North Korea warns US commander of 'miserable destruction' over military drills

North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un (second right) waves to a crowd of military officials in this undated photo released by North Korea's official Korean Central News Agency Saturday.

PYONGYANG, North Korea -- North Korea warned the top American commander in South Korea on Saturday of "miserable destruction" if the U.S. military presses ahead with routine joint drills with South Korea set to begin next month.

Pak Rim Su, chief of North Korea's military delegation to the truce village of Panmunjom inside the Demilitarized Zone, sent the warning Saturday morning to Gen. James Thurman, Pyongyang's official Korean Central News Agency said, in a rare direct message to the U.S. commander.

South Korea and the U.S. regularly conduct joint drills such as the Key Resolve and Foal Eagle exercises slated to take place next month.

North Korea calls the drills proof of U.S. hostility, and accuses Washington of practicing for an invasion.

North Korea releases a new propaganda video calling the U.S. hostile and showing images of President Obama superimposed with flames. Meanwhile, residents line the streets of Pyongyang celebrating the country's recent nuclear test. NBCNews.com's Dara Brown reports.

"You had better bear in mind that those igniting a war are destined to meet a miserable destruction," KCNA quoted Pak as saying in his message to Thurman. He called the drills "reckless."

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, meanwhile, has been making a round of visits to military units guiding troops in drills and exercises since the nuclear test, KCNA said.

The threat comes as the U.S. and other nations discuss how to punish North Korea for conducting an underground nuclear test on Feb. 12 in defiance of U.N. Security Council resolutions banning Pyongyang from nuclear and missile activity.

North Korea has characterized the nuclear test, its third since 2006, as a defensive act against U.S. aggression.

Pyongyang accuses Washington of "hostility" for leading the charge to punish North Korea for a December rocket launch that the U.S. considers a covert missile test.

The U.S. and North Korea fought on opposite sides of the three-year Korean War, which ended in a truce in 1953, not a peace treaty, and left the Korean Peninsula divided by a heavily fortified border monitored by the U.S.-led U.N. Command.

Washington also stations 28,500 American troops in South Korea to protect its ally against North Korean aggression.

The dear leader is one ugly fat dude. He stuffs his fat face with the best food there is while his people starve and have to rely on the compassion of western countries.

I side with the Conservatives on this. Technically, a state of war still exists on that peninsula. The arrogant North Koreans armed with nukes is a nightmare scenario, which only gets worse if Iran gets them. We can't afford another Pearl Harbor but this time with nukes.

People...Keep in mind this liberal, corporate/government controlled media outlet telling us this story today. Talk about propaganda. We need to remain focused on issues right HERE. Let's get back to the stories of our gov't. buying up billions of rounds of ammunition since Sandy Hook and the liberal cries for WE THE PEOPLE'S GUNS!!

Keep focused is all I'm saying. Don't be letting this story be so important and worrysome as to be distracting while the chess pieces continue to move right here in our front yard.

Don't forget about Benghazi! Unless that's a bunch of right wing propaganda trying to distract us from the real issues.

Why haven't we just taken N. Korea out yet?? Between the military threats and humans rights issues prevalent in this ridiculous excuse for a country...why are we tip-toeing around? Are we a force to be reckoned with or not? How much longer will we play the cat and mouse game with N. Korea? Enough already...

North Korea needs to put-up or shut-up. If North Korea does attack I hope the US will fight back and not call for more sanctions while one of our cities being nuke. I worry are leaders will not have enough guts to nuke North Korea or fight back and allow millions of Americans to die at the hands of North Korea. The US has not done anything except ask for more sanctions and does not know how to fight an all out war.

So, North Korea's tests of rockets that could be used as ICBMs and of nuclear weapons that could be fitted to those ICBMs is fine. But non-nuclear exercises in the region are not?

Those N Koreans look like the midgets their brains are. Notice how big their hats are too? Small brains under the big hat. Are we to run and hide over what some N Korean general whose army has not fought a war in 50+ yrs has said as a warning? We hold these drills every yr so no reason to stop esp after an uncalled for threat. If we back down and not do the drills we play into the N Korean propaganda and appear to be afraid. We cant do that at all with N Korea continuing its threats. Of course we need be ready should N K actually try to call our bluff. If they play it wrong then the North better be ready to re-name its capital and figure out where they are going to build it since Pyongyang will be only a large smoking hole in the ground.

Why is North Korea constantly in America's headline news? Is America itching for a confrontation with a small third world nation, North Korea?

It is doubtful that North Korea is an economic or military threat to USA by any known metric. It is obvious there's more at stake behind the surficial exchange of bellicose words between the two nations. Since the American people are not the direct beneficiary of these verbal confrontations that may lead to military confrontation, the natural question is who is the beneficiary behind these war of words?

well the photo their admired leader (applause please) indicates that he is not missing any meals. unfortunately, the rest of the country is not wearing about forty pounds of an obese midriff. they, the ones without power are starving, but Kim like his father has penchant for the good life and imports his brandy, caviar, USDA choice beef, and SF Sourdough bread.

I also love the many campaign medals of their officers. problem is, where and what campaigns did they participate? hmmm, medals but no campaigns. loooks old chiang kai shek of taiwan just before he took that island that wonderful population prisoner.

all slimeball dictators are alike - money, military, money, military and nothing more. scumbags of the earth prevail while their wonderful citizens suffer. it will be good when that little fat boy just bursts from eating to much kimchee.

i've read this entire thread. i can't believe how many want to "nuke 'em" over some words. do any of you, who want to "nuke 'em" have any concept what that means ? not to mention the thoughtless concept that russia and china would ignore nukes going off in their back yard, regardless of the reason.

that said, during the exercises the US needs to be cautious of a provoked trap. the last thing needed is some F/A-18s to fly in range of some russian sa-17s or chinese hq-16s (same basic thing). many will come down the hard way.

the leaders must know that know that they could not sustain a war with the south and the western world. they couldn't last time china got involved and bailed them out. This is a gamble i think little kim is hoping would happen if the U.S gets involved again....i don't think China wants this nor do they want a War in there front yard. Most the crap you hear comming from the north is propaganda that is ment for home not us. Most of the average person in the west has a better education than most of there leaders. so hearing that kim senior got a hole in one on ever shot he made is not believable. Nor can you have a holy war when your country out laws most reliegon other than you worship your leader.
