Prosecutor: 'Blade Runner' Pistorius committed 'premeditated' murder of girlfriend

After being arrested and charged with murdering his girlfriend, Olympian Oscar Pistorius cried during his first court appearance Friday. Police say Reeva Steenkamp was shot four times with a pistol that is registered to Pistorius, and Pistorius' agent released a statement saying the murder is 'disputed in the strongest terms.' NBC's Michelle Kosinski reports.

Olympic and Paralympic star Oscar Pistorius sobbed as he appeared in a South African court Friday and was accused of the "premeditated" murder of his girlfriend.

The sprinter -- nicknamed "Blade Runner" because he races wearing carbon-fiber prosthetic blades after he was born without a fibula in both legs – is accused of killing model Reeva Steenkamp at his home in a Pretoria suburb early Thursday.

Pistorius disputes the accusations in "the strongest terms," according to a statement issued following the court appearance which said the runner sent "his deepest sympathies" to Steenkamp's family.

South African police said Thursday that Pistorius and Steenkamp, 30, were the only people in the house at the time of the shooting.

Oscar Pistorius, the superstar athlete who became the first double amputee sprinter to compete in the Olympics, is the sole suspect in the murder of law school graduate and famous South African model Reeva Steenkamp. NBC's Rehema Ellis reports.

Pistorius, 26, arrived at the court about two hours before the hearing that began at about 4:30 a.m. ET Friday.

As the hearing started, Pistorius kept his head down, cried and held his hands to his face. At times, he appeared confused.

"Take it easy. Come, take a seat," Reuters quoted Magistrate Desmond Nair as telling him.

A defense lawyer referred to his client’s “traumatised state of mind.”

Several of Pistorius’ family members were in the courtroom and also appeared emotional; one seemed distraught and others wept.

Prosecutors alleged the Olympic runner had committed "premeditated murder" and he was formally charged.

Pistorius was remanded in custody pending a bail hearing next week. An application by the media for the proceedings to be broadcast was rejected at the start of the hearing.

After the hearing, a statement issued by Pistorius' agent said: "The alleged murder is disputed in the strongest terms." It added:

"Oscar Pistorius has made history as an Olympic and Paralympic sportsman and has been an inspiration to others the world over. He has made it very clear that he would like to send his deepest sympathies to the family of Reeva. He would also like to express his thanks through us today for all the messages of support he has received - but as stated our thoughts and prayers today should be for Reeva and her family - regardless of the circumstances."

Citing a neighbor, the Afrikaans-language Beeld newspaper reported Friday that Pistorius shot his girlfriend four times through a bathroom door. NBC News could not independently verify the report, which was translated by Reuters.

Numerous media outlets reported Thursday that Pistorius may have mistaken the woman for an intruder, but police said neighbors had heard noises before the shots and that there had been previous "domestic" incidents at the house.

The athlete who rose to fame in London last summer as the first amputee runner in the Olympics has reportedly been arrested by South African police after his girlfriend was shot and killed in his home. NBC's Rohit Kachroo reports and NBC sports analyst Ato Boldon talks about the case, calling it an "absolute shock."

'Charming, great guy'
The couple had been dating for several months, and “seemed happy,” Steenkamp’s publicist Sarit Tomlinson told TODAY on Thursday. There was no sign of discord between the two, she said.

Tomlinson said that Pistorius was a “charming, great guy.”

According to her Facebook page, Steenkamp was born in Cape Town, South Africa, and raised in Port Elizabeth.

She earned a law degree at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University before moving to Johannesburg and earning a job as the South African face of cosmetics maker Avon.

Greg Stokell, headmaster of St. Dominic’s Priory school in Port Elizabeth, told South Africa's The Times newspaper that Steenkamp was “a vibrant, friendly, diligent, and motivated student who was popular with and respected by staff and peers alike.”

From an early age, "Reeva had the full support of her parents who encouraged her to maximize her strengths and abilities to achieve her dreams,” Stokell told the paper. “She set high goals for herself in everything she did and she consistently converted opportunities into success.”

A police officer holds a gun that was allegedly used in the shooting of Reeva Steenkamp, Oscar Pistorius' girlfriend.

Steenkamp was featured in men’s magazine FHM in December 2011, and named one of the publication’s 100 Sexiest Women in the World for two years in a row.

