Swiss tourist gang-raped in central India

AP

A Swiss woman, center, who, according to police, was gang-raped by a group of eight men while touring by bicycle with her husband, is escorted by policewomen for a medical examination at a hospital in Gwalior, in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, Saturday, March 16, 2013.

A Swiss woman who was on a cycling trip in central India with her husband has been gang-raped by eight men, police said Saturday. The attack comes three months after the fatal gang-rape of a woman aboard a New Delhi bus outraged Indians.

Authorities detained and questioned 13 men in connection with the latest attack, which occurred Friday night as the couple camped out in a forest in Madhya Pradesh state after bicycling from the temple town of Orchha, local police officer R.K. Gurjar said.

The men beat the couple and gang-raped the woman, he said. They also stole the couple's mobile phone, a laptop computer and 10,000 rupees ($185).

The woman, 39, was treated at a hospital in the nearby city of Gwalior, Gurjar said.

A photo showed the woman walking while being escorted by police to the hospital. Her face was concealed with a hood, a common practice in India, where law does not allow rape victims to be identified publicly to protect them from the stigma attached to rape in the conservative country.

Police detained 13 men and questioned them, Gurjar said. Six of the men were released after questioning. No other details were immediately available.

Indian television stations showed scores of police searching the forest where the attack occurred.

Swiss Foreign Ministry spokesman Tilman Renz described the case as "deeply disturbing" and said Swiss diplomats were assisting the couple.

The diplomats called on Indian authorities "to do everything to quickly find the perpetrators so that they can be held accountable," Renz said in a statement.

Last month, the Swiss government issued a travel notice for India that included a warning about "increasing numbers of rapes and other sexual offenses" in the South Asian nation.

India has seen outrage and widespread protests against attacks on women since December's fatal gang-rape of a young woman on a moving bus in New Delhi, the capital. The crime horrified Indians and set off nationwide protests about India's treatment of women and spurred the government to hurry through a new package of laws to protect them.

One of six suspects in the December attack was found dead in a New Delhi jail this past week. Authorities said he hanged himself, but his family and lawyer insisted foul play was involved. A magistrate is investigating. Four other men and a juvenile remain on trial for the attack.

And yet, in the name of "free trade," we allow American corporations, businesses and even government agencies to outsource jobs to this backwards, filthy nation.

I've got a friend who's Indian and left that awful place, emigrating to America because he said he couldn't stand living there and is now proud to be American. He wants nothing to do with his "heritage" and is more American in his culture than most American. His parents are now in the process of emigrating. They can't stand it there either. They want to be Americans.

Has anyone commenting here ever actually been to India?

Americans look incredibly zenophobic when they make comments like this. One in three American women are raped or sexually assaulted during their lifetime. You seem to think these things don't happen here. I assure you they do.

Remember Steubenville just 9 months ago, when men carried a drunken, incapacitated 16-year-old girl from party to party where two high school football players (Trent Mays and Ma'lik Richmond) repeatedly raping her?

Or October 2009, outside a school dance in Richmond, Calif., when a 15-year-old was gang-raped over several hours as others watched?

How about two years, when teens in Dunbar Village, Fla., were convicted of a brutal gang rape, torture, and forced incest of a woman and her 12-year-old son?

I could go on for days.

India may be poor, but crime is far less frequent in that country than it is in any major U.S. city. What is it about people on these comment threads who make such uninformed statements about things they have no knowledge of? Is this some sort of insecurity, masked by an effort to feel superior?

Grow up.

I don't have to go to India to know that women are NOT supported or protected under the laws there!! No one is disputing that women aren't raped in the United States . . . We do have laws to prosecute these sick people!!! We do not have to hide our face becasue of the negative stigma that's associated with the act . . . rape is not the fault of the victim and the victim should not have to be shamed or hide!! Actually, Melana, I'm exactly spot on. I've spent a great deal of time in India - alone and with female family members. Can you say the same?

