'Blade Runner' Oscar Pistorius charged with murder

The athlete who rose to fame in London last summer as the first amputee runner in the Olympics has reportedly been arrested by South African police after his girlfriend was shot and killed in his home. NBC's Rohit Kachroo reports and NBC sports analyst Ato Boldon talks about the case, calling it an "absolute shock."

Olympic and Paralympic star Oscar Pistorius was charged with murder Thursday after his girlfriend was shot dead at his South African home.

South African Police spokeswoman Denise Beukes said that Pistorius, 26, and the victim were the only people present when the shooting took place. The woman had been shot at least twice, police said.

Pistorius will appear for a court hearing on Friday at 9am local time, the South African prosecutor’s office confirmed.

Numerous media outlets reported that the sprinter -- who is nicknamed "Blade Runner" because he races wearing carbon fiber prosthetic blades -- may have mistaken the woman for an intruder.

Beukes would not confirm the victim's identity, but said investigators were "very surprised" to hear media reports that the shooting was possibly a case of mistaken identity.

A publicist for Reeva Steenkamp, a model whom Pistorius was dating, confirmed to NBC's TODAY that her client was dead. She described the incident as a "huge loss for everyone and too shocking for words."

Oscar Pistorius and Reeva Steenkamp attend an award ceremony in Johannesburg, South Africa, on November 4.

Beukes said there were no signs of forced entry to the home and said that police would oppose any application Pistorius might make to be released on bail.

Beukes said there had been reports about previous problems at Pistorius' home that were "allegations of a domestic nature." When a reporter asked if she meant domestic violence, she nodded and said yes.

"There are witnesses and we have interviewed them," she added. "We're talking about neighbors and people who heard things earlier in the evening and when the shooting took place."

The Associated Press reported that a 9mm handgun had been found at his home in the luxurious Silver Woods gated community.

More on this story from NBC Sports

Sarit Tomlinson, who is Steenkamp's publicist, told Britains' Sky News that the the pair had been together for a couple months.

"She was a rising star ... a very bright young girl," Tomlinson said. She noted that "no one knows what happened" but said "we are in communication with the people on the scene."

The Silver Woods Country Estate released a statement on its website early Thursday: "We are deeply saddened by the tragic circumstances that occurred today at Silver Woods. Our sincere condolences, thoughts and prayers go out to Reeva Steenkamp’s family and friends."

Steenkamp, a 30-year-old law school graduate, gushed about Valentine's Day on Twitter Wednesday, posting "What do you have up your sleeve for your love tomorrow???" and "It should be a day of love for everyone."

Pistorius was born without a fibula in both legs and battled for years to be allowed to compete against able-bodied athletes.

'National hero'
He was the first double amputee to run in the Olympics. He qualified for the 400-meter semi-finals and 4 x 400-meter final at the London 2012 Summer Games.

His website highlighted that Pistorius ran in 11 races during the London 2012 Olympics and Paralymics and returned home with "two Paralympic gold medals, Paralympic silver, two world records, a Paralympic record, an Olympic individual semi-final and an Olympic final."

Pistorius, a double amputee born without fibulas in his legs, has trained hard to participate in the Olympics despite having to wear prosthetic legs. NBC's Mary Carillo reports.

He earned headlines after qualifying for the 2011 world championships in Daegu, South Korea, and is widely considered the world's most famous disabled athelete.

Speaking to Sky News, South African journalist Kribani Pillay described Pistorius as a "national hero and national icon."

Violent crime is major issue in South Africa, and many homeowners own guns.

In a January 2012 New York Times article, Pistorius described his reaction to a security alarm going off in his home:

He mentioned that a security alarm in the house had gone off the previous night, and he had grabbed his gun and tiptoed downstairs. (It turned out to be nothing.)

I asked what kind of gun he owned ...  He fetched his 9-millimeter handgun and two boxes of ammunition. We got back in the car and drove to a nearby firing range, where he instructed me on proper technique. Pistorius was a good coach. ... I asked him how often he came to the range. “Just sometimes when I can’t sleep,” he said.

The U.S. State Department Bureau of Diplomatic Security warns of the danger of Pretoria and other South African cities: "On a rating scale of low, medium, high, and critical, Pretoria, Johannesburg, Durban, and Cape Town are rated 'critical' for crime."

