People watch "Zero Dark Thirty" outside a computer shop in Abbottabad, Pakistan, the town where Osama bin Laden was found hiding when American special forces killed him in May 2011. The Academy Award-nominated film appears unlikely to be shown on the local big screen anytime soon.
ISLAMABAD, Pakistan –“Very Zero, Very Dark” reads one Pakistani film review.
“Zero IQ Thirty” another headline screams.
But just like Osama Bin Laden, the subject of the Oscar contender that recreates the most expensive manhunt in history, "Zero Dark Thirty" is not supposed to be in Pakistan.
The film has not been released, officially. Thus, there is no response, officially, from Pakistani government censors to Kathryn Bigelow's controversial depiction of Pakistan. Therefore, technically, no one in Pakistan is supposed to have ever seen the movie.

But in reality, "Zero Dark Thirty" is being watched, noticed, slammed and unofficially banned, even while trending on Twitter.
Some of the backlash in the mainstream press here was balanced.
“Though sharp in its production and direction and largely accurate in depicting the events that led to the death of Osama Bin Laden,” wrote respected columnist, Nadeem Farooq Paracha, in Dawn newspaper. “It went ballistic bad in depicting everyday life on the streets of Pakistan.”
Paracha says that the movie may be designed to embarrass Pakistan, its people, its military and even its distinct culture. Or it might be simply a victim of sloppy research, he mused.
The journalist lists what he believes are the films goofs: The Pakistanis sound like an Indianized Arabic speakers (they are not). They eat hummus (which Pakistanis largely don’t). A character in the movie claims that nobody in Pakistan drives SUVs (people love their SUVs here).
Both Sen. John McCain and Senate Intelligence Chair Dianne Feinstein have complained to SONY Pictures that the film is 'factually inaccurate.' NBC's Andrea Mitchell reports.
But what triggered more questions about the movie's message and motive here was when the country’s major cinema players decided not to buy the film from international distributors.
“As a local distributor, there was no financial viability for me. The film was already widely available in the [pirated] DVD market,” said Mohsin Yaseen, general manager of Cinepax, the largest multiplex chain in Pakistan . “But as a film buff, the movie was inaccurate about Pakistan. If you’re going to say something about a complicated part of the world, then you should say it right.”
But Nadeem Mandviwalla, chief executive of Mandviwalla Entertainment, who has been buying and distributing Hollywood blockbusters for three decades in Pakistan, played down the hype.
“This whole ‘ban, ban, ban’ bit is a scam. It’s an assumption and just pure hype that’s perfectly timed for Oscar season,” Mandviwalla said. “There is no politics [regarding screening "Zero Dark Thirty"]. There are tons of movies that don’t make it here. It’s not a political decision the army or the ISI [Pakistan's intelligence agency] makes for us. We, as businessmen, make it. And it was bad business modeling to bring this movie to Pakistan.”

But on the ground, reality has matched the fiction featured in the 157-minute thriller. In Islamabad, the movie was widely available in local DVD stores until mid-January, offered with either the original cover art or a locally designed version featuring bin Laden and current al-Qaida chief Ayman al-Zawahri.
Things are different now.
“We were asked to stop selling the movie by some guys a couple of weeks after we started stocking it,” said an attendant at Illusions, a popular movie and music retailer in Islamabad’s upscale Jinnah Super arcade.
“There were four of them. Two stood outside, as if on guard, and two came inside and told us that 'Zero Dark Thirty' was banned,” said the man who asked not to be named because for his own security. “They said they were from Aabpara [the local neighborhood that headquarters the ISI]. They asked us to send the DVDs back to the warehouse, and they took a few discs back for themselves.”
“They were very polite,” he added.

