A British Health Protection Agency photo shows an electron microscope image of a coronavirus, part of a family of viruses that cause ailments including the common cold and SARS. This one was first identified last year in the Middle East. A patient in Britain has died after being treated for the virus. So far 12 people have been diagnosed and six have perished.
LONDON -- A patient being treated for a mysterious SARS-like virus has died, a British hospital said Tuesday.
Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham, central England, said the coronavirus victim was also being treated for "a long-term, complex unrelated health problem" and already had a compromised immune system.
A total of 12 people worldwide have been diagnosed with the disease, six of whom have died.
The virus was first identified last year in the Middle East. Most of those infected had traveled to Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Jordan or Pakistan, but the person who just died is believed to have caught it from a relative in Britain, where there have been four confirmed cases.
The new coronavirus is part of a family of viruses that cause ailments including the common cold and SARS. In 2003, a global outbreak of SARS killed about 800 people worldwide.
Health experts still aren't sure exactly how humans are being infected. The new coronavirus is most closely related to a bat virus and scientists are considering whether bats or other animals like goats or camels are a possible source of infection.
Britain's Health Protection Agency has said while it appears the virus can spread from person to person, "the risk of infection in contacts in most circumstances is still considered to be low."
Officials at the World Health Organization said the new virus has probably already spread between humans in some instances. In Saudi Arabia last year, four members of the same family fell ill and two died. And in a cluster of about a dozen people in Jordan, the virus may have spread at a hospital's intensive care unit.

At MIT Dr. Rider has engineered an anti-viral that has stopped every virus the team has challenged it with including H1N1 and a rhinovirus (common cold). It is broad-spectrum meaning that it will be effective against virtually any viral infection.
I wrote up an article describing his work and a lay person presentation on the science…
MIT and the Demise of the Viral Infection
http://blog.readingthinkingandwriting.com/?p=500
If that's true .... you should be pushing this guy's contact info out to the media so big pharma doesnt kill it for their own benefit....
CogitoErgo,
I recommend adding this link in your article somewhere near the beginning.
http://www.ll.mit.edu/news/DRACO.html
Thank you... I am used to reading and writing sourced material, so I rarely link within the text. But that's a good idea.
I'm hoping that with the accessible explanation of the science behind DRACO everyone will get behind it. If we can get a Manhattan project for a bomb, surely we can get behind what may be a cure for major illnesses.
I've spoken with Dr. Rider and they are progressing despite only having the single NIH grant. His team can make real progress with relatively little money, but that one grant just keeps them limping along.
I try not to be a conspiracy person and for the most part , I am not. How ever , I know how much money means to the big cheeses out there. Their love of money is beyond an obsession. So i often ponder the idea that there are people out there who would pay off or buy the secrets to cures, so pharma companies can just keep raking in money . Think about it, just say there is a way to treat or cure a lot of these diseases, then when the diseases are gone, you make a lot of Job positions obsolete, and funding obsolete. No need for 500 employees who make drugs to keep people healthy as long as possible from terrible diseases if they are all of a sudden cured.
Or perhaps there are ways to make a carburetor that will allow a vehicle to go 100 miles to the gallon, but that would hit the pocket of our Gas makers and our over sea suppliers..
So in essence, everything is such a perfectly balanced system, that if anything drastic were to happen, i.e cure for aids, cancer, flu, vehicle carb.. that can optimize gas consumption, ect ect it would throw our entire economic structure into chaos. I hate thinking that these scenarios could possibly be true.. or maybe they are not.
I cant say I like that we travel so much from country to country so free back and forth. I know its a free world for the most part, but I get freaked out thinking that we let people go over to 3rd world countries who get exposed to all kinds of viruses and diseases and then bring that stuff back here. Or we just allow whom ever to come into our country that bring all kinds of diseases and viruses. You can take away freedoms to protect us better, or be as liberal as you want and allow anyone and every thing, but then suffer from things that will wipe us out. HUm..
amen brother.....I agree with everything you say
They have the first actual cure for something, instead of just preventive medicine, and they can't get funding? Anyone else see the irony in this?
Yup---just keep letting those disease ridden aliens into your country----you don't need them, they bring in these diseases because they are not innoculated against anything.
I read a lot of reasearch. I am actually focused on targeted cancer therapies, but Dr. Rider's work was compelling enough to stop and work on. When it comes to the conspiracy theories... yes, it's very difficult not to think they "have this cure or that in a safe somewhere".
However, everything moves on peer reviewed literature. Even our stealth aircraft were built on math published by a Russian scientist decades ago. The literature does not suggest a cure is sitting on a shelf... but it might suggest an intentional underfunding of "cure-oriented" reasearch.
Please, stop with the hate speech.
I should note that as far as I've read, the government only funds basic research; meaning, how proteins work, how can they be manipulated, etc... However, maybe we should be pushing our reps in congress to pass a bill that would have the government fund the development of clearly "curative therapeutics". Even taking on the cost of clinical trials...
The up-front costs may be high, but not comparatively so... but the return could be an enormous reduction in government expenditures in healthcare.
Treatment means money - cures mean loss of money. As Chris Rock said - they're still mad at all the money they lost on Polio.
These penny auctions sites are all a scam. Please read forums reviews on all these stupid sites by googling them before you waste your time or money on it.
In case anyone is interested (and is versed, the language is thick)... this is the targeted cancer therapy I proposed. It's based on a Caspase protein that is always active, but held in check by something called an intein. The intein serves as a switch triggered on the binding of a inlaid antibody which is specific for a signature sequence from a mutated protein.

