Protesters near the Indian parliament Thursday complain that a new sexual violence law is inadequate. Their signs call for the removal of the deputy chairman of the parliament's upper house, P.J. Kurien, who is facing rape allegations.
NEW DELHI -- Police were searching villages in western India on Friday for suspects in the rape and killing of three young sisters, as Indians still angry over the fatal gang rape of a woman on a New Delhi bus in December face another heinous sexual attack.
The bodies of the sisters — ages 7, 9 and 11 — were found Feb. 16 in a village well in Bhandara district in Maharashtra after they had gone missing from school two days earlier, said police officer Abhinav Deshmukh. The area is more than 600 miles south of New Delhi, the capital.
The victims' mother said police did not take the case seriously and did nothing for several days until villagers held protests.
Deshmukh said Friday that 10 teams of 30 investigators were working on the case and that he was confident they would find the killers soon.
Police first dismissed the deaths as accidental, the Press Trust of India news agency reported. The girls' mother accused police of a shoddy investigation and said they did nothing for two days. Enraged villagers forced shops to close, burned tires and blocked a national highway passing in the area for hours earlier this week, demanding justice.
Police eventually registered a case of rape and murder after a post-mortem of the girls found that they had been sexually abused and brutally killed, PTI said.
One police officer has been suspended for not acting promptly, Indian Heavy Industries Minister Praful Patel, who represents Bhandara district in Parliament, said Thursday.
Cabinet Minister Manish Tewari called the killings a "very, very heinous assault" and said Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was sending 1 million rupees ($18,300) to the girls' family.
The case has horrified Indians two months after they were outraged by the gang rape and killing of a young woman on a moving New Delhi bus.
The gang rape sparked nationwide protests about India's treatment of women and spurred the government to hurry through a new package of laws to protect them.
The gang rape victim and her male friend, who also was badly beaten up in the attack, were dumped naked on the roadside, and the woman died from her injuries two weeks later in a Singapore hospital. Five men are being tried on rape and murder charges in that case, while a sixth, who is underage, is in juvenile court.
A new law enacted by the government has increased the prison sentences for rape from the existing seven to 10 years to a maximum of 20 years. It also provides for the death penalty in extreme cases of rape that result in death or leave the victim in a coma.

I think it is time for the United States to let the A** Holes over know that if they do not enact laws that protect woman from these types of barbaric acts and enforce them that the US will enact economic sanctions against them.
Better yet, as consumers we do not need the government. STOP BUYING THEIR SH*T.
HURTING LITTLE CHILDREN, SEND THEM TO ME I GOT SOMETHING FOR THEM!!!!!!!
Won't work. The laws are there, it's the enforcement that is lacking.
Yea --
like there is no crime in the good 'ole USA--
sarcasm
wiseone, santions never work for it does not hurt the government, only the poor. There are over 400 million living in extreme poverty in india and would condem them to death.
When you have a government, a society, and even a faith that literally looks down on women these kinds of incidents are not surprising. Sad abd disturbing yes, but not shocking.
I am not surprised by the rape and murder of 3 young girls since our media and our society have hardened me against such brutal atrocities but the callous, indifferent way the police treated their disappearance and the crime brought big tears rolling down my face. Their children for God sakes, innocent children! How can people be so sick and cruel? I applaud the people for standing up with such protest in hopes of justice. Now though, any scapegoat will be presented just to pacify the people. How sad and how heartbreaking.
Living in India must be a living hell for women. Those poor babies, I pray for them.
Truly horrifying. The "role" system is heavily in place in India. Women are supposed to be subservient and keep their mouths closed. Unfortunately it will take cases like this for them to learn that being "proper" will only continue the view that they are "lesser". I mean seriously in one of the prior gang rape cases they shrouded the men's identities after they had been arrested but did not conceal the identity of the victim (WTF!!) The women of India need to learn to break out and speak up, if nothing else for the sake of their daughters!!
The victims were not women, they were children. May the perps get what they deserve.
123WILL Excellent thought. As a father I would wonder the same thing. Where are the fathers and or men in these families. Clearly they are not men. Any man worth his salt would have taken action against these animals. One way or the other!
Clearly this p***es me off.
Just another example of the "creatures" that live in 3rd world countries. Also another example of how Muslims treat thier women. And you want them to migrate to this country???????
