Subscribe to RSSTRIPOLI, Libya -- Fifty-one people have died since Saturday after drinking homemade alcohol, most of them in the Libyan capital, Tripoli, and more than 300 others were suffering from alcohol poisoning, the health ministry said on Monday.
The consumption and sale of alcohol is banned in the North African country, even though it is available on the black market.
In a statement on its website, the ministry said 38 people had died in Tripoli and another 13 had died while on their way to Tunisia for treatment.
"There have been 378 cases of alcohol poisoning so far," the ministry said, adding the illegal concoction was believed to have contained methanol. The deaths were among that figure.
It gave no further details about the alcohol or its source.
With its long, porous borders, Libya has seen a significant increase in drug and alcohol trafficking since the 2011 war that ousted dictator Moammar Gadhafi.

51 People? Sounds about right. I think that many die at University of Idaho every year from alcohol.
Maybe the Libyans ought to go with a homemade wine recipe instead. Much safer and easy to do.

Oh I think they would be treated just like any other 'outsiders' especially revenuers. It's not nice to mess with Southern folk when they wanna be left alone and they don't bother yelling out a warning. ;-)

People will always do stupid things to get high(er). Years ago a guy told me you could make your pot better by spraying it with Raid. Yeah, the insect killer! :-(
Most folks who make the wicked brew do it to make money. They sometimes add wood alcohol (methanol) to make their moonshine stronger, or use old car radiators in their stills which contaminates moonshine with toxic metals like lead, copper, and tin, as well as antifreeze (glycols).
True. A few years ago I read an article about some Malaysians sniffing fresh, hot cow poop to get high from the gases that are emitted. Seriously. And I'll say it so the next poster doesn't have to: "Dude, you gotta try this. It's some really good shlt."
Probably their own clerics selling it to punish the guilty drinkers the same thing happened in a Muslim section in India, Muslims are like Mormons if you take two with you on a fishing trip they give you a evil eye every time you drink a beer, if you take one he will drink all your beer, so I guess its best not to go fishing with them.

During Prohibition, the government added a toxic element to certain readily available sources of alcohol with the idea it would scare people off from trying to drink it. Of course, they didn't tell anybody, and thousands died. Maybe the same tack is being followed in Libya, to punish the sinful. To death. Horrible.
I doubt anyone is "fortifying" their hooch with methanol. It's already in there, and the still is supposed to remove it. If you don't distill it carefully (correct temperatures, etc) - then you end up concentrating it instead of removing it.
Of course - anything's possible. I've heard of people drinking photocopier fluid and sniffing propane to get high... (then lighting up a smoke - whoops!)
This -- in a Muslim country where drinking alcohol is completely banned -- shows the world exactly what hypocrites Muslims really are. It's OK for them to kill foreigners for drinking alcohol, but they will sneak illegal booze for themselves because it's OK for them to cheat on their own 'religious beliefs' as long as the 'infidels' don't know. Maybe the US should get out of Afghanistan and just start sending them rot-gut whiskey instead of shooting them.

They can't drink it if someone is watching! only if they are alone, it is also important to not get caught the punishment could be deadly. they also can not have consentual sex instead they rape, that way only the woman gets punished.
Legalize booze & pot. Look at the Alaska villages that people spend $400 on a bottle of booze or make some homemade rotten booze. Plus look at the cost of cops chasing them around day & night.

Do you mean the people of India--or are you referring to the native people of what we now call North and South America, who were erroneously identified as "Indians" by a lost and clueless failure of an explorer who had miscalculated the size of the Earth to be 1/6th of its actual size (in spite of the fact that the Earth's size was already known to 97% accuracy) and for whom (the explorer) we now have a purposeless Federal holiday, yet there is no holiday honoring the people indigenous who were nearly wiped out by the consequences of our exploration?
And yes, they drink it like water. That is the problem. They are genetically at a very high risk for alcoholism and addictive disease.

I hear it every day, its a lefty thing. if one person of a Hispanic background does harm to one with say a Black background for example then it is the white persons fault. that'sjust the way it is you simply add liberal reasoning and it works out that way 90% of the time. it works with all races, its always the white race that is to blame, want proof read MSNBC its all over in their stories. all races are considered white if they commit a crime, unless its Gang related then its a toss up. but its the white race that makes the other races behave inappropriately at times, just think how far personalities like Opera, Cosby, Obama, Danny Glover and hundreds of others, and thousands of successful ethnic people would have gone if the white person wasn't holding them back think how great they would have been if they were never drug to this country, the potential in their ancestral countries would be staggering the white race ruined it for all of them. even the Native Americans they were perfectly happy hunting and raiding the others villages.

Thousands of years of human history and governments still think that banning drugs and alcohol will matter? As long as it is an individual choice to consume those substances just let it go. So much wasted effort.

I understand that a Muslim can drink wine in Heaven. There the wine is supposed to be "better" than wine on earth so it is OK to drink it there. Stupid! Better drink wine in moderation here on earth as dead Muslims don't drink anything that I know of.

Inexperienced or greedy distillers may keep the process going too long and end up with an unsafe product. After the ethanol comes off, the temperature goes up and various other alcohols (fusel oils) come off. The old moonshiners used to know when to stop, based on a pause in what was coming out of the still, and probably changes in smell (and maybe taste), as well.
I just watched a documentary on VICE's YouTube channel about this. They brew the stuff right in front of their houses using discarded tubs and tubing. The final product goes into a gasoline jug. I'm not surprised it's poisoning people.
Gasoline jug....I remember I think in South Africa somebody stored it in old containers that were used to store insecticide. Lotta sick and worse.

Centuries behind the US. Prohibition been there done that. didn't work. The US figured out it didn't work over 10 to 15 years. I believe the reason there prohibition lasts so long is that corruption and religion go hand in hand.

Hey, Iraq had a state-owned distillery prior to US intervention. It made Saddam Whiskey (had a picture of him on the label made up like a Kentucky gentleman), which, according to some friends who visited that lovely nation on their "senior trip" courtesy of Dubyah, was pure rot-gut hooch. Sucked for the people though, they couldn't even escape the gaze of that sonofabitch when they were getting drunk :(

They still make good shine in Kentucky, Carolina and Tennessee, use copper stills and fresh corn and water.