India has laws to prosecute rapists - and after the gang rape last year, the entire country rose up in protest. We couldn't get even a small response when 12 people were killed (and 58 were wounded) in a movie theater in Aurora last year.

Can you see the difference? I certainly can.

BTW, the identity of rape victims in this country is also protected.

You go anyway and sure enough, you are raped and robbed. Does that make you exceedingly arrogant or exceedingly stupid? Let's say yo go to Mexico where you know there are bloody drug wars going on that have spread throughout the entire country with daily murderss and kidnappings in the streets. Your country has a travel advisory out. You go anyway. You get caught in a crossfire between drug dealers and cops. You are killed. Whose fault was that? Lesson: There is somtimes a price to be paid for being stupid.

Why do people like you feel that it's okay to excuse atrocities in other countries by pointing out crimes that occur in America?

Allow me to point out that yes, the government there hurriedly passed laws to protect the women of India against rape... LAST YEAR... AFTER THE BRUTAL RAPE AND DEATH OF A YOUNG WOMAN AND THE OUTCRY OF THE REST OF THE CIVILIZED WORLD...

Perhaps the callous disregard of the value of a woman's life and dignity would not be such a fragile thing today if the Indian government had hauled its archaic misogynistic views to the burn pit earlier and the rapists had been taught a more elevated view of the female.

It is what it is... a country moving forward, but not yet ready for the free and easy life style of Western tourists, and dangerous for its own female citizens, with or without male escorts. And it's cheap and an "apples and oranges" scenario to compare it with America.

I'm sorry for what happened to the woman and her husband. Travel tip: visit no country that will not issue a firearm permit for personal protection while you are there.

Physicist we understand what your saying. Nice pictures. You have to remember that not everyone who visits or travels to another country is going to be open or understanding to the cultural differences. This is a primary factor in how well you are received. So your experiance is not going to be the same as 'the one who knows' who might have had prejudice towards the people and thus was received poorly. Another example, let's say you were from another country and came to the US and went out to shoot a few games of pool, unknowingly, you visited a pool hall in 'the hood'.

Maybe if they'd stop patting the men on the head for jobs well done when the media isn't focused on them, that would help curb the gang rape bit. It'd help if they also would actually do something about it instead of constantly claiming there's nothing they can do or they're investigating.

For those of you arguing, here is the difference.

Yes, rape occurs in developed countries (EU, US, Australia, etc). Typically 80%+ of rapists are known to the victim, i.e. boyfriend, ex, etc. In places like India, Middle East, Africa (anywhere a woman has no value) a husband raping a wife would be seen as absurd and these are not counted as rapes, while they are counted in places like the US.

In places like India, Pakistan, Middle East, rape is seen as a way of controlling, subjugating women, sort of like raping cattle or sheep. You do it because you can. The majority of rapes in these countries, in fact all of them, are by strangers, typically groups of men. Why groups, because they can easily overcome a women and her husband/boyfriend. I have had several people from these countries tell me the stories of how guys go out looking to have a fun time and find a woman to rape in a gang, sort of a right of passage. Again, no stigma on the men, they are showing that they are men. The stigma is on the woman and the shame it brings to their family. Why very little prosecution, because it is the woman who was shamed, it is her family that has to deal with it. And if the issue is brought up publicly, then the woman who was raped is the adulterer, she is the one who had sex outside of marriage, which is why statistics are so hard to find and why this crime is rarely reported. I would not be surprised if 100 more women were raped while the Swiss lady was raped, but you will never hear about the other 100, again because women have no value.

It is not uncommon to for women to have to pay a dowry in places like India and many other countries. You want a website link, take a look, there are many others.

And it is not uncommon in these countries for women to then be abused, burnt, raped, etc., if the dowry paid was not sufficient. Ergo why few families want female babies, and why female babies are regularly aborted. Want another website, ok, here it is,

Yes, there is a similar concept in the west, i.e. the woman's parents tend to pay for the wedding. But whether the wedding is cheap or expensive, this is not an excuse for the husband to then beat, burn, rape (gang) or kill the wife.