There is no mystery here. "This is the business we're in...."
Business.
MIT spendt $1,375,000,000 on research in a year. They have 509 patent applications. MIT has 18 startup companies.
MIT also has 91 licenses and option exercises. They are paid royalties on licences and have "part-ownership" in several of the startup companies.
When you own the intellectual and or process patents and have a % ownership in a company, you make money which can go back into research. Sounds just like corporate America....which it is.
I have ownership in a SOLAR startup company that is of this business model. 2 research schools have been given stock options in return for their research in their existing facilities. Reduces costs of research and "keeps the profits in the family" when it is commercialized. When further capitol is needed, additional shares are sold to raise cash.
From an investment standpoint, it is speculative.....but think of the ROI....return on investment of an antiviral drug that kills a broad spectrum of viruses.
CHA-CHING!!!!!!
BTW: I would name the OTC solar company.....but it is within a couple years of going commercial and is now getting government grants...so, find it yourself.

Probably man made. These idiots are always coming up with something like this. They are under the illusion that they can containe them.
Buy all the guns you can, it's the end of the world! (again)
COGITO, is there a "DR." in front of your name, or "MD" behind your name? I read your first link. I understood about 20% of it. :)
Is it true that the FDA has an approximate 10 year "proving ground" that has to be covered before the entry of any viable "cure" to the public market? Just that alone would keep pill Pharms going. And aside from sweeping a cure under the rug,as with car manufactors, cures can be released slowly ..a little at a time as the 'new and improved'version..a slightly better than the year before marketing tool. And, sadly, there are too many older folks whom, if we are kept alive for extended periods impact the total scheme of health insurance and medicaid..job markets if we really feel good. I know the brilliance of researchers..and also, sadly, the bottom line of capitalism.
Tom...
Thank you very much for reading my paper! No, I am not a doctor... I am self-taught in the biosciences ranging from Neuroscience to Immunology (my current love). I'm just a guy who uses the remote to open books instead of turn on the TV. ;)
On your post...
I agree that there is a high potential for profit since, despite curing one infection, there will be others...
As far as "business"... I'd hope everyone remembers that business is not photosynthesis; it's not a natural phenonmenon. We laid out the rules and we can change them. In this country, it seems, the corporate zeitgeist has gone away from providing a quality good or service, to getting a few people rich quick regardless of the outcome.
Well... Darwin got it partially right. Survival of the fittest is an element of evolution, not the sole mechanic. If it were, it seems, we would have retractable poison darts under our arms, the speed of a cheetah, and the water retention of a camel...
Actually, from my reading, it is symbiosis that led to the major advancements in life and it is our ability to communicate, care for each other, and our capacity for the acquisition and generation of knoweldge that put us as the dominant species on the planet.
Net worth != Self worth... for me, self-worth is derived from what you do to benefit the life around you, completely of your own free will, and relative to what you are capable of doing.
My brother is a Nuclear Electrical engineer...I'll tell you the same thing I tell him...too smart for your own good. :)
My gift is numbers, and since I'm a caregiver for my 90% bedbound wife...."I take the lemons and make lemonade" I research and invest instead of watching TV and video games...don't even own a video game and have TV only in wifey's room.
I think a lot of the negative minded morons who post could benefit from expanding their knowledge. Refreshing to see.
If people knew how simple it is...more would do their own "asset management" but getting started was one of the scariest things I've ever done.
So great to read a blog with intelligent conversation devoid of mud throwing and politics. Thank you. You made my day.
Tom, my best wishes to you and your wife. And thanks to you and Sialia for your kind comments.
50% mortality rate...hmm...this could be interesting....

