Blade Runner's uncle: Pistorius 'numb with shock'

Denis Farrell / AP

Arnold Pistorius, right, uncle of Olympic athlete Oscar Pistorius, comforts his niece after making a statement to selected press in Pretoria, South Africa, Feb. 16, 2013.

The uncle of Paralympic athlete Oscar Pistorius said Saturday that the runner, who overcame physical disabilities to become a national icon in his native South Africa, was “numb with shock, as well as grief” after the shooting death of model girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.

Prosecutors on Friday accused Pistorius of the “premeditated” murder of his girlfriend.

“As you can imagine, our entire family is devastated, we are in a state of total shock – firstly about the tragic death of Reeva who we had all got to know well and care for deeply over the last few months,” Arnold Pistorius said on Saturday, speaking to reporters at his home in Pretoria. The statement was later released by Pistorius’ agent.

“All of us saw at firsthand how close she had become to Oscar during that time and how happy they were,” the uncle said in the family’s first on-camera, in-person statement since the incident. “They had plans together and Oscar was happier in his private life than he had been for a long time.”

Prosecutor: 'Blade Runner' Pistorius committed 'premeditated' murder of girlfriend

The family “strongly refutes” any charges of murder against Pistorius, his uncle said. “We have no doubt there is no substance to the allegations and that the state’s own case, including its own forensic evidence, strongly refutes any possibility of a premeditated murder or indeed any murder at all.”

An emotional Pistorius, 26, appeared in court on Friday accompanied by several family members. He at times appeared confused and sobbed during the hearing.

“Take it easy. Come, take a seat,” Magistrate Desmond Nair told the athlete, who was born without a fibula in both legs, according to Reuters.

Reeva Steenkamp was model, budding TV star

Pistorius was formally charged on Friday, and is slated to appear for a bail hearing next week. The court rejected an application by the media to broadcast the proceedings.

The charges were “disputed in the strongest terms,” a statement released by Pistorius’ agent after the hearing read: “[Pistorius] has made it very clear that he would like to send his deepest sympathies to the family of Reeva. He would also like to express his thanks through us today for all the messages of support he has received – but as stated our thoughts and prayers today should be for Reeva and her family – regardless of the circumstances of this terrible, terrible tragedy."

Steenkamp, a model, law graduate, and aspiring television star, was found dead on Valentine’s Day of gunshot wounds in Pistorius’ home in a gated community. The model, 30, was shot four times, and authorities told the Associated Press that a 9mm pistol was recovered at the residence.

Speaking on NBC’s TODAY earlier this week, Steenkamp’s publicist described the incident as a “huge loss for everyone and too shocking for words.”

A reality island TV show featuring the deceased girlfriend of Paralympian Oscar Pistorius aired Saturday in South Africa, just days after the model and budding television personality's death. Pistorius' uncle said the runner was "numb with shock." NBC's Michelle Kosinski reports.

Riiigggghhhhtttt! The spoiled kid who is use to being coddled finally gets real treatment for crimes he perpetrated. An innocent woman killed, and he is numb! I am numb from all of the media coddling stars and anyone they deem challenged. This guy is only challenged by his inability to get off.

There had supposedly been police involvement with him in the past concerning domestic violence. Wonder if steroids had anything to do with possible rage issues? Just proves that you should never put a man on a pedestal (or woman)

Every report released thus far points to Oscar, 'Blade Runner, Pistorius! The clues are pivotal, previously reported bouts of domestic violence, loud noises or arguing heard earlier the night of the shooting, extreme remorse by Mr. Pistorius. My guess is drugs and/or alcohol were involved. Temper(s) got completely out of control and the easily access of a lethal weapon, a 9mm semiautomatic pistol. No accident! She was shot in the head four times! Perhaps this will alert and alarm those who claim that a gun in a home is for protection from an intrude. Deadly results happen daily in the U.S. to owners of guns in their homes. An available gun mixed with drugs/alcohol and a lose of temper(s) may, and certainly does often, result in the murder of a loved one, and is regreted for the balance of the shooters life. I hope and pray, against long odds, that I am dead wrong in speculating on this tragedy.

@scrambolo - You are absolutely correct about mixing guns in the home with alcohol or violent personalities. That's why I know I should never be a gun owner. I don't drink or do drugs and I'm not violent, but I do have an anger problem, especially when driving. I KNOW if I ever owned a gun, I would at least use it to blow someone's tires out. People have to know their own limitations and be honest with themselves. I know my personality and guns would not mix, so I refuse to even consider owning a gun, it's not worth it. I wish more gun owners were as honest with themselves.

This woman who had so much to offer Society, killed by another deranged murderer with a gun.

Are they any people out there we haven't heard from that can be responsible owning a gun. It would not matter, because Pistorius was hell-bent on killing her---even if it was done in a different way; choking, smothering, knife---all weapons of the hands.