She is welcome to move here, to America. Where our government would force her to have that baby under penalty of law if those on the Right have their way in political office. This is not a contested statement, this is something they admit openly.

If that woman just happened to find a way into our country illegally, and would have no choice but to have the baby, that baby would then be an American-born citizen, entitled to be loved and cared for as one of us, an American citizen, by the most loving, caring, inviting and embracing members of the human race: The members at the CPAC convention. Who would openly welcome an Indian-Swedish rape child as one of us reg-lar-'mericuns. That kid would get the best kind of care under conservative leadership, I'm sure. Unless they could find a way of keeping him out of our country in the first place, that is.

I know a very attractive woman from India. She is 42 and she moved here 21 years ago. She says that she led a very sheltered and protected life ruled over by her father. She always resented not having very much in the way of freedom, and whenever she challenged her father about it she was over ruled without explanation.

She had no idea about the sub-culture that exists in India. When all of these things started to make the news she asked her Father about it, and if that was the reason why she was not allowed any freedom.

His answer was "Yes".

I have been to India. I was in Bangalore, India a few years ago. I remember it well since I was hospitalized with food poisoning as soon as I got off the plane back home. The place was FILTHY! And I could not believe how they walked around barefoot in all that filth. Garbage was piled at the streets presumably for pick-up but it didn't look like anybody was picking up anything. The garbage was piled high and looked like it had been there a long time. There had to be rodents everywhere with all that garbage.

I often wondered if I had forgotten to put my clothes on when I was walking around given the rude stares I was getting from the men there! There were drainage ditches that were so nasty, they were completely black and had bubbly stuff in them. I thought surely if one of those guys threw out a cigarette in those ditches, they would explode!

My husband and I did get out and about in the tuk-tuks one day and realized it was hazardous to our health to be in a vehicle there!!! Thank God it was a short stay!

In Singapore, there is a large area of Singapore called "Little India." It is almost as dirty as Bangalore!! And there too, the Indian men were not hesitant to undress you with their eyes. They make a woman feel VERY uncomfortable!!! And it is amazing how many times they have to "rub" against you when they pass you on the sidewalks and in the stores.

My heart goes out to this Swiss woman and her husband. And my heart goes out to all of the women living in that God-forsaken country called India where men treat women like garbage!!!

Maybe all tourists should go there and put all their cows on a bbq and eat them.

If a country is so silly to worship cows and starve its population, it's no religion, it's population control.

I don't see people agitated over India's religion.

But it's ok, I just can't stand seeing pictures of poor starving children in India.

The idiosyncrasy is that the few people I have met from that country were very smart, but they had all left the country instead of using their brains to stay and work on improving it.

Here's another one -

Sikar gang rape victim's health improves
(The Times of India)

Mar 17, 2013, 01.09AM

JAIPUR: The 11-year-old Sikar gangrape victim's health has improved and she has started walking with the help of others. She was shifted to All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) from JK Lon hospital, Jaipur on February 8. The victim's sister Seema (name changed) said, "My sister has started walking. Her health has improved a lot after coming to Delhi."

In August last year, the 11-year-old girl was abducted and gangraped in Sikar. She had suffered serious injuries and was brought to the JK Lon hospital in Jaipur, where she underwent 14 minor and major surgeries. But, as the family demanded, they were shifted to AIIMS by the state government. When she was admitted to the JK Lon hospital, she was 'critical' as she suffered complete perineal tear.

Politicians of the ruling Nehru/Gandhi dynasty are some of the most corrupt with no morals.

An uneducated Italian waitress married one of the monkeys/donkeys of Gandhi dynasty and she has been ruling India for the past ten years.

Gandhi cap wearing barbarians have ensured that police, courts and media are totally corrupt.

Of course, people are also responsible.

Many don't have much education, but high egos and poor morals.