Citing South African Police Service 2011 crime statistics, the agency pointed out home invasion as a particularly violent crime that occurs "at an alarmingly high rate."

In Gauteng Province, which includes Pretoria and Johannesburg, there were 7,039 home invasions reported in 2011, according South African police statistics.

Artist Melinda Bam of Pretoria, who was Miss South Africa 2011, expressed her sadness on Twitter and mentioned "how unsafe most South Africans feel because of crime."

South Africa's Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee declined to discuss the shooting.

"SASCOC ... knows no more than what is in the public domain, which is there has been an alleged fatal shooting on the basis of a mistaken identity and an apparent assumption of a burglary," it said. "The organization is in no position to comment on the incident other than to say our deepest sympathy and condolences have been expressed to the families of all concerned."

Oscar Pistorius may soon make history as the first double amputee to compete in the Olympics. The South African sprinter's emergence as one of the world's fastest runners has generated controversy over whether his carbon fiber prosthetic legs give him an unfair advantage, something he vehemently denies. NBC Sports' Mary Carillo reports.

NBC News' Matthew DeLuca and the Associated Press contributed to this report.

It's an internationally known figure being charged with murder. What do you expect?

Certainly didn't expect to see this headline. If it's true that Oscar had mistaken her for a burglar, he will be beside himself with grief and will probably need some counseling. We can only hope this was not in fact an intentional murder.

Looked up his girlfriend, extremely beautiful supermodel (FHM cover model). Even if I hadn't seen her, I would have thought the burglar story extremely doubtful.

It's probably one of those can't live without you stories.... But even if its not. Even on the slim chance it was a tragic mistake, shooting at shadows while not knowing where in the home your girlfriend is, will still support a murder charge (i.e. murder by criminal recklessness).

It's awfully hard to believe the burglar story when he pumps not one but "two" shots into her.

Sounds to me that he was going to lose her considering her career was on the fast track so, he killed her and made up the burglar story.

I'll never understand why people just can't let someone go and move on instead of the old, if I can't have her, nobody can BS. POS man...

It sounds like what Pistorius had up his sleeve was a gun.

Not a day of love for her, sadly.

Believe it or not, most deaths by gun in the US are caused by either suicides or a domestic dispute gone bad. A woman who owns a gun is 2.7 times more likely to be killed by a firearm than one living without. So yes, guns are not always the answer are they?

Looks to me as though the 'news' you're supporting does the same thing... Yesterday in her tweet it didn't seem as though she was about to ditch him.. If she was ditching why was she coming into his home unannounced? I'm not saying he didn't murder her but I sure as heck am not saying he did either.. Let's all see what the investigation turns up before any of us plays jury. In the meantime for heaven sake just quit sniping at each other. If we don't all start getting along better and standing up for making America well again we're going to wake up one day to find there is no chance of fixing it. Peace

I don't buy the story that he thought she was an intruder...but if she did sneak in, she was beyond stupid. If you know your boyfriend keeps a gun on his night table & you live in a place with lots of home invasions, you don't plan a midnight sneak.

But really, Jessica, do you think that people have a gun to protect their stuff? People who keep a gun for protection are trying to prevent their families (or themselves) from ending up dead or tortured during a home invasion. Did you miss the news about the home invasions in Cheshire, CT, or Milford, NH--to name just a few of the worst? It's not about the flat screen.

After reading a lot of other posts and updates, it "is" looking more like she was going to surprise him in his home (they did not live together) and she had a key and knew the alarm code.

He obviously didn't know she was going to surprise him and thought someone had broken in.

OMG if this is true, then this has got to be one of the worse scenarios that could ever possibly happen between two people who certainly loved one another so much.

Honestly, I love my wife so much that if this were me, they'd find us both dead. I'd have to leave a note explaining the situation so they don't simply think it was a murder suicide.

What a terrible shame man. Even if they figure out that the above is true and find him innocent, he's marked for life...... Guess we'll find out more in future updates.

We should wait to see what the investigation turns up. Two scenarios are possible, he did shoot out of jealousy that her career was taking off and she would leave him, OR she did sneak in after it was over and he shot before identifing his target.

