would continue until the people of the British Isles stop riding to the hounds and terrorizing, not only foxes, but all creatures, great and small. The union also stated that there would be no further communique until their demand had been met. In the meantime, the Queen was overheard telling her staff to load her pheasant guns and she would attempt to quash the insurrection herself. Jolly good, what?

It's not a fox problem, its a human stupidity problem! Use some common sense - close your damn doors & invest in steel screen doors made to keep animals out if you want fresh air at night. Also, ever heard of a window? Great invention too.

This is a nation which raised fox hunting to an art form. It is high time the foxes struck back. I understand as we speak they are breeding English Peoplehounds to hasten the search for sleeping infants.

How stupid can you be to let your baby unprotected knowing you live in a foxes area? Even my cat would engage in a fight with a fox before letting it in the house. Foxes have been baned from hunting so now they are growing out of control. Not all critters should be banned from hunting ,.. there should be a regulated hunting of species that grow out of control . In nature they are controlled by natural selection but when the critter dont have a natural enemy in the area their population grows havoc.Foxes are not an exotic and endangered animal like tigers or lions and beside that they are more damaging than the positive they may contribute to the habitat. If anything and people care so much about them , they should be domesticated or breed indoors by men and controlled this way so they are not extinguished but neither overpopulated.

This is why abortion should not be banned; humans are not endangered, and can be more damaging than the positive they may contribute to their habitat. They should be bred indoors by men and controlled so they are not extinguished but neither overpopulated.

Call me what you will, but I am so sick to death that humans think that the earth and everything on the planet is theirs exclusively.