Pistorius battled for years to be allowed to compete against able-bodied athletes and was the first double amputee to run in the Olympics.

He qualified for the 400-meter semi-finals and 4 x 400-meter final at the London 2012 Summer Games.

His website highlighted that Pistorius ran in 11 races during the London 2012 Olympics and Paralymics and returned home with "two Paralympic gold medals, Paralympic silver, two world records, a Paralympic record, an Olympic individual semi-final and an Olympic final."

NBC's John Newland, Jason Cumming and Matthew DeLuca, Reuters and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Pistorius, a double amputee born without fibulas in his legs, has trained hard to participate in the Olympics despite having to wear prosthetic legs. NBC's Mary Carillo reports.

They were dating for several months and already there was domestic abuse, which led up to murder. People need to take their safety seriously.... if he/she hurts you and/or threatens you... get out!

"...Pistorius shot his girlfriend four times through a bathroom door..."

He couldn't even look into her eyes as he murdered her, how can you expect such a coward to face cameras, the judge, his family and most of all, his dead girlfriend's family?!

What always seems to get me is that when news like this involves a sports figure, the media always has to start reporting their stats and achievements towards the end of the story, like that all matters or maybe it makes up for their crime - ya, he did kill someone, but look at what a great and heroic athlete he was! Maybe we should just let him off the hook or at least be lenient on him.

@JK- Why? Because she was clearly a good and decent person, who looked beyond mere phyiscal things -- and was twice the human being you have shown yourself to be here! To everyone else -- I was shocked to learn of this tragic event. From th little I had seen and knew of both of them --they both sems like nice, decent, attractive and inspirational people --both tryig achieve good things in their chosen fields and make a difference in the world in general. Then this happens. Just shows you "never know" what might really be going on in people's personal lives, behind closed doors -- -- I certainly hope the full and honest truth comes out and that justice is serviced in the end.

Industrial - wow, blaming the victim. I'm sure any real man out there would have put up with anything she dished out, she looked amazing and had her own lucrative modelling career and was well educated. She was not bootstrapping this athlete nobody heard of before last year's Olympics (which many still agree he should never have competed in the first place).

On another note, If the neighbors heard some kind of arguing earlier, sounds to me that she went into the bathroom to get away from him and he simply shot her through the door. That is, "If" shooting her through the door is true.

You guys know as well as I do that if you think someone broke into your house and they're in the bathroom, the "last" thing you would do is start shooting through the door until you at least know it's a burglar and not any other person.

So, you know we'd call 911 and stand just to the side outside of the door and call into the bathroom saying "I have a gun and the police are on their way" stay in there or I'll shoot!!!

Seems this guy is guilty as hell man...

Agreed. One of the rules of responsible gun ownership is not only to clearly identify at what (or whom) you are shooting, but also what (or whom) else is in the line of fire.

If he shot through the door of a bathroom which does not lead through an outside window to the exterior of the house he is a cooked goose and should get the book thrown at him. If it is true the neighbors heard fighting before it happened that may cook him. Four shots is hate filled if you are shooting at someone you know. We can speculate all we want we just have to wait for the real evidence to come out. Cops can see by most scenes what transpired.

"Innocent until proven guilty" means that he cannot be incarcerated without a proper trial - it doesn't mean we are idiots and have to believe someone is "innocent" until after the verdict, despite what the evidence indicates. They were the only two in the house- I'm sure they did a GSR, and the neighbors heard "sounds" (probably too polite to say he was beating her again) - and I've lived long enough to have seen this situation many, many times. This guy is perpetually pi**ed off because of his disability, I can see it in his eyes, the anger and resentment, and whatever happened, she likely had some good news in her career, and he was afraid of losing her as she moved up the ladder - so, he destroyed her.

Another typical sociopath. One of the identifying signs of most socio's is that they are charming and good looking and very manipulating and they try to fool everyone around them. But watch out what happens behind closed doors. He is just another coward that should have shot himself and left the innocent one alive. I recommend a great book: The Sociopath Next Door. You will recognize all the signs and then be able to stay away from these nutcases. And there are a lot of them out there.