It is a fictional account of a fictional raid.
What's the problem?
Oh Please!!! Enough with the conspiracy theories and other non-sense. The raid obviously happened and they did get bin Laden. The Pakistanis would not have made such a stink if the raid did not actually happen and even the al Qaeda leadership admitted that bin Laden was dead. What I am waiting for is al Qaeda and their affiliates like the Taliban to start threatening to blow up any store that sells the movie or theater that shows it, that would be in line with their usual rhetoric. The headline on this article is of course completely wrong in an attempt to be sensational and get people to click on the story. The people interviewed who own theaters and distribute films in Pakistan clearly state that there is no ban. I can not think of any logical reason why they would deny it if there really was a ban of any kind. It is just pure economics, there is not enough of a market for the film for them to bother distributing it. Even the one story about the supposed people from the ISI asking one store to stop selling the movie is questionable. Even if this did happen, it was more likely some Taliban or al Qaeda types posing as ISI to try and stop the film from being sold.
Somebody is running out of crack. But that aside ...
It's really the pak military that doesn't want Pakistani's to see this film. Because this film shatters the myth of Power of Pak Military. Inaccuracies exist in all films - including oscar winners.
BTW - pakistanis are not Arabs at all. Arabs are from Saudi Arabia and north Africa. Even Iraqis would hate to call themselves Arabs. Americans need to get these facts straight.

And even more, was Osama Bin Laden existing the whole 10 years because from what I heard, he died in 2002 in a hospital and the american government has lied to the world the whole time about him. Obama has increased aid to Pakistan because of this fictional, Hollywood style event that occurred to capture Tim Osman. Tim Osman has been part of this alliance all along. Pakistan waited about a month so everyone could watch the movie, then did this to still make it look like they are upset. It's very possible that the Pakistanis themselves raided the house, threw some pots and pans around inside, then left. America still bows down to Saudis and Israelis, the ones actually responsible for knocking down the towers. Typical spineless cowards of the US.

It was a real raid, and then Hollywood made a fictional story about it, which didn't have to do with the real raid at all. Oh, and Hollywood wants you to watch it and decide for yourself. After you spend money on it.
Pakistan hid Bin Laden so they think the US is the enemy, even though the Taliban and Al Quaeda are responsible for killing more people in Pakistan than the US ever did trying to kill Pakistan's enemies. So of course they don't like this film. But that doesn't mean the film is credible, either.

I really cannot say I care one way or another whether Pakistan objects to the movie or not. The fact is that the international embarrassment they suffered over harboring Bin Laden is solely their problem to deal with. The U.S. just simply did what had to be done.
They crashed a helicopter.
And not just any helicopter, an ultra-expensive, top secret, stealth helicopter.
They wanted to get in and get out with DENIABILITY. Thus the use of stealth helicopters.
They were 50/50, according to the planner's own statements, about whether Bin Laden was actually there.
If he wasn't there then officially the raid "never happened".
You think we would invade an ally, shoot up a civilian residence, have nothing to show for it and then say "yep, that was us".

Once the helicopter crashed CIRCUMSTANCES governed the choreography. We were never going to admit we invaded an ally, shot up a civilian residence, had nothing to show for it AND LOST SUPER SENSITIVE STEALTH TECHNOLOGY to boot. Never.

Think the pictures would solve the riddle of which Navy Seal fired the kill shot? One account -- "No Easy Day" -- has one side of "Bin Laden's" skull collapsed by shots received when "Bin Laden" stuck his head out into the hallway. The other account -- "The Man Who Killed Osama bin Laden... Is Screwed" -- has the forehead split open in a V-shape with brain matter gooing forth from a tight pattern of multiple shots to the center of the forehead.
By the first account a "call" was made as to the id of the corpse from the famous nose. In the second account the Seal didn't want to deal with the mess and quickly left the room -- no examination by him. Too bad NFL refs weren't there to make a "call" -- real refs not unreliable "replacement refs", of course. "It's................Bin Laden!"
The replay booth, unfortunately, was manned by the CIA. And the rest is our history and movies.
Yeah, let me know when that next video of Bin Laden comes out, and while you're at it, find out why AQ admitted Bin Laden was dead. Or is that just part of the grand CIA cover-up?

Let's review the facts, the worlds most wanted terrorist, was found in a large rather conspicuous estate, a couple miles from a major military academy in your country, and shot to death, by Navy Seals from the United States, who flew helicopters in from Afghanistan, and you didn't even get to fire off a shot in response.

Zero Dark Thirty is nothing but propaganda. Osama bin Laden was a CIA pawn in the late 90s to make videos. After he died of kidney failure in 2001, they kept his body on ice for still photographs. After the 'raid' on 'his' compound, they dumped his body into the sea. As Aaron Russo said ( before he was silenced ) the whole war on terror is a fraud for money, oil, and control. It's a lie, and innocent people ( as well as American troops ) are being killed everyday for a bank account, and the American Empire.

