VATICAN CITY - Pope Benedict asked the faithful to pray for him and for the next pope, addressing a crowded St. Peter's Square in his penultimate Sunday address before becoming the first pontiff in centuries to resign.
The crowd chanted "Long live the pope!," waved banners and broke into sustained applause as he spoke from his window. The 85-year-old Benedict, who will resign on February 28, thanked them in several languages.
Speaking in Spanish, he told the crowd which the Vatican said numbered more than 50,000: "I beg you to continue praying for me and for the next pope".
It was not clear why the pope chose Spanish to make the only specific reference to his upcoming resignation in his Sunday address.
A number of cardinals have said they would be open to the possibility of a pope from the developing world, be it Latin America, Africa or Asia, as opposed to another from Europe, where the Church is crisis and polarized.
After his address, the pope retired into the Vatican's Apostolic Palace for a scheduled, week-long spiritual retreat and will not make any more public appearances until next Sunday.
Pope Benedict delivered a weekly prayer from his balcony just as he has for nearly eight years, but the crowd on Sunday was worthy of a rock star, with thousands of supporters coming out to hear him speak. NBC's Anne Thompson reports.
Speaking in Italian in part of his address about Lent, the period when Christians reflect on their failings and seek guidance in prayer, the pope spoke of the difficulty of making important decisions.
"In decisive moments of life, or, on closer inspection, at every moment in life, we are at a crossroads: do we want to follow the ‘I' or God? The individual interest or the real good, that which is really good?" he said.
Since his shock announcement last Monday, the pope has said several times that he made the difficult decision to become the first pope in more than six centuries to resign for the good of the Church.
The pope has said his physical and spiritual forces are no longer strong enough to sustain him in the job of leading the world's 1.2 billion Roman Catholics at a time of difficulties for the Church in a fast-changing world.
Benedict's papacy was rocked by crises over the sex abuse of children by priests in Europe and the United States, most of which preceded his time in office but came to light during it.
His reign also saw Muslim anger after he compared Islam to violence. Jews were upset over his rehabilitation of a Holocaust denier. During a scandal over the Church's business dealings, his butler was convicted of leaking his private papers.

People in the crowd said the pope was a shadow of the man he was when elected on April 19, 2005.
"Like always, recently, he seemed tired, moved, perplexed, uncertain and insecure," said Stefan Malabar, an Italian in St. Peter's Square.
The Vatican has said the conclave to choose his successor could start earlier than originally expected, giving the Roman Catholic Church a new leader by mid-March.
Some 117 cardinals under the age of 80 will be eligible to enter the secretive conclave to elect Benedict's successor. Church rules say the conclave has to start between 15 and 20 days after the papacy becomes vacant, which it will on February 28.
The pope will say one more Sunday noon prayer on February 24, hold a final general audience on February 27. The next day he will take a helicopter to the papal summer retreat at Castle Gandalf, south of Rome, flying into the history books.

Vatican officials said he would stay there for the two months or so needed to restore the convent inside the Vatican where he will live out his remaining years.

I will suggest if anyone prays it is for the thousands of children who were raped by priests because the Pope failed to stop and even protected them from discovery....
The entire institution, not just this one pope. The church is no different than any other giant corporation. They protect their bottom line -- A large membership willing to tithe. Anything that threatens that is dealt with within the corporation. Public knowledge would derail their business model.

It's a typical Sunday Catholic, Juanita, one who goes to church on Sunday as part of a famly tradition; doesn't follow church doctrine, uses birth control, maybe is even unconvinced with the whole god/afterlife thing, but goes to church because, well, they've been going their whole lives and they like their fellow church goers.

They have been taught from birth that if they go to any other church they will be damned for eternity because the roman catholic church is "the one, true church". If you are taught this from birth and your parents, relatives, friends and neighbors ALL believe it and support it (because they were also brainwashed from birth), it is VERY difficult to break away. The cafeteria catholics are the ones who can sense something is not right, but they are afraid to leave, especially if they believe that their CHILDREN will burn in hell for eternity. So they continue to attend, but they ignore the silly roman catholic rules.