Some of these posts are pretty mean-spirited. Why are you calling him a half-man? It is not the physical appearance that makes a person. It is his soul, his spirit, his mind, his personality that makes a person. I don't know if he is guilty or not because I was not there. But regardless, some of you are showing your lack of intelligence by saying such mean things about him or about any person with a physical disability.

Shots through the bathroom door....who says that he was not the one inside the bathroom and shot out of it when he heard noises. That would go well with his story. However, if he was outside and shot into the bathroom through the door, he'd be hard pressed for an explanation. The headline says "premeditated". Either the press is wrong or the police knows more than they are telling. To determine premeditation you have to have something pretty substantial to go on. Either way, people have to wait it out until a final verdict has been made in court. Could go the way of O.J. though. Who knows right now.

People should not idolize Sports Stars--This one, Pistorious, was another serial Abuser to women, then the ultimate end, murder--Yes, Innocent, before proven guilty--?

Many Professional/Olympic Athletes have underlying mental problems, much like Star Celebrites---notice all the abuse, murders from our own Big League Players in he United States recently. It's the WIN at all costs that counts, not the personal background of the Team Player.-----

Teach your kids, Professional Athletes are just "people" doing their job for their entertainment. There is a lot of money in their Sport for themselves, and future Ad Endorsements--they don't deserve it.

This story makes me very sad for many reasons. No doubt there are a lot of complicated human issues behind all of it. I'll hold my full judgment until more information is released, since it's very hard to make a sound judgment based solely on initial press releases especially when you don't know the people involved. It seems that sometimes people tend to make judgments based more on their own experiences than on what information is actually presented in these cases-also that sometimes a case seems to look a certain way at the beginning but that as more information comes out we find out that in reality things were quite different (or at least the press presents it that way). I'm not saying that is true in this case, just that it has happened in the past.

In my opinion it's quite all right for people to state their opinions about this-that's what this forum is for. I'm just choosing not to decide anything about what happened since I wasn't there and I'm not sure I have enough info to decide-only that the whole thing is very tragic and that it makes me very sad. As a physical therapist, I was really cheering for Pistorius and very happy for all his accomplishments on behalf of all people who are disabled. The thing is that human beings are very complicated-we all are. Pistorius could be a very accomplished Olympic athlete AND a killer at the same time. His athletic awards would still be what they are, but his murder would still be murder. No one knows all there is to know about any of us-the human experience is not all black or white, and that's what's scary. If people were all either strictly villains or heroes, I think we would all feel safer-but they aren't, WE aren't. We want to shove people into those categories, but they rarely fit neatly into one or the other. We'd like to fit into the best category, obviously, but we don't always fit either. It's that tension and that dichotomy that has shaped human history. I don't think I really look forward to finding out more about this-it will likely be a terrible story from start to finish.

I'm going to wait and get all the facts before I say "he's innocent" or "he's guilty".

Honestly though, this is the first time I have heard of this tragedy. I feel bad for her family regardless of the outcome.

I don't know whether or not there was domestic abuse, again I lack enough info to draw a definitive conclusion and this could change when the info becomes available, but if there was: I hope it comes out in the wash. Nobody deserves abuse and nobody gets my respect if they do.

I find it rather amazing how many people don't understand that justice in other countries, as well as burden of proof, etc is just not the same as here in America. The South African justice system is not the same as ours. They have different rules, punishment, etc. This will be an interesting case to follow.

Jokes aside. I was wondering how he could shoot her through a bathroom door with such precision, they don't usually come with glass panes so that one could see inside. But the article makes no mention of how many shots were fired.

          @mmm mmmm beer,

just because someone looks amazing, has a lucrative career and is well educated doesn't mean one can live in the long term with anything the other chooses to "dish out". to survive, relationships must have some semblance of balance.

and when that kind of relationship becomes unlivable as it will inevitably become, you go your separate ways like mature adults. it's just that simple. painful, but simple.

i believe when your ego tends to tell you that you own others, and they owe you, then you have the outcome that we see with oscar.

After all, despite her law degree, Steenkamp seemed to be pursuing fame fairly eagerly, even appearing in a "men's magazine" in 2011. No one knows what goes on between two people behind closed doors. I believe in fully vetted gun ownership, but it's not a good thing to have one so handy at such times. Who would have expected someone like Pistorius to snap in this way?

