Subscribe to RSSRIYADH, Saudi Arabia — Seven Saudi men convicted of theft, looting and armed robbery were executed on Wednesday, according to the country's official news agency, more than a week after their families and a rights group appealed to the king for clemency.
The executions took place in Abha, a city in the southern region of Asir, the Saudi Press Agency said. A resident who witnessed the execution said the seven were shot dead by a firing squad, a first in the kingdom, which traditionally has beheaded convicts sentenced to death.
The witness spoke on condition of anonymity because he feared retribution.
Amnesty International called the executions an "act of sheer brutality."
"We are outraged by the execution of seven men in Saudi Arabia this morning. We oppose the death penalty in all circumstances, but this case has been particularly shocking," said Philip Luther, Amnesty's Middle East and North Africa director.
"It is a bloody day when a government executes seven people on the grounds of 'confessions' obtained under torture, submitted at a trial where they had no legal representation or recourse to appeal," Luther said.
The south has been marginalized and suffered discrimination by the powerful central region where the capital, Riyadh, and the holy shrines of Mecca and Medina are located.
The seven were arrested in 2006 and received death sentences in 2009, a Saudi newspaper reported at the time. The case was back in focus after Human Rights Watch earlier this month called for the sentences to be canceled because the men were juveniles at the time of their arrest.
Torture claims
One of the men told The Associated Press in early March that he was only 15 when he was arrested as part of a ring that stole jewelry in 2004 and 2005. Nasser al-Qahtani said he was tortured to confess and had no access to lawyers.
Al-Qahtani said that during the years-long trial, he only faced the judge three times and when the men tried to complain to the judge about the torture or show torture marks on their bodies, they were ignored. He also said the judge never assigned him a lawyer.
The original sentences called for death by firing squad and crucifixion.
The oil-rich kingdom follows a strict implementation of Islamic law, or Shariah, under which people convicted of murder, rape or armed robbery can be executed, usually by sword.
On Sunday, a Saudi paper reported that the government is looking into formally dropping public beheadings as a method of execution and instead considering death by a firing squad as an alternative. There have also been calls in the kingdom to replace public beheadings with lethal injections carried out in prisons.
Local observers said there are fewer people willing to carry out beheadings.
Saudi Arabia has executed 23 people so far this year, including the seven men on Wednesday. Last year it executed 76 people and in 2011, 79.
'Strong evidence' that trial was not fair
Also, several people were reported crucified in Saudi Arabia last year. Human rights groups have condemned crucifixions, including cases in which people were beheaded and then crucified. In 2009, Amnesty International condemned such executions as "the ultimate form of cruel, inhuman and degrading punishment."
On March 4, Human Rights Watch appealed to King Abdullah not to execute the seven men and said there was "strong evidence" that they did not get a fair trial.
"It is high time for the Saudis to stop executing child offenders and start observing their obligations under international human rights law," said Eric Goldstein, deputy Middle East director at HRW.
The following day, the king ordered a one-week suspension until the case was reviewed.
The Washington-based Institute of Gulf Affairs, which campaigned for the suspension of the executions of the seven men, recently said in a note to the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights that one of the reasons the seven were sentenced to death was that "they hail from the south, a region that is heavily marginalized by the Saudi monarchy, which views them as lower class citizens."

Dear ExYahooUser. Don't bother with facts. U.S. oil production has gone up more under Obama than any other recent president. If you want to make a point, at least use facts instead of the usual hateful biased that has become so common in this country. By the way, Obama has also been the strictest enforcer of illegal immigration in our history. More illegals were deported during the first three years of Obama's term than were in the eight years under George Bush. I doubt, however, you care about reality.

How many steps away from this are we with our own death penalty? What exactly is the bar that must be crossed for the State to gain the right to take a life? Certainly this goes well beyond what one would ever see in the US, but perhaps it gives one pause.

