Iran vows to exact revenge on Israel over killing of commander in Syria

Iranian mourners carry the flag draped coffin of Hassan Shateri in Tehran, Thursday.

DUBAI - Iran will soon exact revenge on Israel for the recent killing of a Revolutionary Guards commander in Syria, an aide to Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was quoted on Saturday as saying.

Iran said on Thursday that an Iranian military commander named Hessam Khoshnevis, also called Hassan Shateri in some news accounts, had been killed in Syria by rebels fighting President Bashar al-Assad, an ally of Tehran.

Syrian rebels accuse Iran's Revolutionary Guard of sending forces to help Assad crush their 22-month-old uprising, a charge denied by the Islamic Republic.

Details of Khoshnevis's killing are sketchy and various accounts have emerged. But Iran's envoy to Beirut Ghazanfar Roknabadi on Thursday drew a link between his killing and Israel.

Ali Shirazi, the representative of Khamenei to the Guards' elite Quds force, said on Friday evening Iran's "resolve against Israel" had only grown stronger with Khoshnevis's killing.

"Our enemies should also know that we will quickly get revenge for (the death of) Haj Hassan (Shateri) from the Israelis, and the enemies cannot shut off the Iranian people with such stupid acts," Shirazi was by the Iranian Students' News Agency (ISNA) on Saturday as saying.

A look back at the conflict that has overtaken the country.

Israel has not commented on the killing.

Israel has hinted at military action against Iran if Tehran continues with a nuclear program which Israel says is aimed at developing a weapon. Iran says its program is peaceful.

Israel is believed to be the Middle East's only nuclear-armed state.

The Revolutionary Guards media office said this week that Khoshnevis had been "martyred on his way from Damascus to Beirut by mercenaries".

The state news agency IRNA said Khoshnevis was a military engineer during the 1980-88 conflict between Iran and Iraq, and had later worked in Afghanistan.

Officials stressed Khoshnevis had been engaged in civilian reconstruction in Lebanon for the last seven years. Iran backs the Lebanese Shi'ite movement Hezbollah, which fought a brief war with Israel seven years ago and allied with Assad.

Khomeini runs the Iranian military and the police. Ahmedinejad only runs the Parliament and has a big mouth. It's the Ayatolah Khomeini you don't want to piss off. He loses face. Funny how they are about that.

I figure they already have them acquired from elsewhere. We just haven't broken the news to anyone yet. I remember 3 years ago even a Congressman publicly stated they had "two." If Israeli's jets were about to fly east over the Persian Gulf towards Iran and we knew Israel was on their way to hit their facilities with nuclear tipped bunker busters, I believe Obama would have them shot down enroute. Just my theory.

Why is it when Israel does something WRONG it gets away with it on the international scene with impunity, but when Iran does something WRONG, it's condemned till the cows come home? Do you know how many innocent people died from Israeli bombs? I don't think God sanctions innocent bloodshed anywhere.

I can't believe how stupid most of you are .... The second or third comment was "wha was he doing in Syria ?" Jeeze do you morons even READ the frikking article before you comment?

The guy was a CIVIL CONSTRUCTION administrator in Lebanon. Wow. How clear is that ? The guy was helping build infrastructure in the south of Lebanon after israel destoryed it in 2006 and he was part of a long standing campaign of support by Iran to the poos shiites in South Lebanon.

If that wasn't humanitarian work then I don't know what is. Iran is certainly doing a lot for Lebanon and certainly MUCH more than the united states which keeps outfitting israel with weapons to be used ON THE LEBANESE.

Soooooooo ... fork you all for saying all these nasty comments and jumping on the "trash all muslims" banwagon. You asswipes are so clearly anti Arab it disgusts me to read your poorly worded and stupidly assembled one liners.

When some of you appear to ATTEMPT something longer than a sentence, iut is CUT and PASTED and just HURLED and DUMPED on this site by zionists which absolutely ASTOUNDS me ... That allegedly astounding asswipe is so clearly a jew and more than likfely one of these stupid israeli posters PAID to camp on american news forums trashing Arabs.

The more you @!$%#s do it, the more it becomes obvious that your zionist azttempt to control the masses will fail. Americans are smarter than you make them out to be. The fact is that the one predominantly doing the insulting with no provocation is you! It seems that all that do not agree with your narrow minded views are are labeled by you as "stupid" or "morons".

Iran will be in the history books sooner or later. The regime change is inevitable. Their liberation is undeniable. And it won't take America to make it happen either. They will eventually do it to themselves. By 2021 we will no longer require their oil for purchase. By 2020 we will become the world largest oil exported our technology is rapidly advancing to electric where we will become self sufficient. And the middle easts economy will plummet into the red sea. They need to stop relying on our dollars with our own blood. Their time is coming real soon. And they will blame America for their financial collapse. Mark my words on this. We don't need them anymore. And other countries are arrogant to believe we require oil or go to war for oil when we simply don't need it. But ignorance will be the epicenter of the Middle Easts soon collapse. And we won't give one rats harry dairy aire.

Details of Khoshnevis's killing are sketchy and various accounts have emerged. But Iran's envoy to Beirut Ghazanfar Roknabadi on Thursday drew a link between his killing and Israel.

So how does this work, exactly? Iran feels entitled to send their military aid, advisers etc. to Syria to takes sides in a civil war. But if Israel is also involved, resulting in the death of one of their Revolutionary Guard commanders, this is an outrage?

I'm not particularly favorable to either side in this apparently endless conflict between Israel and its Muslim neighbors. As Mercutio said in Romeo and Juliet, "A plague a' both your houses!".

But Iran's outrage at the death of one its military, who was plainly taking an active part in an armed conflict, in another country, seems particularly childish.

If you don't want to get burned, stay away from the fire.

The US have no business to be in any of those countries. Why is the US entitled to invade countries and kill anyone in the process?

well, hessy, I don't recall saying the U.S. has any such right, so what precisely what point are you addressing with your remarks?

For the record I was against the Iraq War, and still regard it as a reckless and incompetently conducted endeavor. But I would not say that the U.S. is never justified in involving itself in the affairs of other nations. Certainly the 9/11 attacks demanded some sort of action on our part against Al Qaeda, and Taliban government of Afghanistan, which gave them protection.

I'd further suggest that not all the countries in the Middle East share a common culture. Iran, for instance, is a predominantly Shia Islam nation with a distinctly non-Arab culture, whereas Syria is an Arab nation, predominantly Sunni, but dominated by an Alawite/Shia minority.

Contrary to your statement, the two nations share no borders.

Iran has no more business involving itself in the internal affairs of Syria than does the United States.

What was a High Ranking Iranian doing in Syria? Why would Israel kill an Iranian in Syria when the outcome is a Lose, Lose, if the Rebels win it's a Theocratic Dictatorship like Iran anyway. If Assad wins, it's a close ally of Iran who would support an attack/war on Israel. Either way Israel loses.

Seems like the Iranians have the same tactic as the OBama Adminstration, if the Iranians have a event, Israel did it, if the OBama Adminstration has a Problem/Difficulty/Event/Bobble/Toe Stubbing, Bush did it.