We like to have heroes and most of the mass-media is so in love with ideas of heroes that doesn't present the facts for us to see. Worse, people now follow all kind of celebrities on Twitter and Facebook and believe what they are told so easily!
In this case, why people called Pistorius a hero? What did he do to qualify for that status? Yes, he was an inspiration for people with disabilities, but his efforts and achievements were manly to helping himself. And yes, it may sound bad, but in the end he wasn't the great personality that media made him to be, and now we find things about him that show he wasn't that nice of a person, even at the Olympics. It is not probably nice to say the he should have been lowered his standards but the implications of a relationship between these two people should have been carefully weighted out, especially by her. If he wasn't made into the celebrity everyone knew, their paths would never have crossed. In the end this is just a sad story, like many others, happening at times in the world.

With all due respect Bambi, you have no idea what you're talking about. Other than showing what a shallow idiot you are, the guy is SA's most well known (and before this, well loved) athletes. He gave inspirational lectures, used in posters worldwide for T&F, the Olympics and World Championships. Made history in the London Olympics and left with a standing ovation. No one's heard of his gf outside of SA. The news sites had to get her info from her FB page. He has more notoriety than her, more money than her, more endorsements than her. If we were to look at things from your point of you, you're right, they weren't compatible, she was out of his league.

I needed to point that out to show how ridiculous your statement was. If you don't know anything about the subject matter, do a little research before making such asinine comments. That being said, a bright beautiful woman has just died a horrible and tragic death. Try to keep it on point.

And never, I repeat, NEVER procreate. Until then STFU.

the guy wanted to be on top. he should have go for someone that is more a bit lower than his former on. knowing that things might change cos that girl was beautiful enough to hang out the most able man with fat pocket. only some months or six months. what kind of useless love is that?

Bambi, I hope you've lowered your standards, and found a person with half-a-brain whose English skills are as bad as yours. You don't deserve anyone with a full brain.

                    True, but:

Pistorius battled for years to be allowed to compete against able-bodied athletes and was the first double amputee to run in the Olympics.

He qualified for the 400-meter semi-finals and 4 x 400-meter final at the London 2012 Summer Games.

His website highlighted that Pistorius ran in 11 races during the London 2012 Olympics and Paralymics and returned home with "two Paralympic gold medals, Paralympic silver, two world records, a Paralympic record, an Olympic individual semi-final and an Olympic final."

Shouldn't all of that count for something? Shouldn't he receive a lesser judgement from the courts because of all of his accomplishments? He's not a regular guy like most of us who would and obviously deserve the full penalty of the law. He's one of the elite, celebrities, rich and famous who have earned the right to not be judged the same as the rest of us. I mean, ya, he's not a football quarterback who could get away with murder more easily, but his sports record deserves something, right?

looks like he's guilty but all the evidence needs to come out first, but if he is, he should be convicted and serve the rest of his life in prison no matter who he was or what he has accomplished, after all he took the life of a young woman with her whole life ahead of her, who had accomplished much in her short life.

These people put themselves out there to be an inspiration to others and then can't seem to understand that responsibility. What a waste!

That's good Jonboy. That's American. Is he presumed innocent in South Africa? This including the information in other articles, does sort of look like he isn't going to prove he is innocent.

Same here, Jonboy. South Africa is one of the most violent and murder-happy nations on earth, and their criminal justice system is about as corrupt as they come in developed nations. I'm betting that there's a lot we haven't been told (and I'm even questioning what we have been told - the info we have thus far argues against premeditation), so I'm not making any judgments just yet.

I'm not fully convinced that it was premeditated or even murder. How many people who PLAN to kill another person sob hysterically in court? Then again, he could just be a good actor. Either way, what a sad situation.

Reason it's premeditated is, she was behind a bathroom door. When he went to get his gun he planned to use it. And he did.

You can commit premeditated murder and sob in court. Maybe he realizes he threw away his life, maybe he regrets what he did or maybe he is a good actor.

Also, remember, its a different system and they may have very different standards on murder, premeditation and the level of evidence to prove something.

I believe the SA courts are based on the Dutch system and I do not know if it is guilty til you prove innocence or the other way around. I know they have a tiered system that resembles the US court system for the appeals process but as for matters like this I have no idea how a person accused is thought of.