So annoying how people use these mssg boards for advertising stupid things.
gotta agree...bunch of maggots that advertise on msg boards
I prefer the advertising to the racism, homophobia, misogyny, and hate that is spewed.
I make it a point never to buy anything from the sites that are so advertised.
You are NOT going get my business by spamming me to a murderous rage on sundry unrelated web forums no matter how good of a deal you are pitching.
I hate people who hate
Expect to see more of this kind of thing in the USA as troops come back from contaminated sh*tholes like Afghanistan.
Got to watch our south border also..no telling what those illegal b-ners are bringing in.
Aside from the obvious overt racism, you are correct. The most common ailment that they are bringing in is tuberculosis.
thing looks like a Metroid
Who cares. Just put the Bats in a cage..
I have my knive/crossbow, to kill em Dayrl Dixion stlye if it comes back as a Walker ......
if many people were already exposed to this in the middle east and only a handful died from it so far, then it's nothing to panic about esp when a lot more people die from the flu each year.
And a new "black death" appears on the horizon, mans extinction or at least major die off will be from a microscopic bug....
Mother Nature saying we're not at the top of the food chain, so either stop jacking up the planet or get the hell off of it...
...and the sequester looms, cutting NIH and CDC funding with the same broad axe that will be used to cut REAL waste and abuse. Do not cut NIH or CDC funding. If the republicans did not embrace a science-stupid and math-stupid philosophy, this would not be an issue. Put in a transaction tax on Wall Street. Hands off NIH funding to our universities.
Yankee,
A few Arab's, having sex with their favorite goats, snag a virus and you Far Left doorknobs immediately start blaming Republicans. I'm just surprised you didn't include Bush. Idiots!
They are not telling us everything . This will not be the last we see of this. it's just a matter of time it jumps from the wright species.
We have a new found biological weapon
I have been following this company and its virus killer for some time just in the unlikely event some strange virus hits my family or a new killer flu hits. For the life of me I cannot understand why our beauracratic FDA fails to fast track and push this 100% effective (in cell culture/mice trials) into the marketplace possibly saving thousands of lives. I suppose the small company does not have enough money clout to pay off the political hacks who have influence with the FDA.

i like the way the article says " it`s ( possible ) to spread the virus form person to person " .. yet the headline below says definitively " new virus spread person to person " ..create a false panic why dont you !!!!!
I am more interested in knowing what the symptoms are! This is an example of poor journalism, you publish news about a growing deadly (50% mortality rate) viral disease that is spreading worldwide and point out how serious it was in 2003, but can't tell us where it is derived from and don't even bother to caution us as to what the symptoms are. I guess we have to do our own research. As opposed of telling us what you don't know and giving us mear speculations, perhaps you could have shared more of what you did find out.
I wish Dr. Rider all the success, but I am more concerned with his health. People thoughout history have come up with hugh leaps in technology, just to find themselves blackballed, ridiculed or they just seem to disappear! This would chop into big Pharma's pocket in a very large way. Do you think they will just stand by and let it happen? They will first try to purchase the rights and if that doesn't work he will have a heart attack, a car accident or something like that. His work will mysteriously disappear or be burned by some freak fire. I don't mean to be the grim reaper but, this is what we have allowed our society to become. Where business dictates the law and the people like sheep, allow it to happen not believing they could do such horrible things to their own people. Again, I wish you the best, but please watch your back!
Time to cull the heard
The culling needs to be down as they cross. The 3 S plan - Shoot Shovel and Shut Up
Are they sure it isn't a new strain of booty flu?
I am more interested in knowing what the symptoms are! This is an example of poor journalism. You all publish news about a growing deadly (50% mortality rate) viral disease that is spreading worldwide and take the time to point out how serious another stran was in 2003, but fail to tell us what to look for. I suppose we are to do our own research. As opposed to telling us what you don't know and speculating, how about you tell us what you did find out. I didn't find this article very news worthy, it left too many unanswered questions.
And 28 Days Later . . . .
This is what happens when a country, such as ours, opens its doors to third world societies that live like animals. Close our borders, period. Tired of supporting all these degenerates.
And people wonder why a certain percentage of people are against illegal immigration. These people are a grave health risk from the south. TB is popping up everywhere along with the whopping cough. No telling what else they bring in this country with them that is for sure. I can see us having a plague like outbreak destroying a large part of the population.
Makes you wonder who is dabbling in the lab..Out of the blue here comes another Virus for something and another one and another one..It is not the people fault..Virus just dont come out of thin air.Oh hell the killer bees were created in Africa now those things are all over the place..Dont trust the government..Just google A History Of US Secret Human Experimentation even in 2013 the experimentation continues..