Either way he is toast and she is dead. Tragedy, but not the fault of the firearm.

MSNBC looks to be reporting the story as is and does not have the typical anti gun rhetoric that I usually read.

I'm not very familiar with Pistorius, nor am I at all familiar with South African laws, but considering this issue from an American point of view, the fact that he was charged with murder rather than with manslaughter or involuntary manslaughter suggests that this issue involves more than just a homeowner protecting his property from a suspected intruder.

Also, for all of you who are tempted to apply the America's current gun control frenzy to South African society, please remember that South Africa is not the US.

There might have been some updates to this story after people posted but the article quotes the South African Police spokesperson as saying:

Beukes would not confirm the victim's identity, but said investigators were "very surprised" to hear media reports that the shooting was possibly a case of mistaken identity.

      and:

Beukes said there had been reports about previous problems at Pistorius' home which were "allegations of a domestic nature." When a reporter asked if she meant domestic violence, she nodded and said "yes".

Or maybe he had a gun because home invasions tend to be violent crimes. My parent's home was broken into last week in the middle of the day. My dad was home alone and the perp attacked him with the crowbar that he had used to break into the house. My dad wasn't resisting in any way and would have let the guy take the TV, which is the only thing he took, because he isn't willing to risk his life over a stupid TV. My dad is fine and the perp was arrested the next day but if you think those who break into homes aren't also acting violently when they encounter the residents of those houses, you are badly mistaken. If someone breaks into your house while your home there's a good chance they will do very violent things to you when they find you.

          Larry Dash,

You do realize that more women being shot with guns in no way proves that having a gun causes danger right? They probably have guns because of the danger they face. Cops carry guns, and cops get shot more than the general public. Gas station and other cash rich place workers also tend to carry guns since armed robbery is more likely. Or they have more guns because they live in a dangerous liberal hell hole like Chicago or Detroit and have to defend themselves. Please take a statistics class before you try to pass a statistic as proving your point.

And people this happened in South Africa. This is a different country than the US.

Jessica, your comment is really dumb. If this WAS a case of mistaken identity, did it ever occur to you that Pistorius feared for his life? Even though he was stupid not to find out first who it was, it's more than remotely possible that when he thought someone had broken into his house, he feared for his life. Wouldn't YOU if a burglar who wants "thing" busted into your home? Newsflash, Jess: Burglars have been known to MURDER homeowners!!!

            #1.58 - Thu Feb 14, 2013 12:16 PM EST

So all you lefties out there don't realize this happened in South Africa? NOT part of the U.S., ergo, U.S. gun laws do not apply, no NRA, GOP of United Democratic Socialist Party. South Africa requires a mental evaluation and two year waiting period to own a hand gun. But hey, I guess international bounders, the Atlantic ocean, and a completely different set of laws means nothing to the died in the wool, brainwashed, Brahman demoncrat gun grab loons.

And to all those women out there who think burglars are only after you property, think again, rape is usually an option if they think they can get way with it. An intruder can and will take more than property. But hey, you have 911 (state sponsored dial a prayer), right? The cops will ride to your rescue, right?,,,,, maybe they will,,,,, eventually. They usually arrive to take pictures of the body and inventory your place, take some more pictures, drink coffee, have a donut or two. Don't get me wrong, the cops do a good job for the most part, but, they can't be every where. You should feel better. Waiting for them to show up while being brutalized in you own home. Hero worship, like pacifism, can get you killed. But hey, your choice.

I won't speculate until hearing more. The investigators seem to know more about the case than the media or the media isn't reporting everything since they say the investigation team was surprised to see this reported as a mistake in identity. But about the amount of shots, that's what they teach in gun safety and self protection classes, "Two shots to center mass."

One thing is for certain - if you get into a relationship and within only a couple of months there are instances of domestic violence, it is time to leave. It is time to leave the first time something happens!

I hear that firearms are very persuasive in keeping a girl with you. But yeah, but she shouldn't have let the fact that the guy was packing keep her from ending the relationship. :P

Whether an intentional slaying or an accident, it is a dreadful tragedy. Two scenarios, very different but both awful for everyone involved.

multiple firing is not an accident...it shows intent. Neighbors heard disturbing sounds prior to the shots. Now the guy is charged with her murder. Does not look good.