                          #8.6 - Fri Feb 15, 2013 10:55 AM EST

Crimminal law is British based as is U.S. law. I would think this would be innocent until proven guilty.

Im having a real hard time believing his story. Shot 4 times, that doesn't sound like an accident. That's someone who is angry and wants to make sure. As for premeditated, naaaa. I think they fought, he was enraged, so he grabbed his gun and shot her repeatedly. If it was premeditated, he wouldn't have done it there where his neighbors could hear. This has "angry" written all over it.

There is no excuse or justification for domestic violence. And certainly not murder. If hes found guilty, I hope he never gets out, ever.

PS: If it was an accident, and he thought it was an intruder, he should still be charged with manslaughter. And regardless, hes an idiot who shouldnt have a gun, no matter what the truth here is. A walking hazard.

I think it would be safe to assume she locked herself in the bathroom to escape an act of physical violence, she wouldn't open the door, hence the lead knocking. His next excuse his scumbag lawyer will be the diarrhea conundrum. There was no accident/intruder.

Premeditation can be one second before he killed her. It doesn't have to be days or hours. It sounds like she was in the bathroom to try to get away from him and he went and got his handgun. If he shot the door open and then went into the bathroom to shoot her - if it wasn't that bullets that he shot THROUGH the door hit her - then they may prove premeditation.

I want to believe that he thought it was an intruder but, I don't know of any instances where someone breaks into your house and takes time to use the bathroom.

I don't recall the media saying what side of the bathroom door he was on. Was he in the bathroom and shot out or was he in the bathroom shooting out? Either way he must have squeezed that trigger pretty quick to hit a person on the other side of a door 4 times before that person hit the floor.

Art D enough of your silly jokes. At this stage we can determine this to be Cold Blooded murder. The police responded to a call by neighbors so he was going to try hide the body. This is sick. Being wealthy is not equal being a model citizen.

There is no way he could've thought she was an intruder because they were heard arguing at 2am by neighbors.

I believe he has a small pecker. During their argument she mentioned his tiny pecker and the fact the he ain't got no legs. He lost it, HOOK LINE AND SINKER!!!!!!!!!!!!!

DjKayslay, how, at this stage could you honestly conclude it was cold blooded murder? I can think up numerous different scenarios where it could have been an accident. I dont know how they plan to prove premeditation. I cant even see a motive, beyond verbal abuse from her to him, or infidelity. Neither of which have come up yet. I would, at this point, call it a crime of passion, or an accident.

Maybe just maybe, what he says is true. Maybe he's covering his face because the world was looking and most men don't want to be seen crying. I find it interesting that she was tweeting about how excited she was about Valentines day and yet everyone thinks that he meant to kill her. Obviously she was not afraid. Yes there may have been domestic disturbances, but who knows, maybe that was just a loud shouting match and nosey neighbors called. Haven't we all had a shouting match or two? I find it disgusting that previous comments like she shouldn't have been with him because he was disabled and she was beautiful. THAT kind of thinking right there in my opinion, is part of what is wrong with OUR country. My daughter was murdered by her boyfriend at the age of 22 and if ( I )can say...."maybe"......I think you people that are just trying to get a laugh on here....are pitiful. If indeed he is guilty, ok take your punishment young man ~ but ( what if )?

I agree. Maybe he knows, no matter what he says, people will condemn him. I feel bad for the guy at this point, but will quickly cease too, should evidence prove him guilty.

A lot of this makes no sense. Why would he shoot her like that, especially considering their rocky relationship, and history of police visits to their home. He would certainly know that he would immediately be suspect number one.

They mention prior police visits for domestic violence, yet site no arrests, or injuries, or who was the abused, or being abused. They dont even say who made the calls.

There has been no release of where she was shot, both on her body, or where in the home.

His hysteria, and general reaction to all this seems right on for someone who is innocent of murder, but will be hard pressed to prove it.

I shall withhold my judgements until further evidence has been presented.

Just like we all have the capacity to steal, lie , commit adultery and so on the rest of the commandments. Any one who says they are not accountable will do all of them wrong and they do. Capital Hill is full of hypocrites. We all know that the high powers in the world commit most if not all of these commandments and they do it without regard of the people of the USA and the world but most important they do it against God. Don't care if the God haters don't like what I say but it still is the truth. Not because I say so. God says so.