Muslims also form around 14 percent of India's population.

Like other places, they contribute to the mess.

With less then five percent, just examine the mess Muslims are inventing in the US!

Rape occurs in the US too. 89,000 are reported each year, and it is estimated that over 60% of rapes are not reported. 16% of women say they have been raped or been the victim of an attempted rape.

The US ranks #6 of all countries in rape at 28.6 per 100,000. THe US beat Zimbabwe which ranked #8. The rate in the US is SEVEN times that of India.

Canada has a rate of 1.5 per 100,000

So before you call India a ***^hole, perhaps we should fix our own problems. India is a very poor country, what is our excuse?

Been to India. Spent four months there. Doesn't make me an expert, but I can say I loved and hated many aspects of the country.

But its a patriarchal, family/shame driven country full of all kinds of machismo identity issues. Men there from my observation follow patterns found in a myriad of cultures - our own included - when it comes to ideals of masculinity, sexual repression and all the other -isms.

Bottom line, some of you knee-jerk self-righteous kill-them-all neanderthals need to get off your soap boxes. Abhorrent behavior isn't unique to emerging countries like India, whether culturally sanctioned/tolerated or not.

You could change India for the US, Mexico, Brazil, an endless list of nations where this gang-rape thing is getting more and more (deserved) coverage.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say its a deeper global problem. Some "men" - and I use the term loosely - I feel are simply collectively feeling threatened by the emergence of women as equals in terms of capabilities to succeed and flourish outside traditional roles. My feeling, wholly unsubstantiated by anything other that observance of trends, is that a broad spectrum of weak men across cultures and borders, simply can't get it up in the face of real women so revert to this savage, pack-minded behavior.

Put simply, a lot of male seem to be afraid of women and their responses range from gang-rape to the burkha.

Anyway, just some thoughts. No need for the xenophobes, trolls and self righteous to get their panties all twisted up.

It's also good to see some more thoughtful comments on this thread since I left it yesterday. The world isn't a black-and-white place - anywhere.

One final thought: some people write about the open sewers, trash, etc., as if they're unique to India. They aren't. Until just a few hundred years ago, every major city in the world looked like Bangalore. Sewers were ditches along the side of the road. Municipal trash collection didn't exist. And if you happened to be walking down the street when someone was emptying their chamber pot from a second-story window - well, you get the point.

A trip to India is a bit like a trip back through time. Your own ancestors lived like that (if they were city dwellers). Which makes it all the more fascinating - at least to me.

Thank you, Physicist-retired, for your comments! You are ONLY 100% correct! You obviously have an education and are able to apply logic and common sense!

Frankly True, thank you for your statistics. We needed those in this blog. Most of the top 10 rapist nations are in Africa. I believe South Africa may be number one or close to it.

India has much to see and do for the serious tourist. There are antiquities galore, national parks with all kinds of animals, friendly people, and some of the best luxury train tours on earth. You can adjust to the food if you are open-minded. Most everyone gets "Delhi Belly" at least one time, and after that you are immunized! I learned to like the food, and several dishes are favorites. Buffets in big-name hotels are some of the best in the world. Big beautiful shopping centers, all opened within the past five years, offer virtually anything you can find in the USA, Europe or Asia, including many Western restaurant chains, and usually much cheaper.

It is a dangerous thing for two people to camp alone in a forest most any place on earth. This type of activity may sound romantic, but it is foolish and fraught with danger. Even in Yellowstone the wolves and bears will eat you. If you use common sense in India and do your sightseeing in the day, staying in secure hotels at night, there should be no problem with safety. Where can you find more than a dozen white tigers except in the Kolkata zoo? Where can you find the world's largest banyan tree, covering about a square kilometer, except south of Kolkata on readily available reasonably-priced tours? Where can you find a fully-operational 1920s-style city-wide tram system, except in Kolkata? Where can you find the world's largest railway station, a distance of one mile from one side to the other, except the Howrah station in Kolkata? Where can you find one of the world's best buffets, three times daily, except at the Hyatt Regency in the Salt Lake City area of Kolkata? We could give high points of the other major cities of India as well. If you expect everyone to be wearing a suit and tie, and driving a Mercedes, then don't go! If you expect sights and experiences unparalleled around the world, then go, and go quickly, as it is slowly getting more expensive! India is LIFE! Go and experience it!

