Victim of mysterious SARS-like virus dies in British hospital

A British Health Protection Agency photo shows an electron microscope image of a coronavirus, part of a family of viruses that cause ailments including the common cold and SARS. This one was first identified last year in the Middle East. A patient in Britain has died after being treated for the virus. So far 12 people have been diagnosed and six have perished.

LONDON -- A patient being treated for a mysterious SARS-like virus has died, a British hospital said Tuesday.

Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham, central England, said the coronavirus victim was also being treated for "a long-term, complex unrelated health problem" and already had a compromised immune system.

A total of 12 people worldwide have been diagnosed with the disease, six of whom have died.

The virus was first identified last year in the Middle East. Most of those infected had traveled to Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Jordan or Pakistan, but the person who just died is believed to have caught it from a relative in Britain, where there have been four confirmed cases.

The new coronavirus is part of a family of viruses that cause ailments including the common cold and SARS. In 2003, a global outbreak of SARS killed about 800 people worldwide.

Health experts still aren't sure exactly how humans are being infected. The new coronavirus is most closely related to a bat virus and scientists are considering whether bats or other animals like goats or camels are a possible source of infection.

Britain's Health Protection Agency has said while it appears the virus can spread from person to person, "the risk of infection in contacts in most circumstances is still considered to be low."

Officials at the World Health Organization said the new virus has probably already spread between humans in some instances. In Saudi Arabia last year, four members of the same family fell ill and two died. And in a cluster of about a dozen people in Jordan, the virus may have spread at a hospital's intensive care unit.

I would not put much stock in this. A person can go into a British hospital and die of a common cold.

i'm sorry i have to agree, before immigrants are allowed in U.S. they should be checked and have to pay to get shots. We are doing this to ourselves by letting everyone and their brother come to the U.S. Look at our welfare system, its full of immigrants and their getting just as lazy as the others on system. Dont get me wrong, their is people and families on it which i support, but its the lazys that will be dammed if they will work. That said , slow down the process of bringing people into the U.S. I'm sorry but we need to protect our own for once.

Big Pharma is already on top of it. NVAX has a platform to address both existing and new viruses and come up with an immediate solution within weeks of new viral existence. They have one of the biggest Gov't contract to date to solve this problem and first intiated when the first SARS and virus came out.

This is why we need to close our borders other countries carry disease we do not have or ones that we got rid of years ago, no one should be allowed here unless they have had every shot we require

Labs all over the world are producing these "New" viruses. They try to see how far they can go. They mutate the viruses to produce new more deadlier ones. Then release them "unannounced" to the public to see the impact value. The more they tinker with these viruses the worse its gonna get. We will be our own grave diggers. Human kind will be on the brink of extinction if someone dosent stop these people.

When I was young, the same flu and cold viruses were the same strain for many, many, years. Now all of a sudden with today's technology viruses mutate every year. They get deadlier and deadlier. They are not mutating by themselves, they've had help! heed my words people.

Awesome. A common cold virus manipulated to achieve results that we're not told about, and it's killing 50% of it's hosts.

Just traveling makes me nervous. We are planning a trip to Disney World in June and there are alot of people that travel from the UK to Disney World. I'm nervous about germs anyhow, but this make it that much worse. I guess we'll just wash our hands all the time and use sanitizer. Can't control airborne stuff. waiting in lines and people coughing around you. Makes you want to wear a mask.

50% fatality rate. That's not a good sign, that's like below plague levels. Granted it's nothing like the plague. But that means if two people caught it, one of them will die. Not good odds.

I am certainly not a conspiracy not, not am I generally anti-business. However, lately I have become suspicious of the big pharmaceutical companies. They are extremely profitable yet they continuously raise their prices at rates significantly faster than the rate of inflation. It is not unheard of to see prices of certain drugs to double in a short period of time. Yet I don't necessarily beleive the claims of some of these drugs.

I think our whole system of letting private pharmaceuticals do the research, conduct the trials, manufacture the drugs and then market them to the public is flawed. We are getting a lot of overpriced drugs where the benefits are overhyped and the side effects are minimalized.

I would rather see the government do the research, universities and independent clinics do the testing and let the pharmaceuticals manufacture and market. I think we would all be better off.

The pharmaceutical companies no have too much financial incentive to fudge the results of their drugs and too much incentive to keep drug prices as high as possible for as long as possible.

If any of you find yourself in a situation where you have to pay for drugs out of pocket, you will think differently.

Millions board airplanes (that recycles the same air) and fly around the globe daily. Your infected neighbors can bake you a birthday cake and boom you got this bug.

Get used to the idea that you nor any human being is that significant in the scheme of things on Earth.

If you think you are then stick your head out your window, look up and wave for a satellite picture.

Eat deer, rabbit and game hens. My freezer is packed full. You can keep the store meat shelf, hormone pumped, water / slime filled, Hep A, worms and other parasites, e coli laden crap you pay through the nose for at your local grocery store.

Immigrants have the right to bring diseases into the country under Obama. To question an immigrant in any way, "or any minority" is considered racism. Whites only are held liable and responsible for their actions.

Another crazy dictator trying to squeeze what they can from prosperous countries by threats. Both father and son spent most of the countries resources on their military not on infrastructure and so the people are kept ignorant poor and hungry.