Whats the problem? Women's bodies have a way of shutting that whole thing down.
btw , the saying from people after visiting india:
I'll
Never
Do
It
Again
I have cancelled my vacation plans to visit India in the wake of what is happening. The last thing I want is for anything to happen to my wife or daughters. I HIGHLY suggest anyone who thinks of vacationing here give it some serious thought. Who wants to visit a place where the police and government have such little respect for women and if something would happen the police sit and do nothing? This will be one country I can guarantee I will not ever put on my vacation schedule.
Since this is India, land of Tigers, feed these coward murdering rapists to the Tigers.
It will not bring back the innocent, but imagine the terrified look on these coward murdering rapists as they "try" to run for their lives!
Like many of the countries in that area they see women as mear objects not real people. Until these heathens recognize women as real people this will continue. Even if they catch these thugs they will most likely get off with a very light sentence, maybe spend sometime in jail but eventually walk away with no remorse or guilt and be welcomed back into their family/brotherhood.
India. . . land of the scum and former American jobs.
Remember One Billion Rising. It's time for women everywhere to unite in protesting this accepted violence. V day is February 14th.
India, the land where women and livestock live in fear....
That's some *ucking sick *hit, in one sense it's good to know that all the sick monsters in the world DON'T live in the US.
I hope they find whoever did this and stone him to death after flogging his genitals off.
What the hell is wrong with the men in India?? Have they ever heard of the word "castration?"
They aren't men they are poor excuse for a human being, raping a woman is horrible and to do that to 7, 9, 11 year old child is pure evil. Cut their member off should be their first punishment. Woman are not trash and they are not a piece of meat to be abused by so called men.
This is terrible, but put your phony indignation away. The rape/murder a few months ago 'stirred' outrage then and India did not/will not change. This wont make a dent either. This is India...do you think this society fundamentally wants to change its culture...not me...
Does India want to change? Yet India; and now, South Africa have become the only countries in history to have public demonstrations against sex crimes.
Two months ago a woman was gang raped on a bus [she died] he companion was beaten both bodies thrown naked from the moving bus. To get a feel for the mental state of the majority of men in India, I give your three quotes: "Guilt is not one-sided," Indian spiritual leader Asaram Bapu, told followers earlier in the week, adding that if the woman had pleaded with her six attackers in God's name, and told them she was of the "weaker sex," they would have relented, Reuters reported. Quote 2: Mohan Bhagwat, a conservative pro-Hindu politician, weighed in with his view that rape occurs only in Indian cities, because women there adopt western lifestyles, but not in rural India. [these girls were from rural India] Quote 3: "Until today I have not seen a single incident or example of rape with a respected lady," Manohar Lal Sharma said, according to the Bloomberg report. "Even an underworld don would not like to touch a girl with respect." This is the slime lawyer defending three of the rapists, that's it blame the victim.
Interesting. In this country, no one differentiates between city and country wisdom. The stupid anecdote is only 'she should not have been dressed that way, that is why the rape happened'. But in India the women and girls dress covered from shoulders to toes, western dress is seldom used. ?
women in india are treated worse than cattle, it's not uncommon for parents to murder their baby if it is born female, this pactice has been prevalent for years,we find it hard to comprehend these brutal attacks, in india it's considered the norm, a little like british cabinet ministers and small children, or dare i say it catholic priests, we live in an entitled cruel world.
The police (men) didn't do anything,
till the villagers (women) mounted a pretty seriously size protest.
What's the point of raising the jail time for rape if men are in charge, men don't care and cases only
get investigated if a sizeable amount of press and protest is mounted, enough to embarras officials?
Are there any decent men in India? The Mid-east? Where are they? They are either mute or very few because they dont seem to be doing crap but looking the other way unless forced not too.
I'd like to see women take over the whole region, politically, judicially, religiously. The men belong in cages.
Do what I would do as a father, catch em and cut their b----s off! ...and that's just for starters. F'ing animals!
Wow, almost an entire country that holds cows sacred and yet pedophiles are ok? And how many of these "people" are in the U.S. now? Time for a new export.
Note:
Indian law is based on English law. There is no difference.
The criminals, after they get a fair trial, will probably get death by hanging.
Women all over this Earth need to start taking matters into their own hands. Not until men start being killed with anything happen. Men are the casue of much of the brutality in this world. Killing them will be the only way to end it.
Accidental? The cop said the death and rape of three little girls was accidental? Fire him and then charge him with idiocy. The mentality of these men is beyond comprehension.
