Protesters near the Indian parliament Thursday complain that a new sexual violence law is inadequate. Their signs call for the removal of the deputy chairman of the parliament's upper house, P.J. Kurien, who is facing rape allegations.
NEW DELHI -- Police were searching villages in western India on Friday for suspects in the rape and killing of three young sisters, as Indians still angry over the fatal gang rape of a woman on a New Delhi bus in December face another heinous sexual attack.
The bodies of the sisters — ages 7, 9 and 11 — were found Feb. 16 in a village well in Bhandara district in Maharashtra after they had gone missing from school two days earlier, said police officer Abhinav Deshmukh. The area is more than 600 miles south of New Delhi, the capital.
The victims' mother said police did not take the case seriously and did nothing for several days until villagers held protests.
Deshmukh said Friday that 10 teams of 30 investigators were working on the case and that he was confident they would find the killers soon.
Police first dismissed the deaths as accidental, the Press Trust of India news agency reported. The girls' mother accused police of a shoddy investigation and said they did nothing for two days. Enraged villagers forced shops to close, burned tires and blocked a national highway passing in the area for hours earlier this week, demanding justice.
Police eventually registered a case of rape and murder after a post-mortem of the girls found that they had been sexually abused and brutally killed, PTI said.
One police officer has been suspended for not acting promptly, Indian Heavy Industries Minister Praful Patel, who represents Bhandara district in Parliament, said Thursday.
Cabinet Minister Manish Tewari called the killings a "very, very heinous assault" and said Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was sending 1 million rupees ($18,300) to the girls' family.
The case has horrified Indians two months after they were outraged by the gang rape and killing of a young woman on a moving New Delhi bus.
The gang rape sparked nationwide protests about India's treatment of women and spurred the government to hurry through a new package of laws to protect them.
The gang rape victim and her male friend, who also was badly beaten up in the attack, were dumped naked on the roadside, and the woman died from her injuries two weeks later in a Singapore hospital. Five men are being tried on rape and murder charges in that case, while a sixth, who is underage, is in juvenile court.
A new law enacted by the government has increased the prison sentences for rape from the existing seven to 10 years to a maximum of 20 years. It also provides for the death penalty in extreme cases of rape that result in death or leave the victim in a coma.

I think the men in that country, and I use the word men loosely, need to start waking up with their p*ckers cut off. They are some sick SOB's in that country. The last several times I have read of these rapes taking place just makes me so mad I can't stand it. What is it with these countries that think it is okay to rape babies, young girls, and women any time they want to and with any object they want to. In the Sudan they rape them so forcefully and repeatedly that they need reconstruction surgery to even be able to use the restroom again. If they can't get the surgery they just go about their life leaning on a cane, if they can walk, with their waste leaking out of their bodies. Where do such ANIMALS come from? These _________— are not people. They cannot be human and inflict those types of injuries on a female, be it a grown woman or a small baby. They need to be killed, repeatedly.

Unconscionable that it took a post-mortem to figure out these precious young girls were brutally killed as if it were not obvious and mom ignored until *the people* protested?

Nonsense, Republicans or shall we say some people value human life as God's gift to us humans and it must be treated as such and preserved no matter what. Now, if someone supports that position and you ask a difficult question as to what happens in case of a rape? Well, there is no easy answer to that question.. Some who strongly believe that human life must be preserved no matter what tend to sway towards preserving the baby, some are in between and some oppose under such circumstances (this from amongst the Republicans or so called "pro-lifers"). These are not "women haters", but simply "pro-lifers" faced with a very difficult question that each of them answers little differently based on their faith, life experiences and conscience. This coming from a person who voted for Bush in his second term, Obama in the first term and didn't vote this past election for no candidate was good enough..

Women and girls in India are objects of perverts rape fantasies. The penalty should be increased to the death sentence in every case. Evan attempted rape should get death.

In Native American culture, anyman who committed a crime against women was given over to the women for punishment! To this day a Native women's regalia includes a skinning knife which is worn behind her back, guess what happened? These poor excuses for human beings should be turned over to the women of their tribe!
There are also some South American Indian cultures that have a history of women meting out justice for crimes against women or children. Of course western justice has pretty much put a stop to the practice but there are still some remote villages that will take a man out in the woods and castrate him.