I am convinced that subscribing to such theories as this is simply a ploy for malcontents to feed their Narcissistic addiction to excitement. Never do I see any evidence supporting such claims, except from ridiculous rags who publish articles with reckless abandon just to get ratings and attention. Pakistan is getting paid foreign aid from the US in amounts larger than ever before because of assisting in staging this! To be even more accurate, ANY religion is a cancer if it has a direct influence over the governing of people. The smartest thing our founding fathers did was to try to keep religion out of our government as much as possible. If not for that, the U.S. would be even more hated right now and probably would have been involved in or still be involved in a war that would make WWII look like a picnic. One day we may be forced into that anyway and it won't matter that we don't have a god calling for the annihilation of all unbelieving people, we will still have to fight. US Warned Risks Nuclear Attack Over Osama Bin Laden Death

The exact timing of the attack on bin Laden’s ISI protected compound was inadvertently noted by a Pakistani engineer named Sohaib Athar [photo 3rd left] who at 0100hr sent a Twitter message that said “Helicopter hovering above Abbottabad at 1AM (is a rare event).”
Upon their initial strike upon bin Laden’s compound, this report continues, ISI forces rushed to the scene where they were immediately fired upon by the Americans resulting in at least two deaths, one from a Pakistani helicopter shot out of the sky by US fired air-to-air missile.
Most curious about bin Laden’s death at the hands of the Americans is that he has long been known to be one of their most valuable assets who helped them defeat the Soviets in Afghanistan and operated under the CIA code-name “Tim Osman”, and who according to a once top-secret US document [photo bottom left] visited many American military bases and the White House too. This where the US is headed. Yeh, well what brought about a lot of the censorship was what happened one time in the 60s. They would show the fighting in Vietnam on the News and you would see people laying dead, dying, get shot, etc. Keep in mind the news sometimes took a couple or three days to get "film" footage back to the news office. One evening while a couple was watching the News they saw their son shot and killed just before the Military Officer rang the doorbell to inform them. Once this story got out they very quickly wrote some Laws Governing things like this.
In the case of Bin Ladin, it's a religious thing. The Muslims are already fired up and You want to put more fuel on the fire by displaying him dead. Grow a brain cell or two.
6dogs your own logic derails your point. Our own president couldn't wait to go on national/world TV, with a smile, and state that Bin Laden had been killed and how he sent seal team 6 in. During the election cycle, Obama and Biden were heard around the world stating Bin Laden is dead and GM lives; Biden even suggested that this saying would make a good bumper sticker.

Get used to things being banned here too at just anyone discression. already we are limited in bying happy meals for our kids, the size of sodas we can purchase and what size of magazine we can have in our plinking rifle. Before long we WILL see the "official" religion....and the "authorized" things we can say in public.

Big Dave, it is actually rare when the US government tells the truth. And lies are not exclusive to Obama administration...see Bush administration, Clinton administration, Regan administration, on and on and on.
Well, here's my theory. If an individual is so upset with how "rarely" the government tells the truth, then that individual should find another country to call home. Try Pakistan. I hear they always tell the truth there.
My point is that there are some things that the public is never going to know. I know things that I have learned during my military service that would blow your mind, but I'm not ever going to tell you, because you don't have a need to know. Telling lies and keeping information from the public are two different things.

Try doing a bit of research and then make an informed decision before believing everything you read. Otherwise, such comments show your irresponsibility and gullibility.
WHO CARES? I don't. I'm really sick of events that happen in this nation especially having to do with terrorist. Then the film industry makes millions. What do our victims get. The young men and women fighting in Afghanistan, etc. that have been tortured, maimed and killed. As well as other innocent Americans. Bring them all home let the ignorant people live their lives the way they want to. I didn't watch the movie about Casey Anthony why should the evil ones get the notoriety. And I won't watch this movie either. The administration we have in office right now. If they said it was daylight and it was. I still wouldn't believe them. Just my opinion, I do respect the fact that the Film Industry has an inalienable right to make this movie and am proud to live in a country that has this Freedom. At least for now.
I think the PAKs embarrassed themselves. Thats why they dont want to be caught viewing it in the Theaters. They are simply embarrassed but still curious about the truth so the watch it at home.
That movie sucked so much it pulled me right out of my chair and out the exit.