There are 1.3 Billion people in India.

With a population that large, you can not expect that there would be no criminals at all.

There is crime in every nation on Earth.

There is rape in every nation on Earth.

99% of Indians are decent, law-abiding, hard-working people.

Even if you add up all the criminals, it would be a tiny, tiny, fraction of the total population.

It is unfortunate that people want to stereotype an entire nation, based upon the actions of a few.

When every single person in the United States is following every single Biblical teaching, then you can

point to others.

I blame the country.. It is a pathetic @!$%# hole.. BECAUSE they don't have laws in place to protect women from rapes.. Why do you think they are protesting, oh that's right geniuses because they want better laws..

Too many damn corporation here in America support these rapists and scammers because they do ship jobs over there.. I know an India Indian that gets paid 1500 rupies a month from AT&T that equates to 20usd per month from the company.. So next time your at&t phone rings just think that is one more rapists that country supports without stricter laws protecting it's women and you are encouraging by dealing with these companies.

When I call a company that has outsourced it's jobs to another country and I get the non-english fools on the phone I always ask to be transferred to the states to speak to someone that speaks English - it costs the company for me to speak to someone within the US.. Steinfelds which is now bay valley food has outsourced all their warehouse jobs to India. My uncle use to work for them and he would say that most the shipments from India did not meet our federal food standards because the levels of some of the crap in the brine was at toxic levels for human consumption..

Be my guest to eat these foreigners foods because the US companies feel they can slip one by the FDA, you can enjoy eating toxins and supporting lax gang rape laws.. Maybe one day you can only wish for someone to have compassion on your own daughters, mothers, wives if ever faced with laxed laws on something that violates them.. Or most of the crap on here will just think women are property..

I can't stop laughing about these statements you made. Saying that what's going on in Bangalore is not unique and then comparing it to what was going on in major cities "a few hundred years ago" to prove your point is absolutely hilarious. The truth is that we are now living "a few hundred years" later and the technology to not have open sewers and filth as part of our daily lives has been around for a long time. You are indeed somewhat "unique" as a society if that's how you live today. Even the most impoverished region of nearly "every major city in the world" has trash collection and human waste control systems of some sort today.

India managed to figure out how to spin centrifuges 40 years ago and get themselves nuclear weapons yet they can't implement sanitary living conditions for scores of their own citizens? Creating sanitary living conditions is not akin to splitting the atom in complexity. They've managed to construct entire cities to develop software and field support calls for American companies yet getting a turd underground or trash out of town is a mystery.

Oh how I long to go back in time to live like my ancestors did. If only I could experience bloodletting, rampant disease, influenza that killed millions, amputations without anesthesia, raw sewage flowing in the streets, casting out of demons, drowning of witches. Fascinating indeed. I shall travel to India to experience some of these things that my ancestors did. Thank you to Bangalore as they have maintained an environment for the world to visit and "step back in time". Perhaps they should put a fence around the place, put in some turnstiles and market it as a theme park.

Oh boy.......I'm still laughing. Thanks for entertaining me this wonderful St. Paddys morning.

    Sincerely,

    Shake-Boy

Yes rape stigma is a conservative value - even in this country where there is an underlying belief by some that women lie about being raped ("illegitimate rape") and that any pregnancy resulting from rape is a "gift." The most conservative cultures blame women when they are raped, even punishing them with imprisonment or execution for being victims of rape. That is because the most conservative cultures are male dominated and the men can't begin to think they are responsible for anything like this - the woman must have done something to provoke it. I still have to laugh at men who think they are in charge of everything except their own penis.