This particular situation in India, and a real problem (not imaginary) is based on culture and education, and in spite of the regular crime existent not only in India, but everywhere else.
In addition, we all know that existent laws are applied by the ones capable of enforcing them, like local law enforcement agents. This is a fact in India, as it is a fact in the U.S. and everywhere else in the world. Laws mean a lot as far as they are enforced by the ones responsible to enforce them.

I am really surprised that no one in India has brought out the rope and reserved a few appropriate tree limbs. This is getting out of hand, but is probably just finally getting the press it needs to become a serious problem for the politicians and police in India.

In a region where religion and culture has kept the women as second class citizens for thousands of years, how can you expect that the illiterate male population to think otherwise?
You can get a clear picture of the culture if you will only read the portions of the old Testament where women are spoken of. Religion is just a reference point of how a society thinks and lives so try not to get your knickers in a wad about Muslims and Hindu's. Abraham, the most reverred person for multiple religions had hundreds of wives and concubines. He had hundreds of sons that were his pride, but his daughters are hardly mentioned except as trade goods.
In another thousand years Women will have full respect in all societies because they are now in the Combat Military of the largest Armies of the world and will eventually get a chance to castrate some of these societies as they (Islam) become more militant towards the west. The West needs to become less tolerant to these radical religions and see them for what they truly are, Rabid Dogs that need to be put down as inhumanely as possible. These people have been stuck in a time that was over two thousand years ago, so how can we expect them to act as if they belong to the 21st century? Much like the news story about the Cannibals and headhunters burning witches, they are living in another time and place, removed from the modern cultures. India has always favored boys over girls. Hundreds of thousand girls were aborted. Especially in the poorer regions, where girls were considered a liability because of dowry they had to provide if theire daughters were married, while a son could work on the farm and take care of the parents in old age. With globilazation it has become even worse and put more people in poverty than ever. Similar to our country, the rich in india dont care about the poor and because there are now more men than women, there are more rapes and crimes because of poverty
Girls and women beeing raped has been going on for decades in India. It is just now, that women have finally had enough and are standing up to theire abusers, because the whole world is watching.
My heart goes out to the mother who has lost three of her children all at once. Its time, India wakes up and put laws into place so women dont have to live in fear every day of theire lives like they had to in the past.There are many poor regions that dont have acess to the internet or the media and unfortunately those women living there will never have a voice and rape has become part of theire lives.

Nation You are correct that men are favored in India. It is just as bad in China. Their abandoning or aborting female babies has led to a surplus of males. Chinese men have been buying Vietnamese women from poor families promising marriage only for some of these girls to be used by numerous men as prostitues and housekeepers. Sad days for women in the east.

Families should be scared all over India! If the sadists, rapists, molesters, monsters are attacking children, then no one is safe. Walk your children to and from bus or school. Setup up security for your children! Appears whoever is doing these heinous acts do not want the girls to have any education. If the schools are far then make the school's administration responsible for the children's safety, especially if the parents have to pay for school. Public education is only in the US and the future of India is under attack! If I were there, I would go door to door letting parents know this is your future and your children should never be deprived of making the most of their future!
This type of crime is quite rare in India. Yes, there had been another high-profile case, I know. However, the rate of crime is relatively low. There are hundreds of millions of girls being educated.
Sometimes, a crime can be so bizarre, that it will get picked up by the international media. This does not mean that it is the norm. More than a billion people live there, and 99% will never be affected by any crime at all.

Look up the rape statistics, my friend--you will see that the rape statistics are lower for India than the USA.

The police treat these rape/murder crimes like it's nothing. I agree with most of the posts: This might be the most horrible thing I've seen.
Although not a proponent for the death penalty in most cases, I AM for this type of crime. Anyone who can rape/ kill innocents (women, children, mentally challenged) deserve to be killed in return.

People in the west are continually shocked by these behaviors but they have been going on in the east for thousands of years. The men of the east are determined to keep their culture of dominance over all females intact. Even in the western cultures some men still cling to the notion that they will dominate women.In the end, until women are freed from this oppressive behavior, the world will never have peace.

We have a Indian family renting a house in our gated community. Just the other day I heard loud shouting, I went outside and witnessed a young man punch a young lady in the side of the face because she refused to get in his car. We yelled at him and said we were calling 911 and he fled the scene almost hitting other cars as he sped away recklessly. Shows his arrogance and lack of respect for women.
The US needs to immediately ban all US companies from outsourcing work to India till India institutes laws and sensitivity training for all Indian men and boys.
The Officials that did nothing about this should be prosecuted as accessories to murder.