He has been charged with murder, there is no mention that this is an ongoing investigation. Who cares about his career, a young woman was murdered by her boyfriend. This article is mostly about his accomplishments that are absolutely meaningless in light of what he did! They mention Ms Steenkamp as the "girlfriend" and the victim. The media needs to stop focusing on the killers.

This has nothing to with his prosthesis but everything to do with the attitude athletes, movie stars, politicians, C.E.O.s an most high profile celebrities" obtain, after their fans flood them with adoration and praise. Yes. Oscar won a medal but that is all he did. There are so many other careers, where people dedicate themselves to winning but never receive the kudos they deserve. Parents, nurses, policeman, fireman, waitresses, to name a few, of the people, whose only mission, is to do their best. No accolades or honors, are ever bestowed upon these heros and yet, they have worked just as hard, to achieve, perfection. They are the best in their fields and no one has ever asked them, for an endorsement for a product; asked them, if they are going to Disney World, created a fan club or any of the bizarre things the adoring fans, of these psuedo heroes do, to create the illusion, they are a better person.

When we start honoring our mothers and fathers and I do not mean the Hallmark variety of honor, I mean, appreciating the people who have created a decent human being. Or a fireman who drivess up to an auto accident and provides care, while looking at gruesome carnage, that is when humanity becomes human. Compassionate and caring people, always take the back seat, to egos like Donald Trump or Mitt Romney. Decent people are looked down upon the country club set or the "Haves."

I believe, once we die, that is when we will see the halos of those who really deserve, the medals and the accolades. Remember those "haves" cannot take it with them. They will be stripped to their very soul, if they have one.

So this guy will get out of this jam because he is "A somebody" but in essence he accomplished the real status of a nobody!

We are all taught from day one all the wrong values and therefore get into all kinds of emotional dramas which lead to committing crime of moral indignation, crime of passion, jealousy and greed. All in all people are more inclined to be confrontational than conciliatory, resorting to anger at the drop of a hat due to their inability to ratiocinate, to be educated and philosophical enough to harness the ego and all the pride and principles that are not conducive to their well being and the well being of society as a whole. With the sort of upbringing most people have from parents who were badly brought up themselves by their parents who were just as badly raised, if not worse, they are all effectively victims of victims and unless there is a radical rethink, so as to rid the mind of the good old bad old ways, these sort of violence, domestic or otherwise will normally go on.

i believe the issue involved when one partner takes the life of another is often the concept of "ownership".

the murderous partner does not know how to have normal boundaries in a relationship, feels inordinate possession when the bond is formed and when the bond is threatened, feels justified in disposing of what one feels one owns. this tragicly can also extend to the children of the relationship as well. it's a pattern that repeats over and over the world around. men being the most frequent perpetrators.

those who have adoration and praise inordinately heaped upon them do tend to get an inflated sense of what they own, but that sense is certainly not limited to them.

Wasn't it Billy Sol Estes, who was accused of killing a federal agent? Instead of going to jail, the agent supposedly, shot himself in the back, several times. His death was ruled a "suicide." I have to look that up and get the facts. I remember my Mom telling me that story years ago. I'll be back.

alumnet....this was not an accident, but you are ignorant of how to handle a weapon in self defense. REAL life is not like a video game where you go for hte bonus "Head Shot" one shot kill. Anyone with gun training is taught that if you are firing your weapon in self defense, you squeeze the trigger AT LEAST twice. And if you truly feel threatened, you keep firing until you can clearly see the attacker is down. You would be a complete IDIOT to fire once and hope that your air was good, AND that the bullet didn't get deflected off something, or even just go through cleanly. Hell..even a shot that finds its target could easily allow the one that got shot to last long enough to pull out a weapon of their own and fire back.

I find your, and other comments regarding his double amputation of his legs to be absolutely disgusting and mean spirited towards all who have lost their limbs.

Not at all. I suggest you read "Don't Worry, He Won't Get Far on Foot", the autobiography of paraplegic John Callahan. Or, better yet, check out the cartoon John penned that inspired the title to the book.

I have a few of John's books. Great "dark" humor. For those who don't know, John is a cartoonist who pokes fun at everything.