In a time when we believe we are supposedly the most civilized nation on earth, our streets are becoming less and less civilized due to trash. Perhaps the Saudi's are on to something. Interesting that Amnesty International is so hot on these convictions. They have been silent in so many other parts of the world where the acts of sentencing are far more brutal for far less a crime. Amnesty is beginning to choose its headlines and becoming more and more of a selective voice. Of course those on the post who are such strong supporters of this group probably have no idea what amnesty has turned their back and deaf ear on. This is the way the Saudis have carried out sentencing for centuries. When you get caught stealing, they cut the hand off that you eat with. Of course many of the dumsh!ts on this post have no idea that many of the people over there use the other hand to wipe their ass. No many of the poor do not have toilets. They crap out in the gutters that line the streets. Amnesty is turning into a joke.

Get with the plan Stan. Legislation passed by Congress in 2006 or so outlawed foreign aid to the Saudis. The Bush Administration found ways around that prohibition and continued to sell military equipment to them.

Well, if we want to express our opinion to them I suppose that's fine, but then we'd better to be willing to expect their opinions about what we do in return. If we want to play a sanctions game, we probably lose that one.
Although the complaint was that they were tortured and didn't get a fair trial, I don't hear them saying these guys were innocent either. Saudi Arabia chooses to be pretty strict when it comes to punishing crime. These guys may have been low class and suffered more severe treatment than their elite would, but we'd be hard pressed to deny that there isn't similar inequity of treatment here either. Not a lot of wealthy people in prison and that isn't because they are more law abiding. Is cleaning out your bank account because of unfair practices any worse that stealing jewelry? Depends how you look at it I guess. If you are powerful enough to create "legal theft", I guess you're not going to trial.
There is plenty in our history, both past and present, to criticize. I suppose we have grown past genocide and slavery, but we did it in the past. We do some other things today too that can be called into question, so I'm not so sure we really have a lot of room to talk.
On a positive note, we should consider that maybe they are making progress in moving from beheadings and crucifixions to a firing squad, which by the way is still an "acceptable" alternate form of execution here today in two states. In fact hanging is still an acceptable alternate method in two states. So maybe they are becoming more "civilized".
We can debate some things that are considered crime in Saudi Arabia, but for traditional crimes like theft and murder, their official numbers look quite good. I'm not justifying their methods of dealing with crime, but at least on the surface, it seems effective.
If we start refusing to deal with everybody that doesn't follow our rules, we won't be dealing with anybody. We can try to exert some influence, but if there's a significant amount of money involved, we usually remain relatively quiet. Do we have double standards in some cases? Youbetcha!
We can pray that someone nukes Mecca and Medina, for a kinder and gentler world. That BS country has got to be stopped. it is the epicenter of most of our social problems, internationally speaking: terrorism.
There are better ways to seek justice and the truth in a more accurate and more humane fashion, if they are willing to question their own rigid cultural traditions. Educational opportunities given to their citizens about the world outside their own, gives them the keys of enlightenment to reducing the continuation of such backwards and brutal medieval practices in their part, and in any other part of the world. (These opportunities of cross-cultural learning and improvement also applies to us in the New World, as well).
They are only two steps from the stone age over there and far from civilized. It's unbelievable. Executions of kids that stole some jewelery? What the hell? On the positive side, they ALL hate us here in the US and certainly are not going to listen to us. So that's just seven less of them to worry about becoming terrorists someday. We need to all push our Congress and our very incompetent president to make a plan to become energy independent ASAP. Within five years would be nice. If we switched our cars, trucks and locomotives over to burn natural gas instead of gasoline, that would be a great start. For me, the next car I get is going to get at least double the gas mileage that my current one gets. I am considering that Ford C-Max or another hybrid. Hell, I might even get an electric lawn mower.

I hate to say this, but it appears that the Saudis are real a$$h0les. Maybe not all, but there must be a lot of them, as there doesn't seem to be much protest to this kind of sh** treatment. Teenagers can be jerks, but can straighten themselves and become productive adults. They're still young; they can still become good people, even after mistakes.
