16 injured as Palestinians clash with Israeli troops

Palestinians throw rocks during clashes with Israeli troops outside Ofer military prison near the West Bank city of Ramallah on Friday. At least 16 people were injured as Israeli forces fired into the air and used rubber bullets.

JERUSALEM -- Palestinian protesters clashed with Israeli soldiers on Friday at a rally outside an Israeli prison in the occupied West Bank.

Palestinian medical officials said two protesters were wounded by live gunfire in the demonstration, which was mounted as a show of solidarity with Palestinians being held in the nearby Ofer prison.

Mohammed Ballas / AP

Israeli security forces fire tear gas Friday north of the West Bank city of Jenin during a Palestinian rally in support of Palestinian prisoners on hunger strike in Israeli jails.

A crowd of about 300 Palestinians threw stones at troops, who used riot dispersal equipment to break up the protest, an Israeli military spokeswoman said.

"The soldiers, feeling immediate danger, fired in the air," she said. "The incident is being reviewed."

Palestinian medical officials said tear gas, stun grenades and rubber bullets were fired into the crowd, and 14 people were injured by rubber bullets.

Nearly 5,000 Palestinians are held in Israeli jails, many charged with involvement in attacks on Israelis.

And the Palestinians will try and spin this as the evil Israelis attacking Palestinians without provocation. They do not see throwing rocks and bottles at soldiers as being provocation. Also, they were not just "throwing" rocks. The sling that the one protester is using is extremely deadly, even if it is just loaded with rocks. Those things can launch rocks at hundreds of miles an hour at someone and it far more deadly than simply throwing rocks with your hands. Maybe the Israelis should stop with the non-lethal responses and rubber bullets and start using real ammo. Then maybe these animals would think twice before "throwing" rocks at soldiers.

You were so close to making a valid argument, then you referred to an entire population as "animals." Why? Seriously, I'm curious. It derails your entire point, does nothing to aid productive discussion and makes you look ignorant to boot.

Amy - what do you think the rocks are intended for?

I personally don't think they are intended for cuddling.

More like the following:

Cause Pain or Injury

Provoke Violent Retaliation causing world sympathy

Kill.

If we all stood in front of a crowd of people who threw rocks at us, we may question the humanity of our assailants also.

Can i assume that you are American?

(I am as well)

If we take the example of Martin Luther King Jr... he realized that violence creates more violence. If only the Palestinians would realize this as a whole group, and not just parts of them (which i respect them for)

You cheering them on for turning a peaceful protest (which they are within their rights to do) into a violent one does not help the situation.

Have you ever had rocks thrown at you?

This happens often, as Israel has been too patient with rock throwing and rocket attacking Palestinians.

""The soldiers, feeling immediate danger, fired in the air," she said. "The incident is being reviewed.""

Instead of bothering about Shiites vs Sunni battles in Syria; deciding winners between Saddam and Sunni barbaric and bigoted despotic rulers like House of Saud, Kuwait, Qatar and others and blowing out of proportions on Iranian nukes (which are going to be useless. If Iranians buy Paki nukes, they will be more dangerous), Israel should once for all clean up Palestinians and Hezbollah.

One can't live side by side with such one-way traffic Islamic nuts.

Also no more of our tax monies to "buy" Palestinians.

Let liabilities on earth, oil rich Sunni rulers and sheikhs bother about them.

I am an American who lived in Nablus, Palestine working with the refugee population. I respect your beliefs and yes, in an ideal world, nonviolence would be a lovely solution. I'm not condoning their behavior, but I get so unbelievably tired of reading these articles and seeing the Palestinians referred to as somehow less than human.

Have you spent any time in Nablus, Hebron or anywhere else in the occupied West Bank? People are herded like cattle through checkpoints, kicked out of their homes which are later bulldozed to make room for settlements and prevented from achieving economic security because they lack any kind of meaningful mobility. Until you understand the nuances of the conflict (which it appears you don't, entirely) then it's not as easy as violence=bad, nonviolence=good.

Even if you served in the IDF, it's not the same. Spend some time there as a civilian without an automatic weapon and the support of the most powerful military on Earth, then you might truly see what it means to be pushed to true desperation. Maybe you'll be willing to see the situation for the complicated mess it truly is.

I understand more than you would think.

What is the reason for the checkpoints? Or the wall?

Perhaps you are familiar with the intifada(s)... or people who strap bombs with shrapnel on their person and detonate in civilian areas?

There has been violence ever since the Arab nations rejected the notion of the re-founding of Israel. (and before really)

Years of violence. The Palestinian drive towards non violence has been around for far less, and to be honest... has brought them closer towards statehood than decades of violence.

I don't know how anyone can feel sorry for the Palestinians. They do nothing but bother Israeli soldiers all day every day, always trying to cause a fight. I don't think they want peace. Wouldn't it be amazing if they spent their time trying to improve what they have instead. Maybe it would be nice if they even payed taxes. Now there's an Idea! They might actually get somewhere if they behaved more like modern humans and less like primitive animals.

The palestinians live like they do because they refuse to comply with past agreements to make peace. Both Japan and Germany went thru this after 1945. But they lay down arms and kept to the peace terms they agreed to. The arabs fought 4 more major conflits and hundreds of smaller ones all the time refusing peace. The palestinians kept fighting and blowing themselves and others up long after they two biggest supporters Eypgt and Jordan made peace.