Look you guys, I think your off on the wrong foot here, wait till the other shoe drops and he gives his side to the story. Or, maybe their just pulling his leg in all this, and they just want to question him. You know, see if the shoe fits. Give him a chance to stand up for himself and he'll be back on his feet in no time...No pun intended.

Oh my GOD! If a burglar that beautiful was coming to rob my house she could take anything she wanted! Never shoot first if you are dating a model! This is tragic on many levels.

Tragic but unfortunately all too predictable when there's a gun in the house, even in the hands of someone who claims to know how to use it.

By your logic, 40% of America should be dead, since 40% of homes have a gun in the house.

Very much so if you are an uninvited intruder or a suicidal person. Not so much if you are a sane and responsible gun owner. I admit that I may be killed with my own gun. If that happens, they'll have to beat me to death with it, because it's gonna be empty.

If you have a home invasion which are almost always violent and ugly and almost always involve a criminal with a gun do you want to try and hide, hope you can get to a phone (which many times they have already cut the line) then wait for a man with a gun to come save you or would you rather tell the intruder that if he attempts to come through the door you're behind it's going to be an ugly scene for him?? Trust me if you really are armed it will 'show' in your voice and he will wonder if it's worth dying for.. Taking guns from good people isn't the answer.. Do I have a great answer? No I don't.. Do I think shooting people is the answer? No I don't it should be the very last thing to do after exhausting every last hope of getting rid of a criminal in your home first.

Wrong answer. Some freak comes into my house univited, they are fair game. They don't come into your house to try and find their way back out. They mean to do harm to your and your family.

As for this clown, my first impression was that it is the "if I can have her then no one can" crap. I mean, look at her, she was a beautiful girl with a great career starting up and we all know that a lot of men cannot tolerate women having a more fantastic career than they. It reminds me of the Deborah Stratten story. Guess we'll hear what the courts decide down the road.

                                Jessica-1170252,

I don't know anyone that died in a car crash, but I still wear a seat belt. I don't know anyone whose home has burnt down, but I sill have smoke detectors and a fire extinguisher. A gun is just a tool, like anything else. If home invasion is not a concern for you, fine, don't buy a gun; nobody cares. But don't you dare try to take away my right to defend myself.

Jessica, actually there are an average of 8000 home invasions in the US every day that is 2, 920,000 a year...sounds pretty common to me. One in five homes will be invaded. According the US department of Justice, 38% of ALL assualts and 60% of rapes occur during home invasions. Consider that for a moment... source www.fbi.gov

Jessica - the article clearly says that (according to the US State Dept) crime in the South African cities is 'critical', and violent home invasions occur at an alarmingly high rate.

Your description of the crime as "not very common" seems incorrect.

I don't have any argument with you (I, too, have and use smoke detectors, seat belts and firearms), but I thought I'd just take a moment to salute your remarkably good luck. I don't think I know anyone who has not known someone to die in a car or someone whose house burned down. Fortunately, though, I don't know anyone whose home was invaded. knock, knock (and click).

Actually you are more likely to use your gun in self defense, or defending someone else than in the commission of a crime or accidental murder. By a degree of thousands.

Mistaken for a burglar? Seriously? The woman is in and out of that house all the time. What a BS line by this guy. Of course he is innocent until proven guilty. But there is little he could say to convince me otherwise.

And will the gun defenders quit whining about news stories involving the killing of innocents by guns. Get over it. Gun deaths in this day and age are news and the topic can't be swept under the rug.

Actually in the US, there are more stabbing deaths than gun deaths. (Thanks to big city thugs) Where are those headlines?

And how do you figure U.S. stabbing are the result of "big city thugs"? You are so typical. Knives are used all over this country in violent acts- especially domestic and angry drunken fights.

Considering our drug culture, gang culture, Alien culture,in most parts of the U.S., it couldn't possibly be any of these people, right? It must by Mr. and Mrs. Law abiding citizen doing it, it that it? Stereotypes are only stereotypes when it isn't true. Drive through the urban core of any U.S. major city and see for yourself. Men do this kind of thing all the time. Most are control freaks at best, and if they can't have someone, no one can is the mentality of a dolt with low self esteem. It must be some kind of evil animal instinct from way back that so many men are still like this. They don't think of a woman as another person. They think someone is stealing their freaken' rib bone when the try to leave!