      Anita;

But female teacher are free to molest boys and having their babies, is that it? Whining about being "in love" with a 13, 14,15 year old Child, PUH-LEEEZE! Double standard much? I guess child molestation is a liberal value, then? To this conservative mind, child molesters, rapists and serial killers should get a swift execution. With DNA excluding all other possibilities beyond the entire population of the planet, there should Not be endless appeals, stays and revolving door prisons brought to you by the liberal "their just misunderstood and had a deprived childhood", idiot brigade. Even so, a crummy childhood beats no childhood at all because you were killed before having a chance. Lots of people had a crummy childhood and grew up to be productive, law abiding citizens. With all those seeking to adopt and the myriad contraceptives readily and freely available, abortion should be rare. But hey, I guess the liberal can't be expected to take responsibility for their own actions.

China, as leftist a regime as is possible, mandates terminating all pregnancies not approved by the state, the leaving of female babies on hill sides to die as a means of population control, and imprisons couple and single women for becoming pregnant without state approval. Children born without state approval are denied all services as non citizens. No job, no health care, no housing. So yeah, kinda the pot calling the kettle black. North Korea is about the same using the Chinese social model.

See little miss, "I'm so superior" feminazi hack, those broad brushes you like painting others with really suck when it is you being painted with them, huh?

Right, Left, Liberal, Conservative, just words. Politicians have only two things in common, 1) If they're mouth is moving, they ARE lying to you and 2) All they care about is money and power and holding on to it. There are as many billionaires on the left side of the aisle as the right. Toss aside your partisan party indoctrination and check the facts. Of die in ignorance, I will waste no more time with you.

For the record, female teachers who have sex with their students are sexual predators who should be prosecuted, but until female teachers entice their students at the rate of 89,000/year--which is the rate for reported rape in the U.S. (60% of rapes go unreported), then you are comparing apples to oranges.

If you are poor argument, you are basically saying then that liberals are ok with killing the innocent but want to protect murderers rapists and pedophiles. I laugh everytime someone like Bill Maher brings upo that argument, conservatives are against abortion but want the death penalty, yes we do!!!! Criminals have broken the law and made their own choice, babies have not. So obviously liberals are the death merchants here.

Are you not aware that the Nation itself worship penis and has temples from Kashmir to Kanyakumari worshiping "shivling'.Was Sati brought to India from Italy, was Devdasi's imported from west, has female feticides come from Italy. The very comment that you put in English is not because your family is from England, but Nehru had a role in enhancing education. IIT's originated with his vision. Some sacrificing Europeans also invested time & money in schools, hospitals and charity. Definitely the corrupt looted too, it happens today as well with those in power. Your anger against the lady reveals your true (un)Indian image which is VHP/Bajrang dal thinking which cannot accept women in leadership. Grow up

Why do people think conservatives are against women when libs have been for lighter sentences for rapists. In Cali, Jerry Brown is letting them out early because he'd rather fund our light rail than prisons to house sex offenders. Also, Colorado statesmen (and women) all with a D in front, have said women shouldnt be allowed to carry guns to defend themselves, because they would just panic and start shooting innocent people, and rapists would be able to take the gun anyway. Can libs stop their war on women already?

Why do the US and European Governments support the Indian government. This country is a failed experiment in international relations. When a young lady in India was recently beaten and savagely raped in the most disgusting way. (this wasnt simply involving the use of what this scum pass for a penis) several people in the ruling party defended the rapists and condemned the woman who sadly then passed away from her injuries. The UK alone gives this country 2 BN a year in economic aid alone. This is a country where many of the average people actually despise outsiders and are happy to abuse any woman let alone a foreigner. Today we hear reported the brutal gang rape of a swiss woman shortly the pathetic wishy washy response of the absolutely laughable response of the Swiss embassy which was incredibly weak to the point one wonders why bother to have an Embassy at all. My sympathies are with all of these women. Personally I have no sympathy and no mercy for the subhumans that behave as these people have in perpetrating these acts. Death is justified and the mercy of a sensible society would be to make that happen as soon as possible where these low life are concerned. Unfortunately, in India, civilization seems to be massively lagging behind in proportion to the massive corruption and manifest issues with wealth distribution. This is a country so corrupt where the majority views are a complete anathema to most people in western Europe, so much so we simply dont understand that these event are commonplace and largely ignored because it is seen as acceptable within a medieval caste based system.