Numb. I'll bet he doesn't know what "Numb" means when someone is no longer alive taken by violence.

His reaction does not seem typical though. Although it appears fairly certain he did it the biggest question is why and is there any underlying medical condition which caused him to "go off". Steroids have been mentioned but doubt that is case as he would have been thoroughly tested. Perhaps some other form of illness like a brain tumour or psychosis triggered by argument.

I agree - although he seemed to overcome his physical handicap, maybe deep inside he has an underlying problem dealing with it, his fame and fortune. He may not be the person he appears to be outwardly but an entirely different person keeping this frustration, whatever, inside. The sad thing is we may never know what caused this horrible tragedy. My sympathy to Reeva's family and friends and hopefully authorities will find the answer to this horrible situation.

The police however know his home as they were called to it on previous occasions. Maybe not your typical thug, but a young guy with anger issues? All I know is that I'm getting a bit sick and tired of hearing his families statements, as they use the media to blanket the case with an impression of his innocence, and this being an accident. The security/police had been at the home two hours earlier - are we to believe he forgot is girlfriend was in the house? It all sounds like someone who couldn't let something go, who kept on arguing until his girlfriend went into the bathroom to get away from it, and he shot her through the door. His doggedness at the Olympics in getting the rules bent so he could compete, followed by his complaints of cheating after he was beaten, all sound like someone who things he's owed something. I didn't like his antics at the Olympics and now I dislike him even more. Enough of is families comments already - what about hearing from Reeva's family on how "innocent" they think he is....

People always have to come up with some other reason for why they did something so they don't have to take responsibility for their actions. A brain tumor made me gamble away a billion dollars, it's not my fault. If it was steroids, then he took them on his own and is responsible for all of his actions that followed. It's the same people who drive drunk and then kill someone, they did the drinking knowing they would sooner or later have to find their way home. Instead of arranging for a cab or other means of transportation before they took that first drink, they made the decision to drive home drunk. I absolutely believe that there should be a minimum penalty of 10 years in jail for a death committed by a drunk driver as with other deaths people commit after taking drugs or whatever. They made their own choice to do so, they should pay the price for all actions that follow - they were in their right minds when they began!

He was going through massive heartbreak. If the gun was not there, he might would have had time to think it over, and let it pass. But, the gun was there, rage was there, he pulled the trigger. Oh yes, if he could go back, now that he has time to see all the wrong he has done, he would undo his wrong. But, that can't happen, and a lovely young lady is gone. He has to pay the piper..

Who knows what he might have been taking: testosterone, HGH, other steroids... those drugs can make men aggressive and emotionally unstable.

Neighbors heard an argument prior to the shooting, and reportedly the police had been called to his home before to settle a domestic dispute.

I do own all of the above and no I am not unhinged and have never been arrested for anything. You on the other hand are so naive that you believe that limiting the ability of law abiding citizens to own guns will stop violent crime, it won't. It always starts with mild limits and then it grows. Check out Canada's current gun control. There will always be criminals and there will always be violent crime, check your history books. The second ammendment was put in place to protect us from our own government and the tyranny that comes. The only reason that the current countrys that have gun bans are free is because they are our allys and we are still the most powerful military in the world. When Obozo get's done we won't be and then what will keep your naive a$$ free.... the fact that all of us own guns. Check the history of tyrants, they get control of your helath care, and then your weapons, and then they do whatever they wish. Check out Hitler, or Stalin, the list goes on and on.

If someone is angry enough to kill, a gun isn't necessary. There are many people dead from being beaten or stabbed. It's easy to immediately jump to the fact that a gun was there is the root cause, that's not always the case.

I also would like to say to all that take this forum as an opportunity to "name-call", STOP being so silly! State your facts & leave it at that. Telling someone they are an idiot, doesn't make you right!

I have a slogan, but it sucks compared to the pro gun slogans. But, here it is anyway, "make sure that no one kills you with your own gun".

Or, how about, "Don't let your children get your gun, because one of them might get killed by accident".

Wait, here's one more, "If you own a gun, don't use it to kill yourself if you feel sad.".

OK, OK, last one, "make sure no one steals your gun".

Ever tried to kill someone before? Its not an easy thing to do at very close range with your hands, a knife, blunt object, against a person who is fighting back with their life at stake.

Most people cannot do it. But when you can just pull out a gun, squeeze the trigger and run off to safety. Very different story.

Its such a whimsical argument to suggest people murdered with guns would have been murdered anyway with another instrument. The numbers simply do not support that claim. Not to mention a huge majority of gun deaths are accidental. When dangerous things are around, dangerous things happen. Snake owners always get bit eventually.

You can't deny that it is easier to shoot someone than to stab them with a knife, club them with a hammer, and so on. Why, you don't even have to get your hands dirty to shoot someone. And, you can shoot them through a closed door and not even have to see the agony when the bullet hits them. Yes, a nut case is still a nut case, but it's still too easy for anger to end in someone's death where guns are concerned.