Carol, as a woman, you are aware how your "fair" sex can emotionally manipulate a man and cause him to do crazy things. What makes men want women anyway? Women own the goods! Many beautiful women will latch onto a financially successful man just for the big payoff when she decides the time is right. The liberal, feminist court system encourages this type of behavior by granting females huge awards and feigning sympathy for their "plight." Having said that, I know full well that there are women who are denied a fair shake, but that's probably never in the realm of celebrety relationships. It's a bonus for divorce lawyers knowing that the husband's, or boyfriend's, deep pockets are there for the picking. It's an industry, pure and simple! So stop blaming the stupid guy. You really believe that this gorgeous model would have "fallen in love" with this guy if he wasn't famous and financially well off?

If this is a case of murder, nothing justifies murder. With that said, a man only has enough blood in their body to operate one head at a time.

Perhaps you should marry a gay guy. That way you will have the sensitive, passive girl type you clearly seek. But watch out, he might hit you with his purse if you argue and barrow you undies. OR, you can always go lesbian. You sound pretty "butch" anyway. Clearly you have a low opinion of men to begin with. But then, you might look in the mirror, with your attitude, it's no wonder you can't get along with them. There are always two sides to every story, it ain't politically correct, by it is true.

Carol, it's written into the DNA of women how to judge and evaluate men. The onus of picking a good one is up to you.

Long ago, our ancestors determined that letting the most dangerous, psychopaths among us claim all the breeding privileges didn't make for a good society (or offspring) -- so we threw most those dudes into a tar pit.

It's your choice now. There are plenty of women who have never been laid hands on, physically threatened, or even had to think of the possibility because they screen out the psychopaths, abusive, anger management dudes at first sign.

Still many women find the brooding caveman attributes attractive. They see anger, lack of control, as signs of dominance, passion, or power they think they can control.

But if you choose to play with fire, don't come crying when you get burned. Even descent guys are still guys. Its not in our interests to mitigatge the consequences of poorly choosing a mate, to protect and police your liasons with a dangerous male, or support you when it all goes to heck. When you eventually get burned, it serves as a cautionary tale, that helps better men everywhere.

Personally I think it should be illegal to shoot someone without warning, even when breaking in. Just for this reason, it might not be a burglar, and a warning would have saved a life. And if it is a burglar, they should have an opportunity to give up.

Shooting someone without warning, to me, is cowardly, and murder.

Perhaps someone familiar to "gated, exclusive" communities in Pretoria, South Africa could tell us, just how "safe" are these communities - my guess is that compared to a simple guard station here in the US - these places are difficult to "sneak" into.

Surprise, lol, they have problems just like everyone else but because they're physically challenged, handicapped, they must be given special consideration and for that reason I doubt that he'll be found guilty of anything, just another way to show how socially sensitive we all are.

I'm not trying to be insensitive here, I just think that people should get credit for what they've done and being handicapped, physically challenged shouldn't be a criteria. Thing is, I've known some who were amputees and the last thing they wanted was to be given special consideration, aside from the usual practical things like ramps and handicapped parking spaces. And, lol, I've known some in school who were the most antagonistic people around; Smart mouthing, pushing their way through crowds, being obnoxious and daring anyone to do anything about it. Lol, I knew one kid in high school, missing a leg and on crutches, he would knock books out of another kids arms; "Sorry, lost my balance." Yeah, sure. Going to the cafeteria during lunch period he would go to the head of the line. Well, nobody denied him that priviledge but, man, he sure looked smug about it. A couple of times I carried his tray for him. Pretty soon, "Hey John, c'mere and carry my tray." Tell him to kiss your ass and you would have a lunchroom monitor, a teacher, lecturing you on responsibility. Yeah well, whatever, I give them more consideration than a normal person but I draw the line when I get the impression that it's my duty, and that I'm there to serve them.

My point was the player was murdered by his girlfriend while sleeping. It never made a headlined story, even though she killed him because she found out he was viewing child pornography on his PC. You didn't know that because it wasn't a "Editors Pick".

You really don't think that's headline stuff? Because you never heard of Matthew White is pointless. Lots of people did and to assume everybody knows this Olympian is wrong. I betting if you walked out on the streets 2 days ago, most people would say "who"? Nice try.