Hired Ranger, you were spot on when you mentioned caste system. It is most likely the only reason that the majority of Indians would never realize any semblance of "middle class" status. In many parts of India, if you were born a rat catcher, you and you children will always be rat catchers. If you were born into a family which buried bodies, you and your children will always bury bodies. Businesses who have outsourced, because of the caste system, in most places can employ only those whose parents were born into a certain caste. You will not find a rat catcher being trained to operate a computer or transcribe medical data for American patients. It is a cultural travesty to imprison people at a level from which they cannot emerge, but they accept that lot in life.

In a perfect world we could eliminate the scum who thinks it is okay to attack, and act out their sexual carnage on innocent people. I would honestly love nothing more to hear of people rising up and over power the police there to get hold of the rapist and remove their spank sticks. Just a good cleave should do the trick..

You say it like it would be a bad thing? The only problem with shooting people crossing

is if we have to bury them and I'm all for letting the vultures feast. As far as India?

Nuke strike! We have old ones that we are disarming and this would be cheaper

India, being a "conservative" nation, is filled with poor children, elderly and innocent who obviously believe that a rape victim is some sort of wh*re. Either the poor children, elderly and innocent in that rancid nation with its inferior culture changes, or else we'll get rid of the ones who allow it to continue. Anyone who won't step out of their cultural inferiority gets what they deserve - they're not "innocent."

Now jamie advocates killing American citizens to accomplish the government's goals. That's an interesting comment from someone so paranoid of the government he/she is afraid to come out from under the bed.

That's real patriotism isn't it, jamie? Do you ever think about the comments you make here or do you just throw crap out of your cage and hope it lands on one of your keepers?

"Kill em' all and let God sort em' out"! .....To bad we can't implement this strategy every once in a while........(and while we are at it, I can think of a few places in the U.S to add the list.

That's from one of our 'christian libertarians' who believe only they are allowed to make the laws and determine right from wrong. Great example you're setting for the nation there, jamie. At the same time you say you're against sharia law (even though you don't what it means) you advocate killing citizens who might disagree with your peculiar line of thought.

Your homework assignment tonight, jamie, is to read Leviticus (it's in the Old Testament where you get the idea it's not proper to be gay and such) and tell us how it is different from sharia law.

What could be more conservative than "Kill them all and let God sort them out?" It is a saying that I learned in the military a long time ago before Eric Holder became U S Attorney General and before President Obama became President, but it still seems to be valid U S policy, to this present day, as embodied in U S drone strike philosophy as espoused with similar views by U S Attorney General Eric Holder and President Obama despite conservative/libertarian opposition brought out recently by U S Senator Rand Paul. "Kill them all and let God sort them out" also seems to be the philosophy of "mankind" throughout history. Killing is excused due to flip-flops; here today, gone tomarrow...Morals just blowing in the wind--like some Indian Hare Krishna view of war.

When it comes to a rapist, there's really only one appendage that needs to be cut off, well maybe two and then if violence against women or anyone continues once the equipment is gone, then more permanent measures should be taken.

The locals have it just as bad. I had to travel there for work and I just hated it. THe conditions is China were just as bad, but I knew I wouldn't be jumpedwhile I was there. My good friend also died from an intestinal parasite and Rich was careful what he ate and drank. My friend Bob was born there and has only returned once, for his mother's funeral. I graduated with his wife from HS. She travels regularly, but the family has money and she goes no where without two armed guards. She says, if she didn't have security, she would not return. There are places equally as bad in the US, but we all know where they are, who you would be dealing with and you know what you can and can't do.