Yes, he could have killed her with a knife, but he'd have to see her face that way and *feel* the knife go into her body. Easier and more cowardly with a gun. Makes it easier to kill on impulse. Also easier when you have no lower legs....not to be crass....but it does.

Well, I am not surprised at all, given that the white south africans have a long history of being violent, usually towards blacks, so now they are beginning to reap what they have sown.

Maybe InSouth Africa, they can legitimately inprison him..forever. I don't care about his "handicap" since it was never an issue before, it should not be a defense now. MURDER..is murder, no matter who commits it; unless you are in America and are rich and famous.

There is really only one thing that would make a man kill the woman he loves -- she most probably was leaving him and he laid in wait and shot her. Who knows what evils lurk in those expensive digs behind those gated walls -- especially in South Africa where most everyone is armed to the hilt. I'll wait for the facts to come out, but personally I think he's guilty as charged.

Wow! There are certainly a lot of experts on subjects like psychology, human relationships, steroids, brain tumors etc etc etc. I doubt that any of us have the expertise to make any suggestion as to what happened here. The reality is that yet another celebrity is in the midst of a horrendous mess and a young woman is dead. All of us want an answer to our questions but instead of waiting for those to evolve in the investigations, we speculate wildly and then decide to simply declare that this or that certainly is the explanation. My heart goes out to the victim and the alleged perpetrator and their families because they are in the midst of horror I don't ever want to experience. I also wish the investigators and authorities good fortune since theirs is a very big job with really high stakes on the line.

How these socio's keep fooling people I'll never know. After reading the book, you will never be stuck around one of these people with no conscience again.

Linda, you don't have to be an expert to figure out what likely happened. We may never know the full truth unless Pistorius decides to confess all.

A jury is provided with evidence and then decides guilt or innocence without having ALL the facts.

When a woman is shot four times in the head in the home of her boyfriend, who has a history of domestic violence, the logical conclusion is that he killed her deliberately. The whys and wherefores are known only to him at this point, but speculating on them is the whole point of this comment section.

Unless there has been a revised story, he didn't shoot her all four times in the head. Minor detail perhaps as the result of death was the same but this is how misinformation spreads.

My first series of questions are...why did he shoot her 4 times? What caused him to shoot that many rounds into her body? Was it because he just held on to the trigger for a few seconds? and secondly, why want the NRA realize that guns can not be removed from the discussion about our current issue with reducing gun violence. To suggest that he would have used another weapon to kill her; if no gun was available; is an overused excuse.

First, how can anyone make jokes about this. His birth defect is not funny, his ability to overcome doesn't make him less likely to have other issues. And so far, has anyone heard the entire story. If I had to guess like everyone else here my guess would be drugs are as responsible as the gun. Even something as simple as a sleeping pill can make you do things you might not even remember when it wears off. Google Ambien! Combine that with a handy weapon and you come up with a very sad situation. Let's wait for the entire story. And his birth defect still will not make for funny jokes. Know how I know, a young man I care very much about was born with a similar problem, has walked on a prosthetic since he was a year old, and he is as normal a child as you could ever hope to meet. But the surgery, fittings, learning to walk were anything but funny!

Sounds like he was a nice guy who had some issues with impulsivity and anger. See NYT magazine interview with Sokolove. My guess would be that they fought and she locked herself in the bathroom to get away from him. With his anger, impulsivity, and casual attitude towards guns, he shot at the door not thinking that, of course, she was behind it. Just a theory. Sad that both of their lives are over now.

That's the best theory I've seen here, though just conjecture like anything else--a guy in a rage who says "open the door" and she won't. He can't kick it in, so he fires away. Easy to get mad and thoughtlessly fire at a door because you don't see the consequences of your act at that moment, just a door in your way. Interesting that the uncle now says that the family had come to know and like her so well, when the father said he'd never even met her. Notice also his family put their hands on his shoulder and tried to support him in court but he wouldn't even look at them.

Plus, he seemed to underestimate the seriousness of handling guns. Sounds like he was slinging guns allover his house like they were the plastic toys we used to play with back in the 70's. The whole situation is just so tragic.

It seems pretty insensitive for the family to deny a murder ocurred when the girlfriend was shot 4 times through the bathroom door. The security guard stated that she barracaded herself in the bathroom for protection. It is reported that the police were called by neighbors prior to the shooting due to a loud argument at Oscar's home. Oscar and his girlfriend were the only two people in his home. What kind of family denies the atrocity committed by their own?

                                                You know the kind...

I broke her nose because she wouldn't shut up, or I raped her because she asked for it.

I shot her because she rejected me.

Tongue in cheek, men who own guns such as his should be given a weekly dose of estrogen.