The only way peace is going to happen is when the Palestinians themselves clean house of those that would stop peace. There is not a single thing Isarel can do to bring peace as long as there are palestinians that will not give up a 60 year old lost cause and the mainstream Palestinians refuse to weed them out.

Israel belonged to Jews and so they have a right to be there.

Once Jews made that region prosperous, Muslims from neighboring areas flocked in there as usual.

Now these Muslims are back to their business: this area belongs to us; you leave; if you don't leave, we will kill; and on on.

In between they act as victims and go for deals and pacts to take a break from their normal business of telling lies, trying to fool, act as saints, raping, stealing, kidnapping, hating, killing, looting and genocides when in majority.

Since the birth of Islamic cult, these followers have never kept a word, deal, or pact.

We, non-Muslims, and females should declare: enough is enough and we are not going to tolerate any more your craps!

If you think throwing rocks is pretty harmless, consider that a practiced slinger can throw a 2 ounce stone nearly 400 yards. That means the stone comes off the sling with enough force to crush bone (your skull, an arm, a leg, ribs) and you never hear it coming. Slings are used to throw grenades over high walls and even to hunt in some countries. Slings have been used as offensive weapons in the Middle East for centuries, so standing in front of a slinger is about the same as facing down a gunman, except a gun can fire another projectile much quicker. Rock throwers can be deadly, and that is usually their expectation. They're not out there to merely annoy and antagonize.

I am sure you would, but you still wouldn't like it if the guys with the slings outnumbered you ten to one, plus for you actually killing one of them would mean jail, while for the killing you would mean reward.

And one more detail, the guy with sling is allowed to walk away and not fight if he wants, but the guy with the gun does not get a say, if he tries to walk away, a rock will hit the back of his head.

If I am an israeli and kill one of them, I will get only a slap on the wrist and set from by my court of law.

I am unlikely to be killed by the sling shot as I have full body armour, helmet and shield. My attackers will be labeled as terrorists and their houses will be bulldozed and theri family members systematicly harassed and killed or put in jail if resisted.

Basic rule of law found in just about every judical system on the planet. If you are commit assult and are injuried or killed as a result than you don't have leagl leg to stand on. IF a American throws a rock at a American police man and gets hurt or killed when the officer defend himself no charges would be filed. The amount of body armor the cop is wearing has no effect on the legality of the assult. The crime remains the same.

Israel should build a complete a wall around itself according to its own parameters and declare everything on the other side Palestine. They should cut off electricity, medical assistance and sharply curtail employment for the Palestinians. Enough with these fools and good riddance.

As usual, most of you completely MISSED the point or are trying on purpose to defame and detract (which is a typical jewish attack method).

The Palestinians (TEENAGERS) throw rocks out of sheer frustration and to show the world the symbolism of RESISTANCE. But of course, as typical americans (supporting israel blindly), you people concentrate on guns vs. rocks and the 2 dimensional trivial OBVIOUS and completely missed the point.

These teenagers are normally not allowed by their parents to throw rocks or participate in fighting israeli offensive forces because most parents don't want their kids SHOT to death on the streets. But these kids go out and do it anyway. And you diots can't see why ????

Most of you including the guy shamelessly calling himself jew101 keep stabbing away at honorable oppressed people who are worth far more than most of you ARE as human beings. These kids represent the highest ideals of freedom fighting while most of you are porn loving couch potatoes hurling insults at an entire people collectively and only showing yourselves as the poor excuses of human beings that you are.

If only the Palestinians knew what morons most of us are they would start hating americans too. The irony is that they don't !!!! AND THEY SHOULD !!!!!!

Finally, if anyone dares attack me personally, You can expect personal insults back IMMEDIATELY. If you profess to be an intellectual, ADDRESS MY POINT and don't stoop to being jewish and israeli and just call me names.

I wasnt aware that we Jews had "attack methods."

And name calling isn't a "Jewish" or "Israeli" creation. So you would be highly offended at being insulted, yet have seemingly no problem insulting others?

There are better ways of letting off frustration other than throwing rocks (i am shocked no molotov cocktails were reported this time), which as history shows... can be lethal... especially when amplified via a sling.

The Palestinian cause is better fought with methods of Non Violence. It is also better fought with leaders on both sides that are willing to actually negotiate.

If you notice from the article... rubber bullets were used, along with tear gas to disperse a protest that became violent. If the protest did not resort to violence, the protest would have been allowed to continue.

                    No death.

The Palestinians themselves have to cut the cancer out. Hamas, Hezzballh and dozen of other cancers eat them everyday killing the deam of peace. Israel has abandoned any moral authority. That will end badly for them. It always does when a people abandons the moral authority. Look again, and we now see two anti-Israel media stories on the main pages of NBC.

Nothing about the Bulgarian report that blames Hesb'Allah in Lebanon (a wholly-owned subsidiary of Syr-Iran corporation) for the brutal attack in Bulgaria last year:

                    http://www.cnn.com/2012/07/18/world/europe/bulgaria-israel-blast

this attack on a tourist bus killed six and wounded 32.

Now, the European Union is considering the classification of Hezbollah as a terrorist organization.

                    http://articles.washingtonpost.com/2013-02-05/opinions/36762850_1_hezbollah-lebanese-government-iranian-nuclear-scientists

                    .

I would love to know why NBC doesn't have this question up for debate in the headlines?