Every day we also hear of a citizen ending the miserable life of a criminal. All citizens should be armed and know how to use a weapon. Then the low lifes with illegal guns will think twice before attacking a woman.

                    Tourists are safe in India.

This is a unique, bizarre incident.

Tourists have to worry more when they visit the US.

Just recently, there was a tourist from Europe who was pulled into an alley in New York City.

A large number of Indians are coming to the US, pedophiles, rapists, and idiots from India are coming into the US. In the meantime dont travel to India they are animals, pigs, and illiterate ignorants who act innocent but will steal you blind.

I did business with Indian people in the US, if they didnt pay their bills they were lying their butt off and trying to deceive you all of the time.

Mike--False accusation based upon your bigotry. Do you have one shred of evidence that the rapes in India are being done by Muslims? No, you just wanted to vomit your poisonous venom all over everyone else. Why should the "so called press" tell you what you obviously already know? I can respect someone who disagrees with me but I detest a fool who has no idea what he is talking about.

No matter the religion, women in India are treated as dirt. Even the beloved Mother Teresa treated those women as lowly slaves to their husbands, to bend at their every whim, and to bear children, no matter what, even if the next pregnancy lead to death.

Mike, 82% of India's population is Hindu, 12% is Muslim with the remaining 6% comprised of various other religious beliefs. I hardly think that 12% of a country as densely populated as India would be considered a "large" number-"large" compared to what? To the number of Christians or Jews in India? If that is the basis if your comparison, then you would be correct, but to conclude that these rapes are committed by Muslims because you think that there are large numbers of Muslims in India? Get a life!!! We are talking about INDIA, NOT Pakistan!!!!! Pakistan is the country that is predominately Muslim-get your facts straight.

Just one of the many effects of religion ruining society. So many of the world's religions have a huge element of misogyny as part of their core "values," causing men to consider woman as property and not human beings, so therefore it's perfectly O.K. to rape or murder them. Absolutely disgusting. But it will continue in this same fashion until such ignorant views are wiped out by the spread of science and education.

It is like sophisticated and slick Bible thumper people using the Bible to prove anything they want. Sophisticated times means that manipulated science and education can be and is being used to spread ignorance. How can anyone believe or trust anything or anyone that is sophisticated nowadays?

India has been a high tourist destination for decades, and boasts not only absolutely beautiful beaches, sunsets and natural terrain, but a wealth of historical significant locations as well. It is not and really has never been an overly affluent country but neither has the Caribbean, Mexico, Jamaica or many other places that people frequent for vacations. That being said, it is clearly becoming an unsafe venue for travel, but that is a relatively new situation.

I'd bet good money it was muslims, this along with the previous gang rape was probably done by groups of muslims. They're the ones that primarily commit this behavior because they view infidels as subhumans. Look at how they treat their own women, you can only imagine what they do to non-muslim women. A lot of people forget that India has, if I remember correctly, the second highest population of muslims in the world.

Gee dev, where did you learn that gem of wisdom, your local synagogue or Fox News? If you think these guys raped the woman in the name of religion or because of their religion, you must be a moron.

What is going on in India to account for the growth in gang rapes? In a few cases, the woman was with a male companion. These seem to be particularly violent.

I haven't read of such a rising number of gang rapes in any other country, although America has always had it's own fair share. There is a trial in Pennsylvania right now, with some football players, who allegedly raped a 16 year old.

My sympathies to this woman; certainly she never dreamed something like this would happen while travelling with her husband. Personally, I have no desire to go to a place like that, and the only way I would even remotely consider the option would be if I were in a group and we were all highly trained in martial arts and carrying a slew of weaponry that we were also expert in. In that instance it would almost be worth the trip, but in reality, this is not a place I would consider as a viable travel option.

I doubt if those 8 would every try that again, if they survived their wounds.