Matthew White was a former basketball player at University of Pennsylvania, and for the Portland Trail Blazers. He led Penn to the Final 4 back in 1979.

Until the Colorado theater murders and Sandy Hook murderstook center stage, and rightfully so because they were horrendous displays of violence, the White murder story would've been page 1.

If you feel there's no gun control agenda, why mention gun control in the SOTU address? Please.

"There are witnesses and we have interviewed them," she added. "We're talking about neighbors and people who heard things earlier in the evening and when the shooting took place."

Hmm ... the neighbors reported domestic violence previously and may have heard something earlier in the evening and around the time of the shooting. Sounds like a Domestic Violence case gone horribly wrong.

Every white or Indian person I've met from SA have expressed utter horror at the domestic crime situation, how extremely dangerous things are looking at moving their families out before the place gets 'Mugabied'. They have crime there that makes inner city crime here look like a cake-walk.

You have a President there who thinks you can prevent AIDs with a shower and a major political figure (Julius Malema) advocating shooting white people and backing land redistribution. People not familiar with the present situation should set aside their preconceptions about things and realize this a country that is incredibly dangerous and adopting some ostrich head-in-the-sand attitude towards crime there gets rural farmers and those of wealth and means killed and kidnapped.

The place is closer to Latin American countries where you hear about rich people getting kidnapped or a random dozen people getting machetted to death.

The government has run the country down with the Cape Province being the only fairly safe area left. My family that is still there can't even go out during the day. Women and children are raped daily and killed. They also believe AIDS is cured by raping white women. Pretoria is not safe, this man slept with a gun in his bedside and a gun at his window. Most people world wide haven't a clue what is going on in that country. If it truly was an accident, god be with him and everyone involved.

South Halsted St., 6000 block up to and including Halsted and 63rd St. And, has high schools as BAD as Englewood and Marshall high schools. Yeah well, it's funny how a lot of people take pride in how BAD their city is, how corrupt and unmanageable it is. Black women and children are the ones being raped! The women- becuase that is the culture there and the children, becuase the myth is that sex with VIRGINS cure AIDS

I did grow up on the South Side of Chicago, went to Holmes Elementary and one semester at Englewood high school. When I lived on 5th Ave, West I went to a year of grade school that was in Marshall High School. I was one of maybe five White kids in a class of all Black kids and that experience alone should have made me a racist but it didn't. You on the other hand seem to be carrying a chip around on your shoulder.

What?, you can't be bothered with the notion that some places, actually MANY places on earth are more violent than the U.S.? Goes against your gun grab agenda, does it? I waited for those who know first had to comment of SA. Here's an idea, try reading U.N., Human rights watch, or Amnesty international reports on the goings on in SA. Unless YOU have lived there, how can you possibly know? I've seen you explain the Vietnam war in other posts, again, If YOU weren't there, YOU don't know.

I know several people from South Africa, they left because of the redistribution of wealth and property, the murders, the rapes, the governments sponsored, systemic killing of White and Indian South Africans. Even Black South Africans are fleeing the country, if you aren't from the right tribe, know the right people, they too are victimized, brutalized raped and murdered at rates that make the worst U.S. areas seem positively tranquil. The African people are extraordinarily superstitious, so the belief that raping white women might cure aids, only justifies their barbarism. Here's an idea, go live there for a while and report back to us how it goes. If they don't kill you stepping off the plane, that is.

So True free747. This is a prime example of how these racists continually justify the actions of Whites, no matter how horrible, with remarks about Blacks being violent. Somehow their violence always has an excuse, an explanation or some extraneous reason that makes their acts of violence less deplorable than the violence done by Blacks.

To talk about crime in South Africa, take a look at the decades of violence the South African Whites perpetrated on the Blacks of that country.

This story is about the arrest of a man on the suspicion that he shot and killed his live-in girlfriend. This particular man is accused of this particular act of violence and right away racists find a way to blame Blacks.

Open your closed minds, look around at the world and see yourselves.

I knew I wouldn't have to read far before the peanut gallery who are judge and jury came out without knowing all the facts.

I know it is an inconveinance for you trolls but let's consider why we have these things before yelling guilty before you know the facts.