The resignation of the pope is a sign that the old politics of fear and intimidation is on the wane. Perhaps his forthcoming isolation in a monastery is his way of repenting and atoning. I think we are reaching a time in History that Science and technology will do away with the need for religion. It served it purpose, now it's time to move on. The pope has access to Vatican archives, all the secrets that have been hidden, maybe it's more than he can handle. L. I have no problem with the pope but why would you tell other people to pray for you. Seems like kind of a self rightous thing to do. If i was sick i wouldnt tell other people to pray for me. If they wanted to do it on their own fine, but i wouldnt tell them too.
Maybe the Pope just wants us to pray for him because GOD knows he was highly involved in the coverups of the sexual abuse of children. Maybe, when he was talking to GOD and GOD found out about all the abuse coverups so he told the Pope "I DON"T WANT TO TALK TO YOU ANYMORE, SO STEP DOWN." "We" is a vast continually growing body of consciousness that includes both micro and macro, other dimensional and other planetary. There is no supernatural, only natural. The human body that evolved from organic material that eventually could carry a conscious signal is very temporary,( almost every town has a cemetary) although as we advance in our awareness, the longevity of the organic form is also expanding. The expansion and contraction of various forms is caused by the pulse of quanta which creates vibration. When light and sound vibration intersect, a conscious signal evolves and becomes capable of enterring an unlimited multitude of various bodies. This conscious signal is the "I" that is independent yet part and parcel of both the limited organic form and the conscious energy beyond its parameters. Sorry to disappoint you, but there is much substantial evidence for this from both neurophysicists and particle physicists and more will be revealed this year from the Hadron collider in Cern.

The pope had to resign to allow an American to lead. They need an American to lead so they can get a catholic elected to the Whitehouse. Ever since the child raping priests came to light, the church has focused on damage control and increasing political power. A corrupt catholic presidient backed by a growing number of corrupt catholic legislatures is a far more efficient way to shove a corrupt religious agenda down freedom loving peoples throats than trying to convince them to simply join the most evil religious organization the world has ever seen.

No. It does not mean he is sure to get into heaven. You need to brush up on your Catholic theology. Catholicism does not teach final assurance of salvation for anyone; not even the Pope. In fact, if you claim to be "Dante's Inferno", you should know that Dante has a number of Popes burning in hell, and Dante was a devout Catholic, too, but he knew his theology.

Being a former child victim of the RCC I say to hell with Ratzinger and any other pope those evil cardinals want to elect.
I did some researching on the Malachy prophecy after remembering something from the past and I came across it. The original Malachy text is missing, It was destroyed I presume but what wasn't destroyed were other records of those who read the original text. In the original Malachy text, Malachy for some reason omitted the last word(s) of the first sentence of his text. "In the severe persecution of the holy roman church there will sit a ......" Now why did Malachy omit the remaining word(s) for? Was it for fear that he may get put to death by the RCC if he did disclose it to them?
Next think about this. Popes select cardinals and cardinals select popes. In words they hold the monopoly. And we all know what popes and cardinals are like after hearing all the things they done when it comes to pedophilia crimes. They're evil scum no doubt. Now getting back to the Malachy prophecy. After Joe Ratzinger will come a peter the roman. But the cardinals who are the ones chosen as pope, none of them possess the qualities needed to become peter the roman. Sure, some are named peter but they were not born in rome and those born in rome do not have the name of peter. Now what would happen if discosure came about meaning something that would expose the RCC for what it is, an abomination. All the cardinals could be kicked out meaning who would be pope? My theory, it has to do with the missing word(s) in the original Malachy text. That missing word could be "Priest"? A regular priest lets say who is outstanding in moral behavior and his name is peter and he was born in rome and is selected as the last pope. After this is the end, of the vatican lets say?
